State law Requires Supermarkets, Restaurants, and Hotels to Donate Leftover Food
More than six million tons of food waste is thrown away every year, according to California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle).
Much of this food is edible, and the remaining part can be recycled. A component of SB 1383, a California law passed in 2022, aims to address this problem.
As of January 2022, SB 1383 requires large food producers such as supermarkets, grocery stores, wholesale food vendors and large venue facilities and events to participate in a food recovery program. Starting in January 2024, the list will be expanded to include large-capacity restaurants, hotels, and health care facilities. To be in compliance with SB 1383, food producers must commit to recovering the maximum amount of edible food that would otherwise end up in the landfill, maintain records of the recovered edible food, and establish a written agreement with a local food bank or food recovery agency.
Local organizations that take food donations in the area include:

The deadline is drawing near to enter the City’s Through My Lens photo contest. Entries are due no later than Monday, August 28.
Diamond Bar residents are encouraged to submit up to two of their favorite photographs for consideration. The photographs may have been taken at any time, so long as the subject is within Diamond Bar and falls within one of the five categories – people, pets, places, nature or digitally altered.

Through My Lens was created by the City in 2008 and is cosponsored by the Diamond Bar Community Foundation (DBCF). It is open to Diamond Bar residents of all ages and photography skill levels.
A winner and an honorable mention will be selected in each of the five categories in both age divisions – youth (age 17 and younger) and adult (age 18 and older), and contestant with the highest score overall will be named the grand prize winner.
In addition to receiving certificates from the City Council and other local elected officials, the DBCF will be awarding cash prizes to individuals with winning photographs ($50 for each honorable mention, $100 for each winner, and $150 for the grand prize).
