general information Edinburg Parks & Recreation Department The Parks & Recreation Department office is located on 123 E. Palm Drive, Edinburg.

Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Girls Basketball Camp The 13th Annual Girls Basketball Camp focuses on teaching youngsters, ages 5 through 12 or incoming 9th grade, fundamental skills and techniques of basketball. The all girl’s basketball camp will consist of agility drills, basketball handling and shooting techniques. The Basketball Camp is designed for girls ONLY who wish to learn new skills or improve on their existing skills. Edinburg School Basketball Coaches will assist in instructing this program. The Girls Basketball Camp program duration is June 9-12, 2014.

Little Dribblers Basketball Camp

The 15th Annual Youth Volleyball Camp focuses on teaching youngsters, ages 5 through 12 or incoming seventh grade, fundamental skills and techniques of volleyball. There will be demonstrations, agility, drills, and games. The Volleyball Camp is designed for girls ONLY who wish to learn new skills or improve on their existing skills. Edinburg School Volleyball Coaches will assist in instructing this program. The Youth Volleyball Camp program duration is June 16-19, 2014.

The 30th Annual Youth Basketball Camp focuses on teaching youngsters, ages 5 through 8, fundamental skills and techniques of basketball. Summer Athletic Programs Youth Tennis

Experience a fun and exciting lifetime sport. The Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Youth Tennis Program for boys and girls ages 5-17 years of age. It will create and maintain a child’s interest in tennis by combining fun and team spirit into learning. Everyone plays no one is cut, so everyone wins in his/her way. Drills, games, simplified rules, scoring and match play motivates new players to learn tennis. Program duration is from June 2, 2014, through July 25, 2014. Instructor will be announced. Participants must furnish their own racquet and wear tennis shoes.

ONLY the top 3 TAAF Region 2 Qualifiers for each age group event will be taken to the TAAF State Games scheduled for July 31-Aug. 3, 2014 in College Station, Texas.

Youth Track & Field

The City of Edinburg will sponsor a track & field program for all boys and girls 5-17 years of age. The program will address all facets of track and field during the program duration.

Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their talents during scheduled track and field meets. Participants will compete in a variety of events in age group pairings. All practices will be conducted at Cats Stadium. The track & field coach will be announced.

Program duration is May 5, 2014 through July 25, 2014, Monday through Friday.

Registration will be accepted at the Edinburg Recreation Center located on 123 E. Palm Drive. A Gus and Goldie T-Shirt is included with each registration while supplies last. There is no need to register for a specific level. All participants will be placed into classes according to their age and skills. On the first class period, all students will be observed and tested to ensure they are in the appropriate level. If you know your child’s current level, please indicate this to the instructor. LEARN TO SWIM COURSES Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months to 47 months)

Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control.

The two levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy. Class is held in the evening only, and class size is limited to 20 students

Preschool Aquatics (4 to 5 years old)

Throughout the three levels, preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills, all the while increasing their comfort level in and around the water.

Skills are age-appropriate, helping children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy social interactions with other children. As in all Swimming and Water Safety courses, your child will always know that it’s safety first.

Level 1 Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.

Level 2 Helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water.

Level 3 Helps children start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills to be comfortable in and around water.

Learn-to-Swim

(6 years through 14) Designed to help participants achieve maximum success, Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival and swim skills.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills - Helps participants feel comfortable in the water.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Gives participants success with fundamental skills.

Level 3 Stroke Development - Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water.

Level 4 Stroke Improvement - Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills.

Level 5

Level 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Refines the strokes so participants swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options that focus on preparing participants for more advanced courses, including the Water Safety instructor course, or other aquatic activities, such as competitive swimming or diving. AQUA JOGGING

The Fountain Swimming Pool is a kidney shaped swimming pool, which contains new bathing facilities, a 70 foot waterslide, a sand-pit volleyball court, tetherball, barbecue grill, and a picnic area. Fountain pool is located on 1227 McIntyre. For information call, 292-2125, or 381-5631.

This program is available to participants 6 to 15 years of age, who have gone through Level IV, or has the ability to perform the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, swim 50 yards comfortably, and wish to swim competitively in or out of the Valley. Swimming meets are scheduled throughout the summer.

This is an excellent way to run with less stress on the leg joints and lower back. The aqua belt suspends individuals in a vertical position while running in the water. Swimming ability required.

EDINBURG MUNICIPAL WATERPARK The Edinburg Municipal Waterpark is a three (3) pool facility which features a 125 foot long figure eight water slide. The Right of Way Division is managed by Juan J. Casas, Right of Way Superintendent, with the assistance of Oscar Moreno, Right of Way Supervisor. The Right of Way Division covers 38.5 square miles through out the City of Edinburg with thirteen employees.

Items covered by staff are mowing, weed eating, tree and palm tree trimming pick up trash and debris along the road way, removal of signs on light poles plus other additional duties.
