State: Bidar (Karnataka) One day trip

I

f an arduous working schedule is tiring you down and you’re looking for an instant getaway, Bidar is the place to visit for you. Counting down from Miyapur, it is less than120 kms. The route is pretty straightforward. Getting onto National Highway 9 (NH9) (Hyderabad-Pune-Mumbai), drive around for 85 kms and take a right turn (there are well marked out sign boards) onto the Southern Highway 4 (SH4) and travel another 26 kms to reach Bidar. Starting early will help avoid the early traffic within the city premises. After driving about 3 hours away from the city, a stop is highly recommended. At around 60-65 kms from the city, you can try the steaming hot ‘idlies’ and ‘poori’ at Haritha Restaurant (APTDC). On the hygiene quotient, this place aces, even providing clean bathrooms. With excellent roads and sparse traffic, this journey will feel much like a breeze in the park. As soon as you enter Bidar (A), you’re welcomed by an old fort gate on the right, which is the old city. Travelling further down the road, there is a clock tower

(CHAUBARA) that is easily identifiable. The first stop you must make is at the remains of the ancient theological college (B), ‘Mohammad Gawan Madrasa’. Built in the year 1472 by Gawan, a Persian exile and scholar of the Bahmani court, it was one all over the country. For photographers, this place is a photographic-haven. Travelling another kilometer leads you to the Bidar Fort (C). After getting through several fort gates (the whole idea of fort gates is to make entry difficult, so drive safely here) you reach the fort. The museum inside the fort is a plethora of information. The fort is kept under lock (to avoid scribbling). The various ‘Mahals’ inside, especially the ‘Rangeen Mahal’ will leave you spell bound. The museum displays some interesting artifacts like huge locks and large guns. The ‘Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Saheb’ (E) is definitely a must visit in Bidar. It’s easy to get Gurudwara, as there is a gate on the SH4 that leads to it. You’re guided by sign boards all the way till the Gurudwara. Do remember to carry

Tips: a) Carry a map (print-out from Google) for Bidar city if you do not have GPS b) Start early so that you can finish the fort before it gets too hot c) Ask to be shown around inside Bidar fort and tip at the end d) Carry cloth to cover head if you plan to visit the Gurudwara e) The Rohit restaurant close to the Gurudwara is highly recommended.

shawls for women and handkerchief for men to cover the hair which is mandatory to enter the premises. In case you forget you can always get them at the Gurudwara. Also, don’t miss out on the ghee filled ‘Halwa’ sold at the Gurudwara. For lunch, fantastic Punjabi cuisine and vegetarian food is served at Rohit Restaurant. It’s not far from the Gurudwara either, making it easily reachable. The place is pretty clean and the naan/ dal fry combination served here is delicious. This place is highly recommended. Starting off post lunch, would help reach the city by sunset.

National: Rajasthan (One week trip) Day 01: Sawai Madhopur (Arrival) If the drive to the sanctuary by a canter is not enthralling enough, then if you’re lucky you might end up seeing a tiger. Day 02: Jaipur Start the next day again by driving down to the sanctuary (Considered one of the best sanctuaries in India, sheltering about 57 tigers, among several other animals). The drive across lush green field and tress in the sanctuary will take your breath away. If you’re carrying your own camera, you will be in for a fun filled photo shoot with nature. Start back for Jaipur and by afternoon visit places in there like the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and bazaars that are in plenty. Day 03: Jodhpur On the 3rd day’s morning, must visits are the Amber Fort travelling via the Hawa Mahal and the Water Palace. One of the trademarks and must do in Jodhpur is ascending on the back of an elephant.

Day 04: Ranakpur In the morning, you can go sightseeing, visiting the Meharangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and the various Bazars there. In the afternoon do visit ‘Mandore’, the old capital of this place. Start off for Ranakpur by afternoon, so as to reach comfortably by dinner time.

Day 07: Jaipur (Departure) After offering prayers taken at Pushkar, leave for Jaipur after breakfast. And once there, catch a train or flight back home.

Day 05: Udaipur In the morning leave from Ranakpur and arrive at Udaipur. After refreshing, leave for sightseeing. The must visits in Udaipur are Jagadish Temple, City Palace, Pratap Samrak and Sahelion Ki Bari. Do visit the Bazars of Udaipur, which are very famous for its wood carving. Day 06: Pushkar On the morning of 6th day, leave for Pushkar. This religious place will enchant and encapsulate you. This land, considered scared by many, is adorned by temples at every turn. In a rarity, there is a temple of ‘Brahma-The Creator of the world’. Perform and offer your religious prayers at the shrines here.

International: Bangkok (Four Day trip)

I

nternational trips can sometimes be expensive if not planned properly. Hence plan a budget out and decide how much per night you want to spend on a hotel room in Thailand and then ask for hotel recommendations in that price range. You can have your travel agency book the hotel for you or do it yourself. Choose a hotel not far from the Sky train. The Sky train is an overhead rail service. You can reach many places in Bangkok by cheap rail. Even go to the airport too. But meter taxis are cheap providing you ‘DO NOT’ bargain the cost of the ride. Meter is cheap so carry small bills and coins for paying the driver. Here are a few tips on what to expect there and also how to plan your trip:Day 1: Bangkok – Pattaya After landing at Bangkok, Pattaya is just a two and a half hour drive. It is breathtakingly beautiful beach destination. It is here that you can hit the bars, bask on the beaches, shop till you drop, pamper yourself with a massage and relish mouth-watering Thai cuisine. And what can one say about the nightlife in Pattaya? To put it simply, it is simply one of the most happening in the world. You can spend the evening at leisure. Though we recommend you see the Alcazar show, a world-famous cabaret that can give the Lido and Moulin Rouge a run for their money. Featuring a grand theatre with 1,200 seats and a state-of-the-art light and sound system, the Alcazar offers a unique blend of acting, stage design, costumes and glamour. Day 02: Coral Island Tour in Pattaya Next morning, speedboat your way to the idyllic Coral Island (Kohlan) through the sparkling aqua-blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Spend the day under the warm tropical sun - relax, swim, snorkel or just laze around on the island’s immaculate golden beaches. You can also dive down into the waters to witness the marine life up and close.

Day 03: Visit Temples in Bangkok Embark on a pleasant journey back to

10

MAY 2014 CITY LIFESTYLE

Bangkok - the city of temples, spas, endless shopping sprees and a vivid nightlife. Bangkok’s most distinguished Buddhist temples are locally known as WATS. Visit Wat Traimit, temple of the Golden Buddha (which is home to a 5.5 ton statue of the holy Buddha made from solid gold and is a fine example of Sukhothai art). Next stop comes at Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha, that is home to the largest and the oldest shrine of its kind in Bangkok. Day 04: Sightseeing in Bangkok A must see is the Safari World, Thailand’s popular open zoo. It is divided into four distinct sections (Safari Park, Bird Park, Games Corner and Macaw Island). The Safari World Park is the place to be, to see dolphins, orangutans, seals and a myriad of other exotic animals and birds amidst a picturesque African setting. There are several Indian and local restaurants to enjoy a sumptuous dinner at. Day 5: Departure

First Camera Crash Course Lesson 1: Aperture explained The two main elements you use to take an exposure are aperture and shutter speed. The aperture of a lens ranges from wide to narrow, and is measured in f/stops, such as f/4 (wide aperture) to f/22 (narrow aperture). The wider the aperture, the more light is let in to reach your DSLR’s sensor – brightening your shots. The narrower the aperture, the less light is let in – darkening your shots. Shutter speed, on the other hand, dictates the how long your DSLR’s shutter stays open for, and so also controls how much light reaches the sensor. Aperture and shutter speed act in unison to determine your exposure, so a wide f/4 aperture and fast 1/500 sec shutter speed lets in the same amount of light as a narrow f/16 aperture and slow 1/30 sec shutter speed, giving an identical exposure. However, you may still end up with two very different shots…

D

W

e’ll start off this photographic crash course by explaining – in simple terms – how exposure works, so you can capture perfectly exposed shots every time with your first camera. We’ll show you the importance of choosing the best aperture and depth of field for different subjects. We’ll also reveal all you need to know about shutter speed, for freezing subjects or capturing a sense of movement in your scene. And we’ll pass on expert advice for getting the best possible results with your first camera when the light is getting low. Then we build up to focusing, to help you get sharp shots whatever you’re shooting, and how to avoid common autofocus pitfalls. We’ll round things off with a photo composition master class, explaining the best ways to approach and compose your shots.

Education

Final tip Use Aperture Priority mode to control your apertures. In this semi-auto mode, your DSLR will then set the shutter speed for a standard exposure.

Wide aperture When taking portraits, always make sure you focus on the eyes to draw people into the shot. A mid-range focal length of 55mm decreases the angle of view, as well as helping to further decrease depth of field (see top right). Using a wide aperture of f/3.5 ensures your subject is sharp but the background is blurred, helping them stand out. Narrow aperture A wide-angle focal length of 18mm increases the angle of view and also increases DoF. A narrow aperture of f/16 has made sure the scene is sharp, from the rocks in the foreground to skyscrapers in the background. Use leading lines to draw the eye into your photos.

12

MAY 2014 CITY LIFESTYLE

2. What is depth of field? When you change your lens’s aperture setting, you affect depth of field (DoF). The depth of field refers to the amount of your scene that’s acceptably sharp. Using a wide aperture (such as f/5.6) will result in a ‘shallow’ depth of field. This is why wide apertures are ideal for shooting portraits and wildlife, as you can blur the backgrounds behind your subjects to really make them stand out in the scene. Using a narrow aperture (such as f/16) results in a greater depth of field. This is why narrow apertures are perfect when shooting landscapes and cityscapes, as you want to ensure your scene is acceptably sharp from the foreground through to the background area.

Education

Striking the right Pose Your pose defines your stature

W

e all have ways of coping with a photo being taken. Sometimes that means making a surprised face, other times it means we pretend to look like we’re having more fun than we really are. In reality, you probably just need to relax and stop thinking so much about it. You’re pretending to be something you’re not: If you’re a goofy person, posing in a weird way is going to work great, but if you’re quiet and reserved, you look unnatural acting goofy. To put it simply: act normal. You hate having your picture taken and it shows: Here’s the deal: a lot people aren’t photogenic and most people don’t like having a camera shoved in their face. You’re not alone in this. When you hate having your picture taken, you slouch; make a stupid face, and when someone puts a shoulder around you it looks like its weighing you down. The solution? Stand up straight and think about the last good meal you ate. You’re not going to get a trophy for best smile, but at least you won’t look like you’re pain. You’re squaring up to the camera: When someone points something at you it’s a natural human reaction to look directly at it, but stop doing it. Look above the camera or below, but don’t look directly at the camera. The same goes for the tilt of your head. A recent study found that men who tilt their head back slightly and woman who tilt their head forward are more attractive. The same goes for your feet and body, if they’re angled directly at the camera, shift them (and your body) slightly. Don’t worry about modeling techniques involving foot position and shoulder tilt. Just make sure you’re not squared up to the camera. You’re nervous and you try to leave after a single picture: The biggest hurdle for those of us who hate having our picture taken is the nerves. We tense up thinking about all those awkward high school portraits and we end up making the stupidest face imaginable. There’s nothing you can really do to combat nerves, but a simple trick is to stop making a run for the exit right after the picture is taken. Instead of scattering after the shutter is released, idle a bit and let the photographer capture a more candid photo after the “real” one was taken. You’re mugging people (or being mugged): Stop forcing yourself on other people in pictures. Prepare Yourself before Pictures by Learning Your Face One of the reasons we get nervous having our pictures taken is probably due to the fact we’re imagining this image being stored in a family photo album and we want to present our best side. Instead of fretting about your hair or how much you’re smiling, prepare yourself ahead of time by getting to know your face a little better. Learn to smile naturally: Practice makes you perfect here and getting to know your natural smile is the best way to keep yourself from looking awkward in a photo. Yes, it’s selfindulgent, but if you practice in front of the mirror you’ll eventually be able to conjure up a natural smile at any moment. Figure out which side you want to present: Most of us aren’t perfectly symmetrical and even if we are, our haircuts probably aren’t. When you’re staring at yourself in the mirror working on your smile, figure out which side and angle you like the best and present that whenever you can.

Summer time fun and how!

W

ith the annual examinations concluding recently, schools in the city have gone into their summer vacations. During their vacations, several kids spend their time frivolously, indulging in various activities like playing games to watching movies to pass their time. Though several schools run summer camps in order to allow the student to build their skills in other fields like sports or art, there are not many takers. So, here are a few tips to help you have a lot more fun in the sun during summer vacation:

10 steps for Summer Camp 01 Clean your room

04 Make a scrapbook of the summer

Throw/put away or destroy (rip) anything you don’t need this season like your homework’s, books, donewith refills to state a few. Clear out your clutter for a fresh, clean start this summer.

Buy several disposable cameras in the beginning of summer and carry them around with you. When you go out with your friends, take a few snapshots. Buy some cheap stickers, glue sticks and glitter and have fun.

02 Go camping You’ve worked all through the past few months preparing for your exams staying indoors. It’s time for you to step out and get on your bike and go for a nice, long ride now. Ask a few friends to tag along if need be. Stroll around a lake near your place. Try swimming in the evening. Go jogging or even just for a walk in the park or on the side walk. Walk your dog if you have one.

05 Stay indoors once in a while and be alone Take a nice bath, put on some pajamas, and curl up on the couch with a great book and a snack. Rent a movie or two and spend some time with yourself.

06 Invite some friends over and have an overnighter

Grab your favorite drinks, snacks, movies, video games, magazines, and books to have a night full of fun.

08 Visit places You don’t have to go anywhere exotic, just visit somewhere in your country, state, or even in your town. Go on a road trip with your family, or go with a few friends to a local place you’ve never been to before.

09 Grow a small garden You can grow small plants in flower pots or grow a small vegetable or fruit garden.

10 Get a part time Job Try and get a part-time job in a local supermarket, library or ask your dad to help you out with one. Aim to learn the craft of interacting with people.

03 Get outside Gather some friends and go set up a tent somewhere. A yard, open field (if you’re allowed), or a camp site are great places to set up camp. Make sure you have the necessary equipment so you’re not stranded in the rain wearing shorts and sandals with nothing to do. Camping and swimming. What’s not to love?

07 Get membership at your local library Spend some time there reading books that you like and are interested in. Novels, magazines, encyclopedias, non-fiction books, etc. and lot more are all there for you to read for free. Lots of libraries also have summer reading clubs, so consider joining one of those if you enjoy reading.

Have Printed dictionaries gone obsolete? -G. Sunder Raj

Choleric, Extol, Sibylline? Confused? Your first instinct would be to fetch a nearby dictionary to unearth the meaning of this word. In this era of internet and smart phones, many prefer these over printed dictionaries. The dictionary apps on smart phones or online version of it are user friendly and easily accessible, making it alluring. This leads to the question; have printed dictionaries gone obsolete? Bhuvana Immaculate, an English professor in a city college says, “Internet and mobile apps have taken over the way students refer to dictionaries. Though teaching how to use a dictionary is part of the curriculum, we end up allowing them to use online dictionaries”. She feels its better that they use a dictionary than none at all. Printed dictionary is one of the best ways to learn new words and its meanings. She adds, “With online dictionaries we end up looking only for words we are aiming at and don’t bother to learn anything new. Additionally, printed dictionaries

14

MAY 2014 CITY LIFESTYLE

help how to use words in different phrases and idioms or stresses on certain words in a sentence”. Uttara, an architect by profession feels, “We’ve all sort of conditioned ourselves into being apathetic to these things. It’s quite involuntary. It happens that the phones are right there should I need to look up a word. This is sad because I still read printed books.” She hopes unlike ‘Britannica’ this doesn’t go out off publication. Seconding this opinion, Rahim Chagani, a student says, “I always turn to these apps if I come across any difficult word. It is handy for me as the dictionary is there in my phone. As a result I don’t have to carry a fat printed dictionary along.” “In today’s world of instant food and messaging, the sanctity of grammar, spelling and right words is completely lost. No one refers to the dictionary anymore. Many homes and offices are not equipped with one. Gone are the days when people would go to the depths of every word”, feels Gopala Krishna, an

interior designer in the city. The sales of printed dictionaries though haven’t exactly dropped dramatically. A leading book stores manager in the city points out, “Purchase of printed dictionaries continues to be good. Students, professionals and even elders buy dictionaries even now. Readers, who are not so tech-friendly, still prefer printed dictionaries to deduce words they don’t understand”.

JACKETS are Mens New Best Friend

Jackets according to your body types If your boy shaped: Don’t shy away from decorative details like shimmer and zippers-you can really pull them off. They help add curves and are especially great on fitted silhouettes like these. Go for a classic cropped jacket with fun details. This bright collarless number can break up any 20 yearold straight-up-and-down figure to fake a waist. (UK Style by French Connection (sizes XS-XL) If you’re petite: Go for a sporty but fitted baseball jacket-you can’t go wrong with color blocking. We love how this looks a bit oversize but doest drown the body. If your plus-size: Go for a drapey-shaped jacket-if it’s not too long. Though one might get apprehensive and dubious about the lose shape of the jacket, once you adorn it you’ll how great it feels. A slightly curved bottom can work wonders. It makes your waist look narrower but still provides tummy coverage. Easy trick, fabulous results (This works for anyone whose apple shaped too)

summer The style Lady Like is characterized by elegant productions, romantic, very feminine and with a vintage air. Focusing in the ‘50s, the biggest icons of the trend are actresses. Currently, famous actresses are represent very well the trend that is composed of cinched waists, full skirts (flared or flared shift) and pencil skirt. There is no summer without stripes and that’s a fact! But this time, the navy will not reign absolute. Colorful stripes, thin, thick, disjointed and mixed will be a strong trend for spring / summer 2014. For some time they marked presence on the international catwalks and were unanimous in looks parades ‘summer’ 2013. Use the most classic stripes in more formal events or office and invest in different versions for parties and casual situations. The trend continues sports super high! Varsity jacket, pants with cuffs at the bar, legging. And two new options promise to come to power: the maxi t-shirt, which can be used as a dress, and neoprene, which is a thick fabric and rubberized, curved outlines and disguises some fats (this is a great tip for chubby girls!). The neoprene may seem strange at first, because it always belonged in the world of water sports, but it is a modern and alternative that injects freshness. To balance the look, use parts with sports supplements and female.

Bag it, in style M

ost of us can’t live without a bag to tote everything we need for the day or night. But just because it’s all about function it doesn’t have to be boring, so don’t feel obligated to buy only the basics. Neutral colours like this carry all. We give you a few tips on what you can do with them Look for versatility Don’t have time, energy or resources to switch your bag with every outfit? Black and brown go with everything. That said, so does metallic’s, skins, shades of white. Bright bags add life to toned-down looks Wearing jeans and a tee or a classic dark suit? A carryall in bright orange, red or pink is an instant pick-me-up. If you’re toting a ton, carry a bigger bag A piece that’s overstuffed looks sloppy. Doubling up is fine, but don’t weigh yourself down. If you have extra items to carry, fill up a large bag to carry along with your regular purse. Better yet, stash your smaller bag in it.

Get a bag relative to your size Petite? Don’t carry something you can fit it; instead chose something between medium and small. Tall and broad? A wee bag will out of proportion. Try one large or oversize. Buy a new one We can all get attached to old favorites, but recognize when its time to buy the new one to keep looking of the moment. Holes, frayed stitching, tears and worn leather mean your bag needs to be retired. Big Toys For Big Boys

HYDERABAD: In an age when several people swaps jobs at the drop of a hat and several others find it hard to acquire a job; there are those like Vinod Satwani (52), who turns their passion into a profession. Satwani’s store ‘Jack’s Hobbies’ specializes in toys. They deal with not just any toys, as they are today the pioneer dealers for a complete range of electric radio-controlled toys. These toys range from flying model aircrafts, helicopters and trains among other. At the start “When we began, there were not many stores available to cater to this kind of a hobby”, says

Satwani. These remote controlled (RC) toys run on either fuel or batteries. He feels that since the awareness was low in India in regards to this sport, those interested would go abroad and buy these products. The interest to see flying objects is something that’s synonymous with all age groups. “Everybody is passionate about aircrafts but is deterred by the unavailability of these toys. In order to cater to this demand and fuel my passion too, I started Jack’s Hobbies”, quips Satwani. Today, he continues to pursue his passion while also making a business out of it.

These aircrafts fly at a height of 1000ft. and at a speed of 6074kmph.The other major question that’s asked frequently is how far does the plane travel, for which Satwani assures it will travel for a minimum of one mile. The remote control can control the plane up to one mile. “What I cannot see I cannot fly. So you fly within your visual range. The major concern though is the availability of land or more so to say the lack off as the minimum space required to fly this is that of a cricket stadium. Hence, the enthusiasts travel for about 14-15 kms away from the city and indulge in this hobby”, concludes satwani.

Marketing or lack of thus It’s been 6-7 years now since this store was setup. Satwani is ecstatic with the response the store has received in this interim period. “We have a niche market. A page in a social networking site and a website are all we use to promote our products. We do not believe in advertising it. Only those who are passionate will buy these products”, says Satwani. His store has generated sufficient advertising through word of mouth. It requires a certain skill “Even if someone buys these products from abroad, it would fly well there but the moment they get It here and try it would crash”, says Satwani on the importance of having the passion and skill to fly these RC modeled aircrafts. Satwani describes his toy business as one that has more niche items and foregoes toys that can be found in large retail outlets. The concept of hobby stores is not yet heard of in India yet. Hence, a certain level of novelty is added to the store. Today, apart from selling the product Satwani also teaches his costumers how the aircrafts are flown. He says, “If you have money you can these toys, but only those who are passionate can fly these properly without crashing. Buying it is one thing but flying it is altogether another story.” How high do they fly?

n a country where male protagonists are worshipped as demi-gods and temples are built for lead actresses, there are several people whose contributions go completely unnoticed. One of the primary case in point is the antagonists. In the 100 year old history of the film industry there have been several antagonists, who have immortalized the characters they have played, etching a permanent place in the audience’s memory. For instance, who can ever forget Gabbar Singh delivering his famous ‘kitne aadmi the’ line in Sholay. The recognition that the antagonist deserve is nothing in comparison to that of what the lead protagonist gets. Yet, Charandeep Surneni is one such actor who continues to make huge strides in the industry as an antagonist and character artist. Having starred in various films like ‘Kalyanram’s Kathi’ and ‘Darling’ as a villain, Charan feels, “An actor is an actor, immaterial of whether he/she is playing the negative character/positive character or the lead role/ character role. I don’t want to be confind to a particular mould though. Doing the same roles even twice might put you in the risk of getting bracketed. I think an actor should do try playing every role”. Today, almost all those having aspirations to be in the film industry want to become heroes. Commenting on this never changing trend he adds, “I’m not of that kind. I want to do negative roles. I don’t mind being a character artist as well. At all costs though, I want to avoid getting stereotyped. Otherwise, the directors will begin envisioning only those types of characters for me, resulting in me playing similar roles time and again”. On prodding him to open up about his struggles in the initial days of his career, he says, “To be honest, I wasn’t so serious about acting. Back in the days, after watching a movie I would think ‘Oh! This is so easy’. Only after I got into the field did I know how difficult the actors work. Immaterial of whether the film turn into a hit or a flop, the hard work, hours of labor and huge financing put into it cannot be disregarded.” Talking about the rigors an actor should put in he quips, “It is a lot of hard work. He has to maintain his physique and keep a check on his diet as long as he wishes to be an actor. While this is one side, for a person like me who has no background and is a stark outsider, getting offers is a huge challenge. I ended up being part of two or three small budget movies initially.” Realizing that thing weren’t going as planned; Charan went into a sabbatical for a period of two years. In the interim period, he re-planed his career. He states, “I prepared myself. A few of my seniors in the industry, who are also my good friends, suggested that I take acting classes in order to become a better actor. I worked out in the gym. I took dance classes. As I wanted to become a strong villain I also learnt martial arts.” Charan recently worked in the Tamil blockbuster, ‘Jilla’, alongside Superstars Vijay and Mohanlal. Speaking about his interactions with Vijay he remarks, “He is an amazing person. Extremely down to earth. I was very new to the Tamil industry and truthfully before working with him I dint know what he was in Chennai. I hadn’t even seen his movies. I had only seen ‘Thupaki’ (one of Vijay’s 2013 hit films). When I interacted with him on the sets, he was patient and answered a lot many queries. Throughout the shoot he would constantly encourage me, be it telling me I had nice eyes or that I had good expressions. Coming from a star like him that your

screen presence is good is a big boost. He also suggested since there are no good villains or character artist in south India I should work harder and try and fill that void. The feeling that accompanied this conversation was a strong motivation to achieve.” Over the years there has been a dearth of antagonists who have muscular bodies or perfect abs. The main protagonists continue to edge out the villains even in this front, what with almost everyone maintaining perfect six pack abs. Sating that the villains should start working out more often, he explains, “Only if one elevates the villains character can character of the heroes be elevated from the audiences point of view. If the villain is portrayed as being strong only then can the hero ne projected stronger than him. This is one of the primary reasons for me to dedicate my whole time in becoming a villain and develop a six pack abs.” He took exactly 1 year of round the clock (morning and evening) workouts and perfect diet control to achieve the perfect abs. He also credits his trainer Venkat for the same. Currently Charan is working on ‘Bahubali’, ‘Magadeheera’ Director Rajamouli’s dream magnum opus starring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. The project to be tentatively released in 2015 in two parts has Charan playing one of the antagonists. “To be brutally honest, I dint know what character I was playing or what’s the length of my role. It was my dream to work with Rajamouli sir and Prabhas. I have been a huge fan of Prabhas since he debuted in ‘Eeshwar’. I trained for one month last April and was then informed that my character was finalized,” says a beaming Charan on being a part of Bahubali. Talking about Rajamouli, he say’s excitedly, “He is a legend in Tollywood. Sir has taught me a lot regarding acting. To tell you the truth, Rajamouli sir is not just a director but also a good actor, fight master, dance master and also delivers dialogues. He can do anything and is a perfect all rounder. I realized he is called the number one director for a reason”. The future looks sunny for this dashing young man. He has three films all set to release. While one is in Tamil, the other two are in Telugu with one being Billa Ranga and another untitled project. It has been produced by ‘Varahi Chalanichitram’. Charan’s latest venture, Billa Ranga is up for release in the last week of April. For this film he has doubled up as both an actor as well as the executive producer. He adds, “Though I initially joined this project as an actor, I was asked to take care of the execution also. This has been an enriching experience so far.” Talking about the film he says, “It’s an out an out comedy. The main character is played by Satyanand garu. He is a well known acting coach, tutoring big stars like Mahesh Babu, Prabhas and Pawan Kalyan among others. He has introduced over 70 heroes to the south Indian film industry. This is the first time he is coming onto the screen through Billa Ranga. That is one of the major USP’s of this film. Supporting him are two characters: Billa and Ranga. I’m playing this character called baby. With my kind of physical attributes, being named ‘baby’ is in itself hilarious. I’m sure you understand what kind of a comedy we are talking about. It’s going to be a laugh riot”. Post Jilla though, the Tamil industry has been more welcoming than the Telugu industry. He continues to get casted in several big films, the question to be answered is, are Tollywood directors watching??? MAY 2014 CITY LIFESTYLE

People are not aspiring to build dream houses anymore: ARCHITECT SRINIVAS

Architect Srinivas Girgila is considered one of the best young architects in twin cities today. He has been in the field for over 8 year. He started his own firm, ‘Insight Architects’, five years ago. G.Sunder Raj caught up with the architect for a tete-a-tete.

Excerpts from the interview: Currently the city is growing big and the space is reducing. As an architect how much of a challenge is it? Well, small space is not a criterion usually for architects. It depends most often firstly on the client’s requirement. The present day’s trend is mostly relegated to depending on artificial ventilation as natural ventilation requires more space. Almost everyone prefers an artificially modified air conditioned room. As a result of this we miss out on the outside spaces. In the case of city, the land values are different from the architectural designs. Today, the majority prefer community living when compared to independent houses. Reasons could be an aplenty, from security concerns to maintenance issues. The advantage with community living is that it has more open spaces, thus transcending into more greener spaces. Putting all these together is defiantly challenging. GO means the open spaces. Because of the land value being so high, the clients feel that utilizing the available less space to the fullest is the main criteria. And even in that small space if he client wishes to have landscaping he can terrace gardens. Terrace gardens though are possible only if we have a free hand from the clients. Nowadays clients are also involving extensively in designing. Everyone is able to become a designer.

provide adequate sunlight while on the contrary increase the load of air conditioning. The concept is simple; along with light comes a lot of heat. Hence, it’s important to understand the orientation and the correct usage will work on a house. We should try and improve the green cover and avoid copying every design that is available. Environmentally sustainable design should become the new mantra in my opinion. What are your favorite style/ designs? I like the designs at Auroville, Pondicherry. Both I and my wife prefer tropical designs with a contemporary style. I prefer straight lines style and use vernacularly available & natural materials. Be it stones or textures, they are the best. Minimal is the new maximum and so I also prefer white washed walls. These are my most preferred styles.

own. Aesthetically the meaning has changed. Elevation has become second skin and the present day designers ignore the elevation to a large extent. Why is the concept of building a ‘dream house’ fading away? It’s because of a certain kind of mentality that has crept in over the last few decades. Nobody is spending sufficient time on anything anymore. They want everything to happen at a fast pace. It’s like this; by the time

For example, glass is a green material. If you use more glass, it will provide more sunlight. The same glass used, say during the summer, will definitely

highlighters, allowing the architect to choose from the great variety available to use for interiors, be it cupboards, ceiling, doors or wardrobes. The architects thus have warmed up to these products, exploring and using them in their concepts. Today, they understand and have more ideas on how to use highlighters. In the first floor we display kitchen accessories. We are the main distributors for companies like ‘Haifley and Blum’ and ‘Hettich Kitchen’. Being the sole agents in India for over 12 brands, we directly import these exclusive products from Italy and Germany. Over 20,000 varieties of handles are put up on live display. These are not available anywhere else in the country. In the second floor is for the bathroom accessories. We deal with all exclusive brands and have live displays of brands like Kohler, Wilron and Dannoon and Danone among others. We also have shower cubicles. In the top floor we have all imported tiles and specifically make it a point not to deal with Indian tiles. They are imported from Spain, Germany, China and Malaysia. Why people chose stellar? Well, because we try to maintain quality and do something different very often. Our urge

to stay always ahead of the market and give something new every time a customer visits, is reason to come to ‘Stellar’. The pricing also is very reasonable and affordable for the pockets. Our clientele includes over 120 Tollywood film personalities, politicians and most of the big bungalows in the city. The chief Ministers camp office and his residence are also part of our list of customers. We always see that the customer gets what he pays for. So we maintain quality at all given points in time. What next for stellar? We are planning to start a branch in Vijayawada. We are trying to identify were the capital is so that we can open at the right place. We are very particular about not opening branches in Hyderabad. People are able to go to China or Italy and buy furniture as they feel it’s important. I have heard so many people tell me to have a branch in Kukatpally, Dilshukhnagar or A.S Rao Nagar. But I feel our business doesn’t need a branch. It’s just a half hour journey from any part of the city today.

Transformers 4 : Not for KIDS With June getting closer and closer, the anticipation seems to be growing to a fever pitch around Transformers: Age of Extinction, the next installment in the epic series. Choosing to not do a total reboot seems to be working in their favor since we don’t have to rethink the world-set or wonder how they will re-envision the classic toy/cartoon franchise. Titus Welliver playing a character named only SAVOY in the movie has stated that this Transformers movie is ‘DARKER’ and will ‘not be a kids movie’!. This isn’t anything new as the first movie included a government agency who tracked the Autobots down assuming them to be an alien threat. This feeling continued throughout the series. So, that, at least, continues into the latest installment. “It’s a bit more of a darker vision of the ‘Transformers’ world... It’s not a kids’ movie, I’ll tell you that much.” Most of the excitement has built around the arrival of Grimlock and possible other Dinobots.

Mahendra Chakravarti, the writer for this film, is my student. They wanted a fresh face for this particular character. Mahendra recommended my name. ARAVIND VANNELA, Producer Working on this team was very good. The team be it the direction department or the production department was very supportive during the entire shoot. So I decided to produce this movie. As this movie is a comic-caper. This is a message oriented political satire. Satyanand Garu has done a main role in this. He is the guru for all the big superstars in Tollywood. After teaching 64 actors who have graced the big screen today, He has chosen our film to come on the big screen. It’s a big privilege for us. She said having seen women cabs operational in various cities and states like Kerala, Delhi, and Mumbai why not in Hyderabad.” Initially she approached State of India for the loan to purchase vehicles to start She cabs but the bankers made fun out of it and rejected the proposal later she approached Central Bank where she faced the same situation however with loosing confidence she mortgaged her gold ornaments with the bank and purchased Maruthi Shift. We launched She cabs with one vehicle last month on 19th February and we

First Women Driven C abs feel proud that on the launching day itself we got first order for our She cabs. Our APBHS President Vijaya Reddy her self came forward to become driver for the She cabs, she never hesitated to take-up the job in spite of lot of negative talk came from various sections of society however Vijaya Reddy’s husband was proud enough to support her in the work. She said the violence against women has been and continues to be so widespread across all classes in our country, so we are meeting with two objectives one hand we were able to ensure livelihood with dignity to women who become drivers and other hand to offer safe mobility for female passengers. Anuradha Rao further said we have also decided to keep dress code for the cab drivers for which every cab driver will wear blue jeans, white shirt or Churidhar with blue pyjama white Kurta. Currently we are running the business with two cabs and coming two months we want to add another three cabs initially however the newly launched Mahila Bank is coming forward to provide loans to purchase cabs and very soon we hope that with the help of Mahila Bank we are able to increase more cabs in city and also expand surrounding areas. Presently our cabs are running at the radius of 60 to 70 KM in the city and outskirts. Whenever our cab is busy during the midnight we are intimating the concerned Police station so that their patrolling vans are ready to assist our customers and also women drivers however till now we have not faced such a problem but we are thank full to the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police for supporting us. She also said we are charging beginning with Rs.350 and for every KM Rs.20 compare to others we are charging Rs.50 more because our lady cab driver cannot go to have tea as men drivers and there are lot of issues because of that we are charging little bit higher. We are not training 15 girls as a cab drivers and very soon there would inducted into She cabs. On the expansion Plans, she said very soon we are going to expand to the cities like Vizag and Vijayawada initially and

later we are planning to expand to other cities in the state and also Bengaluru. Commenting her personal life, she said her husband Achuta Rao, Member of Child Commission, Government of Andhra Pradesh is always supported her to take up various issues pertaining to women and child, especially girl child. From last four years she has taken more than 400 cases in the city and other parts of the state. She says my background is advertising, but being a businesswoman gives me the thrill and challenge of learning something new and breaking new ground within my self. Vijaya Reddy, the first cab driver says the world is full of jokes about women drivers, there’s such a bias against women drivers when I first told people about my Idea, the response was first teach them how to park a car, people were sarcastic. She also said success is really the kind of transformation the women we work with are able to achieve; the women who are today working with us as drivers can say that none will accept violence from men in their lives anymore.

Revolutionizing the market The fashion industry in the city was introduced to handloom (a natural fabric), by him. He worked directly with the handloom weavers in Andhra and through his efforts; plenty of villages generated employment for handloom work and brought more than 100 villages into Fashion Map of India. He used his knowledge of hand woven and handloom salwar suits designs into blouse fabrics, revolutionizing the fashion industry. He sold these to over 3000 outlets across

India, which also brought down the sales of 2x2 materials considerably today On Multi-national Companies The entry of MNC into the retail market will improve competition among the people and there will be more to learn from them. He feels that there is a wrong notion among the people that the eminent entry of MNC’S would affect the people. He feels anybody is welcome to come to India. Looking towards a bright future There are a lot of reasons to smile today. What started as a simple shop is now a thriving business with plenty of outlets and countless loyal customers. Now, sensing the potential for the India’s ethnic wear collections in various foreign countries, he is planning to expand the retails outlets by 2015, while also setting up a franchise model in the country.

Why You Should have Sex: 10 Health Reasons to Have Sex

Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #1 Helps calm you down: Sex helps reduce stress. The process of arousal and orgasm lets loose an elixir of natural painkillers and relaxers. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #2 It improves your blood pressure: Oxytocin is released in response to hugs, kisses, caresses and sometimes a simple touch. This in turn lowers blood pressure (diastolic blood pressure) and heart rate. The effect causes cardiovascular reactivity, the response of the cardiovascular system to stress. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #3 Boost your immunity: Did you know that indulging in sex increases the release of Immunoglobulin A, an antigen that fights flu and colds. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #4 Weight loss: You can burn anywhere between 500-700 calories if you indulge in sex regularly. In an article published in the American Journal of Exercise Calorimetry in August 2006, Dr. Wieder confirms that sex helps to burn calories.

Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #5 A sturdy healthy heart: Once you burn calories and improve your blood pressure, having sex regularly will strengthen your heart and prevent heart attacks and strokes. A study by New England Research Institute concluded that men who indulge in sex regularly are 45 percent less likely to experience cardiovascular diseases. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #6 Look and feel younger: Studies have revealed that regular ‘loving’ can help you look younger. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #7 Healthy semen: If you’re trying to conceive, you increase the volume of semen if you have sex regularly. Regular sex replaces old sperms from the testicles. If there is a natural build-up of sperms it can lead to DNA damage. Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #8 Sex lowers the risk of cancer: Sex reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men. In an Australian study men who ejaculated 21 times a month were least likely to develop cancer.

Did you know that having sex not only satisfies you and your partner sexually but is also good for your health and body? Having sex on a regular basis will ensure you have a healthy heart, mind and a stress-free life.

In a study mentioned in the Daily Mirror, “vigorous sex pumps higher levels of oxygen around the body, increasing the flow of blood and nutrients to the skin and pushes newer, fresher skin cells to the surface, making your skin look healthier.” Healthy Reasons to Have Sex #10 Stronger pelvic muscles: Sex involves the use of several muscles. Regular sexual intercourse can help you develop stronger pelvic muscles. Through regular sex, you can also maintain a strong bladder and bowel function.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe in the summer - Top Ten Summer Dangers for Dogs

S

ummer is a terrific time to be a dog owner. It lets you run, swim, and play with your dog in nicer weather than any other time of the year. However, summer also brings unique risks to your dog’s health that you should keep in mind throughout the season. These summer dangers include:

1. Heat Stroke Heat stroke occurs when your dog’s body temperature rises dangerously high. It is most common when dogs are left in a car for too long, or when they exercise in the heat. Never leave your dog in the car in hot weather, and always remember that a cracked window is not enough to cool a car. Your dog always needs access to shade outside. Muzzling interferes with a dog’s ability to cool itself by panting and should be avoided. 2. Sunburn Dogs can burn in the sun just like people can. White, light-colored, and thinly coated dogs have an increased risk of sunburn. Sunburn causes pain, itching, peeling, and other problems. To prevent sunburn, apply a waterproof sunscreen formulated for babies or pets. Be sure to cover the tips of your dog’s ears and nose, the skin around its mouth, and its back. 3. Burned Foot Pads Sidewalk, patio, street, sand. and other surfaces can burn your dog’s footpads. Walk your dog in the morning and at night when outdoor surfaces are coolest. Press your hand onto surfaces for 30 seconds to test them before allowing your dog to walk on them. If it is painful for you, it will be painful for your dog. 4. Dehydration Prevent dehydration by providing your

dog with unrestricted access to fresh and cool water both indoors and outside. Ice cubes and frozen chicken or beef broth encourage your dog to take in more fluids and help keep it cool. You can also feed your dog wet dog food during the summer to increase its fluid intake. 5. Campfires and Barbecues Your dog may try to take burning sticks from the fire, which is hard to retrieve since they think that you are playing when you chase them. Food that is stuck to barbecues after cooking can tempt your dog to lick the barbecue and burn its tongue or mouth. Lighter fluid is a poison and should not be left where your dog can reach it. Keep your dog away from barbecues and campfires unless it is on a very short leash. 6. Fireworks Some fireworks look like sticks, which makes your dog think that they are toys. The loud noises and sudden flash of fireworks can disorient and startle your dog, causing it to run wildly. If you cannot avoid being around fireworks, then keep your dog on a very short leash. 7. Parasites Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects are at their peak during the summer months. Talk to your veterinarian about appropriate protection such as collars, sprays, shampoos, dips, and other products. 8. Chemicals in the Water It is no secret that most dogs love to swim. Swimming can be fun for you and your dog and helps prevent heat stroke. However, chlorine can irritate a dog’s

skin and upset its stomach. Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming in a pool and do not let it drink more than a small amount of pool water. Standing water, such as puddles, can also be dangerous for dogs to drink due to the presence of antifreeze or other chemicals. Provide your dog with fresh water to drink whenever possible. 9. Seasonal Allergies Fleas, mold, flowers, and other potential allergens are common during summer. Allergies cause itching (and with it, excessive scratching), coughing, sneezing, discomfort, and other problems for your dog. Keep your dog away from allergy triggers when possible, especially if you know it has a particular allergy. Ask your veterinarian about whether your pet would benefit from a canine antihistamine or other medication. 10. Getting Lost Take care when traveling with your dog during the summer to prevent it from becoming lost in unfamiliar surroundings. Always have someone watching your dog if it is off its leash. A collar with a contact information tag should be considered the minimum safety precaution. Microchip your dog if you desire more reliable identification. These summer safety tips apply to dogs in general, but no one knows your dog better than you. If your dog is well behaved around food, for example, then it may be safer to let it be near a barbecue. Do not be afraid to let your dog off its leash to run and enjoy summer, but do be aware of what possible dangers may be nearby before you do so

Book Review GHaLIb DaNgER -bY NEERajPaNdEY

The director of critically-acclaimed films like ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Special 26’,NeerajPandey has recently launched his debut novel ‘Ghalib Danger’. The story of the novel revolves around the life of its protagonist Kamran Khan, a young taxi driver by profession. His life transforms when he saves a notorious don called Mirza from being killed. As an act of gratitude, Mirza takes Kamran under his wing. With time Kamran gets drawn into the mafia boss’ dangerous world of cops and rival gangsters, eventually taking over from him. Kamran also inherits Mirza’s philosophy that all of life’s problems can be solved through Ghalib’s poetry. Soon, the innocent taxi driver has cops, criminals and even cabinet ministers at his beck and call. And he has a new name — Ghalib Danger.

A TaLE FOR THE TIME BEINg -bY RUTH OZEKI A Tale for the Time Being is a touching story on how reading and writing connect two people who will never meet. Spanning the planet from Tokyo’s Electric Town to Desolation Sound, British Columbia, and connected by the great Pacific gyres, A Tale for the Time Being tells the story of a diary, washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox, and the profound effect it has on the person who discovers it. Open up this book and discover: an earthquakecausing catfish, a hundred-and-four-yearold Buddhist nun, French maid cafes in a manga-fied world, cyber bullying, natural disasters, Zen philosophy, the infinite possibilities of time, and an uplifting story of love, loss, and wisdom old and new.
