SMOKE BARBECUE

Model, Event Promoter and City Dweller Magazine Columnist Zach Williamson visits the Merrion Centre to try out Smoke Barbecue It seems as though there is a new restaurant opening every week in Leeds and our city has become a great place for midweek evening entertainment and we are quickly becoming the barbecue capital of the north.

barbecue scene previously but never visited this particular venue before, we were interested to see what was in store. We got a taxi so we could have a drink or six, but driving to Smoke Barbeque is easy and the brand new ‘Citi Park’ is right next door and parking is only £2 after 6pm.

One of the front runners in this barbecue revolution is Smoke Barbecue. Situated at the Merrion Centre in perhaps one of the cities latest areas to see mass renovation and investment, Smoke Barbecue is in prime position facing the First Direct Arena.

As we pulled up outside and entered, I was really impressed by its decor and aesthetic appearance, the restaurant is bigger that it looks from the outside and very clean and crisp inside. From mood lighting to big wooden dining tables and warm looking booths, it’s perfect for colder nights. There is also a huge feature wall that you cannot miss as you walk in with Graffiti styled writing which reads “Put the fork down its time to get dirty” and those who know me will vouch for me when I say that I loved this.

As a lover of all things barbecue and also a huge fan of craft ales and burgers, the chance to combine both with my partner Lauren was something I couldn’t say no to.

Smoke Barbecue originated in our Yorkshire sister city Sheffield after an inspired trip to what some might say is the spiritual home of barbeque food, Austin, Texas.

First opening in 2013, they have homed their unique taste and barbeque skills to combine locally sourced Yorkshire meat with the taste of the USA. As the dark winter evenings draw in, I think everyone needs a good feast to get you through the week, so after a long Thursday working in Manchester some great food and drink was exactly what was needed.

We were soon warmly greeted by a hostess who let us choose our booth and gave us menus to look through. All the staff were very kind and gave us some great recommendations from their menu.

We started with a drink though.

Lauren had the standard glass of prosecco and I went for a Freedom American larger which is served in a large typical American style beer glass with a handle, a great authentic touch that every beer drinker will love.

On a Tuesday through to Thursday, there are two menus.

You can go from either the

standard menu or the ‘Leeds Ultimate Menu’ consisting of ribs and burgers that are all you can eat for £15 served with fries and coleslaw too.

The standard menu is also full of great dishes and there are plenty of options for those who love to share large plates. Lauren and I chose to share a Smoke Sharer Plate which is a large selection of quality smoked cuts including pulled pork, baby back ribs, a barbecue turkey leg, chicken thighs and house hot link sausage all served with fries and a side of your choice. And at £30 I think you will agree when I say it’s great value for money.

Service was quick and no request was too much and we soaked up the atmosphere as we chatted and chilled out to the soundtrack of soulful old school American classics from the 60s and 70s. In no time at all our food arrived and a huge plate of treats lay in front of us, literally the best smelling and tasting barbeque food I have had this side of the Atlantic.

The house hot link sausage is a must try and my personal favourite, whilst the meat on the ribs fell off the bone and the Smoke Barbeque sauce is to die for. Please take my advice and buy a bottle like we did as I have literally smothered everything I have eaten since in it.

After giving the mountain of food our best go we retreated but with some food still left the staff kindly wrapped it up to take away. Although we

were ready to burst it didn’t take much persuading us into sharing a banoffee pie, our personal favourite pick from a great selection of desserts.

Again take my advice and leave room for dessert when you visit Smoke Barbecue.

The fact that your taste buds are left feeling transported to the deep south of the USA is testament to how good this food really is, every box is ticked and every taste is catered for from sweet cocktails and burgers to craft beers, ribs much more.

Undoubtedly my new barbecue go-to and I am confident others will feel the same after their first visit.

PINK GORILLA HAIRY LEMON We’ve been working our socks off here at Pink Gorilla recently, however the pay-off has been more than worth it - our clients have really felt the full force of the PG effect with some awesome results! As we plough towards the hectic festive season, here’s a little round-up of where we’ve been and where we’ll be going over the coming weeks.

The Cocktail Experience Although we like to think we kind of rock when it comes to throwing a good party, we were still more than a little nervous as the date of our own party approached! The Cocktail Experience debuted on Friday 14th October, and was a resounding success with 750 attendees enjoying some blockrocking beats and the finest cocktails from the city’s best bars – all against the stunning backdrop of Aspire.

The team absolutely smashed it, and we’d like to say a big thanks to the extended PG family and all the bars involved who helped make the evening so memorable.

Needless to say, The Cocktail Experience will be back, so look out for the next chapter in 2017.

Scotty ‘Prince Charming’ T crowns his Princess After searching the lovely land of Yorkshire high and low, we’re pleased to announce that The White Rose Theatre Group finally found their Snow White – with a little help from the productions leading man. Yes, Geordie Shore heartbreaker Scotty Timlin was in our ‘toon to help the judges pick the very cream of the crop.

Man’s Market is almost here Remember we told you about an exciting new Chinese restaurant concept heading to Leeds? Well, Candypants owner, Ray Chan, has been working on his latest venture flat out and the launch date is almost here. We took a sneak peek at the venue and can confirm that this place is going to be something really special.

So, what can you expect? Well, the project is still very much under wraps, however we can confirm that the menu, décor and even the service are all game changers, so you can expect the unexpected. Look out for details of the opening.

Aside from being a fantastic venue, the bar is full of personalities. One of these is their manager Chris Sleaford, pictured above with his partner.

We caught up with him just after Revolución De Cuba celebrated their first birthday to find out the secret to their success.

You’ve obviously had a long and interesting career, could you tell us a little about yourself and your role at Revolución De Cuba?

I started with the company when I came to university in Leeds, which was a while ago! I actually started as a Glass Collector at Revolution on Call Lane 12 years ago and I’ve been with the company ever since.

I’ve worked at a few venues all over the country though, I had short spells 14

Was it a big decision for you to join the Revolución De Cuba team in Leeds?

I’ve lived in Leeds for 15 years and I just love the city so when the opportunity arose to come back, I took it.

What do you think Revolución De Cuba has brought to Leeds since opening?

It’s different. There’s no one else that does what we do; we’ve got great food, great drinks and that’s all combined with the live music and entertainment. We cater to a wide market of people and we offer things for the daytime and nighttime.

You really do get everyone in here, from people on business meetings to people on a night out!

When you first started working for the Revolution Bars Group, what were

your ambitions?

At first it was a job because I needed some money while I was at university, but once I started working I loved it.

I love the company I work for and you always work with great people in this industry.

I definitely get a buzz from it, I’m not sure I could ever sit in an office and work 9-5!

What do you see for the Revolution Bars Group in the future?

The Revolution Bars Group is expanding! We’re opening another three sites by Christmas and that’s likely to increase by many more next year. It’s continuing to grow and go from success to success.

If one of our readers was wanting to follow in your footsteps, what advice would you give them?

It’s all about working hard and being great at customer service. Without a doubt, customer service

is the main thing. There’s so many places in the city so if the customer focus isn’t there then you won’t survive.

What do you like to do outside of work to unwind?

I like to spend time with my family! My girlfriend and I have just had a baby; little Teddy. He’s thirteen weeks old now and he takes up most of our time.

It really is amazing to start a family and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

What do you think the best thing about Leeds is?

Leeds is great to look around, there’s loads of different areas now and I think that just makes the city stronger. However, I’ve got to say Call Lane!

If you’re planning on hitting Europe’s ski slopes this year, I highly recommend booking with me as soon as possible, to avoid disappointment and grab the best deal.

Rooms are already filling

Leeds Bradford Airport has convenient departures to all the most popular European destinations – Austria, France, Switzerland and Italy. Choosing the right resort is key to any great holiday and this is never more true than with ski trips.

Do you want to stay in a traditional Alpine village like Austria’s quaint Obergurgl or head for a resort with highoctane après ski nightlife, like Zermatt in Switzerland or France’s famous Val d’Isere, packed with chic bars and clubs? I can help you make the right choice.

If there are novices in your party or kids that haven’t skied

before, I’d recommend Les Arcs in France with its wide choice of nursery slopes or Cortina in the stunning Italian Dolomites, where friendly instructors will help instil confidence and get the basics right – Italians are great with kids! Or you could choose Wengen, nestling under Mount Eiger, which has the added attraction of great toboggan runs and Europe’s highest funicular railway; just in case skiing turns out not to appeal to some. Tour operator, Inghams, also provide a handy ‘Learn to Ski’ package, including ski and snowboard rentals, lessons, lift passes and insurance.

If this is your first ski holiday, I recommend you ‘try before you buy’ and visit a dry slope, like Xscape Snozone in Castleford or the Halifax Ski and Snowboard Centre. At the very least you should hit the gym

a few weeks before – many now offer special winter sports conditioning classes.

For those of you who’ve done it all before and crave the adrenaline rush provided by black runs and off-piste adventures, I suggest you head for Chamonix, a resort that many find addictive thanks to its terrifying runs and truly spectacular scenery - including Mont Blanc, western Europe’s tallest mountain. Or why not pit your skills against Verbier’s notorious slopes which can compete with the toughest in the world? After a hard day’s skiing you can enjoy the equally tough challenge of its full-throttle nightlife!

REVEALED: ALL THE DETAILS BEHIND PLANS TO DOUBLE THE SIZE OF LEEDS CITY CENTRE The Atkins consortium, made up of a group of leading global design, engineering and project consultants, has been awarded a contract to develop the masterplan which will guide the revamp of Leeds Station into a distinctive modern destination and fully integrated national transport hub.

In basic terms, this is bold ambition set out

by Leeds City Council to double the size of the city centre. Leeds station would become key national landmark and transport hotspot featuring high speed rail, leading to huge investment in the city centre and the South Bank

area. The redevelopment of the station is also expected to provide approximately 13,000 new jobs in Leeds.

Leeds Station is already a vital piece of national infrastructure being the busiest station in the north of England used by over 100,000 passengers a day, with those numbers forecast to more than double over the next 30 years reaching a level similar to Gatwick Airport.

However, these plans will hopefully link neighbouring communities to the city centre through new walking routes and better public transport links.

For Leeds Station (also now referred to as the

Yorkshire Hub), the Atkins consortium is tasked with developing the current masterplan into a blueprint to guide all improvements in the short, medium and longer terms. This includes how to incorporate high speed rail services from HS2 and the proposed Northern Powerhouse Rail, sometimes known as HS3, together with national, regional and local transport services.

Improved access for cars, taxis, buses, public transport, cycling and walking will also be part of the plans, along with examining options for offering easy access between high-speed rail and other services. This

could include how to make best use of areas surrounding the station, such as the Dark Arches undercroft.

In addition they will work on adding further detail as to how to maximise the commercial opportunities offered by the redevelopment of the station for the city and region, which would then lead to this expansion of the city centre.

They will also be tasked with ensuring the new station design reflects the unique character of Leeds as well as integrating it with the broader South Bank regeneration and the plans to make Leeds city centre more pedestrian-friendly.

An updated station masterplan featuring the work by the Atkins consortium is likely to be completed by next summer.

It’s clearly a very exciting time for the city centre.

Britain’s intergenerational divide deepens as young adults look set to be worse off in retirement than their predecessors.

The vote to leave Europe perhaps captured the nation’s fractured mindset perfectly. Relatively few young adults voted for something that could ultimately deny them an automatic right to live and work in the EU. Moreover, their collective viewpoint stood in stark contrast to that of older generations, for whom issues of identity seemed to trump economic concerns.

Generational divides were once drawn along cultural and social lines. Baby boomers seemed to go against everything their parents had believed, in terms of music, fashion and philosophy. But nowadays the divide between old and young is just as likely to be denoted by expectations of wealth and prosperity.

Today’s 18–21-year-olds enter the workforce at a time of austerity, soaring house prices, student debt, and low wage growth. Even on optimistic scenarios it looks likely that they will make much slower progress on pay than their predecessors, challenging the notion that each generation will do better than the last.

To compound the problem, ‘twentysomethings’ are starting their careers at a time when their pay is being suppressed by

firms plugging deficits in their final salary schemes that, in the main, protect benefits for older workers.

This means less investment capital to help businesses grow, and less money available to invest in the pensions of younger workers.

The government hopes to plug the pensions gap through automatic enrolment – a scheme that places workers over the age of 22 and earning more than £10,000 into a workplace pension scheme by default. Although minimum contributions are currently a long way from being able to provide for a comfortable retirement, auto-enrolment should lead to better engagement with retirement planning.

Aside from the government’s efforts to tackle the issue of falling pension scheme membership, some families are starting to consider how to use their combined resources in the best, most tax-efficient way to benefit younger members. This may be to help them gain a foothold on the housing ladder, clear debts, or build a pension. But with the right advice and planning, transferring wealth to the next generation can be extremely rewarding in all these cases, offering simple ways to reduce a future Inheritance Tax liability.

What is my landlord’s responsibility?

What is my responsibility as tenant?

Again, the tenancy agreement will likely explain exactly what you are responsible for. As a general rule, you will usually be responsible for using the flat in a “tenant-like” way (including minor repairs like changing light bulbs, making sure you don’t cause any damage to the flat, using any fixtures and fittings properly), reporting any required repairs promptly to your landlord, and providing access to your landlord for works to be done.

Should I do the work myself?

If your landlord refuses to do the works, or is not responding to your messages, it may be advisable to carry out minor works yourself. If you are going to do the repairs work yourself, you will be responsible for the quality for the works, so it is important that you use an authorised contractor.

I would recommend keeping a log of all your attempts to contact your landlord, and copies of any letters or emails sent.

If the disrepair is substantial, it may be possible to take action in the courts either for an order which will make the landlord do the works (“specific performance”), or for money to compensate you (“damages”).

Also, if the disrepair has caused you health issues, you may have a personal injury claim against your landlord.

CIARAN BINGHAM FOUNDATION TRUST The Ciaran Bingham Foundation Trust are appealing for Christmas presents and raffle prizes for the South Leeds elderly this Christmas.

In 2010, the Ciaran Bingham Foundation Trust (CBFT) was set up by friends and family in memory of Ciaran, a young man who died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19.

The new group was aimed to help both people all over

Leeds, identifying ways all social groups can come together to help each other.

Mainly, the charity aim to help elderly people.

Quickly, the charity identified social isolation among older people as a major issue. In particular, the charity noticed a need for “out of hours” services and social activities for older people to take place in the evenings, at weekends, and over holiday periods.

Particularly over the busy Christmas period Through regular events in different venues across Leeds, the charity are meeting these targets.

Margaret Bingham has worked tirelessly to raise money for the charity as they have also organised a thirteen and a half mile memorial walk, a sponsored sky dive, ladies pamper nights and other themed party evenings.

LEEDS BUILDING SOCIETY Volunteers from Leeds Building Society joined the ongoing efforts to transform the River Aire waterfront following the damage caused by last winter’s flooding.

Eight colleagues from the Society’s branches in Leeds joined a clean-up session, organised by Leeds based charity Groundwork, at the Whitehall Road waterfront. One of the Society volunteers was Michelle Capell, manager at Head Office branch, who 28

said: “We had a fantastic day which involved getting stuck in with various tasks such as clearing away overgrown vegetation and removing litter.

Dear Dweller, Ideally you would need a referral and especially if it’s via insurance. I would see your GP again and express your concerns, asking them to take you through each symptom and explain to you there thinking behind what has been done. In Leeds if you have had a cough for over 3 weeks and are over 50 you can get a chest xray without a referral from a GP. Check the internet for details. If the basic tests have been done, i.e bloods, spirometry etc and all are ok then you could make a case for a referral on to the respiratory team or request a private referral to somewhere like the Nuffield.

Dr J Hi Dr Jones, I’m worried about the appearance of some scars on my body, varying from spot scars to a scar from surgery, is there anything

you can do to reducing the appearance of these?

Dear Dweller, There are many treatments available now for improvement of scars. From Vitamin E type creams, to laser, microdermabraision and microneedling in the form a dermal roller. Some of the dermatologists specialise in scar reduction and it is worth spending some time researching this before making an appointment with someone. Just make sure that they are fully accredited and reputable.

Cross fit training Cross fit training is a relatively new form of exercise. It takes a variety of training techniques and puts them all into a single work out. It is a great way of increasing strength, flexibility and your cardio vascular system all at the same time. Try doing one of these sessions once a week and see if you are a fan of the way cross fit training sessions are done. It’s also a great way to lose calories and increase your heart rate through the roof!

Leg press v Squats The majority of people these days do either leg press or squats in the gym. They are both great exercises for developing leg strength.

When you start to lift heavy weights with squats, it could be a good move to change it up to leg press. You can lift a lot more weight correctly whilst doing leg press.

Technique in squatting is a major aspect and if not done correctly with heavy weights can lead to injuries.

Med ball core circuit

crunches, V-sits and other core exercises are a great way to work and strengthen your core muscles. A great way to mix this up is to add a medicine ball into your exercises. By adding a medicine ball into these exercises adds extra challenge and can make your core muscle more efficient and stable.

Sitting down Sitting down for long periods of time has shown that it is a big factor in lower back pain. This new research has shown that we are sitting more and more and also shows an increase of people complaining of lower back pain. Try some little things such as, eat breakfast standing up, sit on a exercise ball instead of a chair and if you drive for more than 2 hours, pull over and have a 5 minute stretch.

These little tips will add up and hopefully prolong any future lower back pain.

Yoga Yoga is a great way of keeping flexible and increasing your overall health and wellbeing.

One session a week can help your training immensely. There are a few different varieties of yoga and all have their own health benefits. It’s also a great way to relax and recharge your body.

We can honestly say, hand on heart, that in the 10 years we have worked in the fitness industry we have never ever heard anyone say they were getting results too quickly... not quick enough on the other hand!

Again it’s not all our fault, with the cheap promises of 6 packs in 6 weeks, drop a dress size in 30mins, bikini ready in 7 days, TeaToxes and shake diets you can see why people will expect instant results.

A) You go on said ‘Fad Diet’ get quick results but like that pay day loan have to pay it all back with interest (meaning you gain the weight back and then some).

Let’s break it down, option A – the lure of fast, easy results, 2 shakes a day, ready made meals or my favourite a completely nonsense combination of food like the military diet.

None of these taking any effort, you mix your shakes, you microwave your meal or you eat your piece of toast and one egg (WHAT?!).

In fact we tell a lie, these require lots of effort! Effort to stop yourself from eating anything else other than these few calories per day!

Yes you will see results in the same way that you would if you ate 3 Mars Bars per day, you are living on a huge and non sustainable calorie deficit. There is simply no longevity to this plan, that’s why they are 4 week, 21 days, 2 weeks or even 3 day ‘diets’.

If you cannot picture eating the

way you are in 6 months time then there is something wrong with your plan.

The weight loss you experience from these plans will be mainly made of water and hard earned lean muscle mass – less than ideal metabolically and certainly not going to make you look any better.

There is also this bizarre notion that you do a crash diet, drop the desired weight and then for whatever reason you won’t gain it back when you recommence eating the way you did to want to diet in the first place?

So let’s explore Option B, a more sensible approach, you know the “I want to lose a stone before my holiday in 6 weeks” as opposed to ‘’I want to lose a stone before my holiday in 6 days’’.

This is certainly not as sexy a sell as drink two of these and eat one of these per day, but nothing worth having ever came easy remember!

Set your goal and then it’s all about assessing where you are right now, are you gaining weight or is it stable? What does your daily food look like? Is it mainly convenience, processed foods?

Are you eating all the right foods but in all the wrong amounts?

Are you eating the right kinds of foods for you?

These are a whole heap of issues that are not taken into account by a 7 day diet that you copied from a magazine.

Looking at the nutrition plan for the long term not the short term is key, if you have someone who has less than ideal eating habits, say miss breakfast have a meal deal lunch and a takeaway at night then expecting them to overhaul their entire concept of food is just too much – getting this person to improve just one thing will be a step in the right direction, drinking more water or even finding a breakfast that they don’t mind eating will be achievable and working towards their long term goal.

You shouldn’t be in a rush to make these changes, remember that habits make results, will power comes and goes and that is where people fall down, take on too much too quickly and can’t cope.

And if you stall along your journey (which you will) don’t get frustrated and spit the dummy out, reassess where you are and make adjustments but most importantly, remember it didn’t go on over night so don’t expect to reverse 5 years of bad nutrition in 3 weeks, stick with it and don’t be in a rush!

City Dweller Magazine columnist and TV Producer Yvonne Francas-Mellor heads down to hair and beauty salon RMUK for a day of luxury.

From the second you walk through the door of RMUK the wonderful aroma hits you. It’s the distinctive fragrance of relaxation, serenity & little luxury.

The entrance is deceptively small, like the Tardis, but with a truly amazing interior and once you’re through the door, all your cares and worries seem to leave you behind. I was met by Tim Sanderson, the style director, who recently joined RMUK and he gave me a guided tour. What an amazing place this is. Each room has such a different ambience depending on what treatment you’re having. From the relaxing sanctuary of the Aveda day spa, to the buzzing, vibrant hair salon, to the luxurious beauty salon each area offers

something special. While you’re either waiting for a treatment or between treatments, you can enjoy a cocktail or a glass of fizz or pretty much anything you like on the terrace or in the fully stocked bar. My appointment was at 10am so a little early to enjoy an alcoholic beverage, but my cappuccino didn’t disappoint.

First stop for me was the beauty salon. My beauty therapist, Alessia, was waiting for me with a lovely welcoming smile and then talked me through the new party packages that RMUK offer. The packages start from a very reasonable £50 per person for a colour gloss treatment, a blow dry and an express manicure to £90 for a Tulasara radiance awakening 30 min facial, a blow dry, an express

manicure and an express pedicure. Well that’s Christmas treats sorted for the ladies in my family!

I opted for Package 3; a ready to go manicure, a ready to go pedicure and a blow-dry. As I looked along the shelves of nail varnish, there were so many colour choices I asked Alessia to advise me on which colour I should have and she was spot on with a natural colour for the mani & a deep red for the pedi.

The pedi was amazing. My feet have never been pampered like this before. I just wish it were summer so I could show them off! It was such a treat, but the best was yet to come…

Tim welcomed me into the hair salon and then we discussed what kind of blow dry I would like and because I was going out later, I opted for a glamorous wavy blow dry. After feeling the texture of my hair Tim talked me through the treatments that would help revitalise my hair and suggested one that strengthens and moisturises. I was then led to a room where calming music is playing while you have your hair washed in the most wonderful Aveda products, but washing was only a small part of the experience.

Kieran gave me a very relaxing head massage while my hair benefitted enormously from the treatment and after a complimentary neck & shoulder massage, I made my way back to Tim. I had heard that Tim had been a top stylist for a couple of other very well known salons before joining the family run

RMUK so I expected a little bit of pretentiousness, but how wrong I was. I felt like I had made a new friend by the end of my blow dry. Apart from Tim making me feel like a celebrity with my full wavy locks, he was friendly and down to earth and I felt like I could tell him anything. It was a fabulous few hours and I left the salon feeling like a million dollars.

I didn’t experience any spa treatments on this visit, but after being shown around the beauty & day spa area I’m definitely going to book myself in. It’s an oasis of peace and tranquility where you can enjoy an array of massages and facials and although I would never refer to waxing as ‘relaxing’, if you need to wax why not do it in a chilled out atmosphere!

I’ve already worked out what I’m going to eat at Cau and drawn up a shortlist of stuff for the flat from John Lewis!

It’s yet another thing that we in Leeds can be proud of. I’ve got some friends coming up from London in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to showing them about and then reminding them of the hideousness of Oxford Street, compared with the beauty and relative tranquility of Victoria Gate and beyond.

Walking about the city there is so much regeneration and building going on, 2017 is looking to be another incredibly exciting year.

Oh my god, myself and JoJo from the breakfast show could’ve spent all day trying on all the different outfits, wigs, and anything else we could find knocking about.

We came away with some amazing looks, had a giggle in the process, and I love that everything you hire has a bit of history after being used in various stage productions over the years. They even hire the place out for parties so if you’ve got a bunch of mates that like messing about in costumes while having a few drinks then this could be for you!

Finally, thanks to the guys at Pintura for putting up with our noise and helping us to create our very own cocktail.

After several dud attempts we came up with something we’re pretty proud of - The Proper Yorkshire! It’s a rhubarb gin based glass of joy and you can find it on sale for the next month or so. £2 from every cocktail will go to our charity Global’s Make Some Noise which helps support some incredible charities like Candlelighters based in Leeds. RADIO AIRE’S ANT ARTHUR MEETS SCOTTY T City Dweller Magazine columnist Ant Arthur interviewed Geordie Shore favourite and Celebrity Big Brother winner Scotty T ahead of his performance in this year’s Snow White Pantomime who’d all been auditioning for the lead role. Scotty said “I’ve been surrounded by girls and I’ve got to pick my Snow White. Normally I’d just have them all, I wouldn’t just pick one...”

We’re really excited about this but also pretty nervous as the start date of the 8th of December gets closer and closer.

When we arrived at Revolución De Cuba in Leeds for the event, we were introduced to Scotty T and got the chance to speak to him. He seems really excited about coming to stay in the city and even said he’ll be leaving the partying lifestyle back in the north east so that he can focus on the panto.

When we asked about the Leeds nightlife he said “I am going to behave myself because at the end of the day, I want to smash this pantomime and I am going to work hard to do it so I’ll be fully sacking off all the nights out.”

Recently, we met most of the team involved in the production as well as some of the cast at the launch night in Leeds. Scotty T was there on the night to chat to fans and to choose his Snow White co-host from the finalists

He went on to add “The Katie Price thing is a load of rubbish. Like, nothing happened at all she’s just a pal. I literally took her for a sunbed at my friend’s salon.

That’s it”.

The toughest part of his job so far was to choose who would play Snow White in the production. The seven finalists gave it their all performing a scene as well as belting out a few numbers from the show.

I’m glad I didn’t have to pick.

In the end, Yorkshire girl Lucy May was selected and she could not have been more delighted to be joining the panto. You could tell almost immediately after she was announced as the winner when she was dressed in her Snow White costume, beaming for a photo call with her leading man.

she told us that although her family have given her some light words of warning, especially surrounding the reputation of her leading man, they could not be more proud and excited for her.

Everybody just seems to been keen to work hard, enjoy themselves and make this the biggest pantomime Leeds has ever seen.

THE BIGGEST ARTIST IN THE WORLD COMES TO LEEDS DRAKE - 8TH & 9TH FEBRUARY 2017 - FIRST DIRECT ARENA AHEAD OF HIS PERFORMANCE IN LEEDS, WE’VE LOOKED AT HOW DRAKE HAS GONE FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO BECOMING THE BIGGEST NAME IN MUSIC

When Drake announced he was coming to Leeds through a simple Tweet, half of the city came to a standstill.

“When are tickets on sale?”

“How much are they?”

“What dates is he performing?”

The buzz took over the city almost instantly. When artists of this calibre come to Leeds, it really shows how much our music scene has changed since the opening of the First Direct Arena in 2013. We’re now a city that boasts a world class music venue with arguably the biggest name in music set to perform there.

While giving Drake the title of the biggest artist in world music is clearly a huge claim, it’s one that’s hard to disagree with given his success over the last 12 months.

His latest album ‘Views’, which was released in April of this year, featured a collaboration with on-off girlfriend Rihanna, ‘Too Good’ and the incredibly catchy ‘Hotline Bling’.

But who can forget the record breaking ‘One Dance’?

Hitting the number one spot in singles charts all over the world, including Australia, Canada,

Germany and the United States, the infectious hip hop song became the anthem of the year.

It was in the UK that it really ripped up the record books though. One Dance, featuring vocals from British recording artist Kyla, became Drake’s first number one single in the UK and managed to stay there for fifteen consecutive weeks. This made it the second longest consecutive number one hit in UK chart history and behind only “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams.

It also became the most streamed song ever on Spotify, racking up over 875 million individual streams. It doesn’t stop there though as Drake also became the most streamed artist ever with over 8 billion streams across his four albums.

But how did he get into this position? How did Aubrey Graham, a little boy from Toronto in Canada, turn into Drake, the Grammy award winning megastar?

Aside from the name change, Drake got in with the right crowd. One of his first singles to bring him mainstream success was ‘Forever’, a compilation with hip hop royalty Lil

Wayne, Kanye West and Eminem. How many other artists can hold their own with such esteemed names right from the start of their career?

It’s not like he was born into it. While his father had some background in music, he was brought up in the working class end of Toronto by his single mother. Drake then went into acting as a teenager but he eventually broke through in the music world when he self-released his first mixtape over a decade ago.

Drake then stalled, delaying his debut album ‘Thank Me Later’ in an attempt to perfect it.

When it was released in June 2010, almost two years after it’s original scheduled release, featuring tracks such as ‘Best I Ever Had’, ‘Over’ and ‘Find Your Love’, he quickly catapulted himself to the top of the game.

Grammy nominations came and more huge albums followed.

Collaborations with Rihanna led to huge songs such as ‘Take Care’ and ‘What’s My Name?’ while he was also credited with popularizing the phrase YOLO (You Only Live Once) in the United States after featuring the term on his track ‘The Motto’.

It was this album ‘Take Care’ that turned him from an underrated hip hop artist to one of the hottest players in the music scene.

The album was met by critical and commercial acclaim and was even called a ‘Masterpiece’ by NME. The album set the tone for the rest of Drake’s Career.

His third album was a continuation of this, including popular tracks such as ‘Started from the Bottom’ and ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’, but it was his latest album ‘Views’ that has really taken Drake to the next level.

Drake is no longer following trends, he’s creating them. As he embarks on his European tour, Drake is one of the few must-see artists in the world.

As a result, this isn’t just a concert for the city of Leeds. It’s an event, that is guaranteed to be the talk of the town in the weeks leading up to his performance.

But who can blame us?

After all, he is the biggest artist in the world.

Drake performs in Leeds at the First Direct Arena on the 8th and the 9th February.
