‘Amazing’ benefits of ‘orange-zone’ exercising The new-to-Canberra workout class Orangetheory ticks all the boxes for a fun, resultsoriented workout – and even gets you burning calories once it’s all over and you’re safely back on the sofa, says Orangetheory studio manager Pauline Blackman. “It’s an amazing workout that everyone would love,” says Pauline. “You can work to your own fitness level – there could be elite athletes next to complete beginners in the class, because everyone’s goal is to complete the class in the way that’s best for them.” Orangetheory Fitness will open in mid April with trial classes available from the first of the month on Gribble Street, Gungahlin, as the nationwide headquarters, and promises to bring a new way of exercising to Canberra. Brought to Australia by master franchisor Richard Peil, who also brought in Anytime Fitness, Orangetheory has more than 500 studios worldwide. “It’s a new brand here, although it’s very popular in the States and there are successful studios in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane so far,” Pauline says.
“Your workout is highly monitored, with your heart rate projected on a screen so you can see how hard you’re working – but it’s a very individual workout despite being in a class setting. “You get the benefits of personal training with the motivation of being in a group.” A combination of cardio and weights, using treadmills, rowing machines, suspension unit systems and free weights in a 60-minute class, Pauline describes the workout as high-intensity, low-impact interval training. “It covers strength training, power and endurance all in one workout, so it’s very efficient and you get a lot done in that hour,” she says. “The workout changes daily so your body never adapts, always changes, always achieves results. “You also get the benefits of an experienced personal trainer, with the energy of a group workout to motivate you along. The music is fun, and the lights are dimmed and orange. “I’ve done so many workouts in the past 10 years, but I wish I’d had access to this sooner! You very quickly see results. It’s difficult but you always have options and variations.” The name Orangetheory comes from the focus on exercising within the
“orange zone”, says Pauline – which means staying above a certain percentage of your heart rate for at least a third of the hour-long workout. And the best thing about working out in the orange zone is the “EPOC” that follows, she says. “EPOC is a scientific term for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, and after working out with the right level of intensity in the orange zone, you get the after effects of burning calories when your workout is over,” Pauline says. “As trainers, we can help to push you further or pull you back. Members burn an estimated 500 to 1000 calories in 60 minutes, and keep burning calories for up to 36 hours afterwards. “You can clearly see the level everyone is working at and can modify what they’re doing accordingly. “As a personal trainer, the heart rate monitors allow us to clearly see where everyone is working, so you’re accountable the whole time. It’s very motivating!” Orangetheory Fitness, 10/10 Gribble Street, Gungahlin. Call 6210 5010 or email studioaus006@orangetheoryfitness.com.au for more information on prices and class timetables
