Experience the wonder of language and stories told through the drama of dance. Author and travel writer Stephen Scourfield will read excerpts of his writing, distilled from his travels in WA and abroad. These readings will then take the physical form through short, powerful performances created by Ochre Contemporary Dance Company in a fascinating exploration of the creative process as text is interpreted through dance. The readings and performances will be interspersed between courses from a specially designed menu based on Australian bush cuisine.

The words of two prominent West Australian authors are articulated through the language of dance in this evening of short contemporary works performed by the talented Aboriginal and non-Indigenous dancers of Ochre Contemporary Dance Company. Excerpts from the writings of Stephen Scourfield (As the River Runs) and Miles Franklin Award winner Professor Kim Scott (That Deadman Dance) will be presented through dance, followed by brief insights from the choreographers into the process in which they engaged to bring these words to life in the studio.

WILDFLOWER DREAMING: SHIRLEY CORUNNA AND THE COOLBAROO LEAGUE 1952 - 1962

In 1952 aged 17, Shirley Corunna (nee Bynder), a young Yamatji woman, moved from her home in wildflower country north of Perth to the city for work. This exhibition celebrates Shirley’s journey of discovery and independence and provides a snapshot of the social life of Aboriginal people living in Perth during the 1950s.

In 1792, the Scottish entrepreneur Robert Barker merged the Greek word pan (all) with hórãma (view) when he was searching for a word to describe his 360 by 180 degree painting of the city of Edinburgh. The exhibition examines the impact of the panoramic formats from the early years of the 19th century to current work by contemporary artists and scientists.

COLOURS OF THE EARTH UWA CULTURAL PRECINCT

Facilitated by the curator of UWA’s Earth Science Museum, the Colours of the Earth program is designed to combine children’s interest in drawing with exposure to a hands-on experience with colourful minerals and rocks. Using coloured pencils, participants can attempt to reproduce the beauty to be found in rocks and minerals on paper, either free hand or on a crystal outline. E.DEC.
