“Achieving a sense of “rightness,” even in the most uncertain circumstances, is the motivating concept behind my sculpture. The work is fgurative but not about the fgure. Immersed In Fantastic Worlds

Acrylic on wood 100 x 100 cm

“My artwork, very far from any trend or fashion, is a testimony of my experiences and my deepest intimacy, and it explains part of my personal history. With the help of paint, brushes, spatulas, canvas, and wood as support I can capture and externalize all of this and transform it into an external to me object lasting over time.”

Marta Carceller, a prominent Catalan visual artist born in 1977, balances her creative life with her role as a mother of four. Operating from a quaint studio in her hometown of Sabadell, near Barcelona, Carceller’s journey in the arts is as vibrant as her heritage.

Initially embarking on an academic path in music, Carceller’s interests later pivoted towards Psychology, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Ramón Llull University. She further expanded her academic pursuits with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the same institution, and later, studies in Clinical Hypnosis at the University of Barcelona and Coaching at the University of La Coruña. This eclectic educational background has profoundly shaped her artistic lens, providing a rich tapestry of emotions to explore and depict in her work.

Despite being a self-taught painter, Carceller’s passion for art has been a lifelong personal expression and healing. His enduring support continues to inspire her artistic endeavors.

The isolation brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic became an unexpected catalyst for Carceller’s art. With renewed motivation and the encouragement of her children and partner, Alex, she fully embraced her artistic career.

Today, Marta Carceller’s work is internationally recognized, celebrated in various Contemporary Art Awards, and featured across numerous global platforms. Her creations have adorned exhibitions, fairs, and galleries from Spain to France, the United States, Japan, and beyond, showcasing her unique ability to touch hearts and provoke thought through her art.

“My paintings are primarily oil and watercolor on paper. I paint fgures that are linked through gesture, intention, and proximity and explore human bodies as archives of meaning, with a focus on body language as a signifer of desire, longing and absence. These works draw from the body and the environment interweaving fgural representations with spatial disruptions created through the emotive, material and psychological use of color and shapes.”

ROBIN ADSIT

“Being a fgurative artist, I am interested in the ability of images to express ideas, emotions, promote questioning and to make people think. My work often explores social concepts of struggle, justice, and transition. The human form is usually the storyteller and conduit to these ideas.”

Portuguese photographer based in Dubai, Ana Backhaus’ passion for photography is deeply intertwined with artistic expression, driving her to continuously enhance her creative insight. “Wood is my passion. I am fascinated by the shapes it can enable, its scent, its texture, and the comfort it provides. As a self-taught artist, I am drawn to the abstract. I particularly love working with curves and waves, as they imbue a soft and fuid sensation into my pieces. Preferring to work with my hands and minimal tools, I fnd inspiration in nature, often using reclaimed wood as my material of choice. It brings me great pleasure to breathe new life into pieces of wood that might otherwise be discarded.”

My artistic journey begins with drawing and photography, culminating in abstract painting; the latter profoundly infuenced by the Scandinavian artistic landscape and American Abstract Expressionism. In photographing the landscape, I fnd the elements of form and symmetry to be omnipresent, drawing a comparison between a symphony of the landscape and a musical score. “Mathematics is God’s own self.”

“Born in 1956, I’m often described as a marine artist, but my passion for science runs just as deep. I’ve had the privilege of engaging with prominent scientists, particularly in physics and mathematics, both locally and internationally.

This intersection of art and science fuels my work, which I’ve coined “Art on Science.” My debut piece delves into the most abstract and perennial question humanity grapples with: the concept of God. Its backdrop comprises three layers: the ontological existence, the purpose of human existence, and our inevitable fate.

Scientifcally, we understand the universe began with the laws of physics. Yet, the origin and nature of this vast natural order remain elusive. These laws, though not tangible, permeate every facet of existence—a testament to the omnipresence of mathematics. Whether you attribute it to God or another force, mathematics, the essence of these laws, stands as the universe’s creator—an incontrovertible truth.”

Upon this framework, I attempt to build an emotional connection between myself, the painting, and the observer. Comfort and chaos, safety and strife, power and stillness. “The narrative nature of my art can be described as ofering suggestions of associations for storytelling. Starting with inspiration, using the skill necessary to reveal the interpretation (subjective as it maybe) is a process of discovery that hopefully refects integrity in my artistic vision.”

“Shiny, colorful pills, like tempting candies, promise happiness. But I don’t enjoy life. I lack energy. I am unhappy, and I can’t paint. A doctor prescribed vitamins to restore my mental health...” How can we fnd happiness? What does happiness mean? The line between mental health and illness is very subtle. People seek happiness and harmony in medicines, consumerism, adrenaline entertainment, business, etc. Does this path lead to happiness, harmony, mental well-being?

Much like life’s wheel, individuals are nestled within structures of time and space, each with unique roles and intentions. Yet, zooming out, humanity’s collective patterns emerge, akin to the regularity of wheel spokes.”

“Painting serves as a spiritual discipline for me—an exploration of self-awareness and the synthesis of inner vision with physical reality. I draw inspiration from teachings that bridge spirituality and science, embracing both active and receptive forces. My rational soul seeks meaning in the evanescent beauty of radiant hues, structures, forms, and mathematical order. I fnd fascination in the light of suns, invisible gravity, black holes, and the cosmic expanse, as well as the delicate leaves of our Earth. These elements are the wellspring of my art”

“I work within a sort of literary/philosophical framework, so my reference points are the parables of Kafka and the aphorisms of Kierkegaard. Because elements determine content, the process of creation is both constrained and liberated by the available elements at any given time. It is the improvised procedure of choice, assembly, and judgment that settles the argument.”

“My art is a visual expression of facets of my life, whether it’s my surroundings, places I’ve traveled, or people I’ve met. I choose a subject because the composition, lighting, or play of textures inspires me. However, I also search for elements that will challenge me and allow me to play with my style of fracturing and extending lines to create a sense of movement. Once a sketch is put to canvas, I enter a world of ever-changing color blends. I invite you to enter this world of joy with me.”

Nature serves as a master example of overcoming, adapting, resisting, and reforming itself in response to changing environmental conditions. “My paintings have primarily focused on experimenting with and manipulating materials as a subject matter. Recently, I’ve been reworking these canvases by sanding them down and exploring the arbitrary marks revealed. I’ve aimed to limit what is added to the canvas thereafter. A visual vocabulary has emerged from images etched in my mind: photographs and drawings depicting everyday life—cracks in surfaces, shadows on walls, and traces of the passing of time.”

“I have long admired still lifes by Dutch artists of the 17th ce. Painted in a style as realistic as photographs, they provide a detailed view of Dutch culture. Today, I create still lifes in the Dutch style, as realistic as paintings, with my camera. While I never copy a painting, my visual vocabulary and approach to composition and lighting pay homage to the Dutch Golden Age. My work aims to capture the spirit of 17th ce. Dutch art and, through them, refect on our own culture.”

“My work is philosophically based, and my interest in biology and cosmology informs the subject matter. I create paintings of microscopic nature hidden from the naked eye: the layered interconnectivity that could represent the origins of life in a drop of water to systems in the vast cosmos. These micro/macro images, which are impossible to witness without the use of a microscope or telescope, are the vortex upon which all life depends.”

“My intention is to extol the mystery and majesty of nature through a collaborative process with paint itself: with no preconception, I contribute the space, color choices, and the materials and forces for the paint to interact with. The paint cooperates by becoming a distinct organic pattern or landscape that is always a surprise and something I could not have imagined. With this technique, the images are ‘real’ in the truest sense and beautiful but not necessarily familiar.”

With a desire to evoke a sense of place, I focused on the accidents of nature’s design, using strong compositional elements as a groundwork for my paintings. The resulting landscapes have a clarity and luminous quality that freezes time and place, allowing the viewer to escape, if only for a moment, to the tranquil world I have created.”
