Season Outlook Having finished a season that saw some significant “firsts” in program history, the 2005 Citadel soccer team begins a new era with the hiring of first year head coach Chris Lenzo. Coach Lenzo is optimistic about the possibility of building on the strides made last year.

After a scrimmage against Campbell the Bulldogs head to Lexington, VA to battle VMI.

“We are returning a lot of talent and adding a very hard-working, committed freshman class,” remarked Lenzo. “Having gotten a small taste of Southern Conference success this past year with our first conference point, I’m confident that the players are going to have their minds set on taking another step forward this fall.”

The other big nonconference highlight is the October 25 match with Florida State. “That will be a very special night for our team. To play against an ACC team the caliber of Florida State is an opportunity that many players do not get in their careers.”

“I think the rivalry with VMI is wonderful,” said Lenzo. “It’s a game that both teams get up for and is a great way to start off our season.”

While the conference schedule is largely the same as in years past, the turnover in conference coaches should make it an intriguing year. In the past two years, new coaches have been hired at six of the 11 Southern Conference schools. “Though Furman and Greensboro have traded the conference title back and forth, the conference has really improved overall in the past few years. Charleston, Chattanooga and Davidson have clearly made great strides, and every game in the conference is competitive.”

Lenzo plans on creating a system of play around a talented core from some of the best soccer clubs in the country. “With players from clubs like Bethesda, CASL, Charlotte Soccer Club, Internationals, Clearwater Chargers, and Peachtree City Lazers, we will look to play an attacking style based on possession,” commented Lenzo. “Our depth of talent has increased every year, and I think we are at a point where we can play a style that involves keeping the ball and allowing more players to get forward to support the attack.”

Coach Lenzo knows that with the competitive schedule, the Bulldogs will need to draw on the attributes that help them every day at The Citadel. “It will be the psychological part of the game that will make the difference for us. We need to take the mental toughness, commitment, and work ethic that makes a cadet a cadet and translate it onto the field.”

Leading the list of returnees this fall are seniors Lauren Merchant, the team’s top scorer with 19 points and Miriam Crawford, who contributed three goals. The top goalkeeper is senior Angie Ellenwood, who started 12 of 14 games and registered a team-high 74 saves.

On May 4, The Citadel’s Director of Athletics Les Robinson along with Senior Woman Administrator Kelly Simpson announced that former Western Carolina assistant coach Chris Lenzo had been named The Citadel’s second head women’s soccer coach. Lenzo joins the Bulldogs after having spent four seasons with the women’s program at Western Carolina. During his tenure with the Catamounts, Lenzo helped lead the team to a 22-16-5 Southern Conference record, a Southern Conference regular season championship in 2001, and worked primarily with the defense in 2002, which gave up only six goals in 10 conference matches and posted an 8-1-2 record. Lenzo was heavily involved in technical development and fitness training for the team, as well as tending to administrative duties and recruiting.

High School… A 2005 graduate of West Morris Central High School... earned two letters in soccer and one in lacrosse... Personal… Born October 7, 1986... daughter of Ralph and Kathy Di Fiore... majoring in biology.

In addition to his work at Western, Lenzo was an active camp instructor at Duke, Furman and Kentucky, while assisting former Catamount head coach Debbie Hensley in directing Western Carolina’s soccer camp. Lenzo holds a National “C” coaching license from the U.S. Soccer Federation and a Goalkeeping Level 1 Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Lenzo earned his master’s in Sociology from the University of Georgia in 1999 as well as in American Studies from the University of Alabama in 1994. He received his bachelor’s degree in English from Drake University in 1992, where he was a member of the soccer team. A former forward, Lenzo also saw action at outside midfield and sweeper. Lenzo grew up in Minnetonka, MN where he graduated in 1988 from Minnetonka High School. He is married to Volunteer Assistant Coach Dr. Candace Boan of Roswell, Ga.

Meet the Bulldogs Boan holds a USSF National D License and continues to be active in soccer leagues as well as road races. Boan has spent the last six years as a professor of Psychology at Western Carolina University, a position she will retain this year by commuting between Charleston and Cullowhee. She graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Psychology in 1993 and completed her doctorate in School Psychology from the University of Alabama in 1998.

Christine Moran begins her second season as a Bulldog assistant coach. Moran assists in all aspects of The Citadel program, primarily working with the goalkeepers.

A native of Roswell, GA, Boan was a standout in soccer, basketball, and softball at Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA. Boan is married to head coach Chris Lenzo.

Moran joined the Bulldog staff having spent time as a coach for the Canisius Women’s Soccer Clinic and Elmwood Franklin Elementary. She also brings experience to the weight room as Moran was a floor trainer for the Buffalo Athletic Club. A captain in 2003 as goalkeeper, Moran’s save per game (7.31) with a .787 save percentage ranked 16th in the nation among Division I schools and was invited to participate in the Infosport, Inc. Pro Soccer Combine. During her junior season she ranked third in Division I with a 9.17 saves per game and 10th with 19 single game saves. As starting goalkeeper, Moran earned defensive most valuable player and was nominated for the school’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Krista Gruhn is in her first year as a graduate assistant with The Citadel’s Sports Medicine staff. Gruhn’s primary duites this year will be wtih women’s soccer as well as assisting in the day-to-day activities in the training room.

Moran graduated from Canisius in 2004 with Bachelor of Science degree and is currently working towards her master’s degree from The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Gruhn acquired her bachelor’s in athletic training from Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD where she worked with softball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and track and field. She also worked part time during the spring of 2005 as a certified athletic trainer for both men’s and women’s tennis. At William and Mary, Gruhn gained experience with football as she participated in an internship with the Tribe.

Candace Boan enters her first season as an volunteer assistant coach with The Citadel soccer team. 2004 In Review S.C. State. Forward Miriam Crawford racked up six points to be the next top scorer with three goals. Defender Julie Austin rounded out the top four with two goals, one assist, five points, nine shots on goal and a .562 shot on goal percentage.

The Citadel soccer team finished the 2004 season with a 2-15-1 (0-10-1 SoCon) record. This year marked a 2-2 draw with Southern Conference rival East Tennessee State. The tie was the Bulldogs’ best showing against a Southern Conference opponent since its 2001 inaugural season. “We started the season really well,” said head soccer coach Megan Hjerling. “Then we got to the middle of the year and lost two key players for a few games. Defender Megan McAuliffe sat out the last third of the season with an injury and Miriam Crawford missed games battling injuries of her own.” The Bulldogs’ two wins came back-to-back against South Carolina State (8-1) and VMI (3-2) in late September. That same weekend, the Bulldogs fought to a double overtime draw with East Tennessee State, 2-2.

Freshman Maggie Maggie Bryan Bryan also had a standout year as she started all 18 games for the Bulldogs and solidified her place on the squad being the third top scorer with two goals, one assist, five points, 12 shots on goal and a .600 shot on goal percentage.

“We had a huge weekend when we played VMI and ETSU back to back,” commented Hjerling. “Then we went on to play Furman and Chattanooga, both of which are two big guns in the Southern Conference. Playing Furman on the road and them coming home to play Chattanooga, kind of hurt our morale.”

Goalkeepers junior Angie Ellenwood (9,903:01) and freshman Brit Bunnell (725:44) shared time defending the Bulldog goal. As the leader, Ellenwood tallied 74 saves with a .592 save percentage and was credited with both of The Citadel wins this season. Bunnell also had a solid performance as she ended with 65 saves and a .637 save percentage. Combined, the two goalies averaged a .615 save percentage.

The junior class really stepped up this year as forward Lauren Merchant was the top scorer with eight goals and three assists tallying 19 points. Two of her eight scores were game winners. Merchant was also the first women’s soccer player at The Citadel to be named the Southern Conference Player of the Week after Lauren Merchant recording a hat trick against

Three seniors also played their final season with The Citadel soccer team. Shawna Hartman, Debbie White and Kara Keiter were the last remaining players from the 2001 inaugural squad. Hartman netted two goals tallying up four points on the year while attempting 10 shots on goal with a .556 shot on goal percentage. White also found the back of the net with a .500 shot on goal percentage, and Keiter tallied an assist on the season finishing up with a .333 shot on goal percentage. “As a whole, the team played well,” stated Hjerling. “We played hard for 45 minutes but we needed to play for 90. Our program is still very young and that is what hurt us at the end of the day, but our team will continue to build and mature.”

The Southern Conference The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Fourteen institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. In 1922, six more schools - Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. Virginia Military Institute became a member in 1924 and Duke University came into the fold in 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference. The leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. The second major shift happened in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest officially withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against their local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. The most recent addition, Elon University, joined the Southern Conference on July 1, 2003. The Phoenix replaced Virginia Military Institute which left the conference on June 30, 2003. Prior to Elon, the most recent expansion had taken place in December 1995 when three schools were approved for admission: College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro and Wofford. UNC Greensboro and Wofford began competing in the league in 1997-98 and College of Charleston entered the league during the 1998-99 season. The newest change which took place in the summer of 2005 came when East Tennessee State left the conference leaving the league with only 11 teams.

Gen. John S. Grinalds who left The Citadel on Aug.1. The Board of Visitors named Brigadier General Roger Clifton Poole, a business professor and former vice president for academic affairs, to serve as interim president until Rosa arrives. Rosa, 53, took over as superintendent of the Air Force Academy in July of 2003. A command pilot with more than 3600 flying hours, Rosa was commissioned in the Air Force in 1973 after graduating from The Citadel with a B.S. in business administration. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden State University and has completed programs at Harvard, the U.S. Army War College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Air Command and Staff College. Board of Visitors Chairman Billy Jenkinson praised Rosa’s credentials. “With his first-hand knowledge of the college and his vast leadership experience, John Rosa is the ideal person to be our next president,” Jenkinson said.

The Citadel Board of Visitors announced June 19 that they have selected Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa Jr. to be the college’s 19th president subject to his release from active duty. Rosa, a member of the Class of 1973, is currently serving as the superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. “I am extremely honored to be selected as the Citadel’s next president and I sincerely appreciate The Citadel Board of Visitors’ vote of confidence in me,” Rosa said of his appointment. “Donna and I are excited about the prospects of returning to Charleston and taking on the challenges of running this great institution.” “It goes without saying, however, that – pending my release from active duty — we will truly miss the outstanding

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most soughtafter speakers, Robinson begins his fifth year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 197485, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two

rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson is in his seventh year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and eight grandchildren.
