Moore paces Bulldogs by Tennessee Wesleyan The Citadel 87, Tennessee Wesleyan 60 (Exhibition) Staff report Sunday, October 30, 2011 Guard Ashton Moore scored a game-high 21 points behind six 3-pointers as The Citadel earned an 87-60 exhibition win Tennessee Wesleyan at McAlister Field House on Saturday. Moore was one of five double-figure scorers, along with Mike Groselle (15 points, 13 rebounds), DeVontae Wright (13), Lawrence Miller (12) and Cosmo Morabbi (10 points). The Bulldogs capped off the victory by hitting 31 of 59 from the floor, including 14 of 30 from beyond the arc. The freshman tandem of Moore (6 of 10) and Miller (4 of 7) paved the way for 14 3-pointers. Morrabi knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Groselle crashed the boards for 13 rebounds, while Jordan Robertson finished with seven to help the Bulldogs to a 48-28 rebounding edge. The Bulldogs led 52-27 at halftime. “I am pleased with the entire effort of the team,” said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. “We play these games to try and find out where we are defensively, and in terms of our offensive execution after two weeks of practice and we did a really nice job tonight. Moore played an outstanding game, but everybody played an outstanding game. “Moore stood out because he is really smooth and under control, but more importantly because he was knocking down shots.” Desmond Crisp had 17 points for Tennessee Wesleyan, which held to 20-of-53 shooting. The Clemson Tigers defeated The Citadel Bulldogs, 73-50, at McAlister Field House on Wednesday night. "It's funny," said Clemson junior Milton Jennings, who scored 10 points to go with 14 by Devin Booker and 11 by Tanner Smith. Tigers tonight." Driesell can only hope his young Citadel (1-2) team, which played six freshmen against Clemson, can one day approximate the Tigers' tenacious 'D'. Coach Brad Brownell's Tigers (2-0) used sticky man defense and superior length to block 11 shots, make six steals and force 16 Citadel turnovers on the way to an 18-point halftime lead and 33-point margin in the second half. The Citadel made just 16 of 63 shots (30.2 percent). Take away junior center Mike Groselle's 7 of 13 for 16 points, and the rest of the squad was 12 of 50. "They really put us on our heels, and we never really got into an offensive flow at all," said Driesell, whose team had averaged 91.5 points and shot 51.7 percent in its first two games. "It was frustrating and disappointing that we didn't handle their pressure better. I thought we would, so we've got some work to do." Brownell was pleased with his team's defensive intensity, but will highlight Clemson's boxouts (The Citadel had 16 offensive rebounds), especially against the 6-8 Groselle, in the film room. Groselle became the third Citadel player to post four straight double-doubles with 16 points and 11 rebounds. "We call him a blue-collar worker," said Jennings, from Summerville's Pinewood Prep. "He wasn't given a lot of athletic ability, but he works so hard and is patient. He waits for the right time to duck you in, and if he gets any angle, he's going to score the ball." Clemson, which won its 14th straight over the Bulldogs, got some good work from young players, as freshman guard T.J. Sapp scored seven points with six rebounds, three steals and two assists. "He did some good things, made a shot, got a steal, made some nice passes in transition," Brownell said. "He's certainly further along than the other freshmen, and he's got the opportunity to play with some older players." Clemson was playing at The Citadel for the first time since 1989. The Bulldogs hung with the Tigers for the first 12 minutes, trailing 16-12 at 8:18 after a layup by Groselle. Additional coverage Clemson Tigers But Clemson blocked three shots and forced 10 Citadel turnovers in the first 20 minutes, fueling a 23-9 run to end the half with a 39-21 lead. Smith hit a 3-pointer and threw a sweet bounce pass to Booker for a dunk during that stretch. The Citadel missed 10 straight shots in the second half and Clemson went on a 27-7 run to extend the lead to 66-33.

Dogs hope to 'Pack the Mac' for Clemson By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Wednesday, November 16, 2011 When someone floated the idea of a TV commercial to promote The Citadel's home game with Clemson tonight, Bulldogs coach Chuck Driesell knew exactly where to turn. ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt, like Driesell a Maryland alum, has starred in many of the network's funniest spots.

Bryan Oller/AP The Citadel's Mike Groselle is averaging 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds after two games. "I've always loved his commercials, and whenever I saw him we'd talk about them," Driesell said Tuesday. "So when we thought about doing that, I said, 'We've got to play off something they did.' " The 30-second commercial, which has been playing on local TV and can be found on youtube.com, does have that wacky ESPN sensibility. Driesell is in his office, watching game tape with Citadel mascot Spike the Bulldog. "Hey, where's that tape from Clemson?" Driesell demands. "I want to see that new tape from Clemson."

The office door opens to reveal Clemson's Tiger mascot, who hands over the tape. "Oh hey, Tiger, thanks, this will help a lot," Driesell says as Spike shakes a finger in the Tiger's face. "It was a lot of fun to do," said Driesell, in his second year at The Citadel. "But I really hope it works. We'd like to see a full house when they come in, and I haven't seen one since I've been here." Tonight's game at McAlister Field House is Clemson's first game at The Citadel since a 7154 victory in 1989, and only the fourth time an ACC team has visited McAlister since 1980. "It doesn't happen that often, where a team like Clemson will come play a team like us on the road," Driesell said. "So we're excited about it." That dynamic might be changing a little. South Carolina played Tuesday night at Elon's tiny 1,000-seat gym. Other Southern Conference teams will get visits from Virginia Commonwealth, Vanderbilt, Tulane and Tennessee this season. "Some of that has to do with strength of schedule," Driesell said. "Teams that are on the borderline of getting in the NCAA tournament, they look at where you played. Did you take on the road, even to places like ours, rather than staying at home all the time? That's what the NCAA has tried to promote, and that's helped a little bit with scheduling." Citadel players who remember last year's 69-54 loss at Clemson are eager to get a shot at the Tigers (1-0) at home. "It's one of our biggest games of the year," said junior center Mike Groselle, who is averaging 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds after two games. "Everyone on campus has been talking about it, and I think a lot of them will come out. It will probably be the biggest crowd we have all year." Clemson has undergone major changes from last year's team, which won an NCAA tournament game. The Tigers lost their top two scorers in Demontez Stitt and Jerai Grant, but return senior guard Andre Young and junior forward Milton Jennings of Summerville's Pinewood Prep. Young scored 19 points to lead the Tigers in their season opener, a 65-44 win over GardnerWebb. Tonight's game also will be the first chance for Citadel fans to see some of the changes at McAlister Field House, including a refinished and repainted court and new VIP courtside seats. The Bulldogs' locker room also has undergone renovation. --Tonight's game will be live-streamed on ESPN3.com. Former Citadel announcer Darren Goldwater will do the play-by-play ... Wright's big game lifts Bulldogs Staff report Sunday, November 13, 2011 AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The Citadel rallied from 20 points down for an 83-72 victory over Army on Saturday night in the third-place game of the All-Military Classic at the Air Force Academy. DeVontae Wright, a sophomore from Goose Creek High, scored a career-best 26 points to lead the Bulldogs (1-1), who lost, 103-100, to VMI in Friday night's tournament opener. Mike Groselle registered his second double-double in two games with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Bo Holston added 12 points. Wright hit 9 of 12 shots from the field and all eight of his free throws, with no turnovers in 21 minutes, after struggling in the opener against VMI. "He was really upset by how he played the other night against VMI," said coach Chuck Driesell. "This was a good game for him, and I expect him to build on this." The Bulldogs trailed Army (0-2) by 20 points in the first half and by 12 at halftime, but dominated the second half. "We got off to a terrible start," Driesell said. "But this is one of the best wins I've been associated with. They came out in the second half as a completely different basketball team." A jumper by Wright gave The Citadel the lead at 59-57 with 11:58 to play, and the Bulldogs led 63-57 with 10:58 left. A 7-0 run by Army put the Black Knights up 64-63 on a 3-pointer by Jason Pancoe. But the Bulldogs took off on a 9-0 run from there, with Groselle hitting two free throws, Wright slicing in for a layup, Holston draining a 3-pointer and Cosmo Morabbi canning a jumper for a 72-64 lead with 4:44 left. The Citadel plays its home opener Wednesday against Clemson, and will host the AllMilitary Classic next year. Copyright Š 1995 - 2011 Evening Post Publishing Co..

Air Force men's hoops excited to host first All-Military Classic FRANK SCHWAB 2011-11-09 18:15:38

The idea of having a men's basketball tournament among military schools has been around since Jeff Bzdelik was Air Force’s coach. Bzdelik moved on to Colorado, and then Wake Forest, but Jeff Reynolds kept the idea alive. The problem was getting four schools together to play basketball on the same weekend was a terribly complicated puzzle to solve, especially as coaches changed at the other institutions. Last year it finally started to come together. Navy couldn’t participate because of contractual obligations, but Air Force, Army, The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute were in. The coaches of the four teams met at the Final Four in March, and over breakfast they put the final touches on the All-Military Classic, which will be Friday and Saturday at Clune Arena. For Reynolds, the event will be a source of pride. “It has been something in the works for a long time,” Reynolds said. “I’m glad it came together.” Air Force plays Army on Friday at 7:30 p.m., then VMI and Citadel will play at 10. The third-place game tips off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and the championship game will follow. Air Force is the first host of the AllMilitary Classic – a nod to the work Reynolds did to put it together – and the other three institutions will have a chance to host the event once over the next three years. The late starts Friday this year were for a good reason. The games were picked up by CBS Sports Network, meaning a very rare game on national television for VMI and The Citadel. “I’d have played at midnight,” Citadel coach Chuck Driesell said. Being on national television is beyond what Reynolds could have hoped for when he was simply trying to get everyone to join. When Reynolds took over as head coach in 2007, he started his crusade and found that it was going to take some juggling. “It’s extremely hard to get four guys with openings together,” Reynolds said. What kept him going was the other coaches were interested, especially new coaches like Army’s Zach Spiker (hired in October 2009) and Driesell (hired in April 2010). “Any time you have Division I basketball competition going on between teams at academies like these, VMI and The Citadel, who develop leaders beyond sports, I think it’s very special,” Spiker said. The teams thought it would be appropriate to hold the event on Veterans Day weekend, which is the first weekend of the college basketball season. Duggar Baucom, VMI’s coach since 2005, has been good friends with Reynolds for years. VMI doesn’t like to travel far – this will be VMI’s second plane flight as a team for a road game under Baucom – but Baucom knew this event was worth it.

Dogs' Driesell: Almost feels like my first year Driesell: Almost feels like first year By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Tuesday, November 8, 2011 Preparing for his second season as The Citadel's basketball coach, Chuck Driesell can't shake this funny feeling. "It almost feels like this is my first year," Driesell said. Little wonder. Driesell has eight freshmen among the 15 players on his roster, and lost 10 players from last year's squad. The list of departed players includes the Bulldogs' all-time leader in scoring and assists (Cameron Wells) and the top two 3-point shooters in school history (Zach Urbanus and Austin Dahn). Despite the senior talent, the Bulldogs were just 10-22 overall and 6-12 in the Southern Conference in Driesell's first season, another reason he might prefer to think of this season as his first. "I inherited a program with so many seniors who were set in a certain way," Driesell said. "And when they left, we lost some really good players. It's like starting over." Driesell is not starting from scratch, however. He has a proven inside scorer to build around in 6-8 junior center Mike Groselle, who averaged 11.5 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, shooting 60.1 percent from the field. Groselle played 24.4 minutes per game last year, and should be prepared to play more this season. "Mike did a tremendous job this summer getting in great physical condition," Driesell said. "He can play longer and harder at a position that he's proven he's pretty good at, and can be on the floor longer without getting fatigued." Groselle has also worked hard to expand his shooting range, which didn't extend much farther than five feet or so last year. "People will have to step out there on him from 15 feet and in," Driesell said. "That will help him and help us offensively." Filling in around Groselle will be more problematic. Senior guard Cosmo Morabbi and

redshirt junior forward Bo Holston have the most experience, but were role players on the Wells-Urbanus-Dahn teams. Sophomores Devontae Wright (from Goose Creek High School) and Barry Smith also will have a chance to expand their roles. "We've got some guys who were in the shadows of those seniors," Driesell said. "Now is their chance to be in the spotlight." To sign a class of eight freshmen, Citadel brass told Driesell and his coaches it was OK to bust the recruiting budget. "And we did," Driesell said. Citadel coaches traveled from New Jersey (6-7 swingman Dylan Setzekorn) to New Mexico (6-8 forward P.J. Horgan) and even to James Island (6-8 forward C.J. Bray) to sign this class, and many freshmen will have to contribute right away. Freshman guard Ashton Moore scored a team-high 21 points in the Bulldogs' exhibition game, while freshman guard Lawrence Miller chipped in 12. Jordan Robertson, a 6-7 forward, had seven rebounds. Bray, guard Marshall Harris and Horgan were other freshmen who played in the exhibition. The knobs will be tested early. The Citadel opens the season Friday against high-scoring VMI at the All-Military Classic at Air Force, then faces Clemson in the home opener Nov. 16 at McAlister Field House. Jimmie Guyton is Bulldogs' new guy behind the mic Staff report Friday, November 4, 2011

Jimmie Guyton After hearing 30 auditions from interested individuals in the Charleston community, The Citadel named Jimmie Guyton as its new public address announcer for Bulldogs basketball. Guyton's hire caps a two-week search, during which potential announcers had the opportunity to try out Oct. 24 at McAlister Field House. The Summerville native worked for nine years as a private disc jockey, and he has experience working as a public address announcer, most recently for softball and volleyball events at Ashley Ridge High School. Prior to that, Guyton served as the PA announcer for Fort Dorchester High School softball games. Guyton is a plant safety specialist for Alcoa in Goose Creek. "I am very excited about this opportunity that I have been given," said Guyton. "I've been told for years to try and do this, but I didn't have the time in my schedule. It was one of those things that the opportunity opened the door at the right time for me, so I am looking forward to this. I give my daughters, Amber and Chelsea, a lot of credit for pushing me to try out for this at The Citadel." The Citadel's first home basketball game is Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. against Clemson. Groselle, a 6-8 junior, scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, and sophomore forward Barry Smith scored 19 in his first start of the season. The Citadel romped to a 97-44 victory Florida Christian at McAlister Field House on Monday night. The Bulldogs shot 55.4 percent from the field and made 9 of 24 from 3-point range, a relief after they struggled to score in a 73-50 loss to Clemson. "Felt really good," said Smith, who hit 8 of 15 shots. "This was definitely a confidence boost for some of our younger guys. They got to play a lot and have some success."

That's the idea when you schedule a team like Florida Christian, a school of 325 students from Kissimmee, Fla., and a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The 2-5 Suns are one of two non-Division I teams on the Bulldogs' schedule this year; The Citadel hosts Virginia-Wise on Jan. 2, just before the rigors of the Southern Conference slate set in. "We like to schedule two games like this every year, one early and one after the Christmas break," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell, who registered his 100th career victory. "It helps us find out where we're at, get ourselves better and prepare for what is ahead of us. "For us, this game was perfect timing, because we have so many new faces." Six freshmen played for the Bulldogs, but none started for the first time this season. Driesell went small with the 6-6 wingman Smith starting for the 6-7 Bray, with 6-4 Bo Holston at the big forward. "Defense," Driesell said in explaining the switch. "I've told these guys, the best defenders will play, and that's Barry right now. He's quick and he's long and he's a good rebounder." Extra work pays off for Groselle Citadel center: 'I want to win' By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Saturday, November 26, 2011 Most mornings last summer, Mike Groselle rode his bike to Johnson Hagood Stadium, stood at the bottom of the stairs and took a deep breath. And then he started running.

Photo by Tyrone Walker The Citadel's Mike Groselle makes a pass over Florida Christian defenders. Up the steps to the top of The Citadel's football stadium, then back down. At the bottom of the stairs, Groselle would jump rope 100 times, then do 10 situps and 10 pushups. Then it was on to the next staircase, up and down, 100 jump ropes, 10 situps and 10 pushups. "There are 10 staircases on the home side and eight on the visiting side," said Groselle, who should know. That's thousands of steps, 1,800 jump ropes, 180 situps and 180 pushups in the morning -followed by lunch, then a strength and conditioning workout with The Citadel's basketball team, then a pickup game and a 5 p.m. engineering class. All of which begs the question -- why?

"I was really disappointed with last season," said Groselle, a 6-8, 238-pound junior center from Plano, Texas. "So I decided to stay here all summer and work out. I want to win, and that's all I care about." The Bulldogs are 2-2 heading into tonight's game at High Point, and it's plain to see that Groselle's grueling offseason workouts are paying off double. Groselle's 19 points and 11 rebounds in Monday's 97-44 win over Florida Christian marked his fifth straight double-digit performance in points and rebounds, making him the first Bulldog since at least 1974 with five double-doubles in a row. For the season, Groselle is averaging 19 points and 10.8 rebounds while shooting 69 percent from the field. At the All-Military Classic at Air Force to start the season, he put up two double-doubles in one day, playing 68 of a possible 80 minutes -- at altitude -- while scoring 25 points with 11 rebounds in a loss to VMI, and 16 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Army. He won the Southern Conference's first player of the week award of the season. "I can tell a difference from last year," he said. "I think I'm a little quicker at getting rebounds, maybe from all those stairs and the jumping rope. Last year, I could play about two minutes in a row. Now I think I can play eight solid minutes without needing a sub." Clemson coach Brad Brownell was impressed after watching Groselle make 7 of 13 shots in 37 minutes against his Tigers. "He's a tough-minded kid," Brownell said. "There's a lot to like with him. He gets the most out of his ability. He proves you don't have to be a great athlete to be a good player. "He posts very hard and demands the ball, he plays with good poise around the basket and he is a relentless rebounder. He makes a lot of plays below the basket." Citadel coach Chuck Driesell said the Bulldogs should have gotten the ball to Groselle more often against Clemson. "We have to do a better job of getting Mike the ball," he said. "Clemson broke us down and didn't let us get into position to get the ball to him. But Mike was out there battling every minute of the game. He's really good around the basket, and he'll continue to get better." Today's Game Who: The Citadel (2-2) at High Point (1-3) When: 7 p.m. Where: Millis Center, High Point, N.C. After sinking a jumper with 2 seconds left to send the contest into overtime at 65-all, The Citadel's Marshall Harris hit one of two foul shots to give the Bulldogs a one-point lead. It would be their last. Xavier Martin, who led the Panthers (2-3) with 21 points, hit one of two foul shots and converted a three-point play to push High Point back on top, 69-66. Lawrence Miller's jumper pulled the Bulldogs back within one, but Barbour took over from there. He sank seven free throws and connected on a 3 in the final 2:26 to seal it. "I am very impressed with the way that (our players) handled themselves. I was very pleased with their effort tonight," Citadel coach Chuck Driesell said. "They were given a few chances tonight to pack it in, but they didn't, and instead they chose to grind it out." Mike Groselle posted his sixth straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead The Citadel (2-3). Corey Law had 13 points and 15 rebounds for High Point. The Bulldogs are at College of Charleston on Thursday. "We have to play hard defensively, because we can't allow someone who is averaging five points a game come in and score 20 points against us," Driesell said. "Xavier Martin got 20 points on us and I give him a lot of credit because he did an outstanding job. But, we have got to do a better job of not allowing someone, who is making baskets be able to beat us." Copyright Š 1995 - 2011 Evening Post Publishing Co..

Rivals open SoCon schedule C of C, Citadel square off today at TD Arena By Tommy Braswell <a href="mailto:braswell@postandcourier.com">braswell@postandcourier.com</a> Thursday, December 1, 2011 History and comparative schedules favor the College of Charleston when the Cougars take on The Citadel at 8 p.m. today at TD Arena. The College of Charleston (5-1) has won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs (2-3) and holds a 47-39 overall advantage in the series that began in 1901.

Photo by Tyrone Walker Citadel players will be fired up today as the underdog Bulldogs open SoCon play at rival College of Charleston (8 p.m., WMMP-TV). The teams' only common opponent thus far is Clemson. The Tigers rolled to a 73-50 win over The Citadel at McAlister Field House. Three days later, the Cougars got off to a fast start and hung on for a 72-69 win at Clemson. But the fact that the game is a battle between crosstown rivals and also the Southern Conference opener for both schools puts a much different spin on the game. It's early in the season, but the game could set the tone for the season for both schools. "It's going to be a tough game. It's always a tough game every time we play The Citadel," said College of Charleston junior guard Andrew Lawrence. "We look forward to it. It should be a great atmosphere. "They're going to come in and give us the best they've got. We have to be ready." Said Citadel junior center Mike Groselle, who is averaging 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds a game, both tops in the Southern Conference: "It's at their place. It's usually pretty packed.

It's for bragging rights until we play them next. Every game it seems like we're playing better and better together." The Bulldogs certainly have the respect of College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins, who praised Groselle and noted that the Bulldogs lost in overtime at High Point, a team that lost by two points at Purdue. "That tells me The Citadel has some talent, and I know they'll be ready to play," said Cremins. "There are no easy games in our league. It's a rivalry, but more importantly it's a conference game. The Citadel had some great wins in the conference last year. They went up to Davidson and beat Davidson. That was a great win." Citadel coach Chuck Driesell is trying not to put too much emphasis on the game, working on the philosophy that the next game on the schedule is the most important and it just happens to be against the College of Charleston. "Coach Cremins has them going again this year," Driesell said. "We're going to have to play well to win."

Cougars polish off Citadel By Tommy Braswell <a href="mailto:braswell@postandcourier.com">braswell@postandcourier.com</a> Originally published 10:03 p.m., December 1, 2011 Updated 11:04 p.m., December 1, 2011 On a night when a student hit a halfcourt shot to win 20 pizzas, the College of Charleston had trouble buying 3-pointers. But the Cougars caught fire late in the first half and rolled to an 83-64 victory over The Citadel before a sellout crowd of 5,101 Thursday at TD Arena. The Cougars started the night 0-for-9 from the field, but finally got rolling late in the first half and finally wore down the Bulldogs. Charleston ended the first half shooting 48.67 percent (18 of 37) and was 37 of 74 (50 percent) for the game. Charleston's biggest lead was 21 points. Much of the game focused on a battle between the team's big men, Charleston's Trent Wiedeman and The Citadel's Mike Groselle, and both 6-8 players performed well. Groselle, who going into the game led the Southern Conference in scoring (18.2) and rebounding (11.2), did nothing to tarnish his stock. He finished with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Wiedeman scored a personal best 22 points and had 10 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season and sixth of his career. Antwaine Wiggins started 0 for 6 from 3-point distance and didn't hit a 3 until 4:25 was left in the game. Wiggins scored 20 points and had four rebounds. Andrew Lawrence had 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Freshman Anthony Stitt finished with 10 points and four rebounds. C.J. Bray, Ashton Moore and Barry Smith each scored 10 points for The Citadel. Charleston's biggest lead was 21. After a see-saw first 15 minutes, the Cougars broke out to a 34-27 lead only to see The Citadel go on a 6-0 burst to cut Charleston's lead to one. But the Cougars ended the half on a 7-0 run for a 41-33 halftime lead. The teams do not meet again until Feb. 25, the final regular-season game, at McAlister Field House. Charleston next faces Chattanooga at 4 p.m. Saturday at TD Arena while The Citadel travels to Wofford Saturday at 3 p.m. See Friday's editions of The Post and Courier for more. Wofford coasts past Bulldogs WOFFORD 82, THE CITADEL 63 Staff report Sunday, December 4, 2011 SPARTANBURG -- Wofford entered Saturday's game with The Citadel struggling to shoot and score, but found a cure for both problems in an 82-63 win over the Bulldogs. Senior guard Kevin Giltner scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Terriers improved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference basketball. The Citadel has lost three straight and is 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the SoCon. Senior Mike Groselle scored 13 points for the Bulldogs, but his string of consecutive doubledoubles was snapped at seven. He finished with five rebounds, and freshman guard Ashton Moore also scored 13 points. Wofford came in averaging 58 points and shooting 26.4 percent on 3-point shots, both worst in the SoCon. But with the 6-6 Giltner hitting 4 of 8 from 3-point range, the Terriers posted a season high in points and made 9 of 23 from long distance. Guards Brad Loesing and Karl Cochran scored 16 and 13 points, respectively, for Wofford. "I give them credit, but we contributed to them playing well," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. "We did not come out ready, we did not come out with the energy and focus that we have had." The Terriers built a 17-point lead in the first half before settling for a 40-25 margin at halftime. The Bulldogs got the lead down to nine on a Lawrence Miller 3-point play with 13:57 left in the game. But Wofford's Lee Skinner scored twice during a 9-2 run that stretched the lead to 17, and the Terriers cruised from there. Groselle, the SoCon's top scorer at 18.5 points per game, got only seven shots from the field and made four. "Our guards were tentative, passing up shots they normally take," Driesell said. "People are going to double down on Mike, and our guards have to have the confidence to take those shots and relieve pressure on him." The Citadel plays host to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. Bulldogs brace for once-beaten Chanticleers By Jeff Hartsell jhartsell@postandcourier.com Tuesday, December 6, 2011 The Citadel staged an all-out "Pack the Mac" campaign for its home opener against in-state rival Clemson a couple of weeks ago. But an even better state team comes to McAlister Field House tonight. Indeed, Coastal Carolina (with apologies to College of Charleston) might just be be the best college basketball team in South Carolina right now.

MARK CRAMMER/AP Chris Gradnigo (left) and Big South member Coastal Carolina have sent Clemson and LSU reeling this season. "They are playing with such confidence," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. "They've really got a great chemistry and a nice flow about themselves and are playing really well together. And they are talented." Coastal coach Cliff Ellis, in his fifth year at the Conway school, has the Chanticleers off to a 7-1 start that includes victories over LSU and Clemson in a seven-day span last month.

Coastal Carolina students stormed the court at tiny Kimbel Arena after the Chants' 71-63 win over visiting LSU on Nov. 15. And Ellis, who coached at Clemson for 10 years, kissed the court at Littlejohn Coliseum before his team's 60-59 win over the Tigers on Nov. 22. "There's never been anything like this at Coastal Carolina," Ellis said after senior Chris Gradnigo's putback at the buzzer beat Clemson. "LSU and Clemson in a week, it doesn't get any better than that. It puts you on the national map." With both Clemson and South Carolina struggling, the Dec. 22 meeting between College of Charleston (7-1) and Coastal Carolina at Kimbel Arena might well determine the unofficial state champ. The Chants' two leading scorers against Clemson were both players who transferred into Coastal Carolina from other Division I programs. Junior guard Anthony Raffa played one season at Albany before coming to Coastal Carolina in 2009; he scored 21 points against Clemson and is averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game. Gradnigo, a 6-7 senior, took the unusual step of transferring from Louisiana-Lafayette after playing three seasons there. He left after a coaching change, sat out last season at CCU, and has made an immediate impact this season, averaging 16.8 points and 6 rebounds per game. He also scored 21 points against Clemson. The 2-5 Bulldogs, meanwhile, have lost three straight, the latest by 82-63 at Wofford on Saturday. Junior center Mike Groselle still ranks as the top scorer (17.7 ppg) and rebounder (11.4 rpg) in the Southern Conference, but the Bulldogs have struggled defensively. The Citadel has given up 80 or more points in each of the last three games, though High Point needed overtime to reach that mark. College of Charleston and Wofford made 69 of 132 shots (52.3 percent) in the last two games. Only two current Citadel players got minutes in last year's 72-64 loss at Coastal -- Groselle played three minutes and senior guard Cosmo Morabbi five. Coastal cruises by Bulldogs By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Wednesday, December 7, 2011 In a long and varied career, Cliff Ellis has been an author, a singer and musician, and even an ostrich farmer. But the thing that Ellis does best is coach basketball. His Coastal Carolina team gave him his 700th career victory in an 80-58 win over The Citadel on Tuesday night before 1,409 fans at McAlister Field House, and might have much bigger things in store for him. Citadel vs Coastal Carolina

The Citadel hosted Coastal Carolina, but the outcome was not what the Bulldogs wanted, with the Chanticleers taking the basketball game 80 to 58. The Chanticleers, who already own victories over LSU and Clemson, improved to 8-1 behind 28 points from junior guard Anthony Raffa and are taking dead aim at their first NCAA tournament berth since 1993. "We're going good," said Ellis, who turned 66 on Monday and is in his fifth season at Coastal Carolina after stints at Clemson and Auburn. "But it's still early and we're finding out a lot about ourselves." As are the young Bulldogs, who lost their fourth straight to fall to 2-6. Coach Chuck Driesell introduced a second freshman into his starting lineup against the Chants, with 6-8 forward P.J. Horgan joining guard Ashton Moore in the first five. But the Bulldogs could not slow down Coastal, which shot 62.5 percent in the first half

while building a 47-27 halftime lead. The Chants settled for 56.7 percent for the game, the fourth straight team to score at least 80 points against The Citadel. Raffa made 13 of 19 shots for his career-best 28. Even with forward Sam McLaurin in foul trouble and No. 2 scorer Chris Gradnigo shooting 4 of 15, Coastal riddled the Bulldogs' man-to-man defense for 42 points in the paint. Driesell ordered up a few possessions of 2-3 zone, and it's a good bet defense will dominate Citadel practices between now and a Dec. 14 visit from Charleston Southern. "I'm not really a zone guy, but we may have to go that way," Driesell said. "These guys are young enough to learn to play man-to-man defense, but we'll do whatever we have to do to win games. But we want to be a man-to-man team, and we'll continue to work on it." Coastal's interior defense, meanwhile, made things difficult for the Bulldogs' top scorer, Mike Groselle. He scored a season-low eight points on 4-of-12 shooting. "I told our guys that this would be Groselle's toughest test, because we've got pretty good big guys," said Ellis, who deployed 6-11 senior Jon Pack along with the 6-8 McLaurin and 6-7 Gradnigo on the front line. "We knew that he played well against Clemson, and we said, 'This needs to be his match.' " With Groselle blanketed, sophomore Barry Smith led the Bulldogs with 15 points, and sophomore DeVontae Wright added 10. The Citadel shot 37.7 percent and had 15 turnovers against 10 assists. The Bulldogs closed a 23-point halftime lead to 14 at 65-51 on two treys by Lawrence Miller and a fastbreak bucket by Marshall Harris. But after an Ellis timeout, Raffa drove for a bucket, scored on the break after a turnover and nailed a tough fall-away jumper. He scored six straight points and eight of nine as Coastal took a 74-54 lead. "He always does that, comes up with big plays," said Ellis, who now has 622 Division I victories. "He's just a tough, hard-nosed player." --The Citadel's Bo Holston left the game after injuring his right knee in the second half … Groselle had scored in double figures in 12 straight games dating to last season … Coastal Carolina hosts College of Charleston on Dec. 22. 3-Point Goals -- CC 4-11 (Moore 2-2, Raffa 2-4, Gillis 0-1, Griffin 0-1, Gradnigo 0-3); Citadel 9-20 (Smith 3-5, Wright 2-2, Miller 2-4, Bray 1-1, Moore 1-4, Harris 0-1, Holston 0-1, Morrabi 0-2). It was a fun night for the Buccaneers as six scored in double figures during an 88-69 rout of the Bulldogs before 1,129 fans at McAlister Field House. CSU (6-3), which has won three straight and eight of 10 against The Citadel (2-7), took advantage of the Bulldogs' porous defense to shoot 61.3 percent in the second half and 54.4 percent for the game. "Our offensive execution was terrific," said CSU coach Barclay Radebaugh, who got 19 points from freshman guard Arlon Harper and a double-double (13 points, 17 rebounds) from senior Kelvin Martin. "We shared the ball and ran down the floor with purpose.

Charleston Southern rolled to 88-69 victory over The Citadel at McAlister Field House on Wednesday night. "We got a lot of easy shots for ourselves. We didn't have to create a lot of shots; we created shots for our teammates, and I praise my team for that. They were terrific on the offensive end." Citadel coach Chuck Driesell has seen too many such performances from opposing teams. During the Bulldogs' current five-game skid, foes are averaging 82.6 points and shooting a remarkable 60.2 percent inside the 3-point arc. It's the first time The Citadel has given up 80-plus points in five straight games since 2005-06. CSU scored 44 points in the paint, following up 42 from Coastal Carolina, 34 from College of Charleston and 46 by High Point against the Bulldogs. "I was disappointed in how we defended tonight, I really was," Driesell said. "But I think these guys are too, and that's a good sign." The Bulldogs tried some 2-3 zone, but CSU shot 9 of 21 from 3-point range to nullify that strategy. Playing at a relatively quick pace (68 shots for each team), the Bulldogs allowed 1.29 points per possession. By comparison, VMI is allowing 1.24 points per possession this season, worst in Division I. "It's five guys working together -- it's not just one guy," Driesell said. "That's something we've got to learn, that it's team defense, not just individual defense." The Bulldogs are trying to pressure the ball, but made only four steals while forcing just 11 CSU turnovers. Said center Mike Groselle: "Teams are getting some uncontested drives on us. We're not really protecting the paint, and teams are getting a lot of points in the paint. It's the team's responsibility. It's not one individual making a bad play, it's the team. We've got to put more effort into defense than offense." The Bulldogs, led by 18 points from Ashton Moore, actually played some of their best ball of the season for the first 15 minutes, taking a 33-26 lead. But as CSU turned up the heat in its press and 1-3-1 trap, the Bulldogs crumbled down the stretch, missing all seven shots with six turnovers during a 17-0 CSU run to end the half and turn the game. "They ended up just playing harder for us," said Groselle, who had 15 points. "They came at us, and we backed down."

Paladins bury Bulldogs with 3s Staff report Friday, January 6, 2012 FURMAN 77, THE CITADEL 45 GREENVILLE -- Before Thursday night's game at Furman, Citadel basketball coach Chuck Driesell said the Bulldogs' plan was to make the Paladins beat them from outside. Furman did just that, raining in a season-high 13 shots from 3-point range during a 77-45 rout of the Bulldogs at Timmons Arena.

File The Citadel Guards Bobby Austin and Dominic Early, both reserves, combined to go 9 of 14 from 3point range, Austin scoring 17 points and Early 14 to lead Furman (7-7, 1-2 Southern Conference). Cosmo Morabbi scored 14 points and Mike Groselle 10 for the Bulldogs (3-11, 0-3), who were outscored 36-12 to end the game. The Citadel's 45 points were its fewest of the season, the 32-point margin of defeat the largest. It was The Citadel's worst loss to Furman since a 91-59 rout in 1974. "A lot of inconsistent basketball tonight," Driesell said. "Forty-five points, and we've been averaging close to 70. We've got a young group of guys. I keep saying that, but it's true. We've got to be more consistent on offense." Freshman guard Ashton Moore, who scored a career-high 30 points in a win over VirginiaWise on Monday, was held to four points on 2-of-13 shooting by Furman. Moore wasn't alone. The Bulldogs shot 38 percent from the field, made just 2 of 11 from 3-

point range and turned the ball over 18 times. Meanwhile, Furman snapped a three-game skid by shooting 62 percent in the second half, making 13 of its last 17 shots. The Paladins opened the game with a 10-0 run and closed the first half with a 19-4 spurt for a 35-19 halftime lead. Bulldogs' defense a work in progress By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Thursday, January 5, 2012 After Coastal Carolina guard Anthony Raffa racked up 28 points in an 80-58 win over The Citadel a month ago, a Chanticleers fan offered congratulations. "Open lanes," Raffa said. "When they are there, you gotta take 'em."

File/Aaron Ontiveroz/AP The Citadel defense, including Ashton Moore (right) and Mike Groselle, will face lowscoring Furman today. As demonstrated in a 91-74 victory over NAIA member Virginia-Wise on Monday, the Bulldogs are still working to clog those lanes. Their success in doing so will play a big role in determining the fate of a young Citadel team as a stretch of 16 straight Southern Conference games begins tonight at Furman. The Bulldogs (3-10, 0-2) rank 11th in the SoCon in both scoring defense (allowing 77.1 points per game) and field-goal percentage defense (allowing teams to shoot 49.7 percent), ahead of only UNC Greensboro in both categories. In large measure, that's because the Bulldogs' man-to-man defense has struggled to stop guards like Raffa from driving by defenders and into the lane. During a recent eight-game losing streak, the Bulldogs allowed an average of 34 points in the paint per game, and foes shot 59.6 percent from inside the 3-point arc. There were some signs of progress against Virginia-Wise, which scored 27 points in the

paint and shot 43.4 percent inside the arc. "I only see the bad things, so I'm disappointed in our on-the-ball defense," said coach Chuck Driesell, who tried some 2-3 zone in that game. "We gave up too many points in the point, but we held them to 74 points and we gave up a 3 and a 2 at the end, so it could have been in the 60s. "But the glaring mistakes ‌ we try not to let them get to the rim, and we're still not doing a good job of that." On the plus side, the Bulldogs forced 16 turnovers, second-most by a foe this season, and drew three charges, two by Bo Holston and one by Cosmo Morabbi. "We've been playing pretty well offensively," said Morabbi, who scored a career-best 17 against Virginia-Wise. "It's the defense that needs to improve. There is progress, but we still need to stop the drives. We've been working on that all year, and I think it will click soon." Against Furman (6-7, 0-2), the Bulldogs face a team that's working to replace departed guards Jordan Miller and Darryl Evans, as well as All- SoCon forward Amu Saaka from last year's 22-win team. Without those three, coach Jeff Jackson has started nine different players. His team ranks ninth in the league in scoring (66.1 ppg), 11th in shooting (40.4 percent) and last in assists per game (10.5). But Furman's top scorer, senior forward Bryson Barnes, was academically ineligible for the first nine games and has averaged 10.8 points since his return, including 26 in a 76-63 win at Western Kentucky. The Citadel returns home Saturday to face Samford. TONIGHT'S GAME Who: The Citadel at Furman When: 7 p.m. Where: Timmons Arena, Greenville. Copyright Š 1995 - 2012 Evening Post Publishing Co..

The Post and Courier - Citadel snaps 8-game skid: Printer-friendly version - Charleston S... Page 1 of 2

Citadel snaps 8-game skid By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Tuesday, January 3, 2012 THE CITADE L 91, VIRGINIA-WISE 74 A couple of weeks ago, it looked like Cosmo Morabbi's final college basketball season might slip quietly away. Morabbi, the only senior on The Citadel's team, lost his spot in the starting lineup and played only six minutes in an 22-point loss at Coastal Carolina on Dec. 6, the mid-point of an eight-game losing streak. But over the holidays, Morabbi has revived his season. The product of Beverly Hills (Calif.) High School hit 7 of 12 shots for a career-high 17 points Monday night, coupling with 30 from freshman Ashton Moore to lead the Bulldogs to a 91-74 win over Virginia-Wise at McAlister Field House, snapping that eight-game skid. "You get down, you get frustrated," said Morabbi, who was a freshman on The Citadel's 20win team in 2008-09 and considered transferring after ex-coach Ed Conroy left for Tulane in 2010. "But I tried to keep going hard in practice and keeping getting better. That's all you can do." Morabbi hit 4 of 5 shots and scored 10 points in a 70-58 loss at Denver before Christmas, then returned to the starting lineup and scored seven points in an 86-55 loss at Tennessee. Consistent production from the team's only senior is huge for second-year coach Chuck Driesell, who starts two freshmen and played two more in his eight-man rotation against Virginia-Wise. "He's earned it," said Driesell, whose team is 3-10. "A lot of teams we face have some mature guys, and it's hard to compete against that sometimes. It's nice to have a senior who can keep us composed, and it's nice to have him playing well. It'd be huge for us if he continues to play like that." Moore, the knob from Suffolk, Va., hit 10 of 16 shots (3 of 4 from 3-point range) and made 7 of 8 free throws for his career-best 30. He is the first Bulldog to score at least 30 in a game since Cameron Wells had 30 in an overtime win against Appalachian State on Feb. 12, 2009.

Tennessee too much for Citadel, Groselle Staff report Friday, December 30, 2011 KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The Citadel's Mike Groselle netted a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, but it was Tennessee that came away with a 86-55 victory in front of 16,245 in attendance at Thompson-Boiling Arena on Thursday night. Groselle, who reach the 20-point plateau for the fifth time in his Bulldogs career, became just the fifth player this season to score 20 points or more against the Volunteers.

Robert Willett/MCT Harrison Barnes helped fifth-ranked North Carolina win its 25th straight game at the Dean Smith Center on Thursday night, beating Elon, 100-62. The Citadel was successful on 22 of 56 field-goal attempts, including four from beyond the arc, led by Groselle who finished 8 of 15 from the field. The Dogs grabbed 27 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive glass, accounting for eight second chance points. "(Groselle) has played well every game," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. "He's a tough kid. He works hard. He's not the most athletic or gifted, but he really makes up for it with effort. "We do the best job we can to get him the ball as much as we can. And he made some good decisions tonight when he couldn't score, so I was proud of him about that." Joining Groselle among individual leaders were DeVontae Wright with eight points, and C.J. Bray and Cosmo Morabbi with seven each.

The loss drops The Citadel to 2-10 as they complete a three-game road stretch. The Bulldogs return to McAlister Field House to host Virginia-Wise on Monday at 7 p.m. before beginning Southern Conference play. Tennessee, which shot better than 50 percent in each period, hit 33 of 59 from the floor and knocked down 9 of 22 from 3-point range. Yemi Makanjuola led four Vols in double figures with a career-high 18 points. Teammates Skylar McBee (12 points), Trae Golden (10 points) and Renaldo Woolridge (10 points) joined Makanjuola among double-digit performers. Makanjuola completed his double-double performance with 11 rebounds, giving the Vols (6-6) a 40-27 edge on the boards as Tennessee outscored the Bulldogs 42-22 in the paint. Trailing 40-25 at the intermission, The Citadel opened with a flurry of points in the second half from Wright and Morabbi to cut the margin to 42-30 in less than a minute. Tennessee reacted with a 13-2 run over the next 4:45 of the half. Copyright Š 1995 - 2012 Evening Post Publishing Co..

The Post and Courier - Citadel loses 7th straight: Printer-friendly version - Charleston SC ... Page 1 of 1

Citadel loses 7th straight Staff report Friday, December 23, 2011 DENVER -- The Denver Pioneers scored the final 16 points of the first half to break open a tight game, and held on for a 70-58 victory over The Citadel on Thursday night. Forward Chris Udofia scored 19 points to lead Denver (10-2). The Bulldogs (2-9) lost their seventh straight basketball game despite 16 points and eight rebounds from center Mike Groselle. Guard DeVontae Wright added 15 points, Lawrence Miller 12 and Cosmo Morabbi a season-best 10 for the Bulldogs, who are at Tennessee on Dec. 29. "It was a tale of two halves," said Citadel coach Chuck Driesell. "If we had play in the first half with the aggressiveness and toughness we did in the second half, who knows? But we got better in the second half." The Citadel jumped out to a 7-3 lead and trailed by only 21-19 after a Groselle layup with 5:14 left in the first half. But the Pioneers ripped off a 16-0 run to end the half, taking a 37-19 lead into the locker room. Brian Stafford made two 3-pointers and Chris Udofia scored five points to fuel the Denver run, while the Bulldogs missed four shots with three turnovers during that stretch. Denver extended its run to 27-3 and its lead to 48-22 early in the second half. The Bulldogs held Denver without a field goal for about 10 minutes and crawled to within 63-49 on consecutive buckets by Wright. But Royce O'Neal's trey blunted the charge, and The Citadel could only get as close as 12 in the final minute. "It's frustrating for me and the players," Driesell said. "But we see the big picture. We're working on getting better every game, and by the time January and February come around, we want to be playing our best ball." Denver shot 46.2 percent from 3-point range, with guard Brett Olson hitting 3 of 6 for 10 points. This report was compiled by Jeff Hartsell of The Post and Courier staff. The Post and Courier - Citadel falls to JMU: Printer-friendly version - Charleston SC - po... Page 1 of 1

Citadel falls to JMU Staff report Tuesday, December 20, 2011 HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Homecoming was not sweet for The Citadel basketball coach Chuck Driesell on Monday night, as the Bulldogs lost by 67-49 to Driesell's former team at James Madison. Humpty Hitchens and Julius Wells scored 12 points each for James Madison, where Driesell served as assistant head coach to his father, Lefty, for nine seasons. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-8 with their sixth straight loss, their longest skid since last year's team lost seven in a row. The Citadel is at University of Denver on Thursday night. Citadel center Mike Groselle was the only Bulldog to score in double figures, with 11 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. The Bulldogs shot just 35.8 percent from the field, made 6 of 21 from 3-point range and hit only 5 of 16 free throws. "We've been focusing on defense, and that may have taken a toll on the offense," Driesell said. "But I don't think that's the case. We rushed some shots and weren't patient enough." After giving up more than 80 points in five straight games, The Citadel kept JMU (5-3) to 67, though the Dukes did shoot 52 percent from the floor. "Our defense was good enough, not great," Driesell said. "We held them to 67, which is okay. We were determined not to give up 80 like we have been." At the start, the Bulldogs missed five shots with four turnovers as JMU jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The Citadel got to within 19-12, but the Dukes led by 34-21 at halftime and by 21 in the second half. "They had us stymied a little at the beginning," Driesell said. "And when we got it going, it was too little, too late." 3-Point Field Goals -- Citadel 6-21 (Wright 2-3, Miller 2-6, Moore 1-4, Bray 1-4, Smith 0-1, Morabbi 0-1, Holston 0-2); JMU 8-22 (Semenov 3-3, Wells 3-5, Hitchens 2-6, Pierce 0-1, Moore 01, Marks 0-, Davis 0-5). Steals -- Citadel 6 (Harris 2, Moore 2); JMU 9 (Hitchens 3). Blocks -Citadel 1 (Groselle); JMU 4 (Davis, Marks, Wells, Semenov). Turnovers -- Citadel 12 (Smith 3); JMU 11 (Moore 3). Dogs post SoCon win By Jeff Hartsell <a href="mailto:jhartsell@postandcourier.com">jhartsell@postandcourier.com</a> Sunday, January 8, 2012 A first-half collision with Cosmo Morabbi left Citadel center Mike Groselle with a painfullooking knot on his right shin Saturday night. "We got tangled up and his knee went straight into my shin," Groselle said after a 73-62 win over Samford before 1,023 fans at McAlister Field House. "It hurt a lot. My leg tightened up, and I looked down and it was like, 'Oh, geez.' " That was about the only thing The Citadel teammates did wrong. Groselle, a 6-8 junior, set a school record by going 10 of 10 from the field for 25 points, and the senior Morabbi added a career-best 20 points as The Citadel led the whole way to claim its first Southern Conference basketball victory. It was a much-needed shot of confidence for a team that lost by 32 points at Furman on Thursday. With home games against Elon and UNC Greensboro upcoming, The Citadel (411, 1-3) can try to build a win streak. "It means a lot," said Morabbi, who hit 4 of 7 from 3-point range and has made 31 of 46 shots over the last five games. "We're 1-0 at home in the league now, and we shoot the ball pretty well at home. We're excited about these next two games." Groselle played the second half with a heavily wrapped shin, but it hardly slowed him. He added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal to his 25 points, and his 100 percent shooting from the field (with a minimum of 10 tries) broke the school record of 92.3 percent held by John Sutor and Ted Mosay. "Did you see the size of that bump?" coach Chuck Driesell said. "It was pretty big, and Mike actually played pretty good afterward. That's just who he is, a gutty kid who really wants to win. He knows he has to be on the floor to help us do that." With Morabbi dishing six assists and sophomore guard DeVontae Wright eight, The Citadel's offense clicked with 21 assists on 26 baskets and 56.5 percent shooting. Wright scored 12 points and freshman Ashton Moore had 10. And for once, The Citadel added defense to the mix. Samford (3-11, 0-3) gets nearly 50 percent of its offense from 3-pointers, but hit just 7 of 29 (24.1 percent), its second-worst performance of the season. The worst was 3 of 16 in an 82-50 loss at No. 3 Kentucky.

"Our guys were tough," Driesell said. "You have to stick to your principles against these guys, or they will get you with the back-door cut or wide-open 3-pointer. That's a matter of staying focused and mentally tough." The Citadel led by 36-29 at the half and built a 17-point lead in the second half. Better foul shooting (The Citadel was 15 of 27) would have iced the game sooner. Copyright Š 1995 - 2012 Evening Post Publishing Co..

The result was a 31-point halftime deficit for The Citadel, and an eventual 80-51 loss to the surging Wildcats in Davidson, N.C.

In losing their third straight game, the Bulldogs fell behind by margins of 11-0 and 30-2 at the game's start, missing 15 of their first 16 shots from the field. "We've played some good teams this year," said coach Chuck Driesell, whose team is 4-14 overall and 1-6 in the Southern Conference. "But our guys were like deer in the headlights tonight." Only junior center Mike Groselle put up competitive numbers against the Wildcats, hitting 7 of 10 shots for 22 points with five rebounds. The rest of the team made 11 of 41 shots (26.8 percent), and the Bulldogs were outrebounded by 43-20. In fact, The Citadel missed 33 shots and grabbed only two of the resulting offensive rebounds. "They are better than us," Driesell said of the Wildcats (14-4, 8-0), who have won seven straight. "They are a really good team with size, quickness and strength. They made shots and disrupted us. Our guys found out how good they are tonight. I don't know if they really knew. You can watch film all you want, but when you step on the court, it's an eye-opener." Jake Cohen, a 6-10 junior, scored 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting for the Wildcats, who shot 53.4 percent. De'Mon Brooks added 15 points and J.P. Kuhlman 11 for Davidson, which scored its biggest win over The Citadel since an 85-49 victory in 2006. The Citadel missed 12 of its first 13 shots with three turnovers. By the time the Bulldogs made their second basket of the game, a 3-pointer by Ashton Moore with just five minutes left in the half, they had missed 15 of their first 16 shots. Down by 31 at the break, the Bulldogs could only get as close as 26 in the second half.

"I think we came out in the second half and played with more confidence," Driesell said. "On the scoreboard, we beat them by two in the second half. We had to forget about the first half and show ourselves we could play with these guys." The Citadel plays Monday at Georgia Southern, a 64-58 winner over the College of Charleston on Saturday. "We've got to forget about how this game feels and prepare for the next game," Driesell said. "That's critical."

A month ago, few could have predicted that College of Charleston would wrap up the regular season with Mark Byington prowling the sideline and Bobby Cremins walking the beach in Hilton Head. Just a week ago, no one thought The Citadel would have a chance to end the season with a three-game winning streak.

Much has changed as the Cougars and Bulldogs meet at 3 p.m. today at McAlister Field House to end the regular season. If the Cougars’ 83-64 win over The Citadel on Dec. 1 seems a lifetime ago … well, in some ways, it kind of was. Back then, the Cougars won 10 of their first 12 games, knocking off Clemson and Tennessee and almost upsetting Louisville to send expectations soaring. But they were an injury-riddled 12-8 and had lost six of eight, when on the morning of Jan. 27, word began to leak that a stressed-out Cremins would take a medical leave of absence. That left assistant coach Byington in charge. And after a loss to Wofford in his first game, Charleston (18-11, 9-8 Southern Conference) has won six of eight under Byington, including an impressive BracketBuster victory at Kent State. Freshman standout Anthony Stitt returned from a broken hand to hit a huge 3-pointer in Thursday’s 58-53 win over Georgia Southern. “Mark has done a great job with them, and they’ve gotten healthier over the last few weeks,” Citadel coach Chuck Driesell said. “We’ll have to play good basketball to be able to stay with them.” The Bulldogs (6-22, 3-14) have been able to do just that over the last two games, slowing the pace and hitting the boards hard in wins over Chattanooga and Appalachian State. Those victories snapped an 11-game skid and gave The Citadel consecutive wins for the first time in a year.

The teams’ first meeting included a compelling duel between Citadel center Mike Groselle (20 points, 19 rebounds) and Cougars forward Trent Wiedeman (22 points, 10 rebounds). But Charleston forced 21 turnovers and got 20 points from Antwaine Wiggins and 14 from Andrew Lawrence to win for the third straight time in the series. “It’s a different Citadel team than the last time we played,” Lawrence said. “I’m excited about the game. It will give us a good test before the tournament.” Both teams are locked into their seeds for next week’s SoCon tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Cougars are the South No. 4 seed, and the Bulldogs are No. 6. Their first-round foes are still to be determined. But first, there is today’s game, the 88th meeting between the rivals. “Every game is going to be like (the Georgia Southern game) from here on out, a tournament atmosphere,” Byington said. “We just want to keep getting better.” The Post and Courier’s Tommy Braswell contributed to this report.
