This event starts with free parking in a large lot, free entry and complimentary refreshments while you stroll inside and browse rows of handmade wares made by local and regional artisans and crafters. Holiday Dinner with Madrigals The Senior Center’s Holiday Dinner returns on Tuesday, December 4, 5:30-7:00 pm. The highlight of the evening is the Davis Madrigals Octet Singers performing holiday songs and dressed in Renaissance attire. Tickets are $20 and include appetizers, dinner and dessert provided by Atria Covell Gardens, and no-host wine from Davis Sunset Rotary.

Lifelong Learning A Davis Institution Turns 50

Learn About Veterans Services

As part of the center’s occasional That’s So Davis! series, our spotlight turns to the UC Davis School of Medicine and its 50th anniversary. Dr. Frederic (Rick) Troy and Dr. Joe Tupin, both founding faculty members at the school, will speak at the center on Thursday, November 1, 10:00-11:00 am. Learn what it took to get the new medical school established, some highlights of its history, and how it has grown into a nationally acclaimed center of excellence in learning and research. No RSVP needed.

As Veterans Day approaches, the Senior Center will host a free presentation by Yolo County’s Veterans Services Officer, Salvador Torres, on Thursday, November 8, 1:30-2:30 pm.

Torres assists veterans, their dependents and survivors in obtaining benefits from federal, state and local agencies administering programs for veterans, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Service Office can help with comprehensive benefits counseling; claim preparation, submission and follow up; medical, dental and survivors benefits; housebound aid and attendance allowance; burial benefits and more. No RSVP needed.

Learn About Medicare Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 31 to learn about Medicare from Carolynn Washington, HICAP education outreach coordinator. She’ll offer two different presentations that day. At 10:00 am, the first will cover the Basics of Medicare for those who are new to the program. At 1:00 pm, the second presentation will be a Medicare Update, explaining Medicare open enrollment and changes relative to Medicare insurance plans, including Part D Plans.

HICAP, the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program also offers free individual appointments at the center.

Cannabis Town Hall The City of Davis will host a “Cannabis Town Hall-Everything You wanted to Know but Were Afraid To Ask” on Thursday, November 8 at 5:30 pm at the Veterans Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th Street. How to Fall Sometimes a fall is inevitable. Learn to reduce impact and prevent injury in this class taught by Debbie Eernisse. Held at the Civic Center Gym, 23 Russell Blvd. Thursday, November 8, 2:00-4:00 pm. $21.

Blood Pressure Checks The Senior Center will offer free blood pressure checks Friday, November 16, 11:00 am-noon. Blood pressure checks can help with early diagnosis of hypertension.

Volunteer and retired nurse Priscilla Ivler will be here on the third Friday of every month, 11:00 am-noon, to offer this drop-in service.

Pilates Workout Defined Pilates is a fitness program developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, and it’s practiced worldwide by over 11 million people. The discipline involves controlled movements that can improve flexibility, build strength and develop control and endurance. The emphasis is on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance. We offer Pilates monthly, taught by Bob Stephenson on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 pm. $50 for eight November sessions.

International Folk Dancing

AARP’s Smart Driver Course at the Senior Center will be Wednesday & Thursday, November 7 & 8, 9:00 am-1:00 pm. You must attend both days of this eight-hour course to receive a completion certificate. Many insurance companies offer discounts to older drivers who successfully complete the course.

Register in advance with a check payable to AARP at the front desk, $15 for AARP members/$20 for non-members.

No dance experience required in this relaxed class with easy-tolearn steps set to music. The monthly class is offered Tuesdays, November 6-27, 10:30 -11:30 am. Stop by, go online (#222000), or call (with wavier on file) to register. $21

Ukulele Lessons Sign up for something fun, and challenge your brain. Free Vouchers for Eligible Riders

Sing-Along For Fun

A limited number of free vouchers are available for riders registered to use either Davis Community Transit or YoloBus Special. Those who have already received vouchers since July 1 are not eligible. If you like to sing, this free monthly program is for you! Lyrics of popular songs (show tunes, old classics and folk tunes) are projected on a screen, and a live piano player joins in. Stop by on Wednesday, November 7, 4:205:45 pm. No singing experience is required, and no RSVP is needed. The program includes a 15minute social at the end for those who would like to create community with others.

Smoke Alarm Battery Change Day

Continuing its annual tradition, the Rotary Club of Davis will install new smoke alarm batteries for older adults in Davis on Saturday, November 10. Sign up by calling the Senior Center at 530-757-5696

by Wednesday, November 7. Each household must sign up individually. When you sign up, please let us know how many smoke alarms you have, and tell us if you have high ceilings.

Our sincere gratitude goes out to the George and Lena Valente Foundation for their generous donation of $40,000 to our Senior Services Endowment Fund. Since 2000, the Foundation has supported the center and its participants, and we are grateful for their contributions. Recent purchases with Fund dollars such as fitness equipment, including portable mirrors and a ballet barre for balance and yoga classes; Senior Center brochures; and funding for our Dianne Hinsz Scholarship program, which helps seniors with limited incomes to attend classes.

Mac Users Group

The club celebrates our successful year of genealogy by feasting on favorite family foods and sharing tales of family heirlooms on Tuesday, November 27 at 1:00 pm. This popular meeting allows us to get to know each other better and enjoy the season.

Bring a favorite appetizer or dessert if you like, and if you wish, share its recipe and the story of the dish. The theme for the heirloom-sharing portion of our gathering is “family pets”. You may bring photos or small mementos such as pet toys or collars to share.

Our genealogy library is staffed and open to the public each Wednesday and Friday, 1:00-3:30 pm.

Travelaires Welcomes Sue Barnes Davis Travelaires has a new president, Sue Barnes. Sue has planned many day trips and events for older adults and is eager to work with the Travelaires volunteers and participants.

While Sue assumes this part-time role, she continues her work as director of the UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center. She lives in Davis, and commutes weekly to Southern California. Sue’s career includes a variety of management positions at UC Davis, including director of both the UC Davis Craft Center and the UC Davis Retiree Center. She also worked as the recreation director at the University Retirement Community. Sue plans to retire from UCLA in July, and is looking forward to being in Davis full-time.

We thank long-time executive director Kay Jeffery for her many years of leadership of Davis Travelaires. We’ll miss you, Kay!

Chinese Culture Club The Chinese Culture Club will meet Friday, November 9, 12:30-2:30 pm. (No meeting November 23 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.) The group explores Chinese culture through educational videos with English subtitles and practices traditional Chinese exercises and games. Everyone is welcome.

Davis Dynamos This group includes those who enjoy walking for exercise or pleasure, being outdoors, sightseeing, history, seeing new places and meeting nice people.

Arts & Crafts Watercolor Group Join us Fridays, November 2, 16, & 30 when Morgan Wright returns to the topic of Trompe l’oeil by popular request. No special equipment is required, just bring your art supplies.

On Friday, November 9, a representative from Daniel Smith will talk about their watercolor paints, how they are made, new pigments and samples of some popular paints. Our December Holiday Brunch will be held December 7.

We will need volunteers to help. More information to follow. The Valente room is open at 9:00 am, announcements start at 9:25 and instruction at 9:30. We finish up about 11:00.

Open Arts/Crafts Studio The well-lit and inviting Valente Room is open to all artists and crafters to work on your own “Do It Yourself” project on Mondays, 9:00 am-12:00 noon. Project Linus of Yolo County Join Project Linus to make blankets for children in the community who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. Come to our gathering on Wednesday, November 14, 1:30-3:30 pm to share ideas, patterns and lots of good conversation.
