What’s in store / Cooleman Court
Time to have a few minutes for yourself
Butcher Pat grows his own TOWARDS the centre’s northern entrance is Home Grown Meats, a specialty butcher where the meat is literally home grown by owner Pat Marando on his farm near Murrumbateman. “I’ve got cross-bred sheep and Black Angus cattle,” he says, adding that he also carries a large variety of gourmet meats and hard-to-find cuts. “We make sure we’ve got a lot of variety and most of the meat we sell is grass-fed,” Pat says. He says grass-fed meat tastes nicer and is normally softer because the animal is more relaxed, as opposed to their counterparts that grow quickly eating grain in feedlots. Pat only opened the shop about four months ago, having previously sold his meat in Kaleen for 23 years. “It’s really good here,” he says. “The customers are really, really nice people. It’s like a big family where you get to know all the customers, especially now with Christmas orders, we’re getting to know a lot of people by name.”

Guru with a passion for local flavours BACK down the escalator on the centre’s ground floor is a Coffee Guru franchise owned by Yvette Molan, who became the store’s manager eight years ago before becoming a part owner three years later and buying our her partners 18 months after that. “Apart from the core products of the franchise, we’re given free reign on what else we put in our stores so we can tailor it to our market, which is a freedom a lot of other franchises unfortunately don’t have,” Yvette says. “For example, I’ve been working with a local Canberra supplier called
Kiwi Kitchen for our cakes. She’s an incredibly talented baker, and there’s another small business I support called Kindle Cafe and Catering; they supply all our savoury focaccias and sandwiches.” Yvette says Coffee Guru headquaters has just put on a new, Coffee Guru Weston EN1663.indd award-winning roaster by the name of Dennis Wells, who has reworked the chain’s Premium Blend to make it even tastier. “The actual community of Weston Creek makes Cooleman Court such a nice place to be, and such a nice place to have a business,” she says.
