Our Improved Online Registration System: Civic Rec

Last year the City launched a more user friendly and convenient online registration system, called Civic Rec to better serve you.

Improvements for our customers include: • Ability to create your own login and password, or link to an existing Facebook account.

• Easy access to your online account, including records of receipts, activity schedules, and rental contracts.

• Simplified registration process, with the ability to quickly search and filter activities by age range, activity type, or day of week.

• A mobile responsive interface that shows the best view regardless of screen size.

ORINDA TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL (OTAC) OTAC is a fun, welcoming, teen driven community service organization. Each year OTAC members host special events for teens, work closely with the City of Orinda and City Council on teen issues, and provides community service throughout the Lamorinda area. If you’re looking to make new friends, impact your community, and have fun the Orinda Teen Advisory Council is the club for you. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 4:00 pm, at the Orinda Community Center. Teens are welcome to join anytime. Let us create a full day camp for you, as you choose your own adventure! If your child is enrolled in a morning camp at the Orinda Community Center, Orinda City staff will escort your child to Lunch Bunch where city staff will supervise a lunch period. At the conclusion of each lunch bunch, Orinda city staff will escort your child to their afternoon camp or supervise them until a parent/guardian picks them up. Please provide a lunch for your child.

Students learn new skills, use a variety of media, and extend their understanding of art concepts. Each week has a different theme. Spend a week drawing, painting, and creating 3-dimensional art. Daily projects incorporate a variety of skills and use media such as graphite and colored pencils, watercolor and tempura paints, pastels, paper mache, yarn, and other materials. Bring a daily snack. $25 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first day of camp.

The Coed Thanksgiving Basketball Camp by National Academy of Athletics is packed with fun. Whether your child is a beginner or more advanced player, the drills taught will help them fall in love with the game.

Campers will learn about the game and fitness while having a blast and making new friends.

Whether they want to improve their skills or just compete, we have something that will motivate, educate and challenge everyone. You can feel good sending your kids to basketball camp that’s in a fun and safe environment with a motivation and positive coaching staff. Open to boys and girls ages 7–13.

The Paragon Tennis Fall break camp is an awesome way for kids to get out and learn the sport of a lifetime! NASA THANKSGIVING BREAK CAMP

Mad Science

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in this new voyage of discovery. From the Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, join us and discover the mysteries of space, planets, stars, and more! Watch star dust burn, and journey through a galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars.

Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour. Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light as you learn about space phenomena. Learn about the four forces of flight, living in space, and the challenges of space travel. Last but not least, learn about the secrets of rocket science and even participate in a live rocket launch. Join our space academy this summer for some out of this world fun! Camp-Day Themes include: Earth and Beyond, Astronaut-in-Training, Solar Launch, Eye on the Sky, Space Voyage. $35 materials fee is due to the instructor on the first day of camp.

NEW! Skyhawks Sports Party Ages 3–12Y

Skyhawks

Have a ball with Skyhawks Indoor Sports Parties! Whether hosting a birthday party, special event, or play date, Skyhawks Indoor Sports Parties is an easy way to create a fun and active day for your child and friends. Skyhawks coaches provide a positive environment where young athletes of all abilities can participate in friendly competition with lots of encouragement and a big focus on FUN! Your child will have a blast while developing their skills, confidence and passion for sports. You choose the sport, Skyhawks creates the party. We provide the coaches, curriculum, sports equipment, facility (with tables, chairs and trash disposal), and fun! Parent will provide all refreshments, food, decorations, and paper supplies needed for the party. You can have a max of 24 kids for the party. All participants must be close in age and sign a waiver which will be provided by the City of Orinda.

Parties run from 11:00 am–12:30 pm, 1:30 pm–3:00 pm or 4:00 pm–5:30 pm on Sundays. You will have 30 minutes before and after for set-up/ clean-up

Half Hip Hop and Half Contemporary. For hip hop, learn the basic street moves and popping and locking with this fun and energetic type of dance. Contemporary is a style of dance that uses the emotion, rhythm and mood of the music to elicit movements from the dancers. So you think you can dance? “A Sweet Dream Nutcracker” Production, August 21–December 10 Ages 3–18Y

Patricia Tomlinson

The Orinda Ballet Academy and Youth Company was founded in 2009, by Artistic Director, Patricia Tomlinson. Orinda Ballet Academy is a year round Ballet Academy and youth performing company based in the Orinda Community Center. Offering classes for students aged 3 to 18 years, starting with the Pre-Ballet through advanced pre-professional divisions. In addition to ballet classes, Pilates reformer and combo jazz and tap classes are offered. All students have the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual performances of “The Sweet Dream Nutcracker” (Fall term) and Spring term story ballet. Past productions include “The Firebird,” “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Swan Lake,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Coppelia” and “Peter Pan.” Summer terms hold a demonstration performance. Ms. Tomlinson has over 30 years of professional dancing, and instructing experience.

Ms Tomlinson’s background includes training in NYC under George Balanchine’s world-renown “School of American Ballet.”

Ms. Tomlinson’s performing career began early as a student in NYC, performing with NYC Ballet and Natalia Markova’s company.

Her extensive professional dancing career includes working as a soloist and principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Diablo Ballet, and guest artist in various companies and set ballets through out the United States. She is a certified Pilates trainer in all equipment. Ms. Tomlinson takes great pleasure in working with her students and sharing her passion of ballet and dance.

Parent/Child Class (1–3Y) Much of a child’s early learning comes through physical activity. Kindergym offers range-ofmovement exploration activities where children climb, hang, jump, balance and bounce. Traditional Okinawan Karate-do, Wado Ki Kai (style) means “to learn from all things.” Kids of all strength and experience levels learn Karate in a kid-friendly way. This is a comprehensive program that deals with “street” awareness, avoiding strangers, and self-defense on a kid’s level. Classes are on going. Judo, “the way of gentleness”, is a modern sport based on Jujitsu, the traditional Japanese art of self-defense. Futsal LaMorinda Soccer Club

LaMorinda Soccer Club is excited to announce its 2nd annual Winter Futsal Program. The program was a big success last year and we are expanding it to an older age group division. Parent volunteer coaches will manage their team(s) during game days and will communicate game schedule dates and times. Team t-shirts will be provided. It is played between two teams of five players on the arena floor (eight players max per roster), one of whom is a goalkeeper. Kindergartens GROUP—please note scores will not be recorded. Four teams per age group per grade level.

Those that are interested in playing up a grade level must get approval from the program’s directors. Games will be played at the LaMO Futsal Arena in Moraga every Saturday for the younger age groups and every Sunday for the older age groups. The arena is on turf with walls allowing for continuous play emphasizing fast pace, ball control in tight spaces and creativity. This is a great opportunity for competitive and recreational soccer players to continue to play soccer right up to the Winter Break. Orinda Youth Sports (OYS) Basketball: Developmental League

Basketball: Youth Basketball League

The Orinda Developmental Basketball League is designed to introduce beginners to the sport of basketball in a fun and non-competitive environment. Each week players learn the basic fundamentals of the sport in an engaging manner while learning the importance of teamwork and effort. Players will participate in a 30-minute practice session followed by a 30-minute scrimmage against another team. Each player receives an OYS basketball jersey at the start of the season, and practices and games are held on Saturdays.

The Orinda Youth Basketball League teaches young players the fundamentals of basketball in a more fast-paced environment.

Players will have the ability to progressively build their skills through team-oriented and positive game play. Playing in one practice and one game per week for eight (8) weeks will expose players to varying facets and situations in basketball that will develop their mental and physical abilities. All players will play at least half of every game, and players need to bring their own ball to each practice.

Locations: OUSD Elementary schools Session times and locations are subject to change. We greatly appreciate your flexibility.

Basketball: Youth Basketball Clinics Grades 4–5 The Orinda Youth Basketball Clinics are ideal for older players to develop their basketball skills in a fun, low-stress setting.

Beginning Obedience is the foundation for all training goals.

We teach you how to motivate your dog to want to learn the basics of heel, sit, and down. We teach how to shape the “leave it” and “come” commands, and the command “wait” to prevent your dog from bolting through doors. PUPPY HEADSTART

Get a head start on socialization and puppy manners in this fun and safe interactive class. Your pup will roll and play with other puppies and interact with new people. Tennis Levels: Beginner: Designed for those with little or no background playing tennis. Course introduces fundamental strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, and net play); rules, scoring, and court play etiquette. Advanced Beginner: understands grips, ground strokes and can begin to control the serve. Emphasis on technique, doubles strategy, and movement on the court. Intermediate: Players have a basic understanding of the game, can sustain a rally, and has a serve that exhibits some control, but is in need of a second serve. The USTA will rate you under 4.0 but above 3.0. Advanced: Good consistency, hits with depth and control, serve well (including a good spin second serve), good overhead shots and feels comfortable at the net. HARLEY FARMS—PESCADERO/SAM’S CHOWDER HOUSE

Harley Farms is a restored 1910 dairy farm with 200 alpine goats on nine acres of pasture in Pescadero. The castle, built in 1908, boasts a long colorful history. This 1.5 hour event includes light refreshments and time to revel in the whimsy of this museum-like seaside treasure. With its square towers and walls made of rectangular concrete blocks, this architectural oddity looks like something out of a Shakespeare play. In the aftermath of the 1906, this castle was constructed so that it could stand up to both fire and earthquake. The result was this fortress-like concrete compound in Pacifica. The Castle does have stairs and wheelchairs and walkers do not fit through some of the doorways. After the tour a hosted lunch is included at a nearby restaurant. Activity Level: 3

A free, on demand, door-to-door transportation program for the senior residents of Orinda. Rides provided Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–4:00 pm. MORAGA WAY The long awaited, highly anticipated, new Art and Garden Center is open. Escape into the Wilder hills surrounded by open space. This new facility, with it’s picturesque setting, is the perfect venue for any gathering. The approximate 6,500 square foot “L-shaped” building consists of a single room and three adjacent rooms separated by two partition walls and a small lobby area separating the spaces. The three adjacent rooms can also be used as a grand room impeccably suited for a spirtual retreat. With an open and exposed industrial style ceiling, natural light glistens through the windows and radiates through the room, with the honey-chesnut luxury vinyl tile planks flowing from one end of the room to the other. As you walk throughout the rest of the building, the polished concrete flooring offers high light reflectivity and maintains the bright, clean, and industrial space.

Helpful Registration Tips • For your security, we can no longer accept credit card payments over the phone, or via mail/fax.

• If you are 62 years of age or older, please include your date of birth in order to receive the Senior Discount at the time of registration.

REGISTRATION | FALL/WINTER 2019

General Registration Information Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is required for all classes and camps prior to participation. Register early as some classes fill quickly or may be cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified if a class is cancelled, or if there is a change.

CANCELLED CLASSES

Classes and activities not meeting the minimum enrollment 2–4 days prior to the start of class will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued.

REFUND AND TRANSFER REQUESTS

A 3% facility preservation fee applies to all classes.

SINCE AUGUST 2018

Facility Preservation Fee On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee for the Parks and Recreation Department. The fee is similar to the existing Per Player Fee applied to Sports Facility rentals for sports facility maintenance.

The Parks and Recreation Department implemented the fee with the Fall/Winter class registration beginning August 1.

This fee is currently applied as a tax to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals) in order to provide transparency in how the fee is collected.

The funds generated will be used for the preservation of non-sports specific recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund.

Registration may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the scheduled class for a refund minus a processing fee of $5 for credit cards or $20 for checks. Requests less than 5 days prior to the start of the class are subject to approval by Recreation Staff.

No refunds after the program has begun.

MEDICATION

If medication is needed (prescription or over the counter) for underage participants, a supplemental Parental Consent & Directions to Staff for the Self-Administration of Medications Form is recommended. Form available on our website (orindaparksandrec.org) or at the office.
