MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR The City of Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department is excited to participate in a statewide campaign to educate our community on the value of local parks and recreation programs.

An extensive research study asked California citizens and public officials “Why are parks important to you?”

Overwhelmingly, survey respondents value parks and recreation as an essential community service. Virtually every California household (98%) reported visiting a park during the past year. Forty-two percent visited a park at least several days a week; 26% visited at least once a week, and 68%

visited at least monthly. Of these, 55% go with spouse or partner, 53% with kids, 48% with family, 46% with a friend. Only 5% of the users indicated they go alone. In short, parks and recreation services make Californians’ lives better. So how do parks and recreation make your life better?

PLAY For us, the biggest benefit is a safe, outdoor play space for our kids today...and as they grow.

NATURE Being in nature makes one feel alive. Parks provide beautiful spaces close to home.

EXERCISE Parks are made for moving at your own pace. Local parks make it easy to stay healthy.

MEET THE STAFF Michael Ramirez: Michael Ramirez started working for the City of Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department in June 2015 as our Recreation Coordinator. In accepting his position with the City of Lathrop, Michael moved to California from Minnesota. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Prior to coming to California, Michael was the Sports Coordinator for the City of Bloomington, MN Parks and Recreation Department. Newly engaged, Michael spends his free time wedding planning with his fiancé Courtney. Michael’s positon with the Parks and Recreation Department will assist with the oversight and implementation of our Sports and Leisure programs, as well as the day to day operations at the Community Center. Michael is very energetic and passionate about providing great recreational opportunities to the community. We are very excited to have him on our team and look forward to his assistance in expanding our programs here in Lathrop.

Monica Armstrong: Monica Armstrong started working for the City of Lathrop as a part-time Recreation Leader working in the office in at the Lathrop Generations Center in April 2015. She was hired into a full time position with the Parks and Recreation Department as the Administrative Assistant I in July 2015. Monica assists with the day to day operations at the Community Center. Her experience in the private sector have provided her with the background and skills needed to provide administrative support with the day to day operations at the Community Center. She is a welcome addition to our Parks and Recreation team.

REFUND POLICY • Please make your selections carefully.

• No refunds or transfers will be given on or after the first class. Any refund or transfer must be requested at least one working day prior to the first day of class.

• All refunds will be made payable by check to the primary account contact and will be mailed to the address on file. We do not add the credit to credit cards.

• Refunds will take approximately six weeks to process.

• No refunds (whole or partial) can be given for classed missed by the student.

FACILITY RESERVATION INFORMATION Certain City of Lathrop park shelters may be reserved for picnics, parties, etc. Reservations should be made a minimum of 30 days in advance as shelters are limited. Reservation fees vary depending upon the size capacity of the picnic shelter and/or open space.

Payment in full is due on the day the reservation is made. Inflatable bounce houses are only allowed in

7. Please enroll only in classes appropriate for your child’s age. Exceptions based on skill level must be preapproved by the instructor and the City of Lathrop Parks & Recreation Department.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION Free Snack Program Lathrop Community Center A free snack program is offered at the Lathrop Community Center each weekday throughout the school year. Any child under the age of 18 may eat free at this state funded snack program. Snack is served from 3:15 pm until 3:45 pm. You do not have to be part of any Lathrop Parks & Recreation Program to participate in this program. It is open to the whole community. Snacks are not served on weekends or holidays.

KID CLUB INFORMATION Before School Program Lathrop Community Center, Joseph Widmer School and Mossdale Elementary School 7:00 am to 9:00 am These successful before school programs serve all three of the elementary schools located in Lathrop which is part of Manteca Unified School District.

This program will serve a healthy snack; help your child prepare for their day and present interesting and creative activities. Kid Club Programs are open Monday through Friday except certain holidays.

Come Join “Chip” (Children Helping in Program)

Kid Club presents a unique program for children in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. This program is designed for the participant to work with staff and learn the job duties related to Kid Club. The objective of this program is to offer children job skills that will last throughout their lives. This program is offered at all three sites.

Fees: $2.50 per hour

Youth Scholarship Program

Afterschool Program Lathrop Community Center, Joseph Widmer School and Mossdale Elementary School 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm The Kid Club afterschool program consists of arts and crafts, games, sports, cooking, science and homework time. The program will focus on giving children an opportunity to use their creativity, as they embark on each new and enriching project. The City staff will create a safe and encouraging environment for each participant. The program will serve a healthy snack.

Fees: $20 per week

Kindercamp Program Joseph Widmer School and Mossdale Elementary School Due to a change in the Kindergarten program being offered at Lathrop Elementary School, this program is no longer being offered at the Lathrop Community Center.

The program may be offered at Mossdale and Joseph Widmer Elementary School. The program will have a story time, arts and craft project, activities and other fun play opportunities. Please contact the Kid Club for more information and details at (209) 941-7375.

Fees: $25 per week

Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be a Lathrop resident. Families receiving a Public Assistance Grant (ADFC or General Assistance) will automatically qualify for financial assistance. Current income verification from your case worker must accompany the application. Families not receiving public assistance must show proof that the family income is at or below the current HUD guidelines. Proof of yearly income can be verified in one or a combination of the following methods: 3 current paycheck stubs, 3 unemployment check stubs, workers compensation payment verification, social security income verification, last year’s Form 1040 tax return, or state disability verification.

4. Awards will be issued on a first come, first serve basis as long as funds are available.

TEEN CENTER INFORMATION The Teen Center is a safe environment for teens currently enrolled in the 7th-12th (or ages 12-18) grades to gather and socialize with friends after school, participate in structured activities, work on homework, play video games, grab a snack, SAT reviews, and be mentored by City of Lathrop Teen Center Staff. The Center will host PS4 tournaments, WII U tournaments, Pool Tournaments, Ping Pong Tournaments, Movie in the Park, and much more!

We will be hosting Guitars not Guns Music program, Art Clubs, Sister2Sister, Intermural Sports, Graphic Design, Photo Clubs and more for our Teen Center Members. Teen Center Membership will be $48 starting August 1, 2015 – July 30, 2016. The Teen Center is open Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Guitars Not Guns: This beginning guitar program will instill a love and appreciation for music that participants will carry with them for the rest of their lives. This 8 week Program will be available to the first 10 teens to sign up. The program teaches guitar and offers the opportunity to master changing from one chord to another, teaches perseverance and discipline and builds self-esteem. Free to members.

Sister2Sister: Radio Personality Amanda King will host the Sister2Sister program designed to empower and encourage young ladies. The program offers mentorship and community services opportunities as well as including curriculum that revolves around different themes and talking points each week. Art Club: Are you the next Rembrandt or Picasso or Stan Lee? If you have a passion for art or just want to try your hand at it stop by and join our Art Club.

Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 6:30 pm Scott Brooks Gymnasium at the Lathrop Community Center Share in the holiday spirit with our annual Tree lighting Ceremony. We will sing holiday songs.

Refreshments will be served and Santa will be visiting with the Children.

SEPTEMBER 5K Levee Run Saturday, September 19, 2015 Mossdale Landing Community Park The 5K Levee Race Fun Run/Walk race day registration packet pick up begins at 6:30 am at Mossdale Landing Community Park, (700 Towne Centre Drive). The race will be followed by an Awards Ceremony. Each participant will receive a commemorative t-shirt and the top three finishers in each category will receive a medal. Additional, the top three male and female finishers in their category will receive a medal.

Celebrate Lathrop

Lathrop Celebration of Lights Help us celebrate the season and enter the Lathrop Celebration of Lights! The event will celebrate and acknowledge the skill and holiday spirit of our community by judging the outdoor holiday light displays during the Christmas Season. Annual Breakfast with Santa

Saturday, September 19, 2015 Lathrop Generations Center The Lathrop Celebration Festival which takes place at the Lathrop Generations Center will commence at 11:00 am and will conclude at 6:00 pm. This year we will feature Karate demonstrations, Karaoke contest and entertainment all day into the evening. Food and retail vendors will also be featured at the event. Come and join us for a wonderful day full of events, fun and family time!!

Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 8:00 am Lathrop Community Center Celebrate the Christmas Holiday Season with Santa and his Elves!! Come out and enjoy a hot breakfast. This delicious breakfast will also include a picture of Santa with your children and Santa’s Elves will be handing out special treats to the children. Children ages 3-12 are $4.00 and all others over the age of 13 are $6.00. Tickets will go on sale November 16th. Ticket quantities are limited.

Lathrop Tennis Program with Future Stars 2000’s Our tennis program is managed by Lance Turner and Future Stars 2000’s. Future Stars 2000’s began as a small tennis program founded by Lance Turner in just three cities: Stockton, Lodi, and Manteca. In 1995, Future Stars incorporated as a non-profit publicservice 501c3 organization. The mission of Futures Stars 2000’s is to promote and grow the game of tennis in Northern California. The City of Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department is looking for people interested in teaching classes and miniclasses to youth, teens and adults.

Creative people willing to share their hobbies, interests, skills and talents are encouraged to design either short workshops or 4 - 8 week programs of recreational and educational interest. A class description and outline should be submitted, along with a City volunteer application, to the City of Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department at 15557 Fifth Street, Lathrop, CA 95330. Class instructors are paid on a contract basis.

We have staff assistance available to help you design a class outline, set prices, and market your class. For more information call (209) 941-7370.

Senior “Shred It” Day Are you being buried in a pile of old papers? You are not alone in the fight! Come to the senior center for our “Shred It” Day! We have a top of the live shredder available for use and we will have refreshments, music, and fun for everyone. You can bring no more than one paper bag full of paperwork at a time.

Trips & Tours Apple Hill Trip October 22, 2015 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Come join us for a fun filled trip to Apple Hill at the High Hill Ranch in Placerville on October 22nd.

Upon arrival guests will receive an Apple Fritter with coffee or hot tea. After snack, guests will be free to explore the High Hill Ranch. The bus will leave the Senior Center at 8 am and return to the center approximately 5:00 pm. Must be 50+ to attend. For more information please contact the Lathrop Senior Center at (209) 941-7380.

THANK YOU SCOTT BROOKS!!

Scott Brooks grew up playing basketball at the Lathrop Community Center. It was here in Lathrop that he began to realize his dream of playing in the NBA. A dream that lead to more than 10 years as a player in the NBA, including being a member of the 1994 Houston Rockets Championship team. His career as a player in the NBA ultimately lead to countless other opportunities and achievements including becoming an NBA Assistant Coach, NBA Head Coach, NBA Coach of the Year and a 2x NBA All Star Game Head Coach.

In 2010 the City of Lathrop recognized Scott Brooks by naming the gymnasium at the Lathrop Community Center after him.

In June 2011 a ceremony which Scott attended was held to unveil the plaque for the facility which now bears his name, the Scott Brooks Gymnasium. In 2014 he donated a digital marquee sign to the City to be placed outside the gymnasium and the installation of this sign was recently completed. The digital marquee will allow the City to promote events that will be hosted by the City.

The City is grateful for Scott’s consideration and generous donation that will benefit to the Lathrop Community for years to come!
