SUNAK SPLASHES THE CASH ON COST OF LIVING PACKAGE WITH NEW TAX TO FORCE HAND OF UK’S ENERGY GIANTS JACK BARNETT, STEFAN BOSCIA AND NICHOLAS EARL RISHI Sunak yesterday launched a fresh tax raid on British business to fund part of a £15bn cost of living package to soften the impact of rising inflation on the economy. British oil and gas firms will be hit with a 25 per cent windfall tax, billed as a “temporary targeted energy profits levy”, though the impact will be offset by investment-based tax reliefs. The Chancellor’s intervention will see
every household in the UK given £400 to help pay their energy bills, with significantly more support going to most vulnerable households. Sunak said the new windfall tax, a policy Labour has been calling for since January, was necessary because the industry is claiming “extraordinary profits not as the result of recent changes to risk taking or innovation… but as the result of surging global commodity prices”. The levy goes beyond Labour’s suggestion of a 10 per cent tax, but
firms can effectively cut their levy bill by 90 per cent by investing the same amount in UK projects. In a potential sign of things to come, Sunak said he was “urgently evaluating” the sizable profits made by electricity generators like Drax. Sunak and PM Boris Johnson preside over a UK economy which features the highest tax burden since World War II. £ ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: PAGE 2 £ THE CITY VIEW: PAGE 2 £ ENERGY GIANTS REACT: PAGE 3
