Background
Since the establishment of the Caletas-Ario National Wildlife Refuge in 2006 we have witnessed the power and success of natural regeneration.
Protecting 19 ha crucial for biodiversity such forests, river, estuaries, mangrove. And vital species such: sea turtles, rays, puma, ocelots, deer, among others.
About Us

The Research Center for Environmental and Social Resourcess is a local NGO focused on conservation and experiential education.


2006
The Foundation

A group of students from Cornell came to create a sustainable business plan focused on securing the ecological, economic and sociological future of the Ario ranch, the National Wildlife Refuge, and the surrounding watershed.

2007
Early efforts focused on establising CaletasArio RNVS along with Costa Rica’s Ministry of the Environment, outreach projects, short courses, riverbank restoration along biological corridor and creating alliances.

2012
BoD was formed and investment from donor was accepted for the new CIRENAS campus construction. $2M invested in legal permits, construction and personnel.


2014-2015
Team working on the construction process and setting ground on strategic, financial, legal, programmatic, operational (groups) and marketing with a technical team.
2017-2020
Construction is ready to be used.Team set in place to revamp the sales, marketing and operations. 2020 Campus shut down due to COVID-19 Pandemic.


2022-2023

Slow reactivation of local volunteer groups with low operational capacity. Hiring of new operations director to revamp CIRENAS, recruitment of new board members, reengagement of former donors, strategic alliances for regional impact.
The future


2024
Governance committees start working towards: Financial Sustainability, Strategy and Impact, Legal. Development of a new Strategic Plan with ad-honorem support from INCAE Bussiness School facilitator.
2025 - 2030
Implementation of Strategic Plan focusing on effective management, integration and driving impact in the local landscape.
