2016 Seniors Week Program

Message from the Mayor Welcome to Seniors Week 2016.

Seniors Week is an annual event celebrated nationally to acknowledge and thank our seniors for their valued contribution in our community.

Seniors Week 2016 will begin with a prelude on Saturday 5 November, thanks to the Friends of the Queens Park Theatre, with a screening of the 2008 Documentary, Young @ Heart.

You are invited to join me on the Mayor’s Mystery Bus Tour to come along for a ride and see all the wonderful changes that are happening within our City.

The varied list of programs and activities that encourage you to try something new and ‘have a go’ is back again this year, with yet another great line up of activities to try out.

As part of the City’s positive ageing focus, the City provides a diverse range of programs and groups available for Over 50’s at the QEII Seniors and Community Centre.

These include Gentle Gym, Discussion Group, Art Classes, Friendship Group and computer facilities with free Wi-Fi. I extend a sincere thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors who have kindly supported Seniors Week 2016. Without the generosity of our sponsors and the hard work of the volunteers on the Geraldton Seniors Week Committee we wouldn’t be able to produce such a line-up of events.

2016 Seniors Week Program

Program of Events SATURDAY 5 NOVEMBER Friends of Queens Park Theatre Movie Night - Young @ Heart 5.30pm nibbles/6pm movie at Queens Park Theatre.

Tickets are $10 Seniors & Pension card holders - $20 others and are available from the Civic Centre, Geraldton Regional Library, Geraldton Visitor Centre or online at www.queensparktheatre.com.au.

SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER QEII Community Art Class Exhibition Opening - 10am-12pm at Queens Park Theatre Artwork from the QEII Community Art Class students will be displayed at the QPT for the duration of Seniors Week. These paintings wll be available for sale.

Free event.

Neil Diamond Tribute Show - 2pm onwards at Queens Park Theatre Official opening of 2016 Seniors Week by City of Greater Geraldton Mayor, Shane Van Styn, followed by a Neil Diamond Tribute show. Afternoon tea will be served after the show. Sponsored by Geraldton Community Branch of Bendigo Bank.

Tickets start at $16 for Seniors & Pension card holders and are available from Civic Centre, Geraldton Regional Library, Geraldton Visitor Centre or online at www.queensparktheatre.com.au.

Program of Events MONDAY 7 NOVEMBER Mayor’s Mystery Bus Tour - 9am departing from the QEII Centre Join us for a tour of Geraldton with Mayor Shane Van Styn, followed by morning tea at the QEII Seniors & Community Centre.

Free event - bookings essential.

Have a go at Table Tennis - 1pm-3pm at the QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down and have a go at table tennis! Free event.

Art Gallery Tour - 2pm onwards at the Geralton Regional Art Gallery Experience a private tour of the City’s collection at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery, including a peek behind the scenes. Free event.

TUESDAY 8 NOVEMBER HMAS Sydney II Memorial Tours - 10.30am at HMAS Sydney Memorial Thirty minute tours of the HMAS Sydney Memorial. Free event.

Silver Chain Ageing Well Session & Morning Tea - 9.30am-10.30am at the QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down for an information session and morning tea. Free event.

Afternoon Tea & Entertainment - 1.30pm-3.30pm at Opal Geraldton Opal Geraldton is located on Milford St. Free event.

Have a go at Mahjong - 1pm-3pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down and have a go at learning Mahjong! Free event.

National Seniors Quiz Afternoon - 1pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Make your own table of six or join with others! Afternoon tea included. Hosted

by National Seniors Midwest Branch. Cost is $3.

Have a go at Ukulele - 2pm-4pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down and have a go at playing the Ukulele! Free event.

Australian Hearing - 9am-3pm at the QEII Seniors & Community Centre Book your free hearing screening on (08) 9956 6636. Free event.

Have a go at Outdoor Bowls - 1pm onwards at Wonthella Bowling Club Wonthella Bowling Club is located on Eigth St. Cost includes afternoon tea.

Cost is $5.

THURSDAY 10 NOVEMBER Ian Blayney MLA Morning Tea - 9.30am at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Enjoy a morning tea with local representative, Ian Blayney MLA. Free event.

E-books & E-audiobooks Workshop - 9.30am & 1.30pm at the Library Learn how to access and download e-books & e-audiobooks with your City of Greater Geraldton Library card. Free event - bookings essential.

Yamaji Elders Introduction to QEII Centre - 11.30am-1.30pm at the QEII Seniors & Community Centre. BBQ to be held at the QEII to introduce interested Elders to the Centre. Free event.

Have a go at Chess - 1pm-3pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down and learn how to play Chess! Free event.

Bingo - 1pm onwards at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Books available for purchase. Hosted by the Pensioners Social Club.

Seniors Games Afternoon - 1.30pm-3.30pm at QEII Centre Hosted by Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc Geraldton Branch & Seniors Action Group! Afternoon tea included. Cost is a gold coin donation.

Have a go at Belly Dancing - 2pm-4pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Come down and try your hand at Belly Dancing! Free event.

FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER Have a go at Art - 9am-12pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Create a masterpiece in oils, watercolour or acrylics. Free event.

Have a go at Knitting & Crochet - 9am-12pm at the QEII Centre Beginners & experienced most welcome. Free event.

Over 50’s Gentle Gym & Morning Tea - 9am at the QEII Centre Please wear gym shoes & bring a towel. Free event.

Story Time with Grandparents - 9.30am-10.30am at the Library Includes morning tea. Free event.

Rememberance Day - 11am at RSL & Bundiyarra Lest we forget.

Seniors Lunch & Entertainment- 12pm onwards at QEII Centre Enjoy a delicious lunch and great entertainment. Cost is $10.

Friendly Square Dance Club - 8pm-10pm at QEII Centre Join the Friendly Square Dance Club for a night of fun! Cost is $7.

SUNDAY 13 NOVEMBER Geraldton Choral Sociery Concert - 2pm at QEII Seniors & Community Centre Afternoon tea provided. Cost is $10 for Seniors/Pensioners & $15 for Adults.
