MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Celebrating arts and culture in our City

Welcome to the digital program for the City’s second Flourish Community Arts Festival.

This November, we’re excited to celebrate our vibrant arts and culture scene with a diverse lineup of activities, workshops and exhibitions.

With events covering art, nature, history, music, dance, photography, theatre and more, Flourish is set to inspire and delight. The City is proud to have supported a number of these events through its Community Events Grant.

At the heart of Flourish is our beloved Community Art Awards and Exhibition. I encourage you to take the opportunity to view and maybe even purchase one of the exceptional works on display in this curated exhibition.

Don’t miss the City’s second RISE-Up Art Market, where you can support local makers and artisans as they share their unique creations with the community.

For those who enjoy a stroll, our self-guided street art maps at the back of the program will lead you through our town centres to explore an array of creative murals from outstanding artists.

Whether you’re a resident or visitor, I hope you take the time to explore all that Flourish and our great City have to offer.

The City of Bayswater is proud to host Sarah Weston as the 2024 Flourish Community Arts Festival Artist in Residence. Sarah is a 35-year-old proud Noongar woman with family ties to Kanaeng, Ballardong and Whadjuk country. She is a contemporary Indigenous artist with a unique style. Sarah’s artistic journey is enriched by the stories of the Elders in her family, who bore witness to the Stolen Generation and are survivors. Her work is a testament to resilience, echoing the struggles and triumphs of her lineage.

Committed to fostering creativity within her community, Sarah engages in projects with local sporting clubs and Indigenous children’s homework classes, imparting cultural wisdom through art. Her dedication extends to designing Derbarl Yerrigan’s Reconciliation Action Plan shirts and letterheads for their 50th anniversary celebration, a testament to her passion for preserving and celebrating Indigenous heritage.

Q&A with Sarah Weston

What can people expect from your residency?

People can learn about the symbols depicted in my artwork to get a better understanding of what the picture is telling you and ask questions about Aboriginal art. They can watch me create some of my artworks or come in and have a yarn. I have an artwork for the community to engage in, so they can also help add their own unique fingerprint to the piece.

What impact do you hope your residency will create?

I hope to help bridge the community’s interest in Aboriginal artwork. The residency will also help strengthen the passion I have to paint and share my artwork with the community and keep connections open and strong.

What form of art do you specialise in?

I paint Aboriginal contemporary art and have an interest in recycling wooden items. I love to upcycle or recycle and give the object a new life.

What does art mean to you and what can people take away from immersing themselves in the creative world?

Art to me is an extension of my inner thoughts and how I view the world, interpret what I see and how it makes me feel. I hope when people leave the space, they take what they have experienced with me and turn it into their own art story, tapping into their creative connections and create their next journey.

Why should people get involved in Flourish and, particularly, your residency?

By getting involved in Flourish, the community can venture out and bridge the divide and witness very talented artists. Flourish is an awesome place to experience the next level of artistry and this residency platform has given me the confidence to showcase myself and share my contemporary Aboriginal art with the wider community.

Upcycle Wooden Objects with Sarah Weston

Wednesday 13 November, 10am – 1pm

Free

eventbrite.com/e/upcycle-wooden-objectswith-sarah-weston-tickets-1033100701007

There is no right or wrong way to paint or upcycle a wooden object. Once you’ve chosen the one that speaks to you, choose your colours and I’ll show you the techniques, tips and tricks I use to create intricate designs and shapes. Once you’re done, we’ll give it a coat of varnish to seal in the paint and your unique object is ready.

Earlier this year, the City initiated Moorditj Wirin Circle, an Aboriginal women’s yarning group. Members have created a special artwork to enter into the Community Group category of WALGA’s Showcase in Pixels competition.

As the 2024 theme is Heroes Among Us, the artwork has been designed to recognise the Stolen Generation Survivors. The artwork uses acrylic paints on canvas with 47 hibiscus leaves, each one representing a mission in WA. The native hibiscus flower was chosen to symbolise the Stolen Generation, as it survives in harsh conditions and is a symbol of strength and resilience. Leaves connect the flowers, just as the Stolen Generation Survivors across WA are connected, with the dots representing the colours of the boodja (land) across the state.

If selected as the Community Group winner, the artwork will be displayed on Yagan Square’s digital tower in Perth. Throughout Flourish, the artwork will be on display at Maylands Library.
