APWA EQUIPMENT RODEO

Kaitlyn Ballard, Executive Assistant to the Public Works Director

On Wednesday, March 9, 2022, City of Fort Pierce Public Works Department employees Gil Arbelo, Nick Riegler, Keith Roberts, Robert Hennis, Nate Morris, Jay Conley, Clayton Miller, Andy Avery, and Chuck Penachio participated in the APWA Fla Chapter, Treasure Coast Branch, 2022 Equipment Rodeo at the Mid Florida Event Center in Port St. Lucie. They were joined by employees from the City of Stuart, Port St. Lucie, the City of Okeechobee, the City of Sebastian, and St. Lucie County.

This local event was created by the APWA for vendors to show off their new equipment by setting up obstacle courses and challenges that the participants competed in against time. These obstacle courses included a vacuum truck sucking up a basketball and placing it in a basketball hoop, a grapple truck picking up a tire and placing it onto a pylon, a crawler backhoe placing an attached rod in a hole at the top of a pylon, a mini excavator swinging its bucket to catch a tennis ball and dropping it into a 5 gallon bucket, and an electric street sweeper driving through the course without hitting any pylons.

Throughout the day, several City of Fort Pierce Public Works employees won awards and were recognized for their skillsets among the heavy equipment. These employees included Gil Arbelo, Keith Roberts, and Robert Hennis. The Public Works Department was extremely excited to participate in this event as it created a fun friendly environment for neighboring municipalities to come together and test their skills, enjoy a fun day with each other, learn all about the new equipment, and so much more. It was a fun event and the Public Works Team is already gearing up for next year.

The City of Fort Pierce Public Works Department employees continually serve the Fort Pierce Community in many different ways. Whether that is through participation in a local completion, helping at a city event, cleaning up from a natural disaster, or just doing the everyday jobs of these amazing men and women. They will continue their efforts whenever and wherever they are needed. For more information in the City of Fort Pierce Public Works Department please visit the City’s website at
