A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
I am delighted to share some exciting updates about our community's latest developments and projects. Our town is growing, and with this growth comes new opportunities and benefits for all of us.
Firstly, the ground has been broken on the new Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins. This addition will bring more dining options and conveniences for our residents and visitors alike. Additionally, the construction of the latest McDonald's location on National Parks Highway is well underway, and we anticipate its completion soon. These new establishments are both a testament to our community's growth and a boost to our local economy, providing new jobs and services.
Looking ahead, we are committed to fostering more development projects. Our key focus is addressing the need for affordable housing to ensure everyone in our community can access a safe and comfortable home.
We are installing an 80-foot satin/stainless steel flag pole on the west side of the beach bandshell. As a special tribute to our country, we will fly a 20x38-foot US flag on special occasions and holidays. The Public Works Department is scheduled to pour the concrete for the flagpole next week, with the installation set for June 18th. This grand flag will be a wonderful centerpiece for our Fourth of July celebration and a constant reminder of our shared values and pride in our country.
As a reminder, our community has plenty of summer activities to enjoy. The Carlsbad Water Park opened on Memorial Day Weekend, and we are pleased that so many people gave terrific feedback on this facility over

the week. The water park is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $5 per person. It is closed on Mondays except for holidays: Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the 4th of July. We hope many of you will take the time to cool off from the heat at the water park.
The Carlsbad miniature golf course is across the river from the Water Park. This 18-hole course is fun for all ages and has an admission price of $5 per person. Its hours are the same as those for the Lake Carlsbad Golf course: open all week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. except for Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m. The Pecos River also has pickleball, volleyball, and disc courts for group activities.
Our community partners also have many activities for families to enjoy. Cavernfest is next weekend, June 7th and 8th. There will be live music, food trucks, vendors, and more. Mainstreet is also hosting its first farmers market of the season on June 13th. We hope you all enjoy your summer and make the most of what our community offers.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for our community’s growth. Together, we are making our town a better place to live, work, and enjoy.
Sincerely,
CarlsbadMayorRickLopez

Inspired by Science will be honored as “Non-Profit of the Year” at the upcoming 2024 New Mexico Excellence in STEM Awards, commonly called “the STEMYS.” The STEMYS, which are hosted by the Air Force Research Lab Tech Engagement Office and Q Station, will be presented at a formal ceremony in Albuquerque on June 21, 2024.
“Kids love science, and we love opening their eyes to new possibilities,” says Inspired by Science’s President Deena Antiporda. “We are incredibly honored to accept this award and thank all of our supporters and volunteers for making Inspired by Science’s work possible!”
Inspired by Science was established in 2013 by Antiporda, her husband and children out of their kitchen, which continues to serve as a laboratory from time to time. It’s first event was a summer camp at what is now Southeast New Mexico College, which has continued to this day. Today, Inspired by Science also offers workshops and events throughout the year, held at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute and the Carlsbad Public Library. The cost to participate in its events is low thanks to grants and donations.
“Engaging kids with fun, hands-on projects has been our winning formula. Our goal has been to make STEM education accessible to all students.”
Inspired by Science achieved 501c3 status in 2020 and is governed by a Board of Directors. One of the organization’s near-term goals is to identify a location to expand its operations and possibly offer on-site workshops.

Carlsbad Fire Department
The Carlsbad Fire Department operates out of 5 fire stations spread throughout the City. Every dedicated department member is a firefighter and an emergency medical technician and responds to all types of emergencies within city limits, including building fires, wildland fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, and swift water or flooding rescues. Carlsbad Fire Department also responds to all medical emergencies in southern Eddy County, including Brantley Lake State Park, Carlsbad Caverns NationalPark, andQueen,WhiteCity, andLovingcommunities.
The Carlsbad Fire Department is committed to preserving and protecting the lives and property of our community through prevention, preparedness, and effective emergency response. We are continually looking for additional ways to positively affect everyone who livesinortravelsthroughourgreatcity.
We will expand our prevention efforts later this year by adding a Fire Inspector position within the Fire Marshal’s Office. Adding additional inspectors allows us to identify and address fire or life safety issues in businesses around town, offer home fire safety surveys to residents, conduct fire safety or fire extinguishers training classes to civic organizations or companies, andexpandourelementaryschoolfirepreventionprogram.
Benjamin Franklin, in addition to being known as a scientist and diplomat, was also a firefighter and fire company leader. One of his many famous quotes is, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Carlsbad Fire Department understands, just like Benjamin Franklin did, that failure is unacceptable when lives are at stake in emergency incidents.Toavoidthis,Carlsbadfirefighters
train constantly, constantly working to improve their abilities and skills. Last year, we conducted 12,770 hours of training, practicinghowtosafelyandeffectivelysave lives in every emergency. And we are on tracktodoevenmoretrainingthisyear.

without fire stations to respond from and reliable emergency vehicles to respond in. Over the last seven years, the City has built one new fire station and significantly expanded a second station to maintain the fire department’s ability to serve the growing communities and businesses on the south side of town. We are currently planning a new public safety complex on the city's north side, which will house a fire station, a police station, and a fire training ground. This new station will allow us to quickly respond to emergencies occurring onthenorthsideofthePecosRiver.
Within our fire stations, the Carlsbad Fire Department maintains a modern fleet of fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, river patrol boats, and various specialty vehicles for handling motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials spills, wildland fires, aircraft fires, andtechnicalrescues.TheCity’sPolice,Fire, andAmbulanceGarageworkshardtokeepall of these vehicles in top condition, and we maintain a regular vehicle replacement schedule to respond when needed. Because most of our emergency responses are for medical emergencies, our ambulances are replaced much more frequently than our other vehicles. The Fire Department has put two new ambulances in service within the last 18 months,andwewillordertwomoreambulancesbeforetheendofthisyear.Ourothereme-
rgency vehicles are replaced as needed when maintenance and repair costs outweigh the replacement cost. We are exploring funding options to replace our oldest firefighting vehicle, a 19-year-old ladder truck at Fire Station 1. Typically, older ambulances and fire trucks that we replace still have some service life left in them and are donated to volunteer fire departments around the state that would not otherwise be able to afford these expensivevehicles.
The Carlsbad Fire Department is always open, and personnel are always staffing our fire stations. Carlsbad firefighters work a rotating shift schedule of 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off duty. During their 48 hours on duty, the firefighters work, train, eat, and sleep at thefirestations.

At many points throughout their career, they will miss birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays with their families because they are on shift working. If there are a large number of 911 calls or if a natural disaster occurs, they will often work their entire 48-hour shift without being able to take a break, eat a meal, or get any rest. Even though they work long hours and regularly put their lives at risk, our firefighters cannot imagine doing anything else. Every member of the Fire Department believes that saving lives and protecting the homes and businessesinourcommunityisthebestjobintheworld.
We offer a ride-along program for those curious about a firefighter's life, allowing someone to spend the day in one of our stations with our firefighters. Ride-alongs help with all our crews' activities and tasks to stay prepared for emergency responses, including checking vehicles and equipment, inspecting safety gear, and conducting fire and medical training. Anyone interested in doing a ride-along with the Fire Department can callusat885-3125orcomebytheFireDepartment
