The main objectives of the Building Department are to protect the safety, health, and general welfare of the public through structural strength, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation. We also strive to protect the safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the building environment including alteration, repair, removal, demolition, use and occupancy of buildings, structures, or premises.

STREAMLINED PERMITTING

Electronic Plan Review: We are researching electronic plan review software that will meet the needs of the community.

Implementation date: Ongoing

Quarterly Meetings: Quarterly meetings are being hosted by the Building Department with invitations sent to all City and interlocal departments that participate in the plan review process. Meetings are held to strategize the streamlining of the permitting process and to increase the amount of same-day and next-day permits being offered.

Inspection Services: Our online system, Click2Gov, and our automated phone system program,

Selectron, which allow for scheduling of inspections are in the process of being upgraded. Both systems are designed to provide the public the ability to schedule inspections from anywhere at anytime. The newer versions will provide additional options to the public and are more user friendly.

Automated Phone System: The Building Department has implemented this objective and the automated call center is operational. Implementation date: Completed

Credit Card Payments: The Building Department has partnered with Square Up to process credit card payments without the need to come to the Building Department. Online credit card payments are now available for the payment of permitting fees, re-inspection fees, citation fees, violation fines and fees, and research and lien search requests. Implementation date: Completed

WELCOMING NEW BUSINESSES

Business Tax Inspections: The Building Department conducts an inspection of a business prior to a business tax receipt being issued. Requests for business tax inspections are being expedited to reduce the amount of time between the request and the inspection date.

SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC

Taking the Extra Step: Staff is routinely faced with unfamiliar situations and with requests that are outside of the purview of the Building Department. As the center of the permitting hub, all Building

Department staff are expected to take the extra step and to promptly and professionally handle all requests for public assistance. Staff are expected to act as the liaison between other departments in an effort to assist the public whenever possible.
