EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS

DINERS, DAYTRIPS & DEMONSTRATIONS

Looking for ways to engage, entertain, and teach the children in your life? Did you know that Heritage Lakewood provides fun, stimulating field trips and in-school outreach options for students of all grade levels? Our curriculum focuses on content from the 20th century and aligns with school standards. Field trips can be adapted to accommodate a variety of groups including Scouts, homeschool classes, and senior trips.

Field trip themes such as Agriculture, Community Culture in the Home, Commercial Growth, and Local History are explored through our historic structures in small group rotations. Discover the lessons of a 1920s schoolhouse or investigate the rooms of farmhouses from the 1920s and 1930s. Be sure to practice your best “diner slang” at a 1940s diner and learn the important role of a WWII era victory garden. Students will meander through a variety store and beauty salon from the midcentury, relive the golden age of the “road trip” through a 1950s motel, and so much more!

Spread the word to your child or grandchild’s teacher that Heritage Lakewood would be a great destination for a day of learning away from the classroom, then join the fun — field trips need chaperones!

Trip costs start at $5 per student for a 75 to 90-minute timeframe. Teachers, support staff, and chaperones are free. The Collaborative, an organization associated with the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, provides limited additional funding for school and nonprofit groups in the seven-county Denver metro area. Please make requests at the time of the reservation. Heritage Lakewood is an ADA accessible site, and we welcome all visitors! Please let us know if you are interested in any accommodation or adaptive services or equipment when booking.

Are you a family group or a smaller organization?

Book a 60-minute walking tour through Heritage Lakewood’s historic buildings: $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for youth. We also host free on-site events, such as Lakewood Lights.

Interested?

Want to extend the day?

Additional activities can be added to your field trip such as a blacksmith demonstration or a hayride! Ask about the free museum galleries, scavenger hunts, and Kountze Lake bird walks for more low-cost options.

FIRING UP THE FUTURE

We are thrilled to announce to our community that Washington Heights Arts Center (WHAC) will complete a project dedicated to revitalizing our beloved Kiln Yard this fall . This initiative goes beyond simple repairs; it's about safeguarding a unique community treasure and enriching the lives of thousands of creative individuals, who transform raw earth into beautiful works of art through the firing process .

The Kiln Yard, a regional draw for ceramics artists, supports five distinct firing techniques, making it a cornerstone of WHAC's exceptional pottery program. By updating safety measures like adding water lines, a new fence for improved aesthetics and wind screening, and fire safe storage systems, WHAC is ensuring this vital resource remains sustainable and

inspiring for years to come. These improvements will create a more accessible and aesthetically pleasing space for outdoor classes, beyond the kiln operations, and serve to reduce fire risks and foster positive neighborhood relationships. Looking ahead to the spring of 2026, we will plan to landscape the greenspace in front of the yard, along First Avenue, with a beautiful and functional garden that will host plants for natural fiber dying.

With a goal to host outdoor firings by early 2026, the project will expand programmatic excellence and promote sustainability, all while upholding WHAC's mission to engage all people in the arts. This project is an investment in the future of our vibrant arts community, solidifying the Kiln Yard's role as a hallmark of creativity and community connection.

Join us; let’s FIRE IT UP!!

PUMPKIN CHALLENGE

Calling all creative families!

Celebrate the season with our Book Character/ Halloween Pumpkin Challenge.

Design a pumpkin inspired by your favorite book character or classic Halloween figure. Perfect for kids and grown-ups alike!

Join the rumpus and sign up for our hands-on Pumpkin Challenge Workshop on October 11, 9–10:30 a.m. Choose a character, bring your imagination, and we’ll supply the rest: foam pumpkins, paint, props, and crafty magic. Costumes encouraged!

Let the Wild Rumpus Start!

Inspired by "Where the Wild Things Are," here’s how to turn your pumpkin into the lovable Wild Thing, Carol:

1. Paint the pumpkin with a base coat of light tan or pale yellow paint and let it dry

2. Add vertical, lightly brushed brown strokes around the pumpkin using a paintbrush for that Wild Thing look .

3. Glue on fuzzy brown hair made from yarn across the top, sides, back, and bottom

4. Create big round eyes from white and yellow felt, and a triangle nose from pink felt

5. For the mouth, cut a long, thin strip of black felt and glue it to make a smile on the lower half of the pumpkin .

6. Make a row of teeth from white felt and glue them along the smile of the pumpkin’s “face ”

7. Shape curved horns from white felt, stuff lightly if desired, and glue to the top of the head

T his not-so-scary monster is all about big imagination and wild fun!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Inspiring Every Step: The Volunteers Behind the Heritage, Culture & the Arts Division

If you’ve ever been warmly welcomed at a performance, greeted with a smile at a community event, or guided through one of our historic structures, chances are that friendly face belonged to a volunteer.

In 2024, our dedicated Heritage, Culture & the Arts volunteers donated an incredible 15,580 hours of their time. But our program is about more than numbers — it’s about people. It’s about the sense of community we build together, the lifelong learning we foster, and the opportunity to give back while sharing individual talents and experiences.

Volunteers play vital, public-facing roles across our division: ushering at performances, assisting

with art and cultural programs, guiding museum tours, cataloging historic collections, and helping visitors in the Museum Store. They are essential to making Lakewood’s arts and cultural spaces feel welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant. They’re not just helping events run smoothly — they’re helping make meaningful moments happen.

Interested in joining our volunteer community? We’d love to connect! Reach out anytime to volunteer@lakewood.org to learn more about the many opportunities available in the Heritage, Culture & the Arts Division. We welcome new volunteers on a rolling basis and would be thrilled to have you be part of the story.
