FULFILLING OUR PROMISE TO NEVADA‘S EDUCATORS, STUDENTS, AND FAMILIES
Dear Friend of Communities In Schools of Nevada:
At the beginning of this fiscal year, for which this Impact Report covers, the senior management and Board of Directors adopted an ambitious three-year strategic plan, Fulfilling Our Promise. It outlined a vision to:
Grow to serve more Title I and high-needs schools aligned across feeder patterns
Elevate our leadership in the nonprofit and government sectors and increase public revenue as a share of our budget
Innovate new programs to serve alumni
Develop our staff and our culture
As CEO and Board Chair, we are proud to report that CIS has made many strides in achieving these goals within the plan’s first year, including:
14 new schools added across Nevada
The unanimous passage of the bipartisan Keeping Kids In School Act – $4 million over the biennium in state funding
Development of an Alumni Executive Council
A strong team of over 200 employees
The best news of all? The students we serve achieved the highest graduation rate in CIS history with 95% of them crossing the finish line.
As you read more about what we’ve accomplished with supporters like you, we thank you for being a vital part of the community that surrounds our students with support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
With much gratitude,
Raymond Specht Board Chair

HOW TIER 3 CASE MANAGEMENT MAKES A DIFFERENCE: 1 STORY OUT OF 693
SENIOR YEAR: A HOME RUN
Despite his hard work and dedication, Trevor faced significant challenges throughout high school at Spring Creek. His mental health was impacted by the lingering effect of isolation from school building closures. This setback was further compounded by a split home, with his mother living in Idaho, leading to strained motivation and academic performance, particularly in math. However, the revival of baseball and the dedicated efforts of teachers, along with the invaluable support of his CIS Site Coordinator, Rowena Holland, rekindled his drive. Rowena found Trevor a tutor twice per week and helped him enroll in summer school, which were crucial steps that helped his grades improve from D’s to A’s and B’s. Through a combination of direct enrollment and credit recovery classes, Trevor managed to catch up and excel his senior year, paralleling his success with an outstanding baseball season.

GENEROSITY DRESSES STUDENTS FOR PROM
Prom is a storied rite of passage in the lives of young people. And yet, not every student has the resources to experience the magic of the evening. For the second year, CIS has teamed up with our Advisory Council and local business partners, including A.M. Beauty Institute, to ensure prom is a night to remember. Students shop for the formal wear they need to shine, receive vouchers to dine at local restaurants, and even get the makeovers they desire to dazzle for photos. In total, the event led to 178 items, including dress shoes, accessories, suits and dresses being given to local students. Thanks to sustained partnerships, CIS Northeastern Nevada distributed $127,560.26 in basic needs items.
IMPROVING ATTENDANCE, FEEDING STUDENTS AND ENHANCING MENTAL HEALTH
Grass Valley Elementary School introduced a new incentive-based attendance program, increasing average daily attendance from 89% to 92%.
The weekEND food bag program allowed us to distribute 9,000+ food bags to 277 students.
A partnership with UNLV PRACTICE was expanded using HCSD and ECSD funds, adding three graduate assistants, extra support for summer mental health services, and serving 56 students for 827 hours overall.

RECORD-BREAKING SUCCESS IN SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
CIS of Southern Nevada organized its most successful “Fill The Bus” back-to-school drive, adding NV Energy as an additional location. The Venetian, Credit One Bank, Aristocrat Technologies and other community partners collaborated to secure over $60,000 in monetary donations and over 70,500 in-kind contributions, fully stocking resource rooms throughout the school district.
NEW SCHOOL YEAR CELEBRATED WITH CONGRESSIONAL SUPPORT
The new school year at Monaco Middle School began with a discussion led by U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, highlighting the positive impact of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding on CIS programs. Concurrently, Clark High School welcomed U.S. Congresswoman Susie Lee to help kickoff the new school year.

DRESHAUN‘S
PATH TO SELFDISCOVERY AND COMPASSION
Dreshaun faced challenges with managing his emotions and coping with anger in healthy ways. This was compounded by his younger brother’s illness requiring out-of-state chemotherapy treatments, which often left him home alone. Despite these obstacles, Dreshaun found solace and structure in football, diligently cared for his siblings, caught up on all his credits through APEX, and achieved his goal of graduating with aspirations to join the Air Force. His journey of selfimprovement led him to become a source of compassion and support for his peers.
Opening up to his CIS Site Coordinator marked a turning point for Dreshaun. The support allowed him to become more open, not just at school but also with his family. He describes a transformation into a calmer, more focused individual who has discovered his true potential. Dreshaun’s remarkable growth and positive impact on other students earned him the 2023 Power Within Award.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS BOOST
STUDENT SUCCESS AND ENGAGEMENT
HOW TIER 1 SCHOOLWIDE SUPPORTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR 13 SCHOOLS
Community partnerships are pivotal to success. These partnerships not only remove barriers to education but foster a supportive community network around our students. Assistance League of Reno-Sparks significantly increased its contribution, ensuring a steady supply of well-fitted uniforms, easing the burden on families and encouraging school attendance. The Reno Fire Department deepened its involvement, engaging elementary school students with recreational and educational activities, reinforcing community ties and motivating academic achievement. The Grand Sierra Resort’s sponsorship, auction package, and space donation for our second annual All In For Kids Gala in April 2023 played a crucial role in celebrating student achievements and raising nearly $84,000.

COMMUNITY UNITES TO EQUIP STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS
The “Fill the Bus” school supply drive marks an exciting start to the school year, bringing together long-standing partners such as The Grand Sierra Resort, D.R. Horton, Nevada State Bank, Yoga Pod, Fennimore Craig, and Great Basin Federal Credit Union. The event raised over $12,500.
A SEASON OF GIVING
TIER 3 CASE MANAGED SUPPORT
TEK Inspections’ donation of Thanksgiving turkeys has become a cherished tradition. For Christmas, a collaboration with Great Basin Federal Credit Union (GBFCU) for the Angel Tree gift donation event resulted in countless gifts for students and families in need. The year concluded with a festive gift wrapping party, bringing together volunteers from the Reno Fire Department and the community.
ALUMNI FEEDBACK SHAPES
NEW ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Administrative leadership and high school Site Coordinators convened a focus group with seven alumni who reflected on their experiences with CIS. The discussion also focused on setting priorities for the upcoming Alumni Association. Understanding the importance of alumni engagement and relevance, the team emphasized empowering members to craft the vision for the association, ensuring it meets

SISTERS
OVERCOME
ADVERSITY WITH HELP FROM CIS MENTORS
Yarely and Yadira, twins from Hug High School, overcame significant challenges growing up in a family of seven with a single mother facing domestic abuse and a substance use disorder. Despite their hardships, including the responsibility of caring for younger siblings, school provided a sanctuary and a sense of normalcy. Their involvement in the JROTC program led them to join CIS, where they met their Site Coordinators, Robert and Alex, who became pivotal figures.
With the support of CIS, the sisters received not only basic necessities like food and clothing but also emotional and mental support, filling a crucial gap in their lives. Now, one sister is pursuing higher education at the University of Nevada, Reno, while the other is exploring her future paths. Both advocate for the continued support of CIS and the vital role of Site Coordinators. As members of the CIS of Western Nevada Alumni Advisory Council, they remain connected to the organization that significantly impacted their lives.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, NGM announced a $500,000 donation to strengthen CIS’ evidence-based Integrated Student Supports (ISS) model. This grant elevated NGM’s cumulative contribution to CIS and our students to more than $3.8 million since 2009.
This $500,000 transformative donation became the catalyst for enhancing ISS services, providing tutoring, nourishment, clothing, and mental well-being services to ignite the dreams of 18,000 students across 15 high-needs schools within four Nevada school districts. NGM’s generosity extends far and wide, adding support for students in Washoe County and critical resources for Clark, Elko, and Humboldt County students. This contribution includes support for our virtual mental health counseling for rural students, a lifeline in times of need. NGM’s investment in education serves as the backbone for our evidence-based model. Thank you to Nevada Gold Mines for being committed to shaping the future of education in our state.
