Master of Counseling in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The mission of the Master of Counseling program in clinical mental health counseling is to prepare students to become .license eligible as professional .counselors in Arizona and other states with comparable licensure .requirements.

With its strong focus on multicultural counseling across the lifespan, students learn to promote the health of individuals, families, groups, and organizations in a diverse society. The program prepares students to work with clients in a variety of mental health settings and also prepares students who wish to pursue doctoral-level studies.

Applying to the Program The Path to Licensure ASU’s Master of Counseling program has received approved program status from the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE), which provides a streamlined pathway to licensure for our graduates in Arizona.

To become a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Arizona, graduates of our program must: • Pass the National Counselor Examination, and • Complete two years (3200 hours) of supervised counseling practice post-degree

If you plan to seek licensure in another state, please check with that state’s licensing board for minimum education and clinical requirements.

Applicants are considered once a year for admission in the fall. Applications open around September 1; completed applications are due the first business day after January 1.

Applications are submitted online.

Specifically, we ask you to describe how your education and training, as well as volunteer and professional experiences, inform your decision to pursue the MC degree. You should also outline how our program will help you meet your future career goals. You will be expected to discuss your ability to work with and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse society, including (but not limited to) members of diverse racial and ethnic groups and sexual minority individuals. The faculty desires that students have general background knowledge in psychology and counseling, but this is not required.

You will provide email addresses for your letter-ofrecommendation writers. ASU then solicits the letters of recommendation after your application is submitted.

We recommend that applications be submitted in advance of the deadline to allow enough time for recommenders to respond, as incomplete applications cannot be reviewed. Transcripts are required and should be sent directly to ASU’s Graduate College.

Applicants are no longer required to take the verbal and quantitative aptitude sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).

Contact In addition to tuition and other university fees, the MC program fee is $300 per credit hour. Each year, 17.5% of program fees support financial aid for students in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts. The remaining 82.5% funds the following: (a) MC student fellowships, (b) MC student research and teaching assistantships, (c) MC graduate hourly positions, (d) MC student travel, (e) comprehensive examination fees for MC students, (f) establishing Tevera accounts for MC students, (g) background checks, drug tests, and fingerprint cards for CED684 Internship students, (h) updates to our state-of-the-art Counselor Training Center (CTC), (i) enhancement of general facilities to support student life, (j) technology, software, and testing materials to support clinical and didactic training, (k) teaching assistants for CED684 Internship and CED577 Prepracticum, (l) salaries for full-time and visiting MC program faculty, (m) CTC staff salaries, (n) social and networking events, and (o) speaker honoraria for the Patricia Arredondo Diversity and Equity Speaker Series and other invited guests.

We have a limited number of assistantships. Assistantships with half-time appointments (20 hours per week) receive a full tuition remission and student health insurance at no cost. Assistantships with quarter-time appointments (10 hours per week) receive a 50% reduction in tuition and in-state resident tuition status.
