The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT), also referred to as a “bed tax” or “room tax”, is a tax assessed to visitors staying in all lodging establishments within the city limits. In 2004, voters passed a ballot measure to ensure there would be an ongoing funding source for parks, recreation and open space by designating 10% of the TOT to fund Community Services/Parks & Recreation. An additional 2% goes to support public safety, and the remaining 2% to support affordable housing initiatives.

LIFELONG LEARNING CLASSES AT THE SENIOR CENTER

The Senior Center hosts ongoing lectures and presentations from local professors and business partners. These events are open to the public and free of charge. All ages are welcome, but material and classes are designed with seniors in mind. Join us and engage the mind!

THE HISTORY OF THE HOMER: FROM SHOELESS JO TO A-ROD

The home run is without a doubt, the most exciting play in baseball. While purists may enjoy the 1-0 pitcher’s duel, it is the “big fly,” the “long tater,” the “circuit clout” or the “round-tripper” that puts fans in the seats. In this lecture we will trace the “power surge” which transformed the Grand Old Game over the past century.

Mick Chantler (M.A. History) has been a student and instructor of Early American Studies for more than forty years. He currently teaches at several Bay Area lifelong learning programs, including Sonoma State University, Dominican University, UC Berkeley, and University of Santa Clara. His primary interests include the Revolutionary and Civil War eras, and he has also lectured on Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Mick is a member of several scholarly organizations including the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, the Lincoln Forum, and the Society for American Baseball Research.
