Lives Transformed The greatest impact that Circles USA celebrates is the transformation of those who are working to leave poverty behind permanently. As Circle Leaders reach milestones in their journeys toward financial stability, we document their achievements as Lives Transformed stories to highlight joy and hope as valuable tools in combating poverty.

This year’s Lives Transformed cohort rose to a special challenge: public speaking! We invited our national network to submit short videos describing the social, financial, and emotional milestones they’ve reached in their time with Circles. From the comfort of their homes to center stage at our 2023 Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, here are six incredible Circle Leaders sharing, in their own words, how Circles USA has helped them transform their lives.

I joined Circles and met people who genuinely cared and wanted me to succeed in ways that no one has ever wanted for me before. That was life-changing for me and my family.”

Circle Leaders Rebecca & John Fabanwo Circles Upstate SC “Our nonprofit, Hearts of Compassion, was started out of necessity and love for the community. We connect with local businesses to receive donations, then partner with local churches for a safe location to give away the nonperishable items to those in need in the communities. We believe that good hygiene and basic cleaning products for a family’s home are essential to give one pride, wellness, and ambition to go out and succeed.”

John and Rebecca Fabanwo (Circles Upstate SC) appeared side-by-side in a recorded message. Now firmly on the path to economic stability, they shared how they’re boldly paving the way for others through their nonprofit work that supports those in need.

“My Allies were really a rock for me,” Carly said of the challenging time. “Having people that wanted my family to succeed—people who were genuinely accepting and invested in me and my family—made all the difference.”

Carly’s time at Circles shows her determination to shift from surviving to thriving. Last year saw her move to a new townhouse, graduate from Circles, reach economic stability managing a nail salon, and even step up to serve as an Ally. Her daughter, now 22 years old, has broken their family’s cycle of poverty and domestic violence, demonstrating Circles’ intergenerational success.

Chapter Growth We currently have 78 communities involved in Circles USA. In the United States, our presence spans 26 states, 56 counties, and 22 cities with populations over 100,000. There are 14 Circles locations in Ontario, Canada.

Circles USA participants dramatically expand their support networks. At registration, participants struggled to name one or two emergency contacts. At 18 months, participants could name more than four people to call on for support.

Board Advisory Council Circles USA proudly launched a new Advisory Council in July 2022. This group, tasked with amplifying diverse participants’ voices to guide the national board’s decisions, has met eight times to date, addressing topics ranging from “What does success look like at Circles?” to mental health; building community across chapters; and long-term chapter sustainability.

The inaugural Advisory Council consists of 10 people from 10 different chapters—rural, urban, and suburban; new chapters and veteran ones. As this Council cohort winds down, we are considering the best timing for the next cohort. We look forward to bringing together more fresh perspectives to serve this important role in the Circles family.

Circles Documentary Videos Cliff Effect: When Working Hard Doesn’t Work Jennifer and Brian’s animated primer video illuminates the perils of the Cliff Effect, a phenomenon that occurs when a pay raise at work triggers a disproportionate loss of government assistance. It was produced in collaboration with Osmosis Films, a New York City–based creative agency and video production company.

“First of all,” Pelling says, “a huge thanks to Christina Williams [executive director of Innovative Poverty Solutions with Circles NWA] for her detailed feedback and insights. This was a challenging video because it’s aimed at a different audience than the other Circles videos we’ve produced in the past.”

Instead of seasoned Circles members, she explains, “we’re hoping to reach people who have never heard of the Cliff Effect or who may have misconceptions about public assistance—to educate them about a widespread, crippling economic problem that is one of the biggest barriers to ending poverty.”

Circles USA’s ever-expanding original video suite now includes two short films, conceived and co-produced by board member Jennifer Pelling and independent film director Brian Lawes.

The Weekly Meeting Virtual Tour

“Weekly meetings are the heart of Circles USA,” says Executive Director Kamatara Johnson. “They’ve always been our most powerful tool for delivering our transformational services and community-building. The best way to understand what Circles does is to attend a meeting, but that is not possible for many people. So this video was created, not only as a training video, but also as an accessible resource for those hoping to learn more about Circles.”

Filmed at Circles Salt Lake, Utah, with Circles Salt Lake Executive Director Michelle Crawford, the film helps viewers experience the seven steps of a supportive weekly meeting that brings people together to do the work of building community to end poverty.

2023 Leadership Conference The 2023 conference brought together a diverse, dynamic group of Circles USA participants, from people overcoming financial obstacles to funders, policy-makers, and national partners. Our schedule was chock full of knowledge-sharing and fellowship around Circles’s local, statewide, and national efforts to end poverty.

(UMC) in Orlando, FL for our 2023 National Leadership Conference. Our first in-person convening since 2019 was incredibly inspirational, engaging our robust community of practice all across the nation. We gathered not only to reconnect with the mission, the message, and the model but to share innovations and to begin to imagine: What does poverty alleviation look like going forward?

Twenty-four breakout sessions over three days addressed pressing issues for Circles chapters throughout our network.

Session topics included: —The intersection of poverty and mental health, —New ways to tackle the Cliff Effect, and —Emerging trends in philanthropy.

Experts from universities, nonprofits, and community-rooted organizations across the country presented new data on topics such as trauma-sensitive approaches to Circles; ways chapters can support Spanish-speaking Circles; empathy tools for systemic change; and leadership pathways for Circle Leaders.

In her remarks opening the conference’s final day, Kamatara invited attendees to imagine beyond current iterations of CUSA to bold future visions for our shared work.

“For those of you who are veteran chapters, take a moment to think how far Circles has come since you began. When Circles first started, we only had the core of the model with Circle Leaders, Allies, and youth, plus an advisory council, with limited materials and limited support. Circles 2.0 came to life with the addition of Resource Teams and the upgraded curriculum, materials, and support services from the national office. Now, we all wonder, what will Circles 3.0 look like? Truly, what will the next chapter look like for Circles USA as we turn the corner on our 26th year of building community to end poverty?”

Circles Regional Coaches Regional Coaches play a multifaceted role in supporting Circles USA's mission:

As Circles USA continues to grow, the national office is delighted to enhance the infrastructure and reach of our chapter support system.

Regional Coaches, in particular, have proven pivotal in strengthening our community of practice and fostering positive change across the nation.

This expanded regional leadership allows for a more knowledgeable, robust system of chapter support, bridging geographic, economic, and political boundaries.

Hosting Monthly Regional Community of Practice Calls Regional coaches facilitate monthly calls, fostering mutual support and collaboration among chapters within their region.

These calls serve as a platform for sharing best practices, addressing challenges, and building a stronger sense of community.

Providing Regular Coaching for Regional Chapters Our coaches provide ongoing guidance and support to regional chapters, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge necessary to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Advising New Chapters Regional coaches actively advise new chapters during their early design phase, offering valuable insights and expertise to set them on a path to success before their official launch.

Supporting Regional Collaborations Encouraging collaboration is at the heart of our regional coaching efforts. Coaches work to facilitate regional collaborations, expanding local Big View efforts to create a more significant impact on systemic change.

Informing the National Office Regional Coaches serve as a vital link between local chapters and the national office, providing valuable insights into site-specificregional trends and needs. This information helps shape the national strategy and ensures that support is tailored to meet the unique challenges faced by different regions.

Meet Our Regional Coaches Addie Hartnett Southern Region

Addie launched their home chapter, Circles Orange County (now Circles Central Florida, which comprises two locations: Circles West Orange and Circles Orlando), in 2014.

Since October 2020, they’ve worked in several roles there and throughout the Southern region. With Addie’s leadership, this cohort has met monthly for over two years.

Mid-Atlantic Region

Helen was hired as a Circles Coach at Circles RVA in Richmond, Virginia, in 2018. She recently transitioned out of her role with Circles RVA and is currently focusing on creating opportunities for Mid-Atlantic chapters to help one another thrive by receiving the best information and support.

Julie Liske

Midwest Region

Julie began service as Regional Coach for the Midwest Region in 2022.

She believes that connecting with her cohort will enrich her life and the lives of those they serve, and she hopes and trusts that what she brings will be helpful, hopeful, and valuable.

Michelle Crawford Western Region

Michelle is the executive director at Circles Salt Lake. Earlier this year, she extended her commitment by taking on the additional responsibility of Western Region Coach.

She values the chance to broaden her support across Circles chapters and the families we collectively serve.

(Re-) Introducing Our National Coach As we move into 2024, we are excited to announce that Addie Hartnett, our current Southern Regional Coach, will assume the new National Coach role to provide general support to all chapters, plus targeted support to enhance the impact of our Regional Coach team.

The national office extends its gratitude to all Regional Coaches.

Your dedication to building a stronger, more interconnected network transcends geographic boundaries and transforms communities.

As Circles USA continues to expand its footprint, we are confident that the Regional Coaches and the new National Coach will play crucial roles in realizing our vision of poverty alleviation and systemic change.

We also wish Karen, Jeff, and Julie all the best as they step down from their regional coach roles to pursue new opportunities.

Big View Circles USA’s Big View Platform frames policy recommendations within the local, state, and national scope. This Platform, informed by our original National Big View Team and authored in 2020 by Board Chair Joan Kuriansky, addresses six issues our chapters flagged as high priority: — quality jobs, — the Cliff Effect, — broadband access, — healthcare, — housing, and — transportation.

It also emphasizes Circles USA’s commitment to addressing the structural biases that unjustly affect people of color and other historically marginalized communities. These six issues are more relevant today than ever before.

Circles chapters across the nation deepened and expanded their Big View work this year, tackling systemic change with collective knowledge drawn from government, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and philanthropies.

Big View Spotlight: National Big View Team Our National Big View Team gathered champions from a wide variety of chapters to research best practices, coordinate events, and synthesize strategies related to our Policy Platform (especially regarding the Cliff Effect, the number one issue that keeps people trapped in poverty).

This team’s work heavily informs Circles programming, such as our Big View monthly newsletter, which shares resources for systemic change, and the production of the Cliff Effect primer video.

In 2023 the National Big View Team engaged with causes, effects, and literature pertaining to benefits cliffs at every level, asking: —How does the Cliff Effect impact those in poverty?

—What tools help us measure when it’s coming, how to make a plan, and how to access resources to “jump over” the cliff?

—What legislation, policy, advocacy, community events, or meetings with state agencies that oversee benefits programs could mitigate the cliff?

To respond to the Cliff Effect on micro and macro levels, we are continuing our partnership with Leap Fund and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Both organizations offer tools and coaching for people experiencing the Cliff Effect.

Further, Circles USA is creating a one-pager on the Cliff Effect for community advocates, to include key talking points for policy makers, employers, and community members at large.

Our National Big View Team has begun to rally its 2024 civic engagement resources, and we look forward to a robust Get Out the Vote campaign as we approachelection season. Following the election, Circles’ National Big View Team aims to create a plan to hold our newly elected officials accountable in the 2025 legislative session.

Key National Partnerships THE POVERTY SOLUTION with SCOTT C MILLER (SCM CONSULTING) Circles USA continues to work with founder and consulting partner Scott Miller on innovative pilot projects encompassed within a Poverty Alleviation System (PAS). New chapters have emerged from PAS communities, along with PAS pilots in Tennessee and Maryland.

In 2023, the Tennessee pilot launched three Circles chapters and plans to launch four more in 2024 to better serve its 14-county Upper Cumberland region. Hagerstown, Maryland, has a fully launched chapter as well, aiming for PAS level activities in 2024.

And St. Mary’s County, Maryland, has come on board to begin serving the public in 2024.

As these pilot sites develop, data will show innovations yielding the strongest results.

Circles USA will work to incorporate these new strategies across our community of practice in all of our chapters.

IDEOS INSTITUTE Ideos Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the work of Empathic Intelligence (MQ) and its application to empathy-based communications, remains a valued partner. After a successful launch in 2022 of phase one of a joint grant, phase two, in 2023, offered 10 chapters Big View leadership training in alignment with Ideos best practices. Based on this training and feedback from our chapters, Circles USA will launch the final phase of this three-part grant in 2024. We’ll collaborate to create a virtual Big View training course: an online tool to disseminate best practices, informed by Ideos’ key concepts and tools, for all our chapters to use with their Big View teams. Together, Ideos and Circles will increase our understanding of empathic systems change and our effectiveness in working to achieve it.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD Pairing a mission-aligned 501C3 with a 504 makes for a potent combination of influence related to the policies that impact our lives. Bread for the World has strong in-roads in DC and advocates in every region and state. For example, in Indianapolis, a Circle Leader is a facilitator of Bread for the World’s congressional district 7 team, leading outreach and growth efforts. In June, Circle Leaders and community members joined Bread for the World in Washington DC to share their lived experiences with elected leaders making a decision about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Circles USA continues to utilize their Racial Wealth Gap immersive learning simulation for national training of new staff and champions.

LEAP FUND In 2019 Leap Fund curated benefitscliff.com as a solid base to equip folks to quickly find metrics, studies, and data, as well as understand the policy ramifications, of benefits cliffs.

Additionally, they developed a calculator that helps recipients of public benefits understand whether they will hit a cliff, when it will happen, and how long it will take them to recover.

Circles chapters piloted their resources to better support those who are facing the cliff.

FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF ATLANTA The Atlanta Fed's Community and Economic Development department researched and created the three tools to uncover the barriers to and opportunities for improved economic mobility and make the data easily accessible for community planning and decision-making.

KELLOGG SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University hosted a conference “Bridging Social Class Divides” for researchers who focus specifically on social class.

Circles USA was invited to present our insights and practices related to working across class to support economic mobility and community building. Executive Director Kamatara Johnson shared the Circles model and impact followed by former Ally, now Circles coordinator of Circles Utah Valley, Helen Card and local Circle Leader Gaylene Hayes who shared the lived experience of how Circles bridges the class divide through intentional relationships and fosters economic mobility through social capital. The primary goal was to inspire this group of researchers to find topics rooted in lived experience. Dr. Nicole Stephens who made this connection shared great appreciation for the generosity of sharing and inspiration they received from Circles’ presence at their conference in June of 2023.

HOPE WIRED, HOPE RESEARCH CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA, TULSA Circles USA is proud to announce a new partnership with Dr. Evie Trevino, a quantitative psychologist with Hope Wired and the University of Oklahoma. Her and her team’s groundbreaking work in quantifying the Science of Hope allows organizations like ours to not only measure an essential predictor of success, it also gives us the language and action steps to foster more hope in the arduous journey out of poverty. We are just now in the planning stages for integration with our national curriculum and data upgrade in 2024.

Kamatara has grown into the ED position formerly supporting Circles USA as the Chief Learning Officer. With a master’s degree in organizational leadership, 25 years of experience in secondary education, and a deep connection with our Circles chapters, Kamatara holds the space for collaboration, innovation, and advancement for all the people in our Circles family.

YVETTE TRUJILLO Chief Integrity Officer Albuquerque, NM

As a systems thinker, Yvette focuses on improving the process of what Circles USA offers to its chapter members, maintaining the integrity of the mission, the model, and the work we do to build community to end poverty. Yvette brings 25 years of experience in for-profits and nonprofits, training, management, and systems-building as she supports the inner workings and outer expressions of Circles.

GENA ATCHER

Administrative Coordinator Rapid City, SD Gena began working for Circles USA in 2006. She manages general inquiries, materials distribution, contract negotiations, accounting, and events. In addition to fully supporting our national staff, Gena connects our chapters to resources, best practices, and each other to support our thriving network.

COURTNEY COWAN

Information Systems and Design Manager Lowell, AR Courtney manages Circles USA’s national data system and trains Circles chapters on how to use it. She also serves as a graphic designer for Circles USA and creates websites, logos, brochures, manuals, guides, and reports for its chapters.

Our Board JOAN KURIANSKY

Board Chair and former Executive Director of Wider Opportunities for Women Washington, DC Joan is the creator of our 6-point Big View Policy Platform. She has worked in the social justice field throughout her career as an attorney; executive director of local and national nonprofits; and board member or volunteer at local, national, and international levels. Her primary focus is on the rights of women, including moving from poverty to economic security.

JIM MASTERS

Board Treasurer and President of Center for Community Futures Berkeley, CA Jim is president, director, and owner of the Center for Community Futures.

He has worked with over 500 Community Action Agencies and Head Start programs since 1966. Jim has developed and delivered more than 300 professional development and capacity-building seminars for OEO, CSA, NACAA, NASCSP, regional and state associations, and individual agencies.

JENNIFER PELLING

Board Member and Director of Tsuha Foundation San Diego, CA Jennifer is a founding member of the Tsuha Foundation. She believes in the power of stories to break down stereotypes, promote constructive dialogue, and engage people in social change. Her previous experience includes consulting and project management, homeschooling her children, and teaching at a charter school.

CHRISTY VINES

Board Member and President & CEO of Ideos Westlake Village, CA Christy Vines is an empathy expert, thought leader, and social commentator. With the Ideos Institute, she leads research in the field of Empathic Intelligence and its application to conflict transformation, social capital, communal resiliency, and servant leadership.

Circles USA honors the time Christy Vines has served our Board with distinction, offering powerful keynote addresses at our conferences and sharing the best of what Ideos Institute has to offer related to empathic intelligence and systemic change.

Though Christy stepped down from the Board in 2023, she remains an ardent supporter of Circles.

We will finish our joint grant through the Stewardship Foundation with great joy, co-producing a Big View training course for our national community of practice.
