WEDDING

Indian Wedding Themes I

ndian weddings are all about colours, gorgeous clothing, fabulous decoration, delicious food and foot tapping music and dance. Every couple-to-be wishes to have a grand wedding; one that is unique and different from all the others. The new concept that is picking up in the market is ‘theme wedding’. A theme based wedding can make the entire experience memorable and special for the couple. The theme of the wedding reflects the personality and taste of the couple. Some of the popular Indian wedding themes include:

Village weddings It gives a very traditional touch to the wedding. The setting and decoration is rustic with lanterns, earthen pots, bullock carts and khatiya etc. Even the sitting arrangements, Mandap decoration, entrance, dressing style, entertainment are based on the theme. You can showcase the culture of your own place (South or North). The foods can be served on banana leaves (South) and the baraat may comprise of exotic animals like elephants etc. Royal Wedding Even if you are not born with a silver spoon, you can still have a Royal wedding. Get wedded in front of a replica of Taj Mahal or a palace with a grand garland ceremony. This theme will use a lot of floral decorations, flashy lightings, opulent feasts and a grand palace or fort as the venue. You can have folk dancers and musicians to perform at your wedding and delight your guests with traditional delicacies. Bollywood wedding Bollywood wedding is nothing but a grand wedding. It’s about all the gilts, glamour and glory. The bride is the heroine and the groom is her hero. The setting will bring in the memories of some Bollywood hit movies. This theme will have bold colours, extra dose of glamour, fashion, gaudy jewelled decoration,

exotic marriage halls, embellished chandeliers and more. Beach wedding Beach wedding theme is especially popular in cross-cultural weddings. In India, the best place to have a beach wedding is Goa. It’s famous for its endless sandy beaches. A beach wedding setting is unique and romantic. The place can be decorated with sea shells, flowers and ocean creatures, and a nearby Goan beach shack becomes the food and beverage counter for your catering needs. You can spruce up the ceremonies with local music bands, rain dance, flowers and coconut water. The beautiful sea and sunset will make every moment special for the couple and guests. Arabic wedding This wedding theme requires an elaborate décor. A desert ambience is created and cut outs from the Arabian Nights are used to give a feel of Arabia. The place will be decorated with candle lighting, embroidered magic carpet, mysterious lanterns and floor pillow space. A little bit of dessert scenery with an oasis in the middle can be created to complete the effect. The catering staff can be all dressed up like Arabs, and soft Arabic music playing in the background will add to the overall feel. The Middle Eastern savouries and sweet treats would complete the wedding celebrations.

WEDDING

Selecting Your

Wedding Card Wedding card is the first official announcement of your wedding, giving out the details of all the functions like sangeet, mehendi, phere etc. So your wedding card gives the first impression to your guests about your wedding.

S

electing a perfect wedding invite is a tricky process and to avoid the last minute rush, you need to work on selecting the wedding cards a few months in advance. For selecting styles and options, you can search online or visit your favorite shop. But, to finalize a wedding card you need to pay close attention to a few factors, here are a few tips to help you choose Indian wedding invitations:

Theme and style

Wedding Color

Material and size

Proofreading

These days, people prefer to have a stylish theme wedding. Wedding style and theme play an important role to narrow down your choices. Based on your wedding theme, modern, vintage, village, beach, royal etc. you can choose the color, look and design of your wedding invites. If you have a royal theme wedding then you might choose an invite with embossed design and motifs to suit the occasion.

Some people stick to the traditional colors like red, gold, saffron which reflects emotions i.e love, passion and energy that characterize the wedding. To make the work easier, you can choose your wedding color for your wedding card. If you can’t finalize the colors, you can always choose something that goes well with the design and layouts. Make sure the envelope you choose matches the color of the card.

The design of the wedding card actually depends on the material which is used for printing. If you wish to have a bi-fold or tri-fold design then it’s better to select a paper of medium weight. Never select a paper that’s too thin, especially if the invite is just of a single page. The size of the card matters a lot. A small wedding card with too much information is undesirable.

It’s better to have two- three sessions of proofreading before the final print. Finalize the content of the card well in advance. The wordings used in the wedding invitations must be appropriate and convey the important message for your marriage ceremony. Make sure the information like name, venue, contact details and date are printed properly so that the guest can read them without any difficulty.

TRAVEL & TOURISM

Places to visit S

ummer is knocking at the door, and we have a longlist of places to visit this season. So, those who enjoy a hot cup of coffee in bed everymorning or snuggle up with a novel in front of a fireplace in the evenings, remember it’s the best time to go on a holiday with your friends, family, or all by yourself. Here is a list of places in India you can get started with says Priyanka Ray.

Kerala This place is great for all seasons, but during winter the beauty is at its zenith. Kerala has a moderate temperature throughout the year, so if you want to escape the cold, it’s the best place to visit. God’s own country has everything to offer: backwaters, beaches, spice gardens, tea plantations, Ayurveda and wildlife. Some popular beaches in Kerala are Kovalam, Cherai and Varkala. You can also have backwater tourism and a stay in lake resorts around Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom and Alapuzha; hill stations and resorts at Munnar, Wayanad, Nelliampathi, Vagamon and Ponmudi. If you lovewildlife then a bird sanctuary in Kumarakom, tiger reserve in Periyarand Eravikulam National Park are good destinations.

Rajasthan The best time to visit the ‘Land of Maharajas’ is during winter. Rajasthan is a wonderful concoction of history, tradition, royalty, colours and culture. Every city here has so much to offer that it’s difficult for the tourist to choose. Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Ranthambore, Mount Abu, Ajmer, Pushkar and Bikaner are some of the popular tourist destinations. Forts, palaces, traditional folk dances and hospitality of Rajasthanmake it a magical experience for all its tourists.

Kashmir Skiing is one sport you can enjoy this season and Auli is the best place for it. Thisquietplace located in Himalayas is a great option for people who want to enjoy some fun activities like trekking and skiing. They also have a few spiritual places here. Auli has Asia’s longest cable car – the gondola and a few artificial lakes.

Watches

GADGETRY

JaquetDroz Grande Heure GMT

J

aquetDroz reinvents the luxury of time with a new classic: the Grande Heure GMT. This latest model, featuring perfect legibility for two time zones, flawlessly meets the demands of the modern and stylish globe trotter. It offers a simple, precise way to read the time in two time zones. The 24 indexes in Arabic numerals set around a Grand Feu enamel dial make it easy to see all the hours of the day in two cities. Never before has a watch presented such a clear, effortless indication of two time zones. This technological development is enhanced by the majestic hands in the form of a compass, a detail which hints at the navigational instruments used by sailors of another era. The red hand indicates local time while the blued steel hand shows the time at the destination. When the two hands come together in the same time zone they merge into a single, bicolor indication of the exact time. The watch has shown its commitment to simplicity and practicality in the Grande Heure GMT by choosing a time-setting system with a single crown.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master II

T

he Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II in 904L steel, with a rotatable bezel featuring for the first time a twocolour ceramic Cerachrom bezel insert in blue and black representing day and night. The engraved 24-hour graduations are coated with a thin layer of platinum via a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process. The GMT-Master II’s 40mm Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100m, is a paragon of robustness, proportion and elegance. The characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of particularly corrosion resistant 904L steel. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool exclusive to Rolex watchmakers. The winding crown, fitted with the patented Triplock triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. It is protected by a crown guard that forms an integral part of the middle case. The crystal, with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. Rolex Store: 9820567655

Manero Power Reserve W

ith integrated power reserve indication and the highprecision CFB A1011 Manufacture calibre, this timepiece combines high functionality and sophisticated technology. The power reserve indication is a classic design element with tradition. It indicates the current state of tension of the mainspring and states the remaining time the watch will continue to run, as a number of hours. On a round indication at 3 o’clock, a hand provides information about the remaining power reserve. As the power runs down, the hand moves into an area that is shaded red.

Also visible at a glance are the day of the week at 9 o’clock, the particularly large big date at 11 o’clock, and the integrated small seconds at 6 o’clock. The silver-colored dial is divided into an outer ring and an inner ring, which are differently colored. While all the functions are located in the light-colored inner circle, the darker outer circle is segmented by silver index marks. This varying visual aspect forms a pleasing transition to the stainless steel case, which has a diameter of 42.5mm and a depth of 12.54mm. The timepiece is beautifully complemented by a brown alligator-skin strap or stainless steel bracelet. Manero Store: +91 8146400826

Coming to actress, Trivikram picked up Samantha again after directing her in Pawan’s AD. Cine observers feel that working with dynamites like Bunny and Samantha will be surely a ‘safe game’ as the couple can carry any role, dialogue and emotion with ease, making Trivikram’s job simpler. Also, our director is keen to pick Devi Sri Prasad again, a tried and tested comrade for Bunny’s movies. With all these good points around, how would this film not become a safe bet to score hat trick for Trivikram? It will be a blockbuster for sure! WWW.CITYLIFESTYLEMAG.COM

Himesh loses 20 kg for his upcoming film

H

imesh Reshammiya will play an excop-turned-superstar in his next, ‘The Xpose’, which is a thriller set in 1960s’ Bollywood. The composer-singer-actor has shed 20 kilos to fit into the role of Ravi Kumar, which is inspired by the late actor Raaj Kumar. Along with shunning carbohydrates, he also stopped eating between 9 pm and 9 am. Himesh is pleased with the results and is working towards getting six-pack abs in a month. Says he, “I have some superb music coming this year with Humshakals, Action Jackson, All Is Well and Kick. A

lia Bhatt, who has lent her voice to a song in her upcoming film ‘Highway’, says if she fails as an actress, she will turn to singing. When director Imtiaz Ali asked her to croon a number in ‘Highway’, she jumped at the idea. “I am not a singer... I think I am a bathroom singer. When I was asked to sing I was excited and thought of trying it (singing) out. A R Rahman sir was very patient with me. If I fail as an actress, I will become a singer,” Alia told reporters. When the team of ‘Highway’ was travelling since it is a road movie, Alia would often sing Rahman’s song ‘Jiya Re Jiya’. That’s when Imtiaz thought of exploring her singing talent. Music maestro A R Rahman told her to practice and that if she learns singing for two years, she could have her album. According to Alia, who is geared up for the highway journey in a de-glam avatar with Randeep Hooda, both acting and singing are difficult. “When I was recording with Rahman sir, I messed up a few times but that is ok...it happens. I did not know anything about singing...I did not know how to sustain my breath, but later on I learnt with the help of Rahman sir,” Alia added.

Sanjay Gupta to make Hollywood film

S

anjay Gupta, who was already juggling two films, ‘Mumbai Saga’ and ‘Khotey Sikkey’, has to clear his schedule for a third. And the offer has come from LA. A Hollywood production house has approached Gupta to direct an official remake of a hit foreign language film. “It is a thriller like many of my previous films. But while the others were malecentric, this one has a woman protagonist and two important male characters. These guys approached me after seeing my body of work.” The film, to be co-produced by Sanjay, will be made in Hindi and English. While Sanjay admitted that he might approach John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan or Shahid Kapoor for the two male characters as it would be a welcome change for them too to not play the leading man, he was tight lipped about which actress he has in mind for the central role.

Growing cacti indoor I

f you feel you lack talent for plant care, then learn how to grow a cactus indoor. Cacti are easy to grow and to take care of. They need less of your attention and require minimal watering and nourishing, and ample light. Here are a few tricks and tips to grow thriving indoor cactus. Sandy soil and container An indoor cactus doesn’t grow much so planting one in a shallow container would be a good idea. Select a shallow pot or container (8-10 inches). Big pots will have excess soil and which can hold too much water and rot the cactus. An indoor cactus needs quick draining soil and re-potting every 3 -5 years. It’s advisable to use a mix of half potting soil and half sand.

Ample light

Cacti love bright lighting. They need 8-10 hours of bright light during their growing season (to encourage flowering). You can place a cactus near your window but make sure that the cactus doesn’t sunburn. If you feel the cactus is not getting

adequate sunlight then you can supplement with a natural white florescent bulb. You can occasionally put it outside in summer and spring.

Food and water

It’s important to water regularly during the growing season and sparingly during the cactus’ dormant season. Allow the soil to completely dry out between watering sessions and do not leave the cactus with excess water, as this leads to rot. Feed cactus an all-purpose houseplant food with nitrogen and phosphorus (dilute it to half the recommended amount before using). Know the type of the cactus, some are winter growers and some are summer growers. Find out the kind and water accordingly.

Fertilizer

Cactus needs low nitrogen fertilizer for its good growth. High-phosphorous fertilizer promotes flowering and healthy roots. But make sure that you don’t over use it.

Tips to remember • Always wear gardening gloves when working with the succulents. • Always put your cactus in the sunniest spot in your home.

The DLF Group was founded in 1946. We developed some of the first residential colonies in Delhi such as Krishna Nagar in East Delhi, which was completed in 1949. Since then we have been responsible for the development of many of Delhi’s other well known urban colonies, including South Extension, Greater Kailash, Kailash Colony and Hauz Khas. Following the passage of the Delhi Development Act in 1957, the state assumed control of real estate development activities in Delhi, which resulted in restrictions on private real estate colony development. We therefore commenced acquiring land at relatively low cost outside the area controlled by the Delhi Development Authority, particularly in the district of Gurgaon in the adjacent state of Haryana. This led to our first landmark real estate development project – DLF Qutab Enclave, which has now evolved into DLF City. DLF City is spread over 3,000 acres in Gurgaon and is an integrated township, which includes residential, commercial and retail properties in a modern city infrastructure with schools, hospitals, hotels and shopping malls. Obesity:

Insight from world’s leading expert

Dr. Nandakishore Dukkipati Dr. Nandakishore Dukkipati (M.D ,DABS, FASMBS) Managing Director, LivLife Hospitals (International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery) Diplomate - American Board of Surgery Fellowship - Advanced Laparoscopic & Bariatric Surgery Fellowship - Gastro Intestinal & Endocrine Surgery

D

r. NandakishoreDukkipati a pioneer, an inspiration, an unflinching authority in his designated domain, and paradigm in the field of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. His genius has transcended through his work in introducing to and helping hundreds, which led him to turn Bariatric Surgery service into a semblance of perfection in the establishment of LivLife Hospitals. Starting his journey into medicine, Dr. Nandakishore acquired his MBBS degree from the prestigious J.S.S. Medical College which is under the aegis of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute. His insatiable quest for knowledge and excellence drove him overseas where he completed his residency in General Surgery at The Brooklyn Hospital Center affiliated to the Cornell University, New York, U.S.A. He later procured a formal fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery from the University Of Texas, Southwestern Dallas, making him the first Indian to do so. He is the first surgeon from the State Of Kentucky to perform a Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS- Cholecystectomy). He adorned the “first cap” yet again in becoming the first South Indian to win the “International Surgeon of Excellence” status.Dr. NandakishoreDukkipatiin an exclusive interview with Poorna Chandra Rao, Correspondent ITCOM Week tells the best practices to prevent and cure obesity. ITCOM WEEK: What are the general causes of obesity? Dr.Nandakishore: The causes of obesity are multiple and complex. It varies from individual to individual based on their genetic factors, behavioural pattern, eating habits, environmental factors, lifestyle and body metabolism. Some endocrine disorders, diseases and medications can also cause weight gain. In children, the main reason for obesity is high calorie food habits and lack of physical activity. These days’ kids hardly get time for sports and other physical activities. Since the calorie consumption is more than they actually burn through physical activities, it leads to obesity in children and 85% percent of children who are obese are likely to be obese as adults.

prevent and reduce obesity? Dr.Nandakishore: One can definitely prevent obesity with a healthy lifestyle. But the lifestyle changes, healthy food consumption and exercise should be lifelong. Not all weight gain and excess weight can be conquered with exercise and diet therapy alone, since obesity is a multi-factorial disease and a lifelongproblem. In certain situations, more than healthy lifestyle may be needed to control Obesity. ITCOM WEEK: Do you think Liposuction, Bariatric and other cosmetic surgeries help in the long run? Dr.Nandakishore: Liposuction is a good process for shaping one’s body but not for weight loss. Bariatric surgery is practiced for reducing overweight and to resolve the other effects of obesity like Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Dyslipidmia etc. And there will not be any side-effects or problems with Liposuction, Bariatric and other cosmetic surgeries if it is done by an experienced professional. ITCOM WEEK: What is the USP of LivLife Hospital? Dr.Nandakishore: Obesity is the mother of all diseases like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, several types of cancer, osteoarthritis etc..The Bariatric & Metabolic surgeries and a 360 degree care to control obesity and its side effects are the USP of Livlife Hospitals. Our team determines if surgery is right for the individual, and which procedure best suited after analyzing the results of nearly 22 tests that test majority of body systems and psychology of the person. Our programs are focused on addressing obesity as a

complex clinical condition that needs modern treatment protocols, research, and education. Our bariatric team is led by American Board of Surgery-certified surgeons and recognized as an International Centre of Excellence for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. We have achieved phenomenal results with substantial weight loss in many patients along with resolution of conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension, joint pains etc. In last 24 months, we have helped in reducing collectively more than 50,000 kilos of excess weight in our patients through our comprehensive surgical and non-surgical methods. ITCOM WEEK: How to prevent obesity in Software employees and students? Dr.Nandakishore: It is a well-known fact that the disturbance to sleep-wake cycle affects human metabolism adversely. Human Resource department should follow a regular rotational basis of shifts and not to keep the employees on ‘graveyard shifts’ too long. While it might be easier for HR to practice fixed shifts but in long run, it affects employee’s health and affects the productivity as employees take more leaves with poor health. Employees should avoid snacking on high calorie food and should follow healthy lifestyle and try to do minor exercises every 1-2 hours while sitting on the chair and walk around. In case of childhood obesity, educational institutions can play a major role in prevention by including mandatory sports time and other physical activities in their curriculum. At home, parents should encourage kids to develop healthy eating habits and participate in outdoor sports.

ITCOM WEEK: What are the natural ways to overcome obesity? Dr.Nandakishore: To reduce obesity in the most natural way, three things need to be considered from day one i.e., healthy eating habits, regular exercise and avoiding the sources and activities that could lead to weight gain. A natural balanced low-calorie diet is recommended. One should be vigilant on the intake and consumption of calories and exercise regularly with an aim of losing 1-2 kilos a month. The Srikalahasti style, drawing inspiration from temples and Hindu mythologies, involves graphics using the pen alone. The second has distinct Islamic influence, since the Qutubshahi rulers developed the style. The Islamic form involves work with the pen as well as engraved wooded blocks. She further added that Machilipatnam style had the patronage of the Islamic rulers and catered to a particular religious taste, with the decline of the Muslim rule in the state, their market is dying out and so the artisans, whose only source of income has been the Qalam over generations, have moved on with the changing taste of the market.

Mirrored Mind

40 Retakes

-by Vikram Chandra In this his book, Vikram Chandra returns to his early days as a writer, when he was beginning Red Earth and Pouring Rain, and looks at the connections between these two worlds of art and technology. Coders are obsessed with elegance and style just as writers are but do the words mean the same thing to both? And is it a coincidence that Chandra is drawn to two seemingly opposing ways of thinking? To answer his questions, Chandra delves into the writings of Abhinava Gupta, the tenth- and eleventh-century Kashmiri thinker, and creates an idiosyncratic history of coding. Part literary theory, part tech story and part memoir, Mirrored Mind is a book of sweeping ideas. It is a heady and utterly original work.

-by Avijit Ghosh Avijit Ghosh’s 40 Retakes takes a second look at 40 Hindi film classics which we should have watched more like Footpath (1953), Chandra Shekhar’s Cha ChaCha (1964), Gaddar (1973), Sehar (2005), Antardwand (2010) and more. The book talks about 40 such compelling Hindi movies that have been largely forgotten and the reasons ranging from poor promotion, poor timing, poor luck and poor box-office clout, these excellent films did not become huge hits. They did not become cult classics but had the potential. He tells us why he believes they deserved better – plot, performances and the hidden nuggets. He also tells us lots of inside dope, culled from interviews with stars, directors, technicians.

Book Review

-by Devdutt Pattnaik Popular mythologist and illustrator Devdutt Pattanaik retells the Ramayana, drawing attention to the many oral, visual and written retellings composed in different times, in different places, by different poets, each one trying to solve the puzzle in its own unique way. This book approaches Ram by speculating on Sita: her childhood with her father, Janaka, who hosted sages mentioned in the Upanishads; her stay in the forest with her husband, who had to be a celibate ascetic while she was in the prime of her youth; her interactions with the women of Lanka, recipes she exchanged, emotions they shared; her connection with the earth, her mother, and with the trees, her sisters; her role as the Goddess, the untamed Kali as well as the demure Gauri, in transforming the stoic prince of Ayodhya into God.
