CITY UPDATES

SUMMERTIME IS HERE! A MESSAGE FROM OUR AQUATICS SUPERVISOR

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Summertime in California is full of warm weather, bright sunshine, and people surrounding themselves with water activities. It is often why people travel from everywhere to visit our state and City. From lakes and rivers to beaches and pools, we are fortunate enough to have many wonderful options in and around American Canyon.

AQUATICS

Before joining the City of American Canyon in the Fall of 2017, I worked for the YMCA in Berkeley overseeing a wide range of recreational programming, including Aquatics and its three pools. My experiences at the YMCA helped shape my passion for offering quality programs to a community. The more I learned about American Canyon, the more it became clear that this is where I wanted to be. I feel very lucky to be a part of such a unique, passionate, and growing community, not to mention in a City with a great pool.

SUMMER CAMPS

I believe that everyone should learn how to swim and have the access to do so. American Canyon should be no exception. This Summer, our Aquatics Programming will be full of learn to swim opportunities for all ages, open swims for family bonding, and fitness programs to continue or jump start your health and wellness goals. Be sure to check out everything our Parks and Recreation Department has to offer this Summer, including summer camps for kids and teens, outdoor adventures for all ages, and our beautiful parks and open spaces.

YOUTH SPORTS

If for any reason you need support, encouragement, or have feedback to share, please come and talk to our Parks and Recreation staff. I am committed to making our services and programs better and more enjoyable for this community. Thank you and have a great Summer! Joedy Michael City of American Canyon Aquatics Supervisor

FREE OUTDOOR COMMUNITY EVENTS

Bring your own bike and join us on this memorable day of bicycle fun! This event will inspire you to ride more regularly. We will educate adults and kids on safety, and will have a free repair clinic, a bicycle rodeo skills course, bike decorating, and face painting. Take an easy 3-mile bike ride with us through the city led by ride marshals from American Canyon Cycling. The ride will conclude at Community Park II with cool refreshments.

You won't want to miss our annual, one-of-a-kind nighttime event. Enjoy looking at stars and planets through telescopes, take a planet walk, participate in glow-in-the-dark fun, watch for meteors, and enjoy delicious s’mores! This year, dance in our new silent disco, a fun activity for participants as well as spectators. This night aligns with the Persieds Meteor Shower. We hope you will join us and celebrate the end of summer before school resumes.

This is a great event for amateur astronomers! Join us for stargazing and a chance to make and launch your own paper LED lighted rocket. We will have fun astronomy-based activities for families. Do you have a telescope that has been collecting dust or that you don't know how to use? Bring it with you! Volunteer astronomers will help you with the basics of viewing the night sky through your telescope.

Participate in an outdoor trail conservation project right here in American Canyon. We love our Wetlands! Now the Wetlands needs our love and care. We are seeking a group of awesome volunteers to help us with fencing and trail improvements. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Come on out, make and impact, and be a part of the positive change we want to see in our community!

The sun is something we all long for. It can boost your mood, increase your level of Vitamin D, and the sun on your skin feels wonderful! Another great element of Summer is the fresh air. Fresh air can help strengthen your immune system and boost your heart health. Then there are our stunning nighttime stars. Going out at night rather than sitting in artificial indoor light can help balance your circadian rhythms and help you sleep better. All these are great reasons to participate in our Summer outdoor activities. We hope you make the outdoors a daily part of your Summer! Outdoor events are weather permitting.
