Trees and Shrubs: Identification & Ecology 18Y+

Wildflowers come and go with the seasons, but woody plants stick around throughout the year. As the vegetative backbone that defines many California landscapes, trees and shrubs play important ecological roles. In this class, we will learn to identify common trees and shrubs of the Bay Area and talk about the ecological stories they are telling. You can expect to leave this class with a better ability to interpret vegetation on the landscape and what it is telling you. We will pay special attention to how tree and shrub species respond differently to wildfire. We will begin with a one-hour classroom lecture and discussion and then spend the rest of the afternoon taking a short hike to look at trees and shrubs at a nearby field site. Birding Basics

McCLELLAN RANCH

Lichens are all around us and they have fascinating stories to tell to those who listen. This one-day workshop will focus on developing skills for identifying common Bay Area macrolichens (foliose and fruticose lichens) to genus. This workshop will include a classroom session where we will cover basic lichen anatomy and terminology, and discuss the roles lichens play in ecosystems such as supporting wildlife. We will also take a field trips to a nearby natural area to view lichens in the natural habitats. We will also include lab time for students to work on identifying lichens with guidance from the instructor. Students will learn to recognize and distinguish between pollution-tolerant lichen communities that we often see in cities and the more pristine communities that occur in places with high air quality. After taking this course you will be sure to observe lichens, big or small, almost everywhere you go!

18Y+

From enormous Eagles and Vultures to tiny Warblers and Goldfinches, this 2-part class will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills you need to recognize our local birds. If you are already a birder, this refresher will improve your current skills. You will learn how to find and identify the common birds of Cupertino as well as other nearby birding locations. In Session 1 (W), students will learn essential binocular and field guide use, and the fundamentals of bird identification. In Session 2 (Su), students will enjoy a guided field trip to McClellan Ranch where they will practice finding and identifying local birds with our expert instructors. Grade 4-6

This curriculum involves using mini-robotics kits which are designed to develop and improve: critical thinking, creativity and imagination, engineering skills, and decision making. We will be including coding into the curriculum and several unplugged exercises to further strengthen their logical and analytical thinking. The integration of hardware and software will enable kids to better visualize what they code. A significant chunk of the curriculum time will be devoted to journeying with the micro:bit, taking them from their first use of a block programming language to writing and evaluating algorithms, becoming a confident coder, and beyond! Material fee of $45 will cover the cost of a Micro:bit kit and related components which kids can take back after the camp. No Class 9/16, 11/11,11/25,12/2.

Tennis Court at Cupertino Sports Center

16Y+

For students graduating with 1-2 sessions of Beginning Tennis. In this level, we add more movement to groundstrokes and develop basic left and right control. Players at this level will participate in fun and challenging point play simulations. Volleys and net play are also introduced as well as basic doubles play.

Bronze, Silver, Gold Jr Development Team 8-16Y

Bronze is for students who have graduated from the 3 leveled program (Ready! Rally! Play!). Students must be able to demonstrate a rally and also can get a consistent serve in the correct service box. This program is designed to prepare students for matchplay. Silver and Gold level players are capable of consistent rallying from the baseline, as well as demonstrate a proper serve. More advanced footwork technique will be introduced to improve court coverage. Players at this level often compete for their school teams or play USTA Tournaments.

SPORTS CENTER

READY! Our entry level is focused on developing the skills necessary to play the sport of tennis. We focus on fun activities that develop technique, ball striking, tracking, racket control, and footwork. RALLY! This level continues the tennis journey by focusing on rallying and ball control. Players will continue to develop technique using the ball and court size appropriate for their age and level. Players should be able to hold a simple rally and get their serve in consistently before moving on to PLAY! The PLAY level places an emphasis on the skills necessary to play a real match. Coaches will continue to develop modern swing techniques as players focus on movement and ball control. Players graduating from the PLAY! level can demonstrate the skills necessary to play a match at the Orange or Green Ball level and are ready to move into our Junior Development family of classes or try-out for the Competition Training program.

Intermediate Tennis

16Y+

SPORTS CENTER

For students who have completed 2-3 sessions of Advanced Beginning Tennis. Students will be introduced to more advanced techniques and shots like topspin and overheads. Net play and basic doubles strategy are introduced. Students also improve their overall confidence and consistency of groundstrokes and serve. Added movement becomes a key component at this level. Coaches introduce basic strategies and matchplay. Tennis Court at Cupertino Sports Center Codes

LIABILITY WAIVER & PHOTO RELEASE WAIVER, RELEASE, HOLD HARMLESS AND AGREEMENT NOT TO SUE I desire to participate in this PROGRAM, ACTIVITY, EVENT, MEMBERSHIP, OR CLASS (hereinafter, ACTIVITY). In consideration of the City of Cupertino accepting my application, participation, or entry into this ACTIVITY, I agree to release, waive, and discharge any and all claims for damages, death, personal injury, or property damage which I may have, or which hereafter accrue to me, against the City as a result of my participation in the ACTIVITY. This release is intended to discharge the City, its City Council, boards and commissions, officers, agents, employees, servants and volunteers, any other involved municipality or public agency (hereinafter, Indemnitees) from and against any and all liability arising out of or connected in any way with my participation in the ACTIVITY, even though that liability may arise out of the negligence or carelessness of other participants or the active or passive negligence of Indemnitees. I further understand that accidents and injuries can result from the ACTIVITY; knowing the risks, nevertheless, I agree to assume those risks, and to release and hold harmless the Indemnitees who (through negligence or carelessness) might otherwise be liable to me (or my heirs or assigns) for damages. In consideration for being permitted to participate in the ACTIVITY, I agree for myself, my heirs, administrators, executors, and assigns not to sue the City or any of the Indemnitees for any injury, death, damage, or loss of personal property that may arise out of, or in connection with, my participation in the ACTIVITY from whatever cause, including the active or passive negligence of the City or other participants, except for the sole negligence or willful misconduct of the City. Should a third party make a charge or claim against the City, I agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the City from any and all claims, demands, actions or suits, and any other legal, administrative or regulatory proceeding arising out of, or in connection with, my participation in the ACTIVITY. I understand this agreement and the promises contained herein are binding on myself and my heirs, administrators, executors and assigns, and shall be interpreted as broad and inclusive as allowed by law. If a court of competent jurisdiction declares any portion of this agreement invalid, the remainder of the agreement shall continue in full force and effect. I further allow my photograph to be taken and used for City purposes without compensation. I have carefully read this agreement and fully understand its contents. I am aware that it is a full release of all liability and sign it on my own free will.
