STUDY PATHWAYS

Whether you want to study A Levels or vocational qualifications, we are confident that the quality of our teaching and our strong links with business will help you to progress and achieve your ambition.

A Levels

Vocational Qualifications

Apprenticeships

We offer traditional A Levels for 16-19 year-olds. Highly valued by universities and employers, they focus on academic subjects, although some are work-related.

These qualifications are all about the world of work, covering a range of jobs, industries and professions. They offer a mix of theory and practice, and can also include work experience. With these courses you are likely to be assessed more on your coursework throughout the year than on end-of-year exams. They can be studied at different levels depending on your entry qualifications and experience, and the length of the course will depend on the level.

If you are keen to start work now but would like to continue studying, then an apprenticeship could be the answer. They enable you to earn while you learn and develop the skills that employers look for.

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications studied over a two-year period. Many students who choose this pathway will then go straight to university. Your final grades will be based on end-of-course exams. You can choose from a wide range of academic subjects, some of which are hard to find elsewhere in London. These A Level subjects can lead to a wide range of rewarding degrees and careers. Most students take three or four subjects.

Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study and typically take a minimum of one year to complete. As an apprentice, you’ll be in full-time employment with a local company and receive a wage from day one. You’ll spend time learning about your trade by gaining hands-on experience working on-site with your employer. You’ll also attend the College or an approved training centre to learn the theoretical knowledge needed for your job.

SIXTH FORM COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Places at our Sixth Form College are in high demand, so we advise you to apply early to have the best possible chance of success. Here is a brief summary of the application and enrolment process. Open Day

Our Open Day is Saturday 10 November 2018. At this event you can tour the Sixth Form College and receive information, advice and guidance about our courses from teaching staff and our careers team. Support with online applications and copies of this guide will be available at the Open Day.

When to Apply We recommend that you complete and return your online application as soon as possible after our Open Day. We strongly encourage applicants for A Levels to apply by the end of November. If your application is received later than Thursday 31 January 2019, it is unlikely that we will be able to offer you an interview due to the number of applications we receive.

Completed applications received after Thursday 31 January 2019 will only be assessed if the courses you have chosen are undersubscribed. For details about how to apply and our online application system, see page 15.

References Completed application forms must include a school or college reference, usually from a form tutor, head of year or another teacher who knows you well. It is important that your school processes your reference promptly so that your application is not delayed. Applications will not be processed until your school completes their section of the form. On receipt of your completed application form and reference, we will send an acknowledgement email or letter to the home address provided. We aim to send this out within 10 working days of receiving your application.

Interview Days If we receive your application before Thursday 31 January 2019, and you meet the minimum entry requirements for A Levels, we will invite you to attend an interview in early March. This is an essential part of our application and enrolment process. At your interview, you will meet a member of teaching staff who will discuss with you the programme of study you wish to follow. After your interview, we will contact you with a provisional offer of a place. You’ll need to reply to this offer. We will also invite you to our Taster Day in July. Please note, completing this process does not guarantee you a place on any course. Places will be confirmed following completion of the enrolment process in late August/early September. Enrolment on any course is dependent on your GCSE grades meeting the entry requirements and on places being available.

Local School Partnerships The College has a Sixth Form Partnership with three Islington schools: Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, Holloway School, and Arts and Media School Islington. If you attend one of these schools and submit your application form by the end of January, you’ll be invited to enrol before applicants from other schools or colleges. This entitlement will also apply to ex-City and Islington College students who are hoping to return.

Enrolment Our enrolment days will be at the end of August/beginning of September 2019. Enrolment is on a first come, first served basis and we enrol applicants who have achieved the necessary grades in the order in which we received completed application forms. Again, this is dependent on places being available. If you cannot attend at your given enrolment time, you may lose your place in the enrolment queue. This could result in failure to secure a place on one or more of your chosen courses.

Additional Information You may currently be studying additional qualifications along with your GCSEs at school. For entry to A Level courses at the Sixth Form College, your application will be assessed on your GCSE grades only. However, other qualifications are valuable and will help us understand your skills.

Maths A Level

Music A Level

Music Technology A Level

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space and change. It seeks out problems and patterns, using logic and imagination to make sense of them. As the language of the sciences, maths plays a fundamental role in many aspects of life – from understanding space travel to modelling the spread of diseases. You’ll study algebra, calculus, sequences and series, coordinate geometry, trigonometric functions and differential equations, and will learn how to apply your knowledge to real world problems in statistics and mechanics.

This course combines instrumental or vocal performance with composition, music theory and the appraisal of multiple genres of classical and other music. You will develop as a performer and composer as well as someone who engages with the history and components of music in discussion and in writing. Live performances culminate in a final assessed solo concert. A succession of composition studies and projects will lead to an extended piece, presented in standard musical notation and written in response to a given scenario. Developing an understanding of melody, harmony, instrumentation and musical structure will be central to the analytical challenge of your set works. These pieces are drawn from a very wide range of classical and contemporary music and each offers a unique opportunity to build a rich analytical appreciation that includes a knowledge of context and other similar repertoire.

Are you interested in how music is written and then shaped in the studio? This wide-ranging course introduces you to the fundamentals of multi-track recording and the foundations of sequencing as you compose and record in a very wellresourced and professional environment. During the course you learn how to make high-quality multi-track recordings using close mic/DI techniques, arrange and produce music using Logic Pro X sequencing software and develop a range of listening and analytical skills. Using iMac digital audio workstations, you will work with both analogue and digital mixing desks as you learn a range of sequencing and recording techniques. You will also develop an understanding of the principles of music technology and study the influence of technology on the way music is produced, listened to and consumed.

Philosophy A Level

Do physical objects really exist? Is it possible to prove the existence of God? Socrates claimed that “the unexamined life is not worth living. It is in this spirit that philosophers have explored fundamental questions about the human condition, including how we ought to live, whether we have free will and whether our lives have any meaning. We explore if our ideas about right and wrong are simply emotional responses to the world or if there are moral facts that we can discover. We consider if we are simply biological machines or if there is something mysterious about consciousness that we will never be able to explain.

Photography A Level As a result of camera-phones, more photographs will be taken this year alone than have been taken in all of history. But what makes a good photo? This creative course introduces you to the theory and history of photography, allowing you to develop your critical understanding and your own photographic style. You will learn to edit in Adobe Photoshop and will explore a range of experimental techniques such as printmaking, photomontage and cyanotyping. You will also experience darkroom processes at the renowned Holborn Studios.

Why should we be governed? What is democracy and how close does the UK political system come to meeting this ideal? These are some of the questions we will discuss that will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of British politics. We will explore political ideologies such as liberalism, conservatism and socialism and the extent to which these can be found within the parties competing for our votes. In year two we focus on global politics and questions around globalisation, conflict, human rights and the environment.

Physics A Level

Psychology A Level

Physics explores our world from dimensions of billionths of a metre to billions of light years; from quarks to the edges of the visible universe. It forms the basis for the technology in our lives. Is light a wave or a particle? What are atoms made of and how do we know they exist? What are the forces that hold them together? What is antimatter? Why does the Earth orbit the sun? How are space, time and gravity related? If you are interested in these types of questions, you will enjoy A Level Physics.

Why do individuals behave the way they do? How can we investigate differences between people? This exciting and inspiring course introduces you to the core concepts in human psychology, and ways of planning and conducting your own psychological research. These are some of the questions that will be examined through different philosophical, ethical and religious traditions. You will be introduced to the main teachings of Buddhism and the role religion plays in contemporary society. We will debate what it means to say that an action is right or wrong and you will discuss the nature and importance of religious experience and explore one of the strongest arguments against the existence of God: the problem of evil.

This subject will give you an understanding of how society works (or doesn’t work). You will study different sociological perspectives on the themes of socialisation, social inequality, culture, identity, power and control. You will explore how class, gender and ethnicity affect life chances, the nature of the relationship between the individual and society, and the extent to which we now live in a ‘global society’.

Textiles/Fashion A Level This practical design course takes a broad experimental approach to a range of textiles practices including dye, print, digital, stitch and embellishment. Through a series of creative projects you will learn how to develop ideas by engaging with drawing and research, how to create textiles samples and realise your ideas into final outcomes. Q. ARE ANY OF THESE COURSES AVAILABLE TO ADULT LEARNERS? Some of the courses in this guide are also offered as adult classes. Unfortunately we don’t offer A Levels to adult students. Q. HOW SOON CAN I/MY CHILD APPLY? You can start to apply from October 2018. Make sure you apply early to avoid disappointment – many students leave it too late, only to be disappointed when they find that there are no places left on their chosen course. See page 15 for How to Apply. For applications to the Sixth Form College see page 62.

Q. HOW WILL I/MY CHILD TRAVEL TO COLLEGE? All five of our Centres are within walking distance of tube, rail and bus links. For full addresses and travel information, please see the map on the inside back cover.
