Cultural Tourism

Santana de Parnaíba highlights its historic side. The city seeks to preserve its history and is a reference in the matter, with 209 properties listed in its Historic Center, such as the Casarão Monsenhor Paulo Florêncio da Silveira Camargo (which currently houses the Anhanguera Museum), the Capela do Suru, the Igreja Matriz, the Cine Teatro Coronel Raymundo and the Historic Center itself, referring to four centuries of history, with single-story houses and two-story houses that were built in the street alignment, being the largest architectural ensemble listed and preserved in the State of São Paulo.

In the history of Brazil, Santana de Parnaíba was the starting point of the expeditions of the Bandeirantes, famous explorers of the Brazilian territory. Nowadays, the city now receives another type of explorers: the jeepers, who meet at the Mother Church monthly and leave towards the hills that circulate the municipality, where they can enjoy muddy terrain and a lot of green area. There are six main trails, whose lengths vary between 3 km and 9 km.

Santana de Parnaíba takes cultural production by citizens seriously and encourages tourism. The city hosts some of the most traditional festivities in the region, such as Carnival, which in the 2020 program brought more than 25 activities between different blocks, counting on the traditional opening of the folk group “Grito da Noite”, which left the streets of the Historic Center guided by the beat of the drums, following the folk tradition of African origin (samba de bumbo).

Corpus Christi, a celebration that has been present in the city for more than 50 years with the traditional assembly of sawdust carpets, carried out by the citizens themselves. In 2019, the carpet had more than 850 meters, using about 50 tons of sawdust and other materials.

The Drama of Passion staged in Santana de Parnaíba is the 2nd largest in the open air in the country, set in a scenic space of 15 thousand m², in the Edgard de Souza Dam, on the banks of the Tiete River.

Several events move the city; The Antigomobilismo Meeting is held annually on the last Sunday of June, bringing together automotive rarities, thus exposing a little of the history of automobiles in Brazil. The Feast of Cururuquara unites the religious festivity dedicated to São Benedito and the commemoration for the abolition of slavery, with cabocla prayers, mass, procession and samba kick drum performances. There are also the traditional Cantatas and the setting up of the Christmas Crib, one of the largest in the state. In addition, there are recurring events, such as the Arts and Crafts Fair and Music in the Square, which are always held on Sundays.

Santana de Parnaíba is also the starting point of the pilgrimage “Caminho do Sol”, a route of more than 240 km, which ends in Águas de São Pedro. Inspired by the paths to Santiago de Compostela, the journey takes 11 days (which can also be done by bicycle, in three days). Since 2002, the year of its creation, more than 20 thousand people have made the pilgrimage. And in 2019 the Pilgrim’s Passport of the Caminho do Sol was launched, which allows the pilgrim to “accumulate” the kilometers of the Brazilian route with the pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. There is also the “Roteiro dos Bandeirantes”, which leads to eight cities on the banks of the Tietê that were part of the history of Anhanguera and company.

CAT - Tourist Assistance Center, located in front of the Bandeirantes Monument, provides residents and visitors with information on tourist spots, tourist events, food services, accommodation, tourist routes, among others.

September 7th Civic Parade drew thousands of people

On the Brazilian Independence Day of 2019, there was the traditional civic parade, which had the theme “Once Upon a Time”, where the participants paraded with themes of children’s stories, fairy tales and characters related to the history of the city. The novelty of this edition was the responsibility of the Department of Culture, which exhibited panels with images of the main tourist spots in the city.

The Lyra Martial Band opened the event, which is organized by the Department of Education and counted with the participation of more than 3 thousand members, among the students of the municipal schools, the city security forces such as the Municipal Guard (GMC) ), Child Guard, Civil Defense, Military Police, members of the Fire Brigade and the Brazilian Army, as well as the Rainha da Paz association and the Child and Adolescent Community Center.

Several services and cultural spaces for residents

Santana de Parnaíba offers several spaces for the population to access art and culture. Museu

Parnaibano De Música Benedito Antônio Pedroso, for example, is located in the Historic Center and preserves the history of music and musicians from Santana de Parnaíba, gathering collections of different types, from coal discs to CDs, as well as musical instruments.

The Leandro Manoel de Oliveira Cultural Center, in Cururuquara, offers workshops on capoeira, handicrafts and a reading room with works on popular culture, art and literature. The Center is maintained through a partnership between the Educational Sports Foundation Pro-Child and Adolescent (EPROCAD Foundation) and the Santana de Parnaíba City Hall and also with sponsorships from the Federal and State governments.

CAA - Centro De Apoio ao Artesão is a space for the exhibition of handicrafts produced in the city, and also has several courses for the community, such as handicraft workshops and courses to help the artisan put his art on the market.
