Our History

City and Country School opened in the autumn of 1914 in a threeroom apartment in New York City’s Greenwich Village, founded by one of the pioneers of Progressive Education, Caroline Pratt. Soon after, Lucy Sprague Mitchell joined Pratt in her work, offering financial assistance that afforded larger quarters for City and Country School’s schoolhouse, along with her own teaching expertise.

Caroline Pratt believed the use of open-ended work materials offered children the opportunity to recreate the world around them and dramatize the events occurring in it. The wooden unit blocks she developed for students ages two through seven were widely admired and copied. Pratt and her teachers began a practice of documenting their work in unprecedented detail A full

A community is a place where everyone can contribute their unique perspectives and gifts, and our families who receive financial aid do exactly that In collaboration with the Business Office and the office of CLEI, we have put together a packet of information to provide guidance to all scholarship families ”

FAQs

What factors go into the Financial Aid process? Should families who receive financial aid be concerned about NOT receiving financial aid annually, once deemed eligible and admitted?

To determine your eligibility for financial aid, you must submit an application via the School and Student Services portal and upload all requested documents. There is no income limit that automatically makes your family ineligible for financial aid. The financial aid committee considers your income, assets, and expenses, including educational costs for other children.

If you feel your family cannot afford to pay the full cost, regardless of your income, we encourage you to submit a financial aid application.

Financial Aid is awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and families must reapply each year. Financial aid awards are supported by the school’s budget. If your circumstances do not change drastically from one year to the next, the school will endeavor to continue to meet your needs.

Does my child's teacher have that information? Under what circumstances is my Financial Aid information disclosed?

This information is not disclosed to teachers and only disclosed to division directors in rare circumstances.

Other than those directly involved in the Financial Aid process, which C&C staff members are aware that our family receives a financial aid award?

The High School Placement Coordinator will know which Xllls receive financial aid so as to help them with the process when applying to high schools. If your child requires nontuition support such as an evaluation, tutoring, or therapy the learning specialist may need to know that your family receives financial aid in order to navigate the process

Does the school provide connections between families who receive financial aid for support and other opportunities to gather to discuss common themes and concerns? If so, how does a family make that connection?

The School does not provide the names of families who receive financial aid to other families as this information is confidential.

FAQs

How does C&C provide a supportive environment for students who receive Financial Aid? I am concerned my children will be left behind/omitted from certain activities and groups due to economic reasons.

City and Country School aims to create a community where students are valued for their individual gifts and community contributions. Teachers intentionally build community within the Group and build meaningful relationships with all students so that every student feels safe and comfortable in the space, regardless of their family’s socioeconomic status.

Teachers engage in professional development around diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as identify focused instruction to better equip themselves to create classroom spaces where students feel an authentic sense of belonging. In addition, the Office of Community Life, Equity, and Inclusion is committed to working with teachers, students, and families to ensure that no student is omitted from any groups or activities due to their family’s socioeconomic status.
