to the well being and growth of this town. I would like to thank all of those

Chancellor, Briant, Cates, Crowley, and that this list will grow in the next 150 years and we thank all these families for all their contributions.

As the Mayor of Lawson, I am proud to call this town home and be a part

of a community that believes in family values, faith, and friendship. I want to

personally thank all of you in Lawson that have helped to make our town what

it is today and will continue to evolve for many years to come, “a safe, family

friendly community who cares for one another”.

community. Naturally, towns like Lawson do not see sustainable growth over a span of 150 years without household

names that make up our town. These are names that are multi-generational and have provided backbone for Lawson

A Look Back THE HISTORY OF LAWSON

Citizens started to push for incorporation early on with a desire for official

authority to enforce law and order within the town limits, as well as the desire

to organize a school within Lawson. The town was officially incorporated on November 7, 1871.

Some of the early businesses that came to Lawson in 1871 included bootmakers, a general store, a furniture store, a drugstore and a blacksmith shop. In 1874, Joseph and Henrietta Raum built the first hotel at the corner of Pennsylvania and Second Street.

The Roney House was built in 1884 at 503 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and still stands today. Shown top left in its original state with ornate gingerbread features, top right after the porches were rebuilt in 1905, and again after an addition in 1955.

AN ANNUAL TRADITION SINCE 1902 That 1902 event was such a success that the lodge decided to hold one again in 1903. From then on, the Lawson Picnic became an annual tradition. Each year the attendance grew with both railroads helping out by putting on extra cars to accommodate the crowds that came from all around to visit with friends, make new ones, to share enormous basket lunches, and to cheer whatever highlight events were offered each time.

The 1922 Picnic was reported as being a One of the earliest picnics held in Lawson was that of 1874 when Alexander Doniphan delivered his last public address for the benefit of the Democratic party. That gathering in the town’s public square took place 22 years before Lawson’s I.O.O.F. lodge

Prior to 1902, the Lawson lodge had gone to the regional annual gathering in whatever town the district decided to hold it in. In 1902, the district officers chose Lawson because of its two railroads making it possible for many more to attend.

The Lawson lodge extended an invitation to the lodge home south of Liberty (now Belvoir Winery) to attend, bringing along every orphan in their care.

The crowd was estimated to be about 5,000. Two thousand cars were counted by those in charge of parking spaces, which shows a significant change from the early days of guests arriving via rail.

Over the years, the Picnic took on a carnival atmosphere and the date varied to accommodate whatever entertainment company was scheduled that year.

The family lunch basket disappeared, replaced by those serving hamburgers, hot dogs, pie and the like.

Today, the tradition continues with the carnival, craft and food vendors, live entertainment, contests and other family fun making the Lawson Picnic one of the longest running events in our region.

The carnival is one of the most popular attractions at the Lawson Picnic with rides for all ages.

Some family names are synonymous with Lawson history. Just open up the pages of the Lawson Centennial Book from 1971, and you’ll

immediately recognize names of our founding fathers that are still prominent in Lawson today.

Morrow is a name that goes back to 1888 when

J.M. Morrow first opened Morrow Lumber Yard, which continues to operate today by siblings Bill and Marcia who are the 4th generation. Bill’s son

James M. Morrow and wife Rose Warren Morrow Established Morrow Lumber Yard in 1888

Mitch will continue the legacy.

From the family farm to the Lawson Bank, the Nolker family has been involved in Lawson coming and goings for over 100 years. Heavily involved in Lawson and Ray County politics,

today Matt Nolker acts as City Administator for Lawson, helping to move the town forward.

The McQuerrey family can trace its Lawson roots back to 1870. They have long been involved in the Lawson

School District. W.D. McQuerrey served on the School Board and helped with the building of Southwest

Elementary. After returning home from Vietnam, David McQuerrey worked for the School District for 25 years.

Today, his daughter Megan (McQuerrey) Owens serves as the Principal at Southwest Elementary.

A Look Ahead WHAT’S NEXT FOR LAWSON? Lawson has seen a boom of developments in recent years that is attracting new families to the community, as well as new businesses.

The Lawson City Lake Complex has become one of the premier destinations for Lawson residents and visitors alike. The Lakeview Campground and RV Park opened in 2020 and was quickly one of the most popular getaways for people seeking socially distant vacation options. The Lakeview Event Center also opened in 2020 and has hosted numerous events such as banquets, graduation parties, weddings and more. The 18-hole championship disc golf course is attracting enthusiasts from around the region.

Improvements to the Lake trail continue each year with the hope that it will be fully paved in the near future.

Thanks to a generous grant from Missouri American Water Charitable Foundation and the National Recreation and Parks Association, our Lawson Splash Pad just opened in May 2021 to the delight of residents of all ages and abilities. Plans are underway for additional park upgrades and improvements.

The Lawson School District continues to provide our students with a quality education in an ever-changing environment. They have made many improvements to their facilities including the new Barker Center, which also serves as a storm shelter, with another multipurpose gym and shelter being added to the Southwest Elementary campus in the next year.

The real estate market in Lawson has been booming in recent years, with homes often selling in a matter of days. New houses continue to be built around town as more and more families choose Lawson as their home.

One of the biggest initiatives of the Lawson 150 celebration is encouraging 150 community service projects to take place around Lawson in 2021. Projects can be small or big. They can be completed by individuals, families, churches, organizations or businesses.

Please be respectful of home owners and do not block any driveways or park in anyone’s yard without their consent.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY• 5PM-10:20PM Parking shuttles will run approximately every 20 minutes from Southwest Elementary to Downtown Lawson with a dropoff location at Lawson City Hall

SUNDAY • NOON-4:30PM

Parking shuttles will run approximately every 10-15 minutes from Lawson High School and Southwest Elementary to Lawson City Lake

SUNDAY • NOON-4:30PM

Parking shuttles will run approximately every 20 minutes from Lawson Assembly of God Church* to Lawson City Lake *PLEASE DO NOT PARK AT THE CHURCH UNTIL AFTER 12PM
