Tony Hadley in Festival Fundraiser .................................

ony Hadley is to give a very special, one-off performance to help raise much-needed funds to support the charity Lichfield Festival – the region’s premier multi-arts festival – of which he is a Patron.

Lichfield Festival and Lichfield Cathedral Present Tony Hadley Live, sponsored by City Jewellers of Lichfield, takes place on Tuesday 3rd December and is a unique opportunity to see the singer in the glorious surroundings of the medieval cathedral.

Backed by a fabulous band, the gig will see Tony perform a selection of his classic hits, as well as songs from his latest album and a sprinkling of festive favourites.

The former Spandau Ballet frontman and I’m A Celebrity… star, who has family connections to the city, became a Patron of Lichfield Festival in 2017, helping to emphasise the Festival’s broad appeal and wideranging programming. He has also generously agreed to donate his fee to St Giles’ Hospice which cares for local people and families living with terminal illness.

Lichfield Rotary’s Quiz for Hospice

ichfield Rotary Club recently held a charity quiz night which saw a total of £360 raised for St Giles Hospice in Whittington.

A total of 14 teams, in groups of four, who took part with the winners being Martin Thompson, Dave Crump, Steve Hunt and Chris Goucher from Greenwood Projects of Lichfield (pictured).

David Smedley, Club President, said: “I am delighted at the success of our quiz which culminated in the money for the Hospice. Everyone had a very pleasant evening in pleasant surroundings and final scores were very close all round."

Cycling 2000’s Fifth Anniversary

ycling 2000 celebrates its fifth anniversary on 14th November. Owners David and Fleur Green opened the first store in Dallow Street, Burton on Trent, in 2014 and have continued to successfully grow the business, enabling them to open a second branch in Wheel Lane, Lichfield.

By continuing to grow, the company has been able to offer employment in the local community and now have four part-time and four full-time members of staff, including an apprentice and an industry placement student.

The Perfect Christmas Table

When is the one time you pull out all the stops and cover your dining room table with the best of everything? Christmas of course!

We asked the team at local cutlery firm, Arthur Price, for their top tips for creating the perfect Christmas table.

rthur Price CEO, Simon Price, said: “We are often asked at this time of the year for our thoughts on how to create the perfect Christmas table.

“We love a table full of treats, delicious food and of course some shiny cutlery. I’m a creature of habit… I always prepare the table at home on Christmas Eve. I polish the cutlery and glassware and then I close the dining room door ready for Christmas morning.

“At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong way - the most important thing is spending time with your nearest and dearest.”

Laying the Table

Crockery - Dinner plates should sit in the centre of the place setting.

Then stack the starter plate and soup bowl on top. Side plates always go on the left of the dinner plate.

Cutlery - Place your cutlery on the table in the order of use, starting from the outside and working inwards with each course. Forks should be set to the left of the plate, with knives placed to the right, blade edges facing inwards. Soup spoons should be placed on the right of the knives.

Place the dessert fork and dessert spoon above the plate with the fork prongs facing right and the spoon bowl facing left.

Glassware - This should be set above and to the right of the dinner plate and should, depending on what you are eating, include a red wine glass, a white wine glass and a water glass. The water glass should be nearest to the top of the knives, then the white wine glass, and the red on the outside.

Napkins - Where your napkin sits will depend on how intricately you plan to fold it. If it’s just a simple arrangement, place it to the left, ideally on a side plate that you can also use for bread. If you plan on some serious napkin origami, pop your finished effort in the middle of the place setting.

Top Tips for your Table

• Don’t leave it to the last minute It’s best to dress the table the night before Christmas. This gives you plenty of time to hunt down missing cutlery and crockery, to check glasses are free of watermarks, and means you won’t be thrown if your guests arrive early.

• Give the table a theme Having a definitive colour scheme or theme makes the table look extra special and refined. Start with a simple base – a plain table cloth or runner is best. Then work with a handful of tones.

You can either go with the latest trend or stick with the traditional setting, opting for festive and complementing with raw materials such as wooden-handled cutlery or wicker placemats.

• Create an eye-catching centrepiece Every table needs a focal point and there's so much you could try - a glass bowl filled with candles or baubles, a beautiful silver candelabra, a mini Christmas tree or a festive floral display (just make sure it's not too

tall to block anyone's view when seated!).

• Make it personal Make sure everyone is welcomed to the table with a place setting, so there's a seat reserved for granny and you can add a personal touch.

Place cards can be tucked into a fancy folded napkin or resting on the edge of a wine glass, and you could even add a little present or a few sprigs of rosemary.

Rigid Kitchen The Company raised £402.52 for Macmillan by joining in with its World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign and holding a coffee morning at its Shenstone Showroom on 27th September.

In his year as Chairman for Lichfield District Council, Bob Awty helped to raise £338 for Lichfield Bob Awty presents a cheque to Memor y Lichfield Memory Cafe Café.

Leisure Centre to Remain Open

Hundreds of Lichfield l o c a l s attended a s p e c i a l Cabinet meeting on 7th October which saw Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet vote to recommend that Friary Grange Leisure Centre remains open in the short-term.

The meeting, held at The Garrick, was called in response to a petition to ‘save Friary Grange

Leisure Centre’ that received around 11,000 signatures.

Polling Station Review

Lichfield District Council is carrying out a review of local polling stations and polling districts.

Up to 82,000 local people are eligible to vote in district-wide elections. For each district-wide election, the council organises up to 96 polling stations that span two parliamentary constituencies and 28 parishes.

Lichfield Hockey Club’s Elite

A group of teenagers f r o m Lichfield Hockey Club have been chosen for the England Hockey Elite (L-R) Lily Upton, Seb Fisher, Isabelle Astoin, Jenna Langley, Harvey Hughes Pathway and Sophie Hughes.

Performance Programme 2019/20.

Isabelle Astoin (14), Jenna Langley (14), Harvey Hughes (13) and Seb Fisher (13) have joined the U15 Midlands Regional Performance Centre having been talent spotted whilst playing for their county.

Lily Upton (16) has been chosen for the U17 Girls Midlands Regional Performance Centre this season, having been previously a member of the U15 squad. Finally, Sophie Hughes (16), having also played in the Futures Cup last season, has been chosen for this season’s National Age Group Programme, the highest honour for a junior player.

All players will receive education and guidance by some of the best coaches in the UK with the programme's aim being to nurture and develop

players who have the potential to play at a high level.

Lichfield Women’s Club Donation

LWC chair, Gill Edwards, presents the cheque to MAAC

The Lichfield Women’s Club recently presented the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) with a donation from its charity fund.

On 9th September, the club welcomed MAAC members, Jo and Kelley, who gave an interesting insight into the work carried out. A single flight costs around £2,500 and the NHS doctors, who work alongside the helicopter crews, are paid their normal rates via the charity’s funds.

Overall, considering the cost of medical equipment and helicopter fuel, the charity needs £9 million per year to keep its teams in the air.

Lichfield Women’s Club is a member of the National Association of Women’s clubs and has been continuously active in Lichfield for 52 years. New ladies are always welcome. For further information contact Gill on 01543 253438 or 07975 792549.

Love to Move

Home Instead Senior Care, in partnership with the British Gymnastics Foundation and Life Church Lichfield, has launched a chair-based gymnastics programme, called Love to Move, specially designed to get older people moving and functioning.

Almost every part of this chair-based exercise programme works on bi-lateral asymmetric movement patterns. This benefits people by enabling the left side and right side of the brain to process information independently, thus improving cognitive function, co-ordination, core strength and the ability to carry out daily activities.

Volunteers Tackle Overgrown Garden

CPCG at District Council House

On Wednesday 2nd October 2019, nine volunteers from Lichfield District Council’s Countryside and Parks Conservation Group (CPCG) spent a day in the autumn sunshine removing overgrown trees and shrubs from District Council House in Lichfield.

The group removed pyracantha, holly and cotoneaster from the council garden, which had been blocking the view of the historic District Council House building from Upper St John Street.

When the ground is ready, the volunteers will be back to plant herbaceous plants, such as hosta, hellebore and phlox. These cottage garden plants will allow the views of the council chamber to be maintained, as they will die back in winter and are in keeping with the historic location.

New Curborough Community

emergency food. The completely volunteer-run charity could not help all of these people without the support of individuals, churches, schools and businesses who kindly donate food.

So far in 2019 more than 18 tonnes of food has already been donated to Lichfield Foodbank, 15 tonnes of which has come from individuals donating at supermarket and church collection baskets around the city.

The team from Citylife in Lichfield will be volunteering with Lichfield Foodbank on Thursday 21st November at Tesco Extra in Lichfield – pop in and say hello to us!

Tippers’ Christmas Market

IM Land has begun searching for development partners for a new 750-home sustainable new community near Curborough.

The Lakes of Curborough will bring new homes to the area as well as a range of amenities, including a 210-place primary school, sports pitches, and public open spaces, alongside a new centre for the Staffordshire Air Cadets. The Curborough Hall Countryside Centre will also sit at the centre of the new community which promotes local produce, arts and crafts.

The Lakes at Curborough will benefit from improved access from Watery Lane and Netherstowe Lane, with new walkways and cycle paths connecting the new neighbourhood to Lichfield city centre.

Join in the fun at the annual Tippers Christmas market, to be held on Saturday 23rd November.

There’ll be lots of local craft stalls in the Lichfield showroom selling everything from luxury leather goods to handmade decorations.

Local chef Simon Smith will be on-hand to provide tips on achieving the perfect Christmas dinner and, as always, there’ll be mulled wine, mince pies and other refreshments available.

Money raised from the event will be donated to St Giles Hospice in Whittington.

Lichfield Foodbank is saying a huge ‘thank you’ to its supporters in Lichfield for their donations.

Since opening in 2014, Lichfield foodbank has provided over 400,000 meals to people in crisis.

Tastes of the Season It’s all in the Game!

Game season is upon us at last. Not to everyone’s taste but those who enjoy it await its arrival with enthusiasm.

Gone are the days when pheasants were hung outside in the shed until the maggots fell out of the bottom before being deemed ‘edible’.

Nowadays they are readily available in supermarkets, butchers and farm shops.

Bear in mind that wild game of any sort is a much leaner bird than one that is farm reared.

They have to forage their own food and travel long distances to get it therefore they burn off their fat. For this reason, it tends to be much drier and should always be cooked with care.

Pigeon, for example, will be as tough as boots if cooked more than pink and the same tends to apply to all other game so you need to be careful.

Method

Take the legs off the pheasant, then skin and remove the meat. Remove the breasts and fill with the leg meat, wrap in a rasher of bacon.

Either pan fry or roast the breasts in a moderate oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and add chopped shallots and diced celery to the pan. De-glaze with red wine vinegar and reduce by half. Add double cream, lemon zest and juice, add the game stock and bring to the simmer, cook until semi-thick.

Pheasant and Prune Sausage with Bubble & Squeak

When I cook game birds I always take the legs off and cook those separately as a confit as they are too tough when just roasted.

Pheasant with Celery and Piquant Sauce

1 whole pheasant 2 x bacon rashers 2oz red wine vinegar 1 lemon, zest and juice 8oz double cream 4oz game stock or gravy 2 x sticks celery, peeled

4 x pheasant breasts 1 x chicken breast 4oz dried prunes 1 x red onion Seasoning Thyme 1lb seasoned mashed potato 4oz cooked sprouts

2 x grated carrots 1 x red onion ½ pt thick gravy 1 shot port Prune juice

Method

Whizz the pheasant and chicken breast through a food processor along with diced red onion and seasoning. Add chopped prunes and thyme.

Pipe mix into cling film and fold as a sausage.

Poach in simmering water for five mins. Cool, unwrap and fry as a sausage.

For the bubble & squeak, finely dice the red onion and mix with the mash, grated carrot and chopped sprouts. Fry the mixture in a little oil and butter.

Boil the gravy, add the port and prune juice.

Assemble the dish as shown.

s we move from autumn to winter and the party season is on the horizon, one factor often overlooked is how to update your make-up to reflect the festive period. Whether you wear a lot or a little make-up, you can make some quick and easy adjustments to your usual routine to give you that extra party pizazz. Here are some top tips to make sure you look the belle of the Christmas ball.

Festive Tip 1: Brows, brows, brows Eyebrows are essential to frame your face and can change your whole look if done incorrectly. Firstly, identify what type of brow look you’re aiming for – the big, heavy brows favoured by younger women may not suit a lady in her 50s. Secondly, decide whether you’re going to use brow cream (great for a big night out) or an eyebrow pencil (perfect for a lighter look). Always, without fail, do your eyebrows first!

Festive Tip 2: Eyes OR Lips Smoky eyes deserve the spotlight, so why take the shine off them with bright red lipstick?! Decide where you want your statement look to focus – glamourous eyes that can have false eyelashes added to them or perfectly kissable lips in a bold and bright colour. Mixing both often looks too overdone, so choose wisely.

Festive Tip 3: Base Colour At this time of year, a heavier base is needed to give your complexion an even tone and colour. Foundation, as opposed to CC Cream or Powder, is ideal for giving your skin the desired look and making you feel ‘made-up’. Choosing the right colour is a whole different story. My best advice?

Don’t put the tester on the back of your hand! You’re not going to wear the foundation there, so put it on your jawline and let it adjust to your skin before deciding if it’s the right colour. Always, without fail, do your foundation last!

And because it’s a special time of the year, don’t be afraid to try new colours.

Start experimenting now – you might be surprised how fantastic that green eyeshadow or pink lipstick can look!

Remembering Richard Lewis

orn in Llanelli, South Wales, Richard travelled the country due to his father’s job as a retail manager for Woolworths. Richard followed in his father’s footsteps and began working as a Saturday boy, aged 15, working his way up the ranks and eventually settling down roots in Lichfield in 1994.

Richard soon became a wellknown and popular face in the city and not only due to his time as manager of Woolworths. He became the President of the Chamber of Trade & Commerce and held this role for 15 years, and in 2014 he took the role of Business Crime Manager within the police.

Richard was very passionate about Lichfield and took great pleasure being involved in the different achievements for the town, including Lichfield a Fair Trade City and Blooming Lichfield to name a few. He always made sure he supported his local community and loved attending any events around the city. He also loved music and was a regular attendee at Lichfield’s Proms and The Garrick.

Devastatingly, Richard was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017. Life expectancy was 12 months however Richard faced it with positivity and courage and doubled that prognosis. Richard leaves behind a loving partner, four children and three grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.

The awards shine a spotlight on the amazing work done by individuals, communities and organisations to make living by water better, by creating vibrant thriving waterways.

LHCRT’s Fosseway Heath Nature Reserve/Lichfield Canal Restoration was judged the best in the Learning and Skills category at the awards ceremony, hosted at a celebratory dinner at the International Convention Centre by waterways champion, poet and raconteur, Ian McMillan.

Lichfield Canal Trust was recognised in the awards for offering youngsters from colleges, schools and scouting groups valuable opportunities to learn and practice new skills.

Campaign to Prevent Using a Mobile at the Wheel ............................

quarter of drivers in the UK, the equivalent of ten million people, admitted to illegally making or receiving calls while driving in 2018*.

This startling statistic is being highlighted by Midlands Air Ambulance Charity as part of the service’s Drive4Life campaign.

The campaign has been launched in order to raise drivers’ awareness of the risks and pitfalls that result in a serious incident on the road, due to road traffic collisions costing the charity £1.68 million last year.

Among all drivers, shockingly four in ten admit to checking social media messages, texts or emails when they are in control of a vehicle, but not moving, such as when they are at traffic lights or sat in congestion, up from 38 per cent in 2017.

which runs speed awareness courses across the UK, suggests drivers enable their mobile’s ‘do not disturb’ feature, so they aren’t distracted or tempted when at the wheel.

Andy Wheeler, head of technical delivery at TTC Group, said: “Driving requires your full attention and anything that diverts your attention away from the road is a distraction, has a detrimental effect on driving performance and can lead to an on-road incident.

“Texting, making and receiving calls or livestreaming while driving is a serious and growing threat. Our advice is simple – switch your phone off and don’t take it out until you have reached your destination and it is safe to do so.”

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s Drive4Life campaign in partnership with longstanding corporate partner, M6toll, is highlighting the cost of attending RTCs to the charity. Each air ambulance mission costs £2,500, which is funded through the generosity of the communities it serves and local businesses.

he latest performance from the very talented Lichfield Musical Youth Theatre was The Greatest Movie Musicals - a sensational smash hit selection from some of the best musicals ever seen on the big screen.

The musical theatre group is now in its 34th year and, for the last few years, has been performing shows at Lichfield Cathedral, to great acclaim. This year’s show gave the young, and often inexperienced, cast the opportunity to showcase the full range of their combined talents with a cavalcade of hits from both the modern era and Photo courtesy of Lichfield Musical Youth Theatre the past.

This show featured a non-stop selection of hits with a jukebox medley of showstoppers from smash hit musicals. Starting with The Greatest Show, from the ever popular The Greatest Showman, the young cast went on to perform All That Jazz from Chicago, Hard Knock Life from Annie, Do-Re-Me from the Sound of Music and Let it Go from Frozen, among many others. The show finished with a trio of classic songs, Pink’s A Million Dreams and This is Me, both from the Greatest Showman, and closed with a beautiful rendition of Shallow from A Star is Born.

With a wonderful orchestra, dazzling choreography and the stage set in front of Lichfield Cathedral, this was a perfect way to see the musical stars of Lichfield’s future.

But don't just take our word for it – read Amy and Matt’s happy homing story: "My husband Matt and I started to volunteer at the Watford Gap kennels in December 2018. We weren’t initially intending on homing a hound but two months into volunteering we had been completely swayed! In February 2019 we homed Teddy, a huge black boy with a heart just as big.We honestly couldn’t imagine life without him. He has such a lovely nature with other dogs and is very good friends with a Frenchie and a Spaniel in the family. He is very adaptable and loves people. He has really shown us his personality over the last six months and is such a cheeky, playful and loving boy who has fit seamlessly into our lives."

Lichfield at Home in World War II ..............................

O

n Remembrance Sunday, 10th November, at 11am the nation will fall silent as a two minutes’ silence is observed at war memorials in remembrance of the Fallen of the First and Second World Wars. Jono Oates looks at the role of the often unsung heroes who stayed at home during World War II; the Home Guard and the ARPs.

As WW2 started to escalate in 1940 and the German army edged closer and closer to the English Channel there was the growing threat of an invasion of Britain. With many troops fighting in Europe and beyond, the nation galvanised at home setting up a home defence army and, with the aerial threat of the Luftwaffe, also putting air raid precautions into place.

The home defence army was initially set up as the Land Defence Volunteers however it soon changed its name to the Home Guard.

Uniforms, ammunition and weapons were always in short supply but by October 1942 a full-scale enemy assault took place on the city of Lichfield itself. This was not carried out by German paratroopers but by opposing members of the local Home Guard volunteers and regular troops. Aeroplanes directed ‘bombing’ over the city while parachutists were dropped over Whittington Heath, Darnford and Muckley Corner.

The results of this dummy exercise were said to prove that the Lichfield Home Guard would have been up to repulsing an attack by enemy forces although this, luckily, was never put to the test.

The Home Guard also ‘kept them peeled’ for other, less war-like misdemeanours and in October 1941 a group of volunteer troops ‘captured’ three runaway children who had hidden themselves on a train at Trent Valley station!

The ARP wardens patrolled the city trying to spot enemy airplanes about to offload bombs and to identify the resulting blazing fires after attacks. They would also walk round the city streets trying to stop lights escaping from windows using the time honoured phrase of ‘Put That Light Out.’ Although bombs did not fall on Lichfield, air raid warnings sounded out at regular intervals, sometimes for several nights on the run.This led the Sheriff of Lichfield, Councillor Frank Halfpenny, to write a letter to the Lichfield Mercury worrying about the lack of sleep suffered by many residents without Anderson shelters who paced round the house during air raids until the early hours. His advice for them was to set up a second bed underneath the stairs of the house with a comfy mattress and pillows, for protection and warmth. He advised them then to say their prayers, place themselves in the hands of the Almighty and they would soon drop off to sleep.

Mrs Savage of Langton House on Beacon Street was also concerned about comfort as she suggested in the Mercury of October 1940 that every woman in Lichfield should knit a scarf, a pair of mittens or a balaclava helmet for members of the Home Guard or ARPs to help keep them warm during the winter months.

In December 1944, as the war was coming to an end and the threat of invasion had disappeared, the Lichfield Home Guard were disbanded and a farewell dinner was held in their honour at the Lichfield Guildhall.

The Company Commander, Major E.A.G. Marlar, OBE, was praised by the Mayor of Lichfield, Councillor Moseley, for all of their hard work during the last four years and in response the Major replied that his unit had become a very efficient fighting force. Now that they had been disbanded he said that his men would need to ‘find another excuse to give their wives for being out all night!’

The Home Guard, memorably featured on the classic TV show ‘Dad’s Army’, were often depicted as figures of fun, and the ARP wardens as busybodies and jobsworths. However, had there been a different outcome of the Battle of Britain these brave volunteers would have been the final line of defence against the invading army.

On Remembrance Sunday we should all give thanks to the volunteers of Lichfield as well as those who gave their lives in the defence of their city, and their country.

We Will Remember Them.

ollowing the appointment of a new head chef, Citylife editor, Kristen Lackajis, was invited to The Strawberry Cabin to sample some of his fantastic work.

Steak Night at The Strawberry Cabin was music to my ears – I’m a HUGE steak fan, although somewhat of a steak snob as well, and I know every eatery within the area based on how well they can cook a steak… Little did I know that they were all in for some serious competition!

Seated at a candlelit table in the cosy bistro, my guest and I enjoyed a smooth red wine whilst perusing the innovative menu before us. Having attended an Italian Evening several months ago and thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful, I had high hopes. So with mouths watering, we embarked on our culinary journey.

For starters, I chose the hand-caught scallops served with red pepper gel, black garlic mayo and crispy bacon, and it tasted as divine as it sounds! Stunningly presented, with incredible attention to detail, the buttery scallops were soft and meaty, with the accompanying flavours and textures working perfectly together. My partner was equally impressed with his chicken liver pate, with onion chutney and crusty garlic-infused bread, which he devoured within minutes!

For our main course, we’d decided to treat ourselves and ‘go the whole hog’ by ordering a chateaubriand to share. Ordering it ‘rare’ we waited in anticipation and we were not in the least disappointed with what arrived! A large hunk of the most incredibly tender, succulent and juicylooking steak was placed in front of us, surrounded by chips, salad, onion rings and two sauces (peppercorn and blue cheese).

It is difficult to find a good steakhouse in the local area. I often find my steak overcooked and dry; sometimes it is not rested enough and therefore bloody; and, more often than not, it is sinewy and chewy… But I simply could not fault what I ate at The Strawberry Cabin! Seared on the outside, soft and pink in the centre, my knife slid through it like butter and it practically melted in the mouth. Despite being presented with a mountainous amount of food, we did not leave a morsel!

Determined to somehow fit in a dessert, we ordered the classic raspberry crème brulee and the strawberries and cream – both of which used fruits picked freshly from Manor Farm itself.

The sweet strawberries and creamy brulee were the perfect way to round off what had been an incredible dining experience! Hats off to the chef!

ycling 2000 now has a defibrillator fitted in place on the front of its premises in Lichfield. The defibrillator is available 24/7 and anyone needing access to it should dial 999 in the first instance.

This defibrillator forms part of the Staffordshire 1,000 project. On the 1st May 2019 AEDdonate launched a campaign to install 1,000 Community Access Defibrillators across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

In Staffordshire, the average time for emergency services to arrive following a 999 call is 8-12 minutes. In the case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), every minute counts, the person’s survival rate drops by 7-10% for every minute defibrillation (and CPR) is delayed AEDdonate and Cycling 2000 are holding a free Defibrillator Training Session at the premises at 50 Wheel Lane, Lichfield, WS13 7EA on Monday 18th November at 6pm for anyone to attend. support group set up to give help and advice to women suffering from breast cancer has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a party for more than 80 of its friends and supporters.

Burntwood Breast Care, founded by Pauline Walker and Marie Hiley, has supported dozens of women who have been affected by the disease over the last decade.

Pauline has now decided to step back from her lead role in the group and has passed the reins over to the new Chairman, Linda Griffith. She said: “I am so proud of what the group has achieved over its ten years. I shall always be part of the group but I want to see it now thrive under a new leadership team.”

Pauline was presented with a bouquet from her fellow group members to mark her ten year service and achievements. Guests of honour included Burntwood Town Council Chairman, Cllr Diane Evans, and Town Council Leader, Cllr Sue Woodward.

The group meets every third Wednesday in the month from 10am-12.30pm at Burntwood Memorial Institute.

Duke of Kent Visits Lichfield

t Mary’s in Market Square, Lichfield, was the subject of a Royal visit on 24th October.

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, arrived by Royal helicopter, which touched down in the grounds of The Friary School, causing a stir amongst pupils!

The Duke’s visit to St Mary’s marked its recent renovation which saw it transformed into Lichfield Library.

During his Staffordshire outing, Prince Edward also visited Lichfield Cathedral and opened a new engineering academy at the Cannock campus of South Staffordshire College.

Your Garden in November

Not long left now until the dreaded ‘C’ word! But before we all get bogged down in preparations for Christmas, there is still time to get some work done in the garden. Hedging plants are traditionally planted during November. Hedging makes a great natural screen and also provides a home (as well as food) for birds and wildlife.

Evergreen plants such as pyracantha, laurel and holly are typically available most of the year round but growers will lift many deciduous plants, such as hawthorn and beech, only once temperatures have dropped, so you may need to wait until the end of the month before you can buy them. In the meantime, prepare your new hedge soil by digging it over and adding fertiliser (such as chicken manure or bonemeal) to the soil, plus some fresh compost to ensure they get off to a good start.

These deciduous hedgers are often sold in bundles of five or 10 plants, which need to be split before planting. Allow around 1ft between plants (2ft for most evergreens). Once planted, they can be pretty much left to fend for themselves over the winter. Ensure they are watered well in the spring to boost growth.You shouldn't need to prune for the first year, to allow them time to fill out.

Planting Fruit Trees follows a similar preparation routine to hedging.

These will now be readily available, and come in a range of sizes - from dwarf varieties reaching only 5ft, up to around 12ft. Apple, pear, cherry and more are all still popular. Plums are generally best planted in the spring as during harsh winters, young trees can succumb to the cold weather.

Ensure fruit trees get lots of water especially in the late spring and summer as without it, they sometimes fail to produce flower and subsequent fruit - or fruit becomes very small and deformed. Ask us for our guide to fruit tree growing when you buy your tree.

ith his insane talent, nothing stands still in Danny’s world. Since reaching the finals of Strictly Come Dancing his career has skyrocketed. Danny has just finished a run in Amelie the Musical, and from mid-November he’ll be starring in London’s West End revival of White Christmas at the Dominion Theatre. Featuring Irving Berlin’s much-loved music, the show is directed by Nikolai Foster.

Before the big switch on, which is taking place at 5pm, Danny will be on the marina promenade welcoming Santa and one of his reindeer, Dasher. No doubt he’ll also be popping into the marina shops looking for seasonal gifts!

Danny is following in the footsteps of many household names to make the pilgrimage to Barton Marina, with past celebrities who have switched on our lights including Sheridan Smith, Claire King, Linda Nolan and Brian Capron.

Help Protect & Improve Cannock Chase

partnership that works to protect Cannock Chase is asking for the public’s views on how it can protect this important landscape in the future.

Cannock Chase Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Partnership includes local authorities, statutory agencies, wildlife conservation organisations and landowners, who work together to ensure Cannock Chase continues to improve both as a home for nature and a place people can enjoy.

The partnership is now consulting on two plans that set out how it will improve the infrastructure at Cannock Chase, including the car parks, footpaths and visitor centres. They also look at how to raise awareness of the vital role visitors can play in protecting this special area.

“2.4 million people visit Cannock Chase every year. With increased housing development and a growing population, the number of people visiting Cannock Chase is expected to go up by 15 to 20 percent by 2026,” said Glenn Watson, the Chair of the SAC Partnership.

“I hope everyone who enjoys living by or visiting this stunning landscape will take the time to read through the plans and give us their views.”

Christmas Light Spectacular at Lichfield Cathedral ............................

he award-winning light and sound show for Christmas, voted 'The Best Event in Staffordshire' for three years running, is back!

The artistic collaboration, known as Luxmuralis, brings The Cathedral Illuminated 2019 which has now become an annual tradition for thousands of people and will, once again, transform the Cathedral inside and out using stunning sound and light projections.

This year’s show is called The Beginning and will build on 2019’s theme at the cathedral of ajourney through ‘Space, Light and Time.’

It promises to be a stunning experience for all the whole family and the perfect start to the Christmas season.

Ticket holders will enter the Cathedral Close from Dam Street and then see a spectacular Christmas son-et-lumiere displayed on the Cathedral School facade (Bishop’s Palace) before seeing the second illumination on the West Front facade of the Cathedral.The wonderment continues as visitors will then go inside the Cathedral for a special interior light and sound installation in the nave.

The experience will also feature an installation called ‘In the Image and Likeness: A Constellation of Images’ artwork by cathedral artist-inresidence Peter Walker working with thousands of school children and community groups in the area.

The Very Revd. Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, says: “We are delighted to bring The Cathedral Illuminated back for the fifth year. It has become a tradition for many people both within the city and around the country as people come from far and wide to see the sound and light show with their friends and families.”

All the music is bespoke and written and produced by Luxmuralis composer David Harper.

‘The Cathedral Illuminated’ begins on Monday 16th December and runs nightly until Sunday 21st December starting at the family friendly earlier time of 5.30pm with 15-minute time slots through to last entry at 9:30pm.

School’s Contribute with ‘Selfies’

Thousands of schoolchildren across the West Midlands are making selfies and creating their own portrait galleries to be part of the biggest art engagement project Lichfield Cathedral has ever undertaken.

In the Image and Likeness: A Constellation of Images by Peter Walker Artist will see home-grown self-portrait galleries hanging in schools, churches and businesses across the county in conjunction with The Cathedral Illuminated.

A selfie station has been set up in the Cathedral for visitors to take part – it is sited next to a portrait of Lichfield’s famous son, Samuel Johnson painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Each year Lichfield Cathedral invites schools, community groups, churches, visitors and businesses to be part of its celebration of Christmas. Previous projects have included 22,000 doves, 10,000 angels and 5,000 stars – all of which have then gone on show in the Cathedral as an integral part of The Cathedral Illuminated.

The summer ended on a high note as the City, for the third time in three years, achieved Gold in the Heart of England in Bloom competition.

This is well deserved reward for all the groups and individuals who worked so hard over the year to attain this wonderful accolade. The City Council’s Open Spaces Officer, Nick Burton has been a key figure in this success and the City Council itself supported several projects that have contributed to this award. Anyone wishing to help in 2020 is encouraged to contact the City Council.

The traditional Sheriff’s Ride took place on 7 September and was a great success, as were the Johnson Birthday celebrations that formed part of the exceptional Heritage Weekend.

Preparations also continue for Remembrance Sunday on 10 November.

Once again the countdown has begun to the Christmas Lights Switch on event on Sunday 24 November and I hope you will join us for what has become an extremely popular event for all the family. There will be a programme of entertainment on the Market Square from around 2.00pm until the switch on itself at 5.00pm. There will also be a festive market and special events at the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. The 2018 event was extremely popular and we can only hope that the weather is as kind to us in 2019.

As this is the final City View of 2019 I would like to be the first to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2020.

Christmas Lights

The Festive Season gets under way in Lichfield on Sunday, 24 November. There will be a special market from 10.00am around the City centre selling food and gifts, events at the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, entertainment in the Three Spires Shopping precinct and children’s rides.

Once again there will be live music on the Market Square Punch the Air from 2.00pm up to the big switch-on at 5.00pm.

During the afternoon from 2:00pm until 4.15pm the audience will be entertained by performances from local groups ‘The Hustle’,‘Punch the Air’ and Lichfield Rock Choir who will be performing a mixture of popular covers and Christmas Songs. The Christchurch School Choir will lead traditional Christmas Carols from 4.20pm followed by a special appearance by the ‘Cinderella’ panto characters immediately before the countdown to the big switch-on at 5.00pm, and Santa might pay us a visit, too!

The Hustle The Mayor of Lichfield, Councillor Mrs Deborah Baker, will join the other civic guests, the cast members from ‘Cinderella’ and two local children - the winners of the City Council’s Mercury newspaper competition - to help with the big switch-on at 5.00pm.

Please remember if you are attending this event that the roads surrounding the Market Square will be subject to a road closure from 9.00am – 7.00pm

Sheriff’s Ride

On Saturday 7 September the Sheriff of Lichfield, Dr Daryl Brown took part in the annual tradition that is the Sheriff’s Ride.

The Sheriff was joined by his parents, Dr and Mrs Neville Brown, daughter and Consort, Miss Imogen Brown and High Sheriff of Staffordshire, Mr Ashley Brough in a spectacular horse drawn carriage. Interestingly, Dr Daryl Brown’s father was also Sheriff of Lichfield in 2011, making them the first father and son to both become Sheriff of Lichfield. The Sheriff The Sheriff’s Family and the High Sheriff of then met up with the other 51 riders at Lichfield College Staffordshire, accompany the Sheriff in a Horse drawn carriage campus to embark on this historic 20 mile perambulation of the City commanded by Queen Mary’s charter of 1553.

The Sheriff’s Ride is the largest event the City Council undertakes and would not be possible without the support of many volunteers, local businesses, landowners and farmers. The City Council would like to thank all those involved for their continued support.

Remembrance Sunday

On Sunday 10 November the Remembrance service and wreath laying ceremony will once again take place. The Civic party will process from the Guildhall to the Cathedral for the 10.00am service, followed by the wreath laying ceremony in the Gardens of Remembrance at 11.00am and to observe the National two minutes silence.

The City Council has commissioned a commemorative booklet, written by local historian Johnathan Oates, telling the story of 15 local men who gave their lives. Copies can be purchased from Lichfield City Council offices and all profits will go to the ‘There but not There’ charity.

Markets in Lichfield

The Lichfield General Markets and Farmers' Market offer a wide selection of goods and local produce from friendly, established and reliable market traders.

As well as the weekly General Markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, a Farmers' Market is held on the 1st Thursday of the month (except January).

The Market Square is also available for hire on a commercial or charitable basis on non-market days.

On the run up to Christmas some traders will be standing on the 21, 22 & 23 December and the General Market will operate as normal on the 27 & 28 December

Located in Bore Street in the heart of the city, the Guildhall is a beautiful historic Grade II Listed Building, and is a magnificent setting for civil ceremonies, receptions and other celebrations.

The main hall has oak panelling and a beamed roof giving a fine mediaeval appearance, and can accommodate up to 160 guests. The Guildroom, on the Ground floor, has paneled walls and timber ceiling and can seat up to 70 guests.

A number of smaller rooms are also available to hire, and are ideal for conferences, seminars or small meetings.

Lichfield City Council is the ‘parish’ authority for the City and is the smallest of the three councils serving the City area.

Within the City we deal with local matters such as the markets, maintenance of open spaces and churchyards, civic and mayoral events, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and public lettings of the Guildhall.

Lichfield District Council (Tel: 01543 308000) is the larger local authority dealing with such matters as planning, environmental health, refuse collection, housing, car parking, arts and tourism, and leisure services.

Staffordshire County Council (Tel: 0300 111 8000) is the responsible authority for wider services such as Education, Social Services and Highways.

Public Participation

City Council meetings are held in the Guildhall, Bore Street. Dates and times of meetings can be found on the notice-board outside the Guildhall, and on the City Council's website at www.lichfield.gov.uk

Meetings are open to the public, with public participation sessions held at full Council and at the Planning Committee. Advance notice needs to be given to the Council of the subject matter of each question, and any person wishing to speak must contact the Council Offices at Donegal House, Bore Street (next to the Guildhall) before NOON on the day of the meeting.

Tamworth Street Past & Present Advertising Feature

From False Teeth to Cod & Chips!

ichfield’s streets are alive with history and this month we look back at the history of some of the shops and houses along Tamworth Street.

Tamworth Street appears in the records as far back as the 14th century and is one of Lichfield’s most picturesque, and varied, streets. It starts at the junction of Lower Bore Street, Conduit Street and Bakers Lane, now the Three Spires shopping arcade, and then sweeps upwards to the steep incline of Greenhill, before joining Church Street.

At the top of the street, close to George Lane, stands number 63 Tamworth Street. In the 1920s it was an antiques shop, the charmingly titled The Old Curiosity Shop. In September 1923 they advertised in the Lichfield Mercury looking for ‘Disused False Teeth’ and promised that they would pay the ‘best cash prices’! By the 1940s it was a grocery and provision store called Thomas Purves and in 1942, at the height of the Second World War, they announced that they had ‘National Cooking Dried Egg’ for all their purchasers – a ‘tasty’ treat during those hard times. In the 1960s the shop was the Florist of Lichfield before it became Pizza by Goli in 1987, as it still is today. The restaurant serves authentic, freshly made, Italian dishes including pasta, desserts and, of course, pizza.

Further down the hill at number 49, William Larkin had a tailoring business in 1850. William was the great-great-grandfather of the acerbic poet Philip Larkin, who lived in Lichfield during the Second World War. Another tailor, the appropriately named John S. Tayler, was offering ladies’ and gents’ suits in 1958 which were crafted by ‘Lichfield’s Only Craftsman’s Tailor.’ In 1962 the shop belonged to Alma Hunter, a lady’s hairstylist, followed by Michelle Hair Salon

Tamworth Street Past and Present - From False Teeth to Cod & Chips! and then Images Hair Fashion. In 2006 the shop changed gender to become The Men’s Room barbers, as it still is today. Next door, at 49a, Turf Accountants operated from the 1960s to 1980 and is now home to Lichfield Factory Specs, an independent ophthalmic opticians. The shop provides a wide selection of fashion glasses and sunglasses at discounted prices compared with high street chains.

At the bottom of the hill stands 29 Tamworth Street and from 1968 to 1992 it belonged to Rackhams of Lichfield. John Rackham was a noted Lichfeldian photographer and in November 1975 his advert in the Lichfield Mercury offered readers a chance to have a colour portrait of their loved ones taken as a Christmas gift for just £8.86, including VAT! John was very well known and respected in the city and became Sheriff of Lichfield in 2004. His former shop is now Luminaire electrical, selling all kinds of lamps, lampshades and light bulbs.

Alongside Luminaire is the old Regal Cinema, featured in last month’s article on the old cafes of Lichfield, and currently being developed as apartments. On the opposite side of the road at numbers 20-22, was Mullarkey’s Fish and Grill Bar from 1939 to the 1970s. Many cinema goers, having seen the latest blockbuster movie, would often pop across the road after the pictures to get their bag of fish and chips for the journey home. Not everyone wanted to pay for the privilege however, and in August 1970 someone stole a box of wet fish, containing sole, haddock, plaice and cod, valued at £10 from outside the shop. It’s now a florist called Heaven Scent.

Further along at number 10 was Wigham’s Stores, a traditional grocers, from 1928 to 1965. Cuthbert Wigham also had a shop on Horse Fair in Rugeley. It is now the home of Hindley’s Bakery, one of the longest standing family businesses in Lichfield. Hindley’s produce cakes and breads freshly prepared in their in-store bakery as well as having a café serving food and hot drinks. Owner Duncan

Hindley also runs a number of bread-making courses giving customers the skills to bake their own bread.

Some shops have a long tradition of the same type of business operating over the years. Number 13 is a case in point, where it was a butcher’s shop for nearly 100 years.

In 1880 the owner was Mary Anne Craddock, then Henry Craddock. In 1916 William Littler took over the shop followed by Frederick Manley in 1955. In 1976 it was the turn of Alan Clay who, in February 1977, was offering meats especially for the deep freezer, with mince beef at 52p per pound, frying steak at 90p and New Zealand lamb at 54p per pound. In 1987 the butchers’ timeline at number 13 finally came to a close when the Framework framing gallery opened, as it still is today. Framework Gallery provide a professional full range of framing services from small to large frames with expert advice always on hand to match the right frame to the picture.

At the junction where the road meets Conduit Street stands number 1 Tamworth Street, an imposing Victorian building, originally called Burlington House. In 1893 Misses Butler and Holmes provided a milliners’ service and by 1951 it belonged to Phyllis George who ran a ladies dress shop (she also had a shop on Bow Street in Rugeley).

Next door, at number 3, John Key had a menswear shop from 1949 to 1970. In the mid1970s number 1 Tamworth Street was the Town and Country Building Society and in the 1980s both number 1 and number 3 became the Woolwich Building Society. Now the building is home to E&S Jewellery who have a fabulous collection of exquisite branded jewellery and watches. E&S Jewellery have kindly provided us with a photograph of the shop as it was in 1967 - the sign for John Key’s menswear can be seen on the shop blind.

Lichfield’s Tamworth Street is a lovely street to walk along, with a whole host of independent shops and businesses to choose from, whilst admiring the shop frontages and remembering the shopkeepers of times gone by.

Staffordshire Finds Soar to Glory

taffordshire finds sold for tens of thousands of pounds at Hansons’ October Fine Art and Library Auction.

Star lots included a 1997 copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which was taken along for free valuation at Bishton Hall, Hansons’ new Staffordshire venue. Seven phone bidders took the price to £46,000.

Another find to impress was discovered in a Staffordshire home. A sailing-inspired oil painting, initialled by celebrated Flemish marine artist Bonaventura Peeters (1614-1652), made £19,000. Also found in Staffordshire was a watercolour by St Ives artist Walter Langley (18521922).

“It had no official title so I simply called it ‘Waiting for the Boats’.

Carrying immense charm, Walter Langley collectors agreed it was a formidable example. It sold for £10,500.

“Another artwork to excel was Lot 1089.This facial study in pencil and coloured pastels of a classical male was a preparatory study for the

Four phone bidders battled against a room bidder with the gavel falling at £17,000.

“I was also proud to market an impressive array of vesta cases collected by the late Mick Finnikin. Together they made just under £10,000. The highest price went to my favourite, Lot 328, an unusual early 20th Century 18ct gold Vesta case with a rebus design of four vices – women, champagne, gambling and horse racing. It sold for £1,300.”
