In my role as Chairman of the Probus South Pacific Board I have the opportunity to meet many Probians from both Australia and New Zealand. During these past few weeks I have been involved in interviewing prospective candidates for representatives on the Board for New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia. I was encouraged by the passion and enthusiasm each candidate exhibited and the members of the Nominating Selection Committee deliberated long and carefully to ensure we selected the best person to represent each of those areas. I am delighted to announce that Graeme Brown from the Probus Club of Leeming has been selected to represent Western Australia, and
Bill Killinger from the Probus Club of Warrawee has been selected to represent New South Wales / Australian Capital Territory. Both these Probians are aware that growth in Probus is our first focus and I am certain these Probians will carry out their roles responsibly following our AGM in August. This is the time of year when Clubs are preparing for a new year under a new committee. It is a wellknown fact that leadership of a Club is a major factor in the success of a Club; leadership and activities are hallmarks of successful Clubs and in my recent travels I have heard of many Clubs who have several different types of activities for their members. Have you planned any new activities for 2020? Will you
participate in a cluster meeting where you can share ideas with nearby Clubs? It is obvious from the reports in the Active Retirees magazines that Clubs have many and varied outings and find all sorts of different ways to celebrate special occasions. Has your Club contributed a photo or story recently? Does your Club have a Publicity Officer? Are you interacting with the Probus South Pacific Facebook page? It is a well-researched fact that if our older people are kept both mentally and physically active, their lives are enhanced and their health is better. Sometimes it is as simple as asking another retiree to attend a Club meeting. If they are afraid or nervous to visit on their own, taking them can provide comfort and encouragement. Of course, once at a Probus meeting they will certainly find new friends and activities to keep them engaged. Thank you to the members who have volunteered their time to participate in the management of their Clubs. Your involvement will ensure your Club grows and becomes the social Club of choice for retirees in your area, and will help them enjoy a Better Later Life. Yours in Probus friendship,

Future proofing your home A new report finds retirees often underestimate the preparation needed to stay at home well into retirement. New nationwide research has found older Australians’ desire to remain living at home increases with age, however the majority have not done enough to modify their properties, creating the risk they will eventually be forced to make unwanted accommodation decisions under duress. Research by the Global Centre for Modern Ageing (GCMA) and released in the report Ageing in the Right Place, An Australian Perspective found that despite wanting to stay at home, only 17 per cent of the older
Australians surveyed thought their home would require repairs or modifications to enable them to do so. Even among those who were experiencing difficulties at home, only 40 per cent acknowledged the need for home modifications. GCMA CEO, Julianne Parkinson, said the GCMA’s national research identified an opportunity for the industry to provide greater public education around home modifications to help people understand their needs, the options available to them and the processes involved before decisions are rushed or forced. “For people who have identified the need to make changes around their home, our research identified key barriers to home modifications, including affordability and being able to find trusted builders and tradespeople,” Ms Parkinson said.
“The right industry partners could encourage earlier and more prudent conversations about home modification before an emergency arises.” The GCMA’s research director, Stuart Smith, said older people increasingly want to remain living in their own home. The GCMA’s research revealed almost two-thirds of those aged 75 plus think they will stay in their home, which is double that of the youngest cohort surveyed (55-64 years),” Dr Smith said. “Helping people to remain independently in their homes is increasingly important. However, we know that this may not always be possible, so it is also critical to understand how ‘home’ can be created in any place of residence.” For more information, visit gcma.net.au

A recent report reveals more than half of Australians over 50 believe the mid-life crisis is a thing of the past and is increasingly being replaced by the threequarter-life crisis. The Australian Seniors Series: 100 Year Lifespan is based on data that Australians are living longer compared to previous generations and therefore retiring later, starting families later – even pursuing pastimes later in life. The report found that a third (31.9 per cent) of respondents admit to experiencing a three-quarter life crisis, and over two in five (45.9 per cent) have seen others go through one. Nick Haslam, Professor of Psychology at the University of Melbourne, has
studied the phenomenon. “The three-quarter life crisis isn’t usually a time of despair,” Haslam said. “It’s more a turning point when people in their late 60s or early 70s reassess their priorities for life with the wisdom and perspective that comes with maturity,” Haslam said. “People may be troubled or in a rut when they enter the crisis period, unsure of the value of their work or jaded with the routines in their life, but they generally come out of it with a refreshed sense of possibility. “They may embrace their work with a renewed sense of meaning, adopt new interests and hobbies, decide to spend more time with family and friends, or plan new travels or study.” APR- M AY 2 02 0 AC TIVE R E TI R E E S

The shot was taken 8km into the walk, and with “big waves” crashing in the background, Fred couldn’t help but ask the rest of the group to throw up some “big waves” of their own. “I’m lucky to belong to Probus Coonara-Cherrybrook, a fairly large and proactive Probus group that provides a very organised structure from which a strong community spirit is generated,” Fred says. “The heart of this community is the plethora of social activities that provide many opportunities to become involved in something of interest with like-minded people, many of whom have become close friends. Our Probus Club has also become the primary motivator and facilitator of much of our travel throughout NSW, Australia and overseas. My wife and I have enjoyed many trips within NSW, but have also travelled to Victoria, Norfolk Island, Japan and Mauritius, sharing some incredible experiences with fellow Probians. “To really take in and understand the benefits of Probus fully, you have
to commit to being an active, involved member. Over the years, my wife and I have always tried to participate in activities of common interest at the Club, and the satisfaction we have received has been significant. I’d also suggest that we’ve become a little fitter too, given that we’re both keen members of the very active walking and cycling groups. “Radio and television writer Andy Rooney once said, ‘You have to put off being young until you can retire.’ That sounds fairly sad, as it highlights how we all get so caught up with our careers and raising a family that we just don’t get time to pursue many of the activities that really interest and excite us. However, retirement can also leave a massive hole in our lives if we don’t get out and proactively fill the void with other interests. My wife and I found joining an active Probus group to be the antidote. “Our Club has more than 20 different activities including walking, cycling, golf, bowls, cards, theatre, solo group, dinners, and the list goes on. Many members get a great deal of satisfaction from becoming one of the group or event coordinators, or committee members, creating and

organising the many activities on offer. As an example, my wife has often been keen to help organise events, and recently she also served on the committee for three years as the Club’s Membership Officer. “The beauty of Probus is that it’s your choice of what, if any, roles you take on. Either way, you’ll never get bored as you spend your time playing at ‘being young’.”

Some of the men in the group – who are never ones to let an opportunity slip by – spotted a piano and gave everyone a “rather bad” (Roslyn’s words!) rendition of “Great Balls of Fire”. Roslyn was on hand to capture the moment. Best of all, this photo was taken with a 2011 iPad 2, proving you don’t need the best gear on the market to take a winning snap. “When my husband and I retired we were concerned we may not have enough to do to keep ourselves occupied,” Roslyn says. “A friend told us about Probus and we went to a couple of meetings at Bella Vista Probus Club. At first we weren’t sure

if Probus was for us, but after being given a warm welcome we became members in 2011. We then started attending various activities and got to meet other members with likeminded interests. Now we look forward to the monthly meetings, and the friendship and fun we have with fellow members. “Bella Vista Probus is a very friendly Club and we’ve made many new friends that I’m sure we will have for a lifetime. We’ve been on trips overseas and within Australia with the Club, and also on non-Probus trips with friends we have made. “I’ve been on the committee as Membership / Welfare Officer for the past three years and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the friendships I’ve made, and having the opportunity to contribute to how our Club is run. We now have no concerns about keeping ourselves occupied in retirement as my diary is full with Probus functions and other commitments outside of the Club. “For anyone thinking of joining Probus, I’d recommend looking on the PSPL website for a Club nearby, and also to talk to friends who may be in a Probus Club. Go along as a visitor to a couple of meetings and see what Probus is all about. As a member, I found attending various activities was the best way to get to know other members. Down the track consider going on the committee or running an activity – you’ll get so much more out of the Club by participating. “Probus makes retirement more fulfilling. Give it a go!”

3RD PLACE PATRICK GINMAN, PROBUS CLUB OF ST GEORGE INC “BEING ’ROUND FRIENDLY PEOPLE” Patrick’s well-framed shot was taken on a trip to the Riverina in May of 2017. He and his fellow Probians visited the Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens, and within those gardens is a beautiful Chinese pavilion that was presented by Wagga’s sister city as a bicentennial gift. When he spotted a path going through a circular hole in the wall, Patrick’s moment of photographic inspiration struck.
“For me, Probus means enjoying the company and friendship of like-minded people who are of a similar age, have all faced the same problems and hardships, and have enjoyed the same joy that life can bring,” Patrick says. “We’ve all brought up our families, so now we’re looking to savour some time doing what we want to do such as trips away, outings, walks, etc., with our fellow members. “Probus has improved our social life immensely. We have a whole new circle of friends and I find that the challenges of holding a position on the committee have helped keep my brain active. We have visited places we haven’t been to before and heard a huge variety of guest speakers at our meetings. “To anyone thinking about joining Probus, I would say: don’t think about it, just do it! I’d also tell them to check out a few Clubs before they decide on one, as some Clubs are more in tune with your thinking than others. I’d also tell them to think seriously about taking on a position on a committee once they have been in the Club for a while. Working in a committee position can be very rewarding and gives you input into how your Club is run.”

4TH PLACE MARGARET BOGGIE, BLACKHEATH PROBUS CLUB “ALPINE HIKERS” Margaret had arranged for Blackheath Probus Club to go on a caravan and cabin trip to Jindabyne. The group went to the top of Thredbo, had a coffee at the top of the chairlift, and then made the very long and very steep walk down. Before they could call it a day, however, Margaret stopped everyone for a photo to mark the occasion, and this very active shot was the result. “When my husband and I joined Blackheath Probus Club in 2008, we had no idea how Probus would come to play such an important role in our lives,” Margaret says. “We were amazed at the many activities the Club had to offer – and not just from the monthly meetings, where we hear from exceptional guest speakers from all walks of life. Friends made over morning tea all make for so much enjoyment, and the activities seemed endless; they included monthly outings, the writers’ group, bushwalking, jazz club, classical music, dining group, holidays, library, and puzzles to keep the brain active. “Outdoor activities in particular play a large part in our lives as there are so many exciting and interesting places to visit. We do day trips from Blackheath to Sydney,
go on the harbour, and visit cultural and historical places. We also go out west to places like Bathurst, Mudgee and surrounds, visiting small country towns for the day. Holidays have included Snowy Mountains, Bright, several country towns in Victoria, Merimbula and Crescent Head, to name a few. The fun and laughter we have on these trips just makes you feel great. “Something very special to us is that the members care about each other; you never need to feel alone in time of need. At Birdsville there are two sand dunes – one called Little Red, one called Big Red – which they just had to climb. When Judith
saw some of her fellow Probians above, she knew the moment was right for a photo because they appeared to be “on top of the world.” “My Club, Ringwood Clocktower, provides the structure and fabric of my life,” Judith says. “After a muchenjoyed working life, it fills what for some could be a lonely void. There’s the possibility of being involved in many activities, some on a regular basis and some a one-off, providing a framework around which to plan; flexibility if life is too pressured; and genuine reasons to

say no to those who perceive the retired as having unending spare time. “Probus broadens horizons and contributes to the wellbeing of seniors. It has provided me with another circle of friends. Many new activities are provided, such as croquet, and I have been to places and shows that I probably would not have sought out myself. I’ve learned new skills and been encouraged to contribute. “This new and diverse demographic keeps me better in touch with the achievements and adversities of those in my area, and often provides additional perspective on local, Australian or overseas events. In times of trouble I see Probus members ‘there’ for each other and the wider community. “Participation is the key. For anyone looking to join Probus, I’d suggest you investigate your local Clubs by speaking with individuals, visiting Clubs and looking at websites to ascertain which Club will help foster your interests, and a Club with an atmosphere that will encourage use of your skills and participation. Get to know people on an individual basis – this not only develops more friendships, but also provides an avenue to discover how many things in the Club function and who has what knowledge. “The somewhat altered quote, ‘A sk what can I do for my Club, not what my Club can do for me,’ brings great rewards – in the end, more so for yourself than others.”

6TH PLACE: BRONWEN MITCHELL YERONGA PROBUS CLUB “TIMES TO LAUGH AND SHARE SPECIAL MOMENTS TOGETHER” Bronwen and some of her fellow Club members took this photo on a trip south of the Queensland border to Yamba, during which time they visited Maclean, a town famous for its Scottish heritage. The town has about 200 tartanpattern power poles, and Bronwen couldn’t resist snapping a shot with five Probians next to five of these famous poles. “Probus, to me, means a local place to go each month to interact with great friends and get to know some new ones. You can leave your troubles at home and enjoy some jolly good company. Probus is a new lease of life for retirees,” Bronwen says.
“Has my life improved? If you’d call being very busy an improvement, then I believe so! After being a committee member of Yeronga Probus Club for a few years, I took on the role of President. Of course, this entailed much planning and preparation – and a little bit of diplomacy! However, besides being busy, I’ve got to better know and appreciate the contributions from members of the Club. Experiencing a friendly, funfilled Club is a definite bonus in life. “I’m sure we’ve all heard the expression ‘Healthy, Wealthy and Wise’. Well, I would tell any prospective Probus member that if he or she joins my Probus Club, they’ll be assured of achieving this
goal in life. Better health will come from an active mind – through discussions and shared experiences – and also from various activities, special-interest groups and regular outings and lunches. “The wealth will come because Probus Clubs are non-profit autonomous Clubs and the subscription fee is quite low compared to many other types of Clubs. But it’s not only money wealth, but also the wealth of fellowship in abundance. “And as for wise? You’ll be wise from listening to, and being educated by, diverse invited guest speakers throughout the year. But there’s also so much to learn merely by getting to know other Club members while sharing their own stories and experiences. Being wise is about showing good judgement, so with over 400,000 Probus members in over 4,000 Clubs around the world, why not join and make it 400,001? Quiet pleasures in Bhutan Rediscover life lived at a slower pace on a trip to the lush mountain kingdom of Bhutan. BY ADAM SCROGGY
I
t’s quiet. That’s the first thing you notice as you drive from Paro International Airport to Thimphu, the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. The tranquility is especially striking since, to get here, you must fly from either Singapore, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Delhi or Mumbai – crowded, frenetic metropolises where life moves far too quickly. Bhutan is the opposite. It’s a land famous for embracing modern life at a slower rate than the rest of the world. It is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air. We roll through Thimphu’s peaceful town centre at a leisurely 15km/h, admiring the distinctive dzong architecture that dots the very lush, and very green, surrounding hills. Green is a theme in Bhutan – by Bhutanese law, a minimum of 60 per cent of the country must remain forested for future generations. The figure currently stands at over 70 per cent, so for the Bhutanese, it’s more than just an inconvenient requirement to be met. It’s central to their national identity. To preserve this pristine nature, Bhutan adheres to a “high value, low impact” model of tourism. This isn’t
a destination for budget travellers; a Bhutanese visa costs a minimum US$250 a day. In Thimphu, we visit temples. They’re far from the last we’ll see on our eight-day tour to this deeply Buddhist land. Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan and home of the Punakha Dzong, arguably Bhutan’s most impressive building. But first, we stop to visit nearby Chimi Lhakhang, a monastery more commonly known as the “Temple of Fertility”. As you walk through the small village of Teoprongchu at the foot of the monastery, you can’t help but notice most of the buildings have large, phallic symbols painted by their doorways. While a Westerner’s
first instinct may be to blush, in Punakha and surrounds the symbol is sacred, made famous by rogue religious leader Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman” of Bhutan who used lewd behaviour and raunchy antics to espouse his own unique brand of Buddhist wisdom. Bhutan’s adoration of Drukpa Kunley offers some insight into its people’s distinctive charm – they manage to combine their deep traditions with a cheeky, and often self-deprecating, sense of humour. HOW TO GET THERE All tourism in Bhutan is controlled by the Bhutanese government, so you’ll need to book with a government-registered tour company in order to obtain a visa. The visa costs US$250 per day in high season and includes entry, accommodation, transport, guide, driver, and three meals a day with non-alcoholic drinks. Flights are extra and will be booked by your tour company, and alcoholic drinks will need to be purchased.

The symbols themselves are said to ward off evil spirits and promote fertility. Indeed, newly married and childless couples from Bhutan and around the world make pilgrimages to the Fertility Temple to seek blessings from the resident monk, and the temple even has an album of family photos sent by couples who became pregnant after visiting. Many of these successful couples choose to name their child “Kinley”, an anglicised homage to Drukpa Kunley. If you ever meet someone named Kinley, ask them how they got their name – there’s a chance their parents once visited Bhutan! Our accommodation in Punakha is built high on a hill and boasts epic views of Punakha Dzong and the surrounding countryside. We enjoy a traditional Bhutanese butter tea and a buffet meal that includes ema datshi (chilli and cheese stew) and Bhutanese red rice before splashing out for a Druk lager, since alcohol is one of the few items not part of the all-inclusive visa. that appears on the Bhutanese flag. The beer tastes good. The views are even better the next day when we visit the Phobjikha Valley, the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes, which arrive from October to February after spending the summer on the Tibetan Plateau. Upon arrival, it is said the black-necked cranes circle nearby Gangtey Monastery three times as if practising Kora, a type of Tibetan ritual. On November 11 each year, the Monastery hosts a festival where children wear crane costumes and perform choreographed dances to welcome their arrival. A great time to visit, for certain. For those with more time (and cash), there’s more to discover in Eastern Bhutan, but as we have only eight days we head back to Paro, our final stop and the home of Bhutan’s International Airport. Paro is also the base for Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

Spectacular is an understatement for this death-defying structure, which was built in 1692 on a cliff face some 900 metres above the Paro Valley. Getting there is no easy task – depending on your level of fitness, it’s a three- to six-hour return hike, and steep in parts. The hike is safe though, and we saw visitors of all physical abilities making their way at their own pace to experience a landmark truly unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s also a tremendous photo opportunity, though you’ll need to wait patiently for a spot to open up among your fellow hikers. Back in Paro for our final night, we settle into our hotel, watching planes take off before they make the 270-degree turn out of the valley and away behind the surrounding mountains. Tomorrow, we’ll be on the same flight path, making our way back to bustling Singapore and then home to Australia, leaving behind the quiet Himalayan Kingdom where life still moves at a slow pace. l

un fact: when out bush, hand sanitizer isn’t just good for cleaning the dirt from your hands before eating a packed lunch. As we gather at the start of the hike to Waterfall Bluff on day two of our three-day tour, our guide and expert bushman, Jef, talks us

through the protocol should you happen to notice a leech upon your person. “It’s pretty easy – just give me a shout, I’ll add a drop or two of hand sanitizer, and off she falls,” he says. Jerry, a Brit visiting Tassie with his wife Nell, pipes up from the back of our 10-person group. “Would you like to demonstrate now, Jef? invader falls to the ground. Life is, indeed, an Adventure.
DAY 1: CAPE RAOUL We’re on a three-day Pack Free Walk on the stunning Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania’s far south-east. It’s a region famous for its spectacular Three Capes – Cape Raoul, Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy – which surround the even-more-famous Port Arthur Historic Site. We’re picked up from our accommodation at Hobart’s waterfront Grand Chancellor Hotel and make the 1.5-hour drive to begin our hike to Cape Raoul. On the way, we cross the narrow Eaglehawk Neck isthmus, which connects the Tasman Peninsula to mainland Tassie. Along the way, our driver, Amy, regales us with the story of convict Billy Hunt, who once tried to hop past the Neck’s guards while wearing the hide of a kangaroo – a plan that was working brilliantly until the guards started using the roo for target practice. We also hear the more uplifting tale of the Tasmanian Devil, which in this area has recently overcome the scourge of Devil Facial Tumour Disease and is enjoying a population increase for the first time in years. Our 14km hike to Cape Raoul begins, and it’s not long before we reach the coastline and our first spectacular view of the towering cliffs that form Tasmania’s southeast coast. Our guide, Jef, is excited to spy the shapes of some surfers way down below – he explains that they’re taking on Shipstern Bluff, one of the world’s most challenging waves. It’s rare to see anyone out at the Bluff, meaning the conditions today must be just right. The group handles the mediumgrade walk to Cape Raoul well, and after a couple of hours we’re rewarded with views of the “organ pipe” rock formation for which the peninsula is renowned. These 180-million-yearold dolerite sea columns shoot out hundreds of metres above the water and are truly a sight to behold.

At night, we return to our chalet accommodation at Stewarts Bay Lodge and enjoy a meal at 1830 Restaurant & Bar. I opt for a smoked trout entrée with scotch fillet main. It’s delicious, and the included bottles of wine wash it down very nicely indeed.
DAY 2: WATERFALL BAY TO FORTESCUE BAY After a hot breakfast at Gabriel’s on the Bay, our second day sees us take on a hike from Waterfall Bluff to Fortescue Bay. Neither are
considered part of the Three Capes, but they’re no less impressive. Day two is a true bushwalker’s delight: by the time we’ve reached the end of our undulating 18km trek, we’ve seen just one other soul on the trail, a runner who surprises us as he darts past late in the afternoon. Aside from Jerry’s well-timed moment in the morning, leech sightings are few and far between. Throughout the walk we pass through nine different types of forest, from dry sclerophyll to coastal heath and myrtle-sassafras,

Travel/ Domestic all dotted with frequent coastal views of the peninsula’s dramatic cliff faces. It’s a long but rewarding walk, and when we arrive at the picturesque white sands of Fortescue Bay, a few group members take the opportunity to remove their shoes for a relaxing final walk along the shorelines to our waiting bus. Dinner that night is at Gabriel’s, and it’s well-earned after the long day of hiking. Battered Tasmanian scallops and an affogato dessert are just the tonic for my tired legs, as are the wines which are, once again, included as part of the tour package. I slept well the night before, but with

almost twice the kilometres in my legs today, tonight’s slumber will be positively dreamlike.
DAY 3: CAPE PILLAR AND CAPE HAUY On our third and final day, the group splits into two after breakfast – half have opted for a three-hour wilderness cruise around Cape Pillar, while the other half (myself included) enjoy an hour or two exploring the Port Arthur Historic Site before heading on a helicopter flight for a bird’s-eye view of Cape Pillar. The flight affords magnificent vistas of Cape Pillar’s

towering sea cliffs and out to remote Tasman Island with its dramatic exposed lighthouse. Our legs appreciate the morning off, but there’s still one more cape to conquer, and it offers arguably the most stunning views of all. After one last included meal at Port Arthur Lavender Farm – salt and pepper squid with Asian style crispy noodle, in case you were wondering! – we begin the 10km hike to Cape Hauy. Our end point from day two is our starting point here, and we take off south from Fortescue Bay along an undulating, step-filled track. After about an hour, we emerge from the forest to reveal stunning uninterrupted views to Cape Hauy. The trail winds through the coastal heath ahead of us, and we know our destination sits just on the other side. We take in brilliant views towards “The Thumbs” to the north, and Cape Pillar to the south. When we arrive at our end point, the Cape Hauy Lookout, we witness the spectacular off-shore dolerite sea stacks known as Totem Pole, the Candlestick and the Lanterns. We’ve officially seen all Three Capes, and all that’s left is to head back across the Neck towards Hobart. Unlike Billy Hunt, we reckon we’ll take the bus. l

Is the time for sharing over? While timeshares are brilliant in theory, they’re coming under increasing financial scrutiny. Here’s what you need to know. BY CHRISTINE LONG

nce upon a time taking a holiday at a timeshare resort may have seemed like an avenue to a no-fuss annual break. Perfect for people who wanted to holiday in the same area each year, they were marketed as a way to access a little piece of paradise without
having to fork out for an entire holiday house or apartment. Some timeshare schemes entitle members to a specific time period such as a stay of one week each year. Others are points-based schemes where you buy points or credits that you can redeem at specific resorts or holiday accommodation properties in Australia and sometimes internationally. But as the years march on many people aren’t feeling quite so relaxed about their timeshare memberships. They may have found they have to book up to a year in advance to secure a stay at their timeshare resort during peak holiday periods. The mounting costs, too, can be a cause for concern, particularly for someone who has retired and begun to live on a fixed income since signing up to a membership. A timeshare membership generally requires the payment of an upfront membership fee. There are also annual levies whether you book a timeshare holiday during that year or not. The annual fees are designed to cover things such as management fees, landscaping, cleaning, refurbishment and administration. They are usually set to increase by a certain percentage each year. There can be additional costs if timeshare members choose to book overseas locations within a timeshare club or if they took advantage of finance deals promoted by timeshare operators. In addition, the contracts associated with timeshare memberships are typically for lengthy terms, locking people in for 20 to 99 years. So while a member’s financial circumstances and lifestyle may change significantly during the term of the contract, the ongoing commitment does not. According to 2018-19 data from the Australian Timeshare Holiday Owners Council, consumers pay $23,000 on average for their APR- M AY 2 02 0 AC TIVE R E TI R E E S
timeshare membership and about $800 in ongoing annual membership costs. The loan interest is 13.5 per cent on average and 48 per cent of consumers used a loan to buy or upgrade their membership. The regulator describes them as a “sticky” product: easy for consumers to get into and difficult to exit. According to the regulator and consumer organisations, complaints by timeshare members indicate that many feel they are not getting the expected value from their memberships. Some people have experienced financial stress because of unexpected increases in timeshare membership fees. Many people hadn’t considered what might happen if they could no longer afford their memberships or if the financial liability was to be transferred to a family member in the future. People who do not keep up their payments may have to forfeit their membership. Even if they decide to sell their membership they can find it difficult to find a buyer or they may have to be willing to sell their membership without making a profit. In the case of one timeshare club, levy defaults by members were growing, placing increasing pressure on remaining members. As there was virtually no ability for members to exit the club, the probability of levy defaults was expected to grow and the club couldn’t afford to pursue the levy defaulters. Holiday rents were also not covering the maintenance fees in many cases. As a result of these issues the regulator has announced it will issue a consultation paper in the first half of 2020, seeking feedback on proposals to address some of the risks of consumer harm occurring at different stages of timeshare membership. This will include considering exit arrangements for consumers. l

etting ready to hit the road for a grand adventure means making plenty of practical decisions. Perhaps you’ve sold up and plan to fully convert to the van life, or a house-sitter is coming to keep the home fires burning while you’re circling Australia. Either way, you may still need a base for some of your treasured possessions. Fortunately, people wanting to lock up and leave their favourite pieces of furniture and personal items are now spoiled for choice. You can put items into a self-storage unit; leave them at home in a locked garage or room; rent someone else’s garage or spare room; or take advantage of a portable storage solution. So, what are the keys to ensuring whatever storage method you choose serves you well? Here are five things to think about to ensure any storage arrangement is stress-free.
1. SECURITY According to the Self-Storage Association of Australasia, which represents 800 members in Australia and New Zealand, one of the key reasons for choosing a self-storage unit over someone’s garage or spare room is security. Good self-storage facilities will have a gated entry, CCTV

So, is it time for you to get smart on home security? There are multiple factors and solutions to consider, and there’s no right or wrong answer. Film camera In the first of a new series that looks at tech that fell by the wayside in the 21st century, we remember the good old film camera… BY ADAM SCROGGY
W
e all recall the process. You take your camera – maybe a Kodak, maybe a Pentax, maybe another – and load it up carefully with a roll of 35mm film. You head out for the day’s activities, rationing your shots carefully because as soon as you hit 12, 24, 36 (however many
exposures your roll offered), that’s it. You might have more rolls stored away in your pack, but “finite” was the key word. A couple of days later it’s off to the photo lab to get the roll developed. You visit your local Kodak store, drop off the film, and come back an hour or two later (or the next day, if they’re busy) and see how your snaps turned out. A few are blurrier than you’d hoped, a couple a little overexposed, but there are a few absolute gems in there too. Grab those photo albums from the cupboard – time to add a few more memories to your cherished collection. Perhaps it was the chilling performance by the great Robin Williams in One Hour Photo – in which he played Sy Parrish, a disturbed photo technician who becomes obsessed with a family who frequent his store – that hastened the demise of companies like Kodak. More likely, it was the arrival of the digital camera; okay, it was definitely the arrival of the digital camera. Either way, for the average joe, the days of developing film have all but vanished. As we headed into the 21st century, photography became more accessible than ever. First came

digital cameras, which allowed you a seemingly unlimited number of shots. Go ahead, snap 1,000 photos – the law of averages says that one is bound to be a winner. You could even view them on a screen as soon as you shot them (bye bye blurriness; adios overexposure!) and then load them up on your computer as soon as you got home. Instant gratification. Next came smartphones, those crazy new contraptions that acted as phones, internet browsers, calculators, alarm clocks, gaming devices and, of course, cameras, all rolled into one. Nowadays we don’t even need to get home before we share our pics; we can simply pluck them from our digital albums and share them with friends and loved ones via email, text or Facebook, perhaps while sitting on the train. So what’s next? Photography continues to evolve; stronger sensors, smaller cameras and new formats arrive yearly. Soon, we’ll be exploring scenes with virtual reality, bringing to life both the 3D sights and sounds of an image. One day, we may well be taking photos with our eyes. But all is not lost for the film camera – in fact, it has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent years, particularly among hardcore photography enthusiasts. High-end fashion houses and publications like National Geographic still use film, though they’re working with some seriously high-end gear. If you’ve been to a wedding lately, you might have even noticed a Polaroid camera at your table, a recent trend that allows guests to snap old-school selfies for a fun guestbook. The film camera is down, but definitely not out. Sy Parrish would be relieved. l

xperts widely agree that a link exists between oral health and general health. As we get older, our oral health increasingly impacts our overall quality of life and ability to manage or prevent certain medical conditions. If poor dental hygiene is left unchecked, many health-related problems – ranging from inconvenient to serious and even life-threatening – might become harder to control. Oral issues like tooth loss, root decay, uneven jawbone, darkened teeth and dry mouth (often a side effect of taking medications) can create an array of challenges for older people including pain, infections, forced dietary changes, discomfort when eating and talking, reduced self-esteem and social isolation. At the more extreme end of the scale, poor oral health can make you more susceptible to conditions like diabetes and aspiration pneumonia, while research has established a connection between gum disease and heart disease. This might all sound like an unfortunate reality of ageing, but growing long in the tooth shouldn’t mean accepting dental incapacities or worse. A proactive approach to dental care later in life helps protect
teeth and gums for longer. In fact, good oral hygiene remains just as important as digestive or heart health – whether you’re newly retired or living it large in your 80s and beyond. Health and Welfare (AIHW) analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2012 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers data, just over half (51 per cent) of people aged 65 and over had seen a dental professional in the previous 12 months. Worryingly, this figure dipped below 50 per cent among the population of 75- to 79-year-olds, and continued to decrease for each consecutive five-year age bracket between 65-69 and 85+. In between routine dental checks at least every six months, it’s crucial to keep practising good oral hygiene habits. Here are eight tips for maintaining and improving oral health no matter your age.
Even if you’re a diligent brusher and flosser, regular check-ups are imperative to ensure good dental health
clean between your teeth at least once per day with dental floss or another interdental cleaner.

Whether it’s working at a pet shelter or lending a hand at a food truck for the homeless, you’ll have a project to be proud of. By meeting new people, visiting new places and learning new skills – as well as doing what makes you happy with those you care about most – you’re actually looking after yourself more than you might realise. EGGPLANT ROLLS WITH FETA, OLIVES AND SUNDRIED TOMATO Serves 4 to 6 l 60 ml olive oil l 2 large eggplant, trimmed and sliced into 11/2 cm thickness lengthways l 60 g feta cheese, crumbled l 60 g kalamata olives, pitted and diced l 12 sundried tomatoes, diced l small handful of basil leaves l 4 teaspoons parsley, fined chopped salt, to taste l freshly ground black pepper
1. In a bowl combine the feta, olives, sundried
STUFFED ZUCCHINI FLOWERS Serves 4 to 6 l 16–20 zucchini flowers l 1 onion, finely chopped l 200 g rice l 2 ripe tomatoes, grated parsley, finely chopped, to taste l dill, finely chopped, to taste l pinch of dried oregano l 60 ml olive oil salt, to taste l freshly ground pepper
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
sauté the onion until soft. Add the rice and mix well coating the rice with the olive oil and about 120 ml of water. Add the tomatoes, herbs and season to taste. Simmer for 3–4 minutes and allow it to cool for a bit.

carefully into each zucchini flower and fold tops over. Arrange in a baking dish. When all finished drizzle a little extra olive oil over and pour 120 ml of water into the baking dish.

Meet the members C ongratulations must go to Geoff Bond, who was voted 2019 Senior Volunteer of the Year for his outstanding work helping farmers in need through the Frontier Services program called Outback Links. The award was presented in Port Macquarie on August 20. This is the second such award for Geoff, who in 2014 was named Mid North Coast Volunteer of the Year. Geoff and his wife Rosalind are members of the Port Macquarie Combined Probus Club. Geoff travels to outback parts of Australia, offering help with building, fencing and gardening to name a few. “I stay on a property and do whatever needs to be done.
Often, this can involve stock work or general handyman work,” Geoff says. “In times of drought the farmer is busy with stock problems and the small jobs around the house such as painting, gardening, fencing simply don’t get done.” Geoff travelled to three properties in 2019 alone, but has completed no less than 30 placements across the country since beginning his service with Outback Links. “I’ve got some skills and, while I’m fit enough, I’d like to keep going. “It’s more important than ever, and unfortunately because of the remoteness of the property nobody is prepared to even look at a job, much less do it. “I’d appeal to farmers who are struggling to not think that

here’d be many examples of husband-and-wife duos as long-serving members of the Probus movement in Australia and overseas. The Probus Club of Vasse in Western Australia is no exception and is fortunate to have several such members.
Verna and Fred Chapman are one such couple who live in Busselton. Verna joined the Vasse Club in June 1992 after retiring as a secretary / accountant and later an instructor for blind adults. Verna is the longest-serving member of the Probus Club of Vasse, having been a member of the Club for 27 years. She has carried the Membership Officer’s duties during those early years and has always contributed to the “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship” aspirations of her Club. Verna is one of two members who currently hold the classification of Honorary Member. Her husband, Fred Chapman, joined the Probus Club of Vasse in May 2005, some 13 years after Verna and after he had retired as a secondary school teacher. He taught at Busselton District High School in 1953-54, then Busselton High School as main Science Teacher until 1960 when he was transferred to Kent Street High in 1960. His other interests include bicycle riding, and he has a deep and current interest in the very popular “Busselton Brass”, which was founded in 1871. l

n December, Hallidays Point Combined Probus Club President Ian Campbell presented a Probus Life Membership Award to longserving member Anna Hamers. Life Memberships are only awarded under exceptional circumstances and Anna’s situation certainly meets the requirement. Both Ian, who is now Immediate Past President, and Anna are pictured right. Anna joined the Hallidays Point Combined Probus Club in March 2006, just three years after its foundation. She assumed responsibility for the choir soon after joining the Club and became its leader for nearly 14 years, until its closing in July last year. Anna has exceptional musical skills and arranged all the music she put forward for the many choir performances. Not only did she arrange the music, but she also led the singers with her own effective conducting style and sung in many of the performances with her very fine-tuned vocal abilities, her preference being for the quartet combination. While still leading the choir, she volunteered for the position
of Catering Officer, responsible for providing quality morning teas for monthly meetings. “It’s such a rewarding and fun job,” Anna says. “I have always loved my six years as tea-lady and I took great pride in finding different treats each month.” Catering Officer is a committee position, so that meant attendance at monthly Management Committee meetings, which commenced in 2009. From here, she progressed to Vice-President in 2015-16 and then President in 2016-17. Since completing her presidential year, Anna has filled the roles of Immediate Past President, Publicity Officer and Meeter and Greeter at monthly General Meetings, and continues to serve on the Management Committee. Recently, Anna was presented with a Life Membership to Hallidays Point Combined Probus Club. Life Memberships are only awarded under exceptional circumstances, and Anna’s situation certainly meets that requirement. The wording on the plaque presented to Anna during the award ceremony read: “Presented to Anna Hamers, in appreciation of many years of outstanding service

Three days of cheer On a cold, grey, summer morning in December, 20 members from the Hobart Men’s and Sandy Bay Ladies’ Probus Clubs and partners departed the Sandy Bay Bowls and Community Club for three days touring the north-east of Tasmania. Morning tea was at Raspins Beach, Orford, and then it was on to the Tasmanian Seafarers’ Memorial in Triabunna, followed by a sumptuous lunch at the Bark Mill at Swansea and a tour of their museum. The atmosphere was very dark due to smoke haze and sea fog as members travelled up the coast. Next, a “grog” stop at Devils Corner, where wines were tasted and purchased, then on to the overnight stop at Tidal Waters at St. Helens. Pyengana the next day featured cheese making, tasting and buying, and a cow and dairy inspection followed by morning tea in Derby, which is now home to extreme mountain biking. The Probians then detoured to Legerwood to see the carved macrocarpa memorials to local men who were casualties of World War I. This was followed by a tour of Bridestowe Lavender Estate Farm, lunch and more purchases, and a night spent at Tamar Valley Resort. Next morning the group toured the historic Woolmers Estate manor house and the extensive National Rose Garden. Finally, a light lunch at Ross and home in the late afternoon – exhausted and happy. A bloomin’ good time Under cloudy skies on Wednesday, October 16, Prospect Ladies’ Probus Club headed to the Table Cape Tulip Farm. They enjoyed a luscious morning tea at Parramatta Creek. This was followed by a lovely country drive to Wynyard, and lunch was an enjoyable meal at the RSL Club. Then, it was on to the Tulip Farm. David Roberts Thomas gave a brief introduction of the history, research and workings of the farm, and some members enjoyed a coffee and shop while the remainder took in the fresh air walking among the tulips. The vibrant colours against the rich volcanic soil was certainly a sight to behold. After taking in the magnificent views, they then headed for home. The rain started just as they boarded the bus. Lucky!
Dover and out Following an extremely interesting presentation by the previous proprietor of the Woodbridge Village store at the November meeting, 21 of the Woodbridge and Channel District Probus Club’s 27 members travelled by bus to Damien and Kellie’s new cafe at Dover for a December Christmas luncheon. An enjoyable meal and entertaining time was had by all. Nick and Norm The Probus Club of Airport District attended a Christmas luncheon in late November. This photo is of Father Christmas with the Club’s oldest member, Norm Lewis, who turned 103 in December.
Quarter of a century In August, the Fleurieu Ladies’ Probus Club celebrated 25 years of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship. One of the guests was local Federal MP, Rebekha Sharkie. Rebekha’s assistant took some photos, including this photo of Marlene Gabrielson, Sandra McClung, President Helen Purdie and June Dunnicliff.
High tea on the river On Sunday afternoon of September 15, 2019, members of the Probus Club of St Agnes Inc attended a High Tea on the River Torrens in central Adelaide. The event was held on one the famous “Popeye” cruise boats that have been cruising on the river since the 1930s. A sumptuous menu of goodies was provided by the tour operator for the enjoyment of all who participated in the cruise. The cruise enabled Club members to view the many changes that have taken place around the Riverbank precinct in recent years, particularly the remodelled Adelaide Oval, Festival Centre and Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Attention was also drawn to several historic landmarks around the river dating back to the foundation of the City of Adelaide in the 1830s.

The Hills are alive On Friday, January 3, 2020 with the temperature in Adelaide forecast at 42 degrees and in a day of catastrophic fire conditions, 19 members and visitors of the Probus Club of Tea Tree Gully embarked on a visit to Kenton Valley Cherry Cafe in the Adelaide Hills. It was great to see that, despite the recent bushfires in the area, the cafe and surrounding cherry trees had survived. This was due to a great fire plan and hard work from owners of the business and Volunteer Fire Crews. On arrival at 9am the temperature at the cafe was a pleasant 27, while the city of Tea Tree Gully was 32.6. Everyone moved out onto the deck where tables were set up under shade sails and protected by a large shady tree. A pleasant breeze wafted along the deck. After enjoying cherry-flavoured drinks, snacks and chatter, it was time to buy up cherries and other products from the gift store to take home. Then it was time to depart at 10:30am when the temperature at the cafe reached 31. Members were very thankful that the Adelaide temperature reached 39 that day instead of the forecast 42. Everyone agreed it was once again a great outing with lots of Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship (and delicious food). Thanks to Activity Officer Joan for once again organising a great outing.

Club news/ Queensland Lunch spot The Probus Club of Hope Island recently reintroduced lunch visits to nearby taverns and restaurants after its monthly general meetings. This picture shows members and visitors enjoying pre-lunch drinks and company at the Hope Island Tavern. This was followed a very interesting talk at the general meeting from local councillor Cameron Caldwell, which put everybody in a good mood to enjoy their lunch!
Down to a tea The Probus Club of Kenmore Village enjoyed its visit to the Chung Tian Temple, a peaceful Buddhist retreat with buildings in the Chinese palace architectural style of red and gold protected by gargoyles and statues, each with its own life message. Vale Don Don McDermott, the Probus Club of Albany Creek’s long-serving Outings Coordinator and inaugural member, and President from 2001-02, passed away on November 11, 2019 aged 89 years. Don assisted in the formation of the Club on July 2, 1998 and served on its Management Committee as Outings Coordinator continuously until his passing – in itself a great achievement. He and his wife Clare have successfully organised over 260 outings, all fully costed and paid for by members. For his efforts and commitment to Probus and the Albany Creek Club in particular, Don received a Premier’s Senior Award in 2005, and a Volunteer Award from Tim Mander MP in 2017. The Club has been fortunate to have had such a committed and effective Outings Coordinator for over 21 years, an effort that Secretary Greg Early says, without hesitation, will never be surpassed.

Club news/ Western Australia Coming up roses On a sunny morning, a group from the Combined Probus Club of Attadale headed out to the Perth Hills to visit Patsy Durack’s Rose Gardens. On arrival members were invited to sit on the verandah overlooking the delightful gardens, where they were served a delicious scone with morning tea. After listening to a most interesting talk from the owner on the history of the Bishop’s House and Gardens, the group was given a tour of the rose garden, which was abundant with spectacular blooms. Patsy Durack gave members many useful tips for growing roses. It was a most informative and enjoyable visit to this very special garden.
Ship shape Probus Club of Fremantle Outings Officers, Peter and Jenny Nailer, organised a sailing trip on the STS Leeuwin on Sunday, November 24, 2019, and the hardy sailors from the Club boarded the ship at Fremantle for a three-hour sail off Rottnest Island. The ship left Fremantle Harbour under power, and once it cleared North Mole, the crew began setting the sails in a stiff 20 knot southerly. The guests on board were encouraged to assist in hauling up the sails. Not all the sails were set, but soon the ship was bowling along at 5.4 knots. Some Club members were invited to try their hand at the ship’s wheel and committed themselves very well. The “secret” number was to keep the sheep pointed 60 degrees into the wind by deft application of the wheel. Some hardy souls even went up the rigging, well protected by safety harnesses, but no Club member was game enough to try this on. All in all, a wonderful day had by all – and no one was sea sick.
Flour power Members of the Port of Albany Ladies’ Club ventured to Katanning for their annual bus trip to have an extensive tour of the recently converted Flour Mill built in the late 1800s. Now called the Premier Mill Hotel, it was bought for a dollar and converted into luxury accommodation, restaurant and bars, keeping the historic features of the Mill in all the rooms and surrounds. Well worth the visit. The tour was followed by lunch at the restaurant, and they visited other places of interest both on the drive up to Katanning and back through Gnowangerup and the Stirling Ranges. Swanning around Ninety-five members and partners of the Men’s Probus Club of Booragoon enjoyed a Christmas Lunch on the first floor of the Swan Yacht Club. This Club has recently been completely refurbished to a high standard and, being situated on the banks of the beautiful Swan River, has outstanding views. The Club’s Christmas lunches are always held in December on the usual third Wednesday of the month. As always in December, the formal meeting was opened and closed in approximately one minute before the festivities commenced.

Judy, a long-serving Probus member who has been Secretary and Vice President, was honoured for her work within the community. She received her certificate from Peter Hoey.
A speaker well worth hearing The Probus Club of Marrara (NT) was pleased to welcome Jason Harpley, audiometrist from Audika, Fannie Bay, to speak on “Hearing Health for Seniors”. Jason provided an informal talk on the importance of monitoring hearing and seeking assistance when issues arise. Jason spoke on tinnitus and industrial hearing loss, which we may face over time as we work and play. He made a point of encouraging members’ children and grandchildren to ensure that they look after their hearing at work. The talk was enjoyed by those at the meeting and the President was pleased to present Jason with a Certificate of Appreciation from Club members.
ACT Probians Linga Longa in Yarrawonga Recently, a group of combined Greenway / Conder-Lanyon (ACT) Probians enjoyed a trip titled “Linga-longa in Yarrawonga”. This was an “all-in” seven-day trip with pick-up and return to Canberra. This included all meals, transport and entertainment. A wonderful time was had by all who attended. Drought awareness The Probus Club of Kurranulla recently decided to head bush to support towns and communities dealing with the current drought in NSW. The large group headed off to Young, stopping in Yass to enjoy a seafood buffet in the park, then on down through Murrumburrah then Harden, where they dropped into the local pub to meet and hear the local bard and sculptor identity, Carl Valerius. Arriving in Young and after a comfortable night, then breakfast, the mob visited one of Young’s cherry orchards, and was given a chance to pick their own cherries (a couple picked 2kg in a short time). Young is a vibrant town of around 11,000 people and is a centre for many small rural towns, with some of those towns showing the effects of the current drought. They also stopped in Cowra, where members viewed the beautifully kept Rose Garden and Japanese Garden, and heard a talk from the Vice President of the CWA about the plight of those in drought-stricken areas.
Shear joy Eighteen members of Corowa Wahgunyah Probus Club attended a walk around the Redlands Hill Reserve accompanied by Sally Hughes from Landcare, who pointed out the various vegetation and wildlife there. This was followed by a picnic lunch in the old shed, which was used in the re-enactment of the famous Tom Roberts painting “The Shearing of the Rams” in a parade in Corowa in 2001 celebrating 100 years since Federation. The Tom Roberts painting was done in a shearing shed opposite the reserve, but unfortunately it had been destroyed.
Christmas feast The Meadowbank Combined Probus Club enjoys a special Christmas Lunch together every year and this year 54 of them refused to let the haze and smoke from the bushfires around Sydney spoil the Fun and Friendship of a great Christmas get-together. Everybody had a three-course lunch with ham, pork, turkey, traditional vegetables and sauces, plum pudding and custard, and either Scottish shortbread or Swiss chocolates as a present to enjoy later. It was a wonderful afternoon.
Through the haze Smoke from the fires blanketed Sydney Harbour as 27 members of Como Jannali Probus Club enjoyed a great day out. Two trains and a ferry (only $2.50!) brought them to Luna Park, Milson Point, before the group meandered around the beautiful foreshore of Lavender Bay, exclaiming over the variety of plants and the fascinating little statuettes. Then to the delights of Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden where an abundance of walkways wander through an idyllic landscape. What an amazing and wonderful project. Club news/ New South Wales Cherry on top Cherrybrook Combined Probus Club’s very active walking group recently arranged a weekend away to Kiama. After meeting at Vineyard, the group drove down to Kiama. Over two days a range of walks were undertaken, including scaling Mount Minnamurra and a brisk walk around the coastline. Lots of hilarity and wit, with a poet among the group writing a very good account of the trip filled with many memorable moments. Cherrybrook Combined Probus Club is now 20 years old and offers many different activity groups, sport and social occasions for members to participate in – keeping mentally and physically active and engaged in retirement.
Ron recognised Forest Belrose Probus Club President Terry Waterer recommended Ron Furness for Life Membership at the Management Committee and, after unanimous approval by the Committee, the decision was put to the November 2019 meeting – and the members applauded the decision. Ron was a Founding Member of the Forest Belrose Probus Club, and indeed was a member of the Rotary club that initiated this Probus Club. He has been on the Management Committee continuously in a variety of roles – currently as Membership Officer. He becomes the first ever Life Member of the Club. Secretary Deb Gowenlock presented Ron with his Life Member badge, and Vice President Peter O’Reilly presented Ron with his certificate.
Life Member John Mullard was made a Life Member of the Combined Probus Club of Cardiff Inc in December. An outstanding Club member who joined in 2006, John, since becoming Vice President in 2008, President in 2009 and Immediate Past President in 2010, has served continuously on the Management Committee and, as such, is in his 12th year on Committee. In 2016 he was the first recipient of the President’s Award for his service and dedication to the Club. John is a highly respected, thorough gentleman and a most worthy recipient.
Cruisin’ together Fun, Friendship and Fellowship are the themes of Probus and there were huge quantities of all three on the Probus Club of Toukley’s recent cruise to New Caledonia. Eleven members participated and had a great time, visiting the ports of Noumea, Lifou and Isle of Pines. They travelled aboard the Royal Caribbean ship Radiance of the Seas. The accommodation was very comfortable, the food magnificent and the staff very friendly and wonderful. The Club really could not say a bad thing about the whole experience. To the Rescue The Ladies Probus Club of Charlestown attended a function at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Base at Broadmeadow in Newcastle, NSW. They were treated to a lunch and tour of the base. 45 and counting The Probus Club movement (the social arm of Rotary) was established in the South Pacific region on November 5, 1974 in the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand and then in Hunters Hill, NSW, Australia in 1976. To celebrate the 45th anniversary of Probus in the South Pacific, the Probus Club of Coffs City Inc and the Coffs Harbour Combined Probus Club Inc arranged a celebratory get-together on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. A coach was arranged for 48 members of both Clubs who then travelled from Coffs Harbour to Yamba where they boarded the ferry MV Mirigini service to Iluka for lunch at the Iluka Bowls Club.

Deck the Halls On the first night of the Probus Club of Maroondah Inc’s 24th Cabins and Caravans trip to Halls Gap, members enjoyed a spit roast and were entertained by the ukulele duo of Harry Bell and John Carson, who encouraged all to sing along with them. The week went by so quickly – walks, bowls, bocce, golf, cycling and, of course, trips to nearby towns and the many wonderful sights in the Grampians. Each day was finished with a happy hour, and either dinner at some of the good restaurants in Halls Gap, or a barbecue at the Caravan Park. The Grampians are an amazingly beautiful area to visit and there is so much to do and see while there.

Historic cottage visit On a lovely sunny day in November, the Probus Club of Donvale Hill Incorporated joined with members from the Kerrimuir Probus Club Incorporated on a visit to Schramm’s Cottage in East Doncaster. The cottage is a historical gem in the City of Manningham that was built by a German pioneer school teacher and orchardist in 1874. The visit included a guided tour of the cottage and surrounding grounds, outbuildings and small cemetery. Afterwards, members treated themselves to a lovely afternoon tea, enjoying cakes, coffee, and chatting with both old friends and new friends met on the day.

Dorothy was born on November 8, 1919 and joined the Club on June 25, 2003. Dorothy cut a birthday cake made by fellow member Margaret Broadbent, who joined the Club on September 13, 2000 – the year the Club was formed. Members sang Happy Birthday to Dorothy and presented her with flowers and a card made specially by fellow member Irena Novak. A bottle of Andrew Peace wine labelled “Dorothy” was gifted to Dorothy by Vice President Leon Sherwood.
Two decades of Friendship On Thursday, October 31, 2019, Greenhills Mixed Probus Club celebrated the formation of the Club 20 years ago at a luncheon held at Bridges Restaurant in Hurstbridge. There was plenty of mirth from members watching the PowerPoint show of activities and antics of members over the 20-year period. Nearly 100 members attended, including several Foundation Members and 15 Past Presidents, headed by inaugural President Joyce Hart – now 101 years of age and still attending regular meetings. President Mary Roe reflected on the Club’s past and remarked on the firm friendships that had formed over the years. Mary then invited Joyce Hart to cut the cake.

Good Mornington to all Members of the Inala Combined Club of Blackburn South enjoyed a day on the Mornington Peninsula with a visit to a rose garden, a ride in a gondola to the top of Arthurs Seat, and a barbecue lunch with spectacular views of Port Phillip Bay.
Hat tricks
Something fishy This 11-metre-long Murray cod near the Swan Hill train station lured in a Probus Club to capture this quick snap. What a catch this giant cod made! It had reeled in 27 members of the Dingley Central Probus Club while they were touring the Silo Art Trail. These Probians travelled through the Wimmera and Mallee districts of Victoria and visited small towns such as Rupanyup, Sheep Hills, Patchewollock, Sea Lake and Lascelles and admired the amazing large scale portraits painted on silos. When their coach driver arrived at Swan Hill, the giant Murray cod caught their attention for a photo opportunity. It was at that moment the Murray cod had them “hook, line and sinker”!
Traralgon Combined Probus Club recently celebrated its farewell to 2019 and welcome to 2020. The “Crazy Hat” theme was well received and provided much laughter and frivolity. Each guest told the story of their hat and how the idea materialised. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves. A game of charades followed, as well as dancing and karaoke. (Don’t think any members will be joining a choir anytime soon.) A big thank you to all those who attended and for making the evening such a fun night.
35 great years for Mount Eliza The Probus Club of Mount Eliza Inc recently celebrated it 35th anniversary at its meeting in November. The meeting was well attended with a morning tea enjoyed by all.
Remembrance at the silo The Probus Club of St Leonards Caravan and Cabin Club recently completed a five-day trip based at Euroa, with a day devoted to the North East Victoria Silo Trail, visiting silos at Goorambat, Devenish, St James and Tungamah. The members also visited “Sophia” at Goorambat and the water tanks at the Winton Wetlands. The 28 members were fortunate to arrive at the Devenish Silo (pictured) at exactly 11am on November 11, to pay their respects to the men and women who served their country. Glyn Williams of the Probus Club of Attadale pens a tribute to a fellow Club member, the late Richard Lawrence Hill.
I
f I had not joined Probus I would not have become a friend of the bravest man I have ever met – and that includes one who was awarded the Victoria Cross. Richard Lawrence Hill was relatively young, blessed with a fine mind, and had great and special
skills that were still flowering at the time of his death. In the 13 years that he was with the Probus Club of Attadale he revealed his ability and his many gifts, like the skins of an onion, a man who would not be deterred or underestimated because he was in a wheelchair, and a paraplegic. Ric was diagnosed as a child with muscular spinal atrophy, a genetic motor neuron disease characterised by wasting of the skeletal muscles, which affects the voluntary muscles for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control and swallowing. At the basis of his being was his creativity that was reinforced by a mind trained in the growing world of hi-tech and an affinity with finance that launched his parents’ business into the computer world. He gave freely of his multiple talents to the Club electronically with photography and CDs and then taking on willingly and without hesitation the challenge of editor of the Club Bulletin. There were many in the Club who believed the task would be beyond him, given his lack of normal limb movements, but I believed differently and successfully convinced one Club President, Frank Cocks, that Ric would overcome the obvious problems: silently I pledged my own mobility in support whenever it was needed. Arguably in quality, in his record four years as editor, it became the best in the state, perhaps Australia. He polished his techniques to become a master in the art of page make-up. In committee, he was lively, proactive, insightful, and never shirked yet another imposition asked of him. Those who attended his talk at a general meeting could well agree that it was the most inspirational they had ever heard.

“There was a brilliance to this man, who had so many friends, admirers and supporters in many walks of life; his funeral service was a packed tribute to a life well lived and indeed for the good of others” During that talk he said that one of his worst moments came when a grandmother, who had given him physical and morale help all her life, died just after she became a centenarian. In his later years he was supported by a much-loved wife, Heather. There was a brilliance to this man, who had so many friends, admirers and supporters in many walks of life. His funeral service was a packed tribute to a life well lived and indeed for the good of others. His reputation lives on, far beyond the annals of his historic Club. Outside Probus was another Ric, bursting with energy and enterprise, giving himself and his intellect to the organisation for people with disabilities, Melville Cares (two years as Chairman), as councillor for Melville City (the entire staff turned out in tribute when his cortége passed through the civic centre), with BaptistCare, and WANDA, the organisation he set up to campaign for disability rights. Like many others I still miss Ric, a quite extraordinary and positive man, with an unquenchable spirit, indeed the bravest man I have ever met. l
