Also impacted were two Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Buildings – Lee’s Summit North High School and Sunset Valley Elementary School. Both of the school structures sustained minor exterior damage to the roof/fascia/HVAC screening areas. Specific damage to residential structures and trees are not included in this information as the assessment has not yet been finalized. A category F-5 tornado touched down 4.2 miles from Lee's Summit in 1957 that killed 44 and injured 207. In 1977 an F-4 tornado occurred approximately 21 miles away. In 2011 a deadly EF-5 tornado devastated the City of Joplin, MO resulting in 116 fatalities and destroying much of the community. Joplin, MO is approximately 142 miles South of Lee’s Summit. In 1996, the department responded to a microburst located in the Raintree Lake subdivision in the southern portion of the city limits. This weather incident severely damaged several homes. This incident lasted several days and utilized most of the department’s resources.
