Prior to the mid-1980s, kitchens predominantly featured “builtin” cabinets, custom-made piece by piece and crafted individually to fit specific spaces. But then a paradigm shift occurred and manufacturers started to mass produce standard cabinet sizes and types, selling them as stock products through wholesale or retail distribution channels. This marked the emergence of what we now call “stock” cabinets. In contrast, “custom” cabinets offer flexibility in terms of size, color, and door style, but they usually cost much more and are often of higher quality compared to their stock counterparts.

BY DAVID SLATER

KITCHEN

CABINETS

Stock kitchen cabinets come in standard types and sizes and are designed to fit together much like Lego blocks. While some are exceptionally constructed in a wide array of wood species, door colors, and styles, offering various cabinet functionalities such as sink bases, oven wall cabinets, microwave cubbies, angled cabinets, wine racks, and more, others may fall short in terms of selection or use lower-grade materials like MDF (think particle board). Fortunately, most good stock cabinets feature sturdy plywood boxes and maple or other hardwood fronts and doors from well-known manufacturers. The stock cabinetry industry has maintained affordability through mass production, and is able to meet the quantity demands of today’s market, when fewer young people are entering into the carpentry skilled trades. Its landscape has evolved considerably, with hundreds – maybe thousands – of

CRAFTING STYLE AND FUNCTIONALITY We all love our kitchens – they are the heart of every home. Despite this, the average homeowner only embarks on a kitchen remodel once or twice in a lifetime. As a result, many are either unfamiliar with the intricacies of a kitchen remodel or can barely recall the details from their last renovation, which might have been years ago. It’s crucial to note that the landscape of kitchen design has evolved significantly since your last remodel, and understanding the

cabinet manufacturers now operating in the United States, and much of the manufacturing being outsourced overseas to Vietnam and Malaysia. Consequently, stock cabinets dominate the market over custom ones, due to their affordability and availability. However, the one big catch with stock cabinets lies in their specific color and style options, usually limited to one or two dozen combinations. This lack of variety is unbeknownst to many homeowners. To counteract this limitation, good kitchen remodelers must offer multiple stock product lines to expand offerings so you have more options from which to choose. Another solution to overcome the constraint of limited selection is what is referred to as “semi-custom” cabinets. With this option, homeowners can choose any color and door style offered by the semi-custom cabinet manufacturer, thereby creating their own personalized combination. Companies employing this semicustom approach, along with producing cabinets in any size, essentially mimic custom cabinetry specified by homeowners and remodelers, but at a more affordable cost. So, what’s the best approach for your next kitchen remodel? If your budget is modest and you can find satisfaction in popular colors and styles, work with a kitchen remodeler who offers multiple stock product lines, and find one you like. On the other hand, if you have very specific ideas of what you want in terms of colors and door styles, then the semi-custom cabinet lineup may be ideal. For those seeking particular features and unique shapes across their entire kitchen, such as a built-in dog crate, a distinctive door profile, or all false drawer fronts on the island facing the living room, engaging a custom cabinet maker becomes essential. It’s worth noting that even with stock cabinets, your remodeler’s carpenter can customize certain aspects to ensure a proper fit within your home’s space. This common practice differs from incorporating custom cabinets, and a minimal amount of customization to stock cabinets won’t significantly impact costs, and is usually necessary. Lastly, keep in mind that there are third-party accessories available to enhance stock cabinets to further satisfy your needs and wants, including knife holders, spice rack pull-outs, utensil holders, pullout trays, and more. With an array of cabinet options available, partnering with a kitchen remodeler can be the best route to help you navigate the renovation process, helping you achieve the kitchen of your dreams without breaking the bank.  David Slater is principal and owner of Azalea Kitchens of Wake Forest. E

veryone’s situation is different. If your forced retirement happened only a short time before you actually expected to retire, you might not need to take any steps at all. But if it was a matter of a year or more, you may need to look into the following areas.

CASH FLOW: Obviously, a sudden, unexpected loss of employment will affect your cash flow. And if yours was the only source of income for your household, the situation could be especially concerning. Still, you may well have options that can help. You might find a part-time job, for instance. And if you’ve built an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses, now might be the time to tap into it. You also might need to start withdrawing funds from your IRA and 401(k), though, ideally, you’d like to delay this move as long as possible, as these withdrawals may be taxable.

BY TOM PIPER

FINANCIAL

FOCUS

HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE FORCED EARLY RETIREMENT? When you plan to retire at a certain age, you can follow a strategy that incorporates your investment moves, your health insurance, and other factors. But what happens if you’re forced to retire earlier than you anticipated? Unfortunately, this situation is not that uncommon. About 40% of Americans say they have been forced into retire-

ment, according to a recent survey from Edward Jones and Morning Consult, a research firm. If this were to happen to you because of a layoff, company downsizing, or a health issue, would you be prepared to maintain your lifestyle today – and in the future? 12

CIRCA Magazine

HEALTH INSURANCE: Health insurance can be a major concern if you face an unexpected early retirement. Once you’re 65, you’ll be eligible for Medicare, but what if you haven’t reached that age? Through the COBRA legislation, you might be able to remain on your employer-based health insurance for a while – typically 18 months after your job ends. However, COBRA is expensive – if you’re qualified, you might have to pay the entire premium for coverage, up to 12% of the plan, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. If you’re married, you might be able to get on your spouse’s health insurance, but if this option isn’t available, you could explore a Marketplace plan by visiting the healthcare.gov website. SOCIAL SECURITY: A forced early retirement could affect your decision on when to start taking Social Security. You’re eligible to begin collecting payments at 62, but your checks will be considerably bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67, depending on when you were born. If your sudden retirement puts you in a real cash crunch, you might have to start taking payments regardless of your age, but if you have enough in savings, or your spouse’s income is enough to keep you afloat, you may want to wait as long as possible so you can get the larger checks. Of course, if your retirement comes while you’re still several years away from Social Security eligibility, you won’t have to make this now-or-later decision right away. Being forced to retire before you planned can certainly be challenging. But by looking at the options available to you, in terms of finances and health insurance, you may well find choices that can help minimize the disruption to your life.  Tom Piper is a financial advisor with Edward Jones, located at 3607 Falls River Avenue, Suite 113 in Raleigh. GARDENING

GURU

G

BY PAM EAGLES

EMBRACING THE MAGIC OF WINTER GARDENING

reetings, fellow garden enthusiasts! Welcome to the onset of a brand new year … are you feeling the same excitement as I am? The anticipation is building with the arrival of catalogs brimming with enticing plant and gardening inspirations. For those not inclined toward gardening, how do you navigate the winter season? Well, let’s dive in! While the outside might seem dreary, this time of year grants us the chance to engage in thoughtful planning. Hopefully winter will bring some much-needed rains to replenish our water table, alleviating the near-drought conditions we’ve been experiencing. Fingers crossed and prayers said for a turnaround. If you introduced new elements to your fall garden – be it trees, shrubs, perennials, or pansies – be diligent about keeping them adequately watered. With all the trees’ leaves likely having fallen by now (except for a few Oak stragglers like those in my front yard), it’s crucial to keep them off the grass and other plantings. Remember, those leaves are valuable; compost them to create a splendid topdressing for your cherished plants throughout the year. I personally gather all the leaves, including last year’s pine straw (my preferred bedding mulch), mulch them with the lawn mower, and add them to the compost pile. For soil enrichment and natural nourishment, leave a layer of finely mulched leaves on your lawn to gradually work its way down. Are you contemplating creating new planting areas or gardens when the weather permits? Keep in mind that it’s entirely acceptable in our North Carolina gardens to commence such projects whenever the weather allows and the ground isn’t frozen or excessively wet. I’ve decided to downsize gradually, subtly transforming my garden into a more intimate “secret” space without drawing too much attention. If a particular planting isn’t thriving or meets its end, I’ve stopped replacing it. Our gardening companions benefit from the realization that we might not have the time we once did to maintain everything. This can be termed “Pass Along Planting.” Most of us likely have prized plants shared by special gardeners in our lives, each with a name and a story. Keeping a garden journal helps, and a spiral notebook with pocket folders is 16

ideal for cataloging plant identifiers alongside purchases. Speaking of which, I recently acquired an all-weather pen while scouting for holiday gifts. It writes in the rain, upside down – perfect for those moments when you need to jot down garden notes in the midst of upcoming spring showers or the heat of the summer. I’m eager to report on its usefulness in the future! If you planted bulbs in November, they should be making an appearance now. Buttercups and hyacinths will soon bloom, signaling the time to explore early spring garden introductions. Throughout the winter, I’ve enjoyed a mixed planting at my back door. If you’ve gathered your favorites, I’d love to hear about them. If not, consider exploring options like lemon cypress surrounded by Heuchera and accented with seasonal floral pops. Currently, one of my outdoor planters boasts bursts of color thanks to my hardy pansies and snapdragons, while another showcases a conical variegated boxwood alongside Heuchera and pansies. Speaking of outdoor planters, these provide a wonderful opportunity to add color and vibrancy to outdoor living spaces. In addition to the above-mentioned pansies, snapdragons, and Heuchera, consider these excellent choices for winter container gardening. – Winter Heather: Blooming from late fall to early spring, it offers small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, white, or lavender. – Winter-Flowering Camellias: Known for their elegant blooms and evergreen foliage, their flowers in shades of white, pink, red, and even bi-colored varieties provide a welcome pop of color. – Hellebores: Also known as Lenten rose, hellebores produce charming, nodding flowers in a variety of colors, including white, pink, and deep purple. – Dwarf Conifers: Compact evergreen conifers, such as dwarf Alberta spruce or Blue Star juniper, add structure and greenery. – Ornamental Kale and Cabbage: Both are cold-tolerant and provide attractive foliage in shades of green, purple, and white, adding texture and visual interest to winter planters. – Variegated English Ivy: This evergreen vine provides a lovely cascading effect. – Japanese Pieris: With clusters of bell-shaped flowers and attractive evergreen foliage, this is a versatile plant for winter containers.

– Red Twig Dogwood: Known for its vibrant red stems, this deciduous shrub is a winter stand-out. Plant in large containers for a bold and colorful display. – Red Winterberry Holly: Not only do they provide a pop of color, but they also attract local wildlife, enhancing the biodiversity of your outdoor space.

bloom, pot them into your mixed pots and then add to your landscape after they begin to fade. Do not remove the greenery as that will feed the bulbs for next year’s show. Additionally, focus on soil health by amending garden beds with compost or well-rotted manure. Healthy soil sets the stage for robust plant growth and vibrant blooms. If you missed the fall planting season, take advantage of the cooler temperatures to transplant trees or shrubs, giving them a head start before the warmer days of spring. And consider creating a focal point in your garden around this time with a burst of

While grabbing another round of chili fixings, you might encounter Primrose in the floral department of your local grocery. Pick up a couple and place them in a pot for your back porch or kitchen island – signs that winter won’t last forever will soon be everywhere.

When creating your winter planters, consider combining different plants for texture and contrast. Additionally, ensure the planters have good drainage to prevent waterlogging during winter rains. Let me circle back and reiterate the charm of Heuchera that I mentioned previously – if you’re not acquainted with or haven’t given these perennials a try, please do so in early 2024. With a range of leaf colors from lime green to nearly black, they’re not grown for their flowers – although they do send up shoots of tiny, colorful blooms. It’s the leaves that truly make these plants shine. Look them up during a cozy night by the fireplace, and come March, keep an eye out for them at your preferred garden center. The excitement is building! Once March arrives and spring begins to stir, kick off the month by pruning deciduous trees and shrubs, encouraging healthy growth and shaping your landscape. Keep in mind, if there is an early summer or spring bloomer included in your workday, this could diminish blooms for the year. This will be an ideal time to introduce earlyblooming bulbs like daffodils, crocuses, and snowdrops already emerging in garden center pots and even in the grocery store. These resilient flowers push through the soil, announcing the arrival of spring with their cheerful blossoms. If you do grab them in

The speakeasy was one of the most iconic symbols of the Prohibition era – hidden saloons where patrons whispered secret words through a discreet opening in doors to gain entry. Far from being exclusive to the common folk, even government officials would secretly frequent these covert establishments, often with their own private booths! To further avoid detection, cocktails were oftentimes served in teacups, adding a layer of disguise to the rebellion. It was during this era that the roots of mixology began to blossom. Bartenders, faced with the challenge of masking the harsh taste of poor-quality liquor, experimented with creative concoctions that laid the foundation for modern cocktail culture. Secret saloons with unknown musicians ushered in the age of jazz. Women stepped into newfound roles, becoming some of the first to drive cars, secure jobs, and engage in social activities in public settings. The spirit of rebellion manifested itself not only in hidden saloons, but in societal norms being challenged and reshaped. As Prohibition agents attempted to crack down on the illicit activities, people found creative and clever ways to skirt the law. Hip flasks, hollowed canes, false books, and the like became tools of evasion, allowing people to carry a bit of rebellion wherever they went.

Prohibition? The echoes of this era still reverberate in our cultural memory, and at the heart of this vibrant time was the pivotal moment in American history that not only outlawed the sale of alcohol, but also set the stage for a clandes-

tine world of rebellion and creativity. rohibition officially began at midnight on January 17, 1920, with the implementation of the Volstead Act. The dry spell was intended to quell the social ills associated with alcohol consumption – but instead, it birthed a lively underground culture fueled by bootlegging. This illegal production and distribution of liquor became a widespread practice, as the federal government did not have the means, or desire, to try to enforce every border, lake, river, and speakeasy in America.

Interestingly, the Volstead Act included a much-exploited loophole that allowed doctors to prescribe “medicinal” alcohol to those in need. Bourbon, a favored spirit, often found its way into these prescriptions. So, this January in the roaring 2020s, follow tradition and take the “Doctor’s Orders.” Let us raise a glass to the resilience, creativity, and rebellious spirit that defined an era, making the roaring ’20s truly roar.

DRIVEABLE DESTINATION

ESCAPE TO CLARKSVILLE ON THE LAKE BY SUSAN KYTE

A

re you feeling a touch of cabin fever this winter or seeking a quick adventure without the hassles of airport security and air travel? If so, look no further than Clarksville, Virginia – a charming town tucked along the shores of the picturesque 50,000-acre Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. A mere one-hour drive north up either I-85 or US 15 makes it an ideal destination for a easy weekend getaway or a refreshing day trip. Whether you crave outdoor pursuits like hiking, hunting, boating, or fishing; a romantic escape; a shopping spree; or a journey into the realms of wine, craft brews, and Southern history, Clarksville has something for every wanderlust soul.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY Clarksville’s roots trace back to the Occoneechee Indians, who, in their earliest days, held a pivotal position as commerce hubs along major trade routes. After English settlers entered the scene in the early 1830s, Clarksville became a thriving center for one of the largest tobacco markets in the United States. The transformation accelerated in the 1950s with the damming of the Roanoke and Dan Rivers, creating Kerr/Buggs Island Lake. Today, Clarksville is a testament to its rich history and offers a walkable downtown, unique shops, award-winning wineries, a craft brewery, local artisans, scenic landscapes, charming inns, and outdoor activities.

DOWNTOWN CHARM Upon arrival, take a leisurely stroll through the historic downtown district, stretching from 2nd Street near the lake to 8th Street. Browse unique shops like Grandfather’s Country Creations, a treasure trove of crafts, antiques, and gifts. The Corner at Two One Six, a wine and gift shop, showcases local artisan works. Their tagline “lovers of life, art, food, libations, and unique experiences” is truly fitting. Continue your journey along Virginia Avenue to discover more antique, gift, and clothing stores, such as Doodlebug’s, Hite’s Clothing, and A CROSS The Nations, an upscale women’s boutique. The Cottage Barn, an eatery and gift store, is the go-to for hand-dipped ice cream and candy. If that doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, Sugar It Up, a local bakery on 7th Street, offers cookies, cakes, and more, but is especially famous for its delicious, authentic crumb cake.

TWO NAMES, ONE LAKE A curious question arises – Kerr Lake Reservoir or Buggs Island Lake? The answer is both. While Kerr Reservoir is the waterway’s official name designated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (named for the North Carolina Congressman who pushed for the initial funding to dam the rivers that created the water basin), a dispute between Virginia and North Carolina officials resulted in the alternative moniker, Buggs Island Lake. The former, asserting its ownership of the dam, favored naming it after a venerable Virginia family, the Buggs, leading to the dual nomenclature. Virginia’s frustration with Washington officials’ choice of Kerr Reservoir led to a resolution in 1952 by the General Assembly, officially stating that henceforth and forever more, the waterway will be known as Buggs Island Lake in Virginia. Today, signs there still refer to it as such. 20

Honeysuckle and Rose wines (yet equally enjoyable are their Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonel, and Sweet Red). Three Sisters of Shiney Rock is unique in that it produces small-batch wines from grapes native to Virginia and other areas of the Southeast, including Muscadine and Scuppernong, as well as fruit wines, including blackberry, apple, and their pomegranate “perky poma mama.” The region’s newest addition, Lake Front Winery, grows concord grapes for Sangrias, slushies, and wine beverages.

Nature enthusiasts can explore over 18 miles of trails that meander through the woodlands and along the shoreline at Occoneechee State Park or enjoy a day at White Oaks Preserve. This 350-acre private preserve accommodates guided game hunts, upland bird hunting, shooting sports, fishing, bird watching, fresh produce picking, flora and fauna, and more. The more than 800 miles of shoreline around the lake beckon exploration yearround. Boat rentals through Clarksville Water Sports, conveniently located at the Occoneechee State Park boat ramp, provide a perfect opportunity for water adventures.

COZY LODGING For a romantic weekend, choose from Clarksville’s charming inns and bed and breakfasts. Sunnyside Sisters, a restored 200-year-old farmhouse, provides a delightful retreat. Cooper’s Landing Inn and Traveler’s Tavern, a historic inn from the 1830s, offers an award-winning restaurant, Traveler’s Tavern, along with a trellised patio, fire pit, and wine bar. There’s Delicate Flower, a 140-year-old Victorian bed and breakfast, and 216 A Boutique Guest Stay, a three-bedroom gem located on the second story of a historic building in the heart of downtown. It comes with a glimpse of the lake too. For a more rustic overnight stay, consider cabins at Occoneechee State Park or explore yurts and camping sites during warmer weather. Pet-friendly hotel options right by the water are also available at Clarion and Quality Inns.

BREWS WITH A VIEW After an exciting day of exploration or outdoor fun, unwind at Buggs Island Brewing Co., affectionately known as BIB. Kick back with a local craft beer on the heated patio or by the outdoor fire pits while soaking in the stunning sunset over the lake. BIB offers the perfect vantage point to appreciate the beauty that is Buggs Island Lake.

WINE TRAIL Just two decades ago, Clarksville had no wineries. Today, there are eight, with three in close proximity: Woodbine Winery and Vineyards, Three Sisters of Shiney Rock, and Lake Front Winery, each catering to a different palate. Woodbine is known for its bucolic tasting room and award-winning

SEASONAL EXTRAVAGANZAS Clarksville is not just a fall and winter destination; it’s a year-round hub of festivals and events from April to October. Highlights include the Wine Festival in April, monthly outdoor beach music concerts, car cruiseins, community theater performances, Lakefest (ranked in the top 20 festivals in the Southeast), and the Urban Slide, turning downtown into a giant slip-and-slide. So this winter, pack your bags, fuel up the tank, and hit the road for Clarksville. HOME CLEANING

RESOLUTIONS

FOR 2024

D

o you ever wonder why some people’s homes seem constantly – and effortlessly – spotless? It doesn’t necessarily mean they clean all the time. More likely, it means they hold to a set of attitudes and simple behaviors that, with a little resolve, you too can acquire. Here are 10 easy New Year’s cleaning resolutions that can make your home more consistently clean in 2024. 1. I will treat every possession – including my home – as an investment. This means committing to a level of maintenance that either increases or preserves its value. 2. I will always think twice before bringing new things into my home. Owning fewer possessions means less total cleaning and less likelihood of clutter. Plus, think of the money you will save when you think twice about acquiring new things.

24

CIRCA Magazine

3. For every new permanent item I bring into my home, I will remove something I no longer want or use. Do this all year long and you will never be faced with the onerous tasks of collecting boxes, packing up junk, and hauling it away. 4. I will prevent cleaning tasks from getting bigger than they need to be. You have a choice: clean more frequently with less effort or less frequently with more effort. Doing the former prevents you from ever becoming overwhelmed to a point of inactivity. 5. I won’t waste time cleaning ineffectively. Having the right knowledge and tools on hand always makes cleaning faster and easier. Commit to learning more about what works best for different cleaning jobs and follow product instructions carefully. 6. I will expect as much from others in my household as I expect from myself. No one is going to look back on your life and say: “What a heroine! She did every bit of cleaning herself.” Relinquish the martyr’s role and be amazed at what others around you are capable of contributing. Remember that giving gratitude – even for behaviors that are expected – is absolutely the best way to guarantee those behaviors get repeated for a long time into the future. 7. I will do one extra, very small, organizing or cleaning task per day. Today, maybe it’s 10 minutes purging the junk drawer in your kitchen. Tomorrow maybe it’s two minutes organizing the cabinet where you keep your food storage containers. The next day, perhaps it’s five minutes tackling your unmatched socks bin. Imagine the cumulative impact of 365 similar tiny tasks on your home’s overall feeling of cleanliness. 8. I will adhere to the one-year rule. If it hasn’t been worn or touched in a year – and holds no sentimental or investment value – out it goes. 9. Everything I bring into my home will be assigned a place where it belongs. Cleaning goes much faster when you don’t have to make decisions about where to put things. To decide where an item’s place should be, apply this simple formula: the more it gets used, the closer it belongs to the primary living areas in your home. 10. I will enjoy the aesthetics of my clean home. Take time to notice the smells, the shiny surfaces and, most importantly, the feeling of ease – and absence of stress – you feel when everything is just as it should be in your home. One last idea – consider hiring a cleaning service. Having professionals provide a detailed and thorough cleaning of your home on a regular basis will allow you to stay on top of your house cleaning and keep the sometimes neglected parts of it (i.e. baseboards, switchplates, etc.) sanitized, clean, and germ-free, ultimately contributing to a resolution of less mess and less stress.  Todd Nelson is the owner of MaidPro of the Triangle. FROM JERSEY TO CAROLINA

NAVIGATING THE SOUTHERN WINTER HOME MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPE

J

BY TRACY DUPLER

ust moved here from another state? This Jersey girl did too, about nine years ago. Let me tell you – home ownership here is quite different than up North ... especially when it comes to maintenance. The upkeep requirements for a home can differ greatly based on its location. As someone who has experienced it both up North and down South, I’m here to compare home maintenance in the Triangle area with what you might be accustomed to in your previous state. Hopefully, I can offer some insights to prepare and put you at ease for the upcoming winter months. One of the pivotal factors influencing home maintenance is the local climate. Here, we experience a humid, subtropical climate, meaning hot and humid summers and mild winters (yay!). In contrast, places like New Jersey have a diverse climate with toasty summers and cold, cold – too cold for me – winters. Fortunately, we aren’t shivering through the winters here while tending to our home exteriors. ROOF MAINTENANCE: The hot and humid climate here can accelerate the deterioration of roofing materials, resulting in more frequent roof repairs and replacements. I’m curious if this was part of your home’s negotiation process. I could share a list of findings from practically all my inspections, but that’s for another article. Frequent rain and high humidity levels can also lead to issues like mold and mildew. In contrast, the colder northern winters, with their snow and ice, can cause ice dams on roofs, potentially damaging shingles and causing leaks.

CIRCA Magazine

EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE: That green stuff on your siding, patio, or deck? It’s mold. Lovely, huh? The exterior of your home here may require regular pressure washing and repainting due to the high humidity and the growth of mildew and algae – even on brick. In New Jersey, homes need to withstand harsh winters, leading to issues like peeling paint, frozen pipes, and cracks in the foundation. I’ll take a yearly pressure washing over frozen anything any day. HVAC SYSTEMS: Here, air conditioning systems are crucial due to the hot summers, leading to more frequent maintenance and potential replacement. I have to be honest – since I’ve been living in North Carolina, there have been years when I’ve had my A/C on well into November! Alternatively, in New Jersey, homeowners rely heavily on heating systems during the cold winters, requiring regular maintenance and potential furnace or boiler replacements. LANDSCAPING AND YARD MAINTENANCE: The longer growing season of the South demands more frequent lawn care and landscaping attention. You’ll notice home stores selling plants as early as February, reflecting the extended period for nurturing greenery. In stark contrast, New Jersey homeowners must ready their lawns and gardens for the harsh winter months, involving tasks like snow removal and protection against freezing temperatures. Speaking of snow removal, leave those snowblowers to the fortunate buyers up North on Facebook Marketplace. All you need here is a shovel, and fortunately, sometimes it’s just for show. By noon,

that snowy or icy “blanket” is likely to be melted anyway. Our trusty shovel is still brand new, purchased – yes, you guessed it – nine years ago!

let them get “caught” in their garage, as they eat those pesky unwanted bugs that work their way in. The most surprising aspects of my relocation here were these small details I never considered – the green siding, the brown grass, and the phenomenon of snow days lasting only two hours. Yet, what I love is the warmer climate, the longer summers, and the fact that I am not freezing like Clark Griswold while decorating my house. I share these insights from my personal experience in the hope that these little tips can assist in maintaining your home seamlessly throughout the year, particularly during the winter. It has me missing the North, never! So get outside and enjoy our winter months – they won’t last long! 

And let’s not forget about your grass, especially for Bermuda grass owners – brace yourself for it to turn brown. Yes, it might seem unsightly, but Bermuda grass, a robust choice for builders due to its durability and low maintenance, undergoes a natural color change in colder months. Don’t worry – it’s not dead. Soon enough, it will revive, turning green and lush once again. PEST CONTROL: Both regions pose unique pest challenges. Our humidity can attract pests like termites, mosquitoes, and cockroaches, while northern residents may face issues with rodents and ants, especially during colder months when pests seek shelter indoors. Hiring a pest control service will eliminate a large number of these around your home. Want to know a little secret? Those lizards we have? Some locals

DILEMMA?

DESIGN TIPS, TRICKS, AND HELPFUL HINTS BY RHONDA BENVIE PLUMMER

W

intertime in central North Carolina often leaves us guessing – will it be a season of mild temperatures with a few flurries, or will ol’ Man Winter unleash the icy conditions we’re known for in this area? Maybe Mother Nature will show off and surprise us with a foot of snow, a rarity in these parts, yet one I have witnessed a few times in my lifetime. Similarly, design trends for 2024 mirror the unpredictability and uncertainty of the weather. With readers eagerly seeking insights for the new year, questions about the prevailing styles are on the rise. Here are a few our readers are asking …

Think clean, simple lines paired with the warmth of light wood and luxurious fabrics, showcasing a mix of textures like chenille, velvet, cotton, suede, leather, and wool. Typically, the base colors for furniture, paint, and the overall home aesthetic are neutral, embracing warm grays, tans, or warm whites. Colors are introduced through accessories,

rugs, pillows, and art. Despite its slightly eclectic nature, transitional design exudes a calming and comfortable ambiance. This style gained prominence post-2020 when everyone was staying home more and the focus shifted to creating homes that were light, clean, simple, and free from clutter. The key to transitional design is simplicity, and I

Q: I’ve been perusing design magazines and popular design apps, and it seems like there’s no definitive style dominating over another. What exactly are the trends for 2024? A: Trends in 2024 are remarkably diverse, allowing individuals to define their own styles. From my experiences at markets and while shopping for clients, I’ve observed that the styles are all over the map. However, transitional style appears to be a crowd favorite. Picture transitional design as the harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics – a style that isn’t as heavy and stuffy as traditional décor nor as cold and stark as contemporary designs. 28

dates depends on your home’s existing features, such as cabinet color, flooring finish, and paint colors. Gold is making a comeback, but today’s version is a warmer gold with a matte finish, steering clear of the brassy tones of the ’80s. Pairing gold with black can create a sophisticated look when done thoughtfully. Swapping out older pillows and accessories for more contemporary ones is another budget-friendly update that makes a significant impact. An interior designer can assist with these changes in a short period of time, giving your home a refreshed and modern appearance.

Q: Is gray here to stay? It seems to have been popular for quite some time, but it’s not my favorite. A: Gray is still a contender, but the trend is leaning towards warm grays with green and brown undertones. Tans and warm whites are making a comeback. Lighter hues are preferred for paint colors, often just a shade darker than the trim for a subtle contrast. Wallpaper is experiencing a resurgence, and creativity knows no bounds in its application. Ceilings are becoming popular canvases for dramatic focal points using wallpaper. Accent walls remain an immensely popular staple, providing a wonderful enhancement for many rooms. Murals, particularly landscapes, are swiftly making their mark, adding depth, serenity, and tranquility to any space.

Wintertime in central North Carolina, much like the fickle weather it brings, sparks curiosity and uncertainty. The design trends for 2024 reflect this unpredictability, offering a diverse range of styles where individuality takes center stage. The design landscape of 2024 encourages homeowners to embrace their unique tastes, making each living space a canvas for creativity and personal expression. 

Q: I want to update my home on a minimal budget. Where can I get the most bang for my buck while keeping resale in mind? A: Updating lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, cabinet knobs/ pulls, and doorknobs is by far the most cost-effective way to breathe new life into your home. If you’re still stuck in the shiny brass era, it’s time for an update. The color choice for these up-

best is yet to come – a season where our wardrobes can blossom alongside nature itself. Here are a few trends you can expect in the warm-weather season ahead. SHEER ELEGANCE: This spring, the fashion industry will be embracing sheer fabrics with open arms. As we prepare to shed those cozy winter layers, designers are offering us a delightful array of semi-sheer options. Think eyelet, mesh, and lace, for example. Whether it’s a semi-sheer pencil skirt paired smartly with a cableknit sweater or a sheer overlay dress, these transparent fabrics will add a layer of intrigue to your outfits. Imagine a semi-sheer tee layered over a matching-colored bra, but only slightly peeking out from under a coordinating blazer – intriguing yet approachable. From subtle hints in layering to bolder statements, sheer elegance is set to redefine our spring wardrobes.

THE ’90S REVIVAL: If the latest collections are any indication, a nostalgic nod to the ’90s is making a strong comeback in 2024. This time, it’s all about clean lines with modern touches. Picture high, square necklines and updated suiting and wardrobe staples. Minimalism is in the spotlight, and brands are embracing a sense of simplicity and sophistication. Capri pants are predicted to make another appearance as a more feminine and daintier alternative to our favorite trousers come spring. This season’s color palette has shifted from fiery red to calming shades of blue. Expect this soothing hue to dominate the fashion scene in the upcoming season. PEPLUMS REINVENTED: Peplums are back. However, they’ve been reimagined for a contemporary audience and have taken on an ultra-chic form. This season sees new peplums adopting a more sculpted form, accentuating the waistline and hips. Paired beautifully with wide-leg pants and full skirts, the reinvented peplum will add a touch of elegance to any outfit. OLYMPIC SEASON: In anticipation of the upcoming Summer Olympics, metallics are set to shine, with gold, silver, and bronze taking center stage. Drawing inspiration from the iconic polo shirts associated with the US Olympic Team and designed by Ralph Lauren, the polo shirt is set to be the tank top of the year. This athletic yet stylish look captures the spirit of the Olympics, making it a standout fashion statement for 2024. Once we are able to bid farewell to winter’s layers, spring will usher in a season of fresh, airy, and stylish ensembles. WELLNESS UNLEASHED A GUIDE TO WELL-BEING FOR FIDO BY VANESSA DAVIS

A

wagging tail and bright eyes are unmistakable indicators of a thriving, healthy dog. Ensuring the well-being of our furry companions goes beyond fulfilling their basic needs; it’s about nurturing their physical and mental wellness. Let’s explore the pillars of canine health, including dental care, grooming, and training. By looking at these key aspects, pet owners can pave the way for a happy, vibrant, and healthy life for their loyal four-legged friends.

Maintaining your dog’s health takes a multifaceted approach. Prioritizing dental care, staying vigilant about grooming, and applying positive training techniques form the foundation for having a well-rounded and joyful companion by your side. This approach ensures that your four-legged family member not only thrives physically, but also contributes immeasurably to the warmth and happiness of your household. To sum up, a wellcared-for dog is not only a happier dog, but also a wonderful addition to your family and a true friend for life. 

THE BITE BEHIND THE BARK

Vanessa Davis is the founder and CEO of Dirty Dogs Spa, with locations in Wake Forest (929 Heritage Lake Rd., Ste. 500), Raleigh (Stonehenge Market, 7490 Creedmoor Rd.), and Wendell (1932 Wendell Falls Pkwy.). For more information, visit dirtydogsspa.com.

Oral hygiene can’t be barked at when it comes to your dog’s health. Dental disease, prevalent in over 80% of dogs by the age of three, can lead to serious systemic issues. Combat this by brushing their teeth regularly with canine-specific toothpaste, and provide dental chews that clean teeth naturally through the mechanics of chewing. Annual dental check-ups with your vet will also help keep those canines sharp and gums healthy.

GLEAMING COATS AND NEAT NAILS Grooming is about more than keeping your pet pretty – it’s vital for skin health and overall comfort. Brushing your dog several times a week removes dirt, spreads natural oils, and prevents matting. For breeds with long coats, regular trims are essential, whereas those with short fur might only need occasional brushing. Don’t forget the nails – long nails can cause discomfort and even skeletal problems, so clip them regularly or discuss nail care with your vet or a professional groomer.

OBEDIENCE AND BEYOND Training is not just about teaching tricks; it’s an opportunity to communicate with your dog. It strengthens your bond and ensures their safety. Start with the basics: sit, stay, and come. Consistency is key in training – use the same command for each action every time. Positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, not only rewards good behavior but also encourages your pup to repeat it. Remember, training should be an enjoyable experience for both your and your furry friend, so keep sessions brief, upbeat, and engaging. 34

KIDNAPPED

MONKEY

FRUIT

BY BUCK BUCHANAN

I

t’s fascinating to think that the now globally popular kiwifruit wasn’t always known by its current name. Originally, it bore the moniker “mihoutao” in Chinese, which means “macaque fruit,” named after the monkeys that adore it, then, garnered the name “Chinese gooseberry,” a reference to its Chinese origins after it was introduced to New Zealand in the early 1900s. Regardless of what you call it, this delectable fruit has a fascinating and somewhat convoluted history that unfolds from its roots in ancient China to its global acclaim today.

With the new golden kiwi, New Zealand was ready to clean up the international market. However, the story takes a twist when a rogue employee of a kiwifruit farmer smuggled into China a number of golden kiwi vines. Within months, thousands of unauthorized orchards sprung up throughout the country. The ensuing legal battle has persisted for over 13 years, prompting New Zealand to explore cooperative agreements with Chinese growers, emphasizing quality and consistency options. The kiwi’s journey, from China to New Zealand and beyond, remains an

As the story of the birth of the now-known kiwifruit goes, back in 1904, Mary Isabelle Fraser, the principal of an all-girls school in New Zealand, successfully transported to her country some Chinese gooseberry seeds out of China. They were then given to farmer Alexander Allison, who planted them near his farm. Those trees went on to bear their first fruits in 1910. Fast forward to the 1950s, when, amid anti-communism sentiments, the Chinese gooseberry faced challenges in the world market, putting a strain on New Zealand’s economy. In 1959, Turners and Growers, a fruit auction house, chose to rename the Chinese gooseberry in order to convey the strength of its origin and, shall we say, reflect those anti-communism views. Thus, it became known as the “kiwi” – a flightless bird that had become the symbol of New Zealand. This name change became a game-changer for their economy. With this newfound “golden crop,” farmers began to cultivate new kiwi varieties, with disease-, cold-, and drought-resistant ones emerging and being introduced to the world. The Hayward, named after New Zealand pioneer horticulturalist Hayward Wright who developed it, has since become the best-selling worldwide, with it being the most widely grown in California. The kiwi berry is the most cold-resistant, while the crown jewel – the “golden kiwi” – boasts golden-colored fruit, low acidity, and is fairly hardy when it comes to weather, bugs, and fungus. 40

intriguing tale of agriculture, commerce, and international intrigue. Beyond the courtroom drama, kiwis are a nutritional powerhouse. These fruits are packed with antioxidants like polyphenols and carotenoids, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body; and vitamins A, K, E, folate, and potassium, contributing to bone health, skin integrity, and cardiovascular well-being. Kiwis are also renowned for their exceptionally high vitamin C content, surpassing even other citrus fruits – this is crucial for immune system support, collagen formation, and overall skin health. They are high in dietary fiber, promoting digestive health, regulating blood sugar levels, and aiding in weight management, and their enzymes – such as actinidin – assist in breaking down proteins, promoting efficient digestion and nutrient absorption. Additionally, kiwis contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants known for supporting eye health and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration. Incorporating kiwis into a balanced diet can contribute to overall health and well-being, offering a delicious and nutrient-dense option for promoting a thriving lifestyle.

– 2 cups all-purpose flour – 1 teaspoon baking powder – ¼ teaspoon baking soda – ½ teaspoon salt – ½ cup butter or margarine (softened) – 2/3 cup sugar – 2 eggs – 1 cup peeled mashed kiwi fruit (ripe) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 X 5 X 3 loaf pan. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, and set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time to creamed mixture, beating well after each one. Stir in the mashed kiwis. Fold in dry ingredients gently, stirring only

KIWI-TINI – ½ kiwi, skinned and sliced – 1 teaspoon simple syrup – 1½ ounce Mystic Vision Vodka (made in Durham) – 1 slice kiwi for garnish Muddle the kiwi with the simple syrup. Pour the vodka over ice, add the kiwi, and shake or stir (depending if you’re a Bond fan or not). Strain into a martini glass, garnish with the kiwi slice, and enjoy!  Buck Buchanan is the owner of Lumpy’s Ice Cream, located at 306 Wait Avenue in Downtown Wake Forest. Kiwis have a unique taste that combines sweetness with a mildly tart and tangy flavor. For optimal enjoyment, consume kiwis raw. While the skin is edible, it’s not particularly pleasant, so peeling is recommended. The inner flesh is juicy and succulent, offering a refreshing and tropical experience. The texture is smooth with tiny, edible black seeds dispersed throughout, providing a subtle crunch. The flavor profile is described as a blend of strawberries, bananas, and pineapple by some, while others highlight its tart and tangy notes. Either way, kiwis boast a sweet and subtly acidic taste that is both refreshing and delicious. They complement a variety of dishes, pairing well with fish, poultry, and beef. Moreover, they lend themselves to the creation of delightful desserts, jams, and even beverages, including wine and

CULTIVATING

CREATIVITY AND COMMUNITY THE ARTS RENAISSANCE IN WAKE FOREST BY JASON CANNON

Stories serve as the common thread that connects us all. From ancient myths spoken around flickering fires to modern narratives shared through various mediums, the essence of our experiences finds its most vibrant expression through the stories we tell. Indeed, at the core of who we are, we are made to share and connect through stories. Theater, with its live and dynamic form, creates a unique environment where

such tales are not merely told, but experienced. ake Forest stands as a testament to this intrinsic desire, thanks to performing arts institutions like the Firebox Theatre Company and the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre. Not only do their stages provide canvases for artistic expression, but also unique venues for the community to gather, create memories, and contribute to the town’s overall story. The Firebox Theatre Company, an artistic beacon committed to telling captivating stories through live theater, recently found its home in the Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Center, a 65-seat black box theater. Located above The Cotton Company in the town’s historic downtown district and affectionately known as “The Graham,” this charming venue serves as a creative outlet for local, professional artists in Wake Forest and from across the Triangle. This developed culture of professional artists not only enriches our community with quality theatrical performances and excellent theater education experiences, but it also supports artists within our community, giving them a stage and empowering them to create new work.

Recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the facility continues to provide more than just a stage – it offers a communal space where the arts flourish and the cultural identity of the region is honored. With its diverse programming, the Renaissance Centre is a magnet, drawing guests of all ages and backgrounds to share experiences. Here, memories are made and possibilities are realized. The synergy between Firebox Theatre Company and the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre exemplifies the power of storytelling, theater, and the arts. Both institutions contribute not only to the cultural vitality of Wake Forest, but also to the growth, engagement, and quality of life in our region. They stand as witnesses to the transformative influence of stories brought to life on stage, echoing the vibrant pulse of creativity and community. The influence of the arts on a community’s economy must not be understated. Indeed, theaters, concert halls, and performance spaces create a ripple effect of economic activity as patrons engage in pre- and post-show activities as a result of these events, such as shopping and dining in local businesses. According to a recent nationwide study released by the NC Arts Council, the nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $2.23 billion in economic activity statewide in 2022. This includes spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations, event-related spending by their

Equally vital, the Renaissance Centre for the Arts is a multipurpose venue that plays a pivotal role in the town’s artistic and economic prosperity. THE WINTER CHALLENGE FOR CAREGIVERS Winter can be especially challenging for caregivers. The cold weather can limit outdoor activities and increase the risk of accidents, such as slips and falls. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and social isolation become more prevalent during this season, affecting both caregivers and their loved ones. Respite care can provide much-needed relief during these demanding months.

BENEFITS OF RESPITE CARE IN WINTER

BY CARLA PAYNE

RESPITE

CARE

PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL REST: Caregivers often put their own health and well-being on the back burner. Respite care allows them to take some time for themselves, rest, and recharge. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of caregiver burnout. PROFESSIONAL CARE: While caregivers are away, aging adults are in the hands of experienced professionals who can provide the necessary care, ensuring their safety and well-being. SOCIAL INTERACTION: Aging adults often suffer from isolation during the winter months. Respite care offers a chance for them to socialize with peers, engage in activities, and stave off loneliness. PEACE OF MIND: Caregivers can relax and enjoy their break, knowing that their loved ones are well-cared for. STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS: Taking a break from caregiving can actually improve the relationship between caregivers and their loved ones. Caregivers return refreshed, and their loved ones benefit from the improved mood and energy.

TAKING A WINTER BREAK

N

avigating the challenges of caregiving is a constant, yet the winter months introduce a distinct set of obstacles for caregivers. The cold weather, heightened isolation, and added responsibilities throughout these months can noticeably affect the physical and emotional well-being of those in caregiving roles. In response to these seasonal challenges, respite care emerges as an indispensable lifeline. This essential service not only provides caregivers with a valuable opportunity to recharge but also ensures that their loved ones receive the continuous care they require. In the season’s demanding landscape, respite care becomes an invaluable support system, allowing caregivers to prioritize their well-being while maintaining the high standards of care their roles demand.

WHAT IS RESPITE CARE? Respite care is a short-term care solution designed to provide relief for primary caregivers. It grants caregivers the chance to step away from their caregiving duties, whether it’s for a few hours, a weekend, or even longer. During this break, aging adults receive compassionate care and support from trained professionals in a safe and welcoming environment. 46

COST-EFFECTIVE USE OF AN ADULT DAY CENTER Consider an adult day center as an excellent option for respite care, especially during the winter months. Adult day centers are equipped to provide care, social interaction, and mental stimulation. They can be an affordable and flexible solution for caregivers. COST SAVINGS: Adult day centers are often more cost-effective than other forms of respite care, such as in-home care or overnight stays in a care facility. STRUCTURED ACTIVITIES: Adult day centers offer structured activities and programs that cater to the physical and mental needs of aging adults. These activities can be especially beneficial during winter when outdoor options are limited. WINTER SAFETY: Adult day centers are equipped to handle the challenges of winter. They have proper heating, non-slip flooring, and professional staff trained to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of the participants. FLEXIBILITY: Caregivers can choose the schedule that best suits their needs, whether it’s a half day or a full day. This flexibility makes it easier to balance caregiving responsibilities with personal life and work.

HOW TO GET STARTED If you’re contemplating respite care, the first step is to research local adult day centers or other respite care options. Talk to the staff, ask questions, and ensure the facility meets your loved one’s needs. Many centers offer tours and trial visits to help you and your loved one feel comfortable with the decision. Taking a step back to prioritize your wellbeing as a caregiver creates a win-win situation for all involved. Your renewed energy and positivity positively influence your loved ones, making winter a season of warmth, support, and renewal.  Carla Payne is the owner of Aging Care Matters, LLC, is a certified care manager, and is southeast chapter president of The Aging Life Care Association®. your curb appeal with a fresh coat of paint on your front door, new house numbers, or a seasonal wreath. Make sure that gutters and roof lines are clean and in good repair, as these become more noticeable in the bare winter landscape. 2. LET THERE BE LIGHT. With shorter days and less natural light, it’s crucial to brighten your home throughout the winter months. Open all curtains and blinds to let in as much light as possible during showings. Verify that all light fixtures are in working order and consider adding more lighting to darker areas of your home. Warm, soft lighting can create a cozy and inviting ambiance. 3. THE WARMTH OF COLOR. While neutral tones are staging staples, warm accents can make your home feel more welcoming in the colder months. Think throw pillows, blankets, and area rugs in rich, warm hues like deep reds or earthy tones. These subtle touches of color can add a sense of warmth.

4. FOCUS ON COZY COMFORTS. Winter staging is all about creating a cozy and comfortable ambiance. A draped throw blanket over a sofa, a plush rug underfoot in the living room, or a softly lit electric fireplace lit during showings can make a significant impact. Show buyers how they can enjoy your home and its cold weather coziness.

STAGING TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR HOME IRRESISTIBLE TO BUYERS

A

s the cold winds blow and daylight dwindles, the real estate market faces its own seasonal transformation. Selling a home this time of year presents its challenges, but with the right staging strategies, you can create a warm, inviting atmosphere that will stand out to potential buyers. Here’s how you can make your home truly irresistible this winter. 1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER. The exterior of your home sets the initial tone for potential buyers, so make it count. Ensure safe access by clearing walkways and driveways of debris. Elevate 48

5. AROMAS THAT APPEAL. Winter is the perfect time to subtly infuse your home with comforting scents. Think cinnamon, vanilla, or baked goods – scents that evoke warmth and comfort, creating an inviting atmosphere. However, the aroma should be a background note, not the main feature. 6. HIGHLIGHT SEASONAL FEATURES. If your home has features that are particularly beneficial in winter, such as a heated garage, or heated bathroom floors, be sure to highlight these. These can be major selling points during colder months. 7. CREATE A WINTER OASIS IN OUTDOOR SPACES. If you have an outdoor living space, show potential buyers how it can be used year-round. Adding weather-resistant furniture, outdoor heaters, or a fire pit can help them visualize enjoying the space even in cooler weather. 8. SHOWCASE NATURAL LIGHT AND VIEWS. Emphasize your home’s large windows or beautiful views. Keep windows clean and unobstructed to let in as much light as possible and showcase the winter scenery. 9. SET THE STAGE FOR RELAXATION. In the primary bedroom, create a serene and inviting space. Luxurious bedding, soft lighting, and calming colors can help buyers imagine a tranquil retreat from the cold. 10. KEEP IT CLEAN AND CLUTTER-FREE. Winter tends to bring more dirt and debris into your house. Ensure your home, especially entryways, are clean and free from clutter. 11. TEMPERATURE CONTROL. Your home should be comfortably warm during showings. A home that’s too cold can be offputting, while excessive warmth can be just as uncomfortable. Aim for a temperature that invites buyers to linger and explore. 12. VIRTUAL STAGING AND TOURS. Finally, consider virtual staging options. High-quality, realistic images of your home, staged with winter decor, can be a powerful tool, especially for buyers who may be relocating and unable to visit in person. By incorporating these strategies, you’re not only making your home appealing in winter, but also presenting it as a desirable and welcoming space for potential buyers. As the season’s real estate market unfolds, let your property stand out as a warm retreat in the colder months, making it truly irresistible to those seeking a new place to call home.  Allison Caudle Abbott is the owner and broker-in-charge of Southern Lux Living, serving buyers and sellers throughout the Triangle. GET THE

T

BY WILL BARNACK

his January marks one year since Mom passed. My mother, Theresa, was an incredible woman. I don’t even know if incredible is a word appropriate enough to describe her. She was the type of mom who always made everyone feel at home. Sweet, soft-spoken, and generous. I can still hear her voice, calling out for me. I miss seeing the look in her eyes as she would say hello to my son upon the first moments of a visit. She was so happy to be a Nana. Mom was proud of her children and grandchildren. I don’t know if I ever got the chance to say how proud of her I was. I haven’t talked about Mom enough since her passing. I am unsure if that is a common part of grief, but it is important to carry on the memory of our loved ones. Mom had a tough life from the start. She was severely burned as a toddler, when a pot of boiling water tipped over on her chest, resulting in deep scarring she carried with her throughout her whole life. Still, she pressed on. Mom also had to wear hearing aids from a very young age, as she was virtually deaf without them. Still, she pressed on. She was a victim of multiple car accidents that left her back and body in disarray, even causing her to retire early. Still, she pressed on.

golden years with my father, who had been with her for 49 years. She never got the chance to live the rest of her life. Life is short. As the deadline for this article was approaching, another mom and friend who is near and dear to my heart passed away. Her name is Renee Turner and she was 55 years young. Renee was diagnosed with colon cancer five years ago. This crushing blow leaves behind three children, three grandchildren, and a wake of family and friends that got to experience the utmost pleasure in knowing her. A lifelong resident of North Carolina, Renee became a mother at a young age. Spending her early years as a stay-at-home mom, Renee had to navigate raising a child and keeping a household in order. Her resiliency carried her through the hard times, and eventually she decided to start a career and became a successful supervisor for the Department of Motor Vehicles. However, the most rewarding

Strength, resiliency, and determination are only a few of the many adjectives to describe Theresa Barnack. The best attribute of Mom, though, was her heart. She had room for everyone, and did everything she could to help people, consistently showing up, not only for her family, but for others as well. Neighbors, random people she met through teaching or just striking up conversations while running errands, friends of friends, it didn’t matter ... if Mom could find a way to help someone, she did. She led by example. Both of my parents did. And I see the impact it had on my siblings and I, as we navigate our way through this world now, without the comfort of knowing that Mom is just a phone call away. We can’t text her to check in and see how her day was. We can’t video chat with her to hear about the updates in her day-to-day life. Losing her left an immeasurable hole for the ones who were lucky enough to know her. Mom was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2022. Just over six months later, she was gone. In the blink of an eye, she was taken from us. She never got the chance to see her precious grandchildren grow up and become young adults. She never got the chance to spend her 50

job she had was that of a mother. The proof is in the pudding – her children. Renee raised three intelligent, strong, kind, hardworking children. She led by example, just like my parents. Renee poured her love and strength into her kids without reservation. She always put everyone else first. “Did you eat? Did you take your medicine? Have you talked with your therapist?” Renee’s selflessness stood the test of time. That is one common theme when I hear stories about her. I wish I had the chance to know her longer, but I will have to settle for the reminiscent recollections. Even in the short time knowing Renee, I got to see her tenacity and her undying love for her children and grandchildren, all while maintaining her humor. Watching her through her final weeks made me think about my own mother. A lot. These two incredibly strong women are an inspiration to all who have known them. In closing, I will leave a quote from a tribute to Renee by her daughter: “Today’s now, then, you would’ve still selflessly chosen to let time carry on, despite this hard season. You would say, ‘We are not to miss out on life’s best moments to avoid life’s lowest ones.’” The recipe I am sharing today is from Renee herself – her legendary banana pudding. across Johnston County, and beyond. The trick is in the pudding, French Vanilla, NOT banana. While I know this article is a detour from my regular, more lighthearted anecdotes and stories, I want to take this opportunity to remind you all that, as I said before, life is short – so get the dessert.

BANANA PUDDING Best if made the night before eating – 6-8 bananas (semi-ripe) – 16 ounce tub of Cool Whip – 5.1 ounce French Vanilla instant pudding – 11 ounce box of Nilla Wafers Make the pudding and fold in three quarters of the Cool Whip, adding more for thicker consistency, less for thinner. The remaining quarter of the Cool Whip, you can eat or save for future use. Although, calories don’t count when you are baking, so I say eat it. Slice bananas. In your dish, spread a thin layer of pudding on the bottom for the bananas to sit on. Then, you will have three layers, each consisting of bananas, pudding, Nilla wafers (with the final layers of cookies crushed and sprinkled on top).  Will Barnack is the general manager of The Butcher's Market – Heritage, located at 1898 S. INFANT FEEDING – A CRUCIAL STARTING POINT Infants struggling with feeding issues may be dealing with a tongue or lip tie. These conditions occur when the strip of skin connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth is unusually tight. This can hinder a baby’s ability to latch onto the breast or bottle, causing discomfort and frustration for both baby and parent. Identifying these ties early and addressing them with a laser frenectomy can make a world of difference in a baby’s feeding journey, ensuring they receive vital nutrients and creating a stress-free experience for new parents. I have been privileged to help hundreds of patients over the years, including, most recently, my own one-month old granddaughter (pictured) who had a tongue-tie that prevented her from feeding properly prior to the procedure.

TEETH SPACING AND GUM HEALTH You might be surprised to learn that tongue and lip ties can also have long-term effects on dental health. When these ties restrict tongue movement, it can lead to issues like gaps between teeth or gum recession, where the gums pull away from the teeth. Over time, this can impact the stability of your teeth and even increase the risk of gum disease. A laser frenectomy can release these restrictions, allowing for proper oral function and a beautiful smile.

SPEECH DEVELOPMENT Speech issues are another common consequence of tongue and lip ties. From childhood to adulthood, these conditions can hinder articulation, leading to speech impediments. Laser frenectomies provide an accessible solution to release these restrictions, improving speech clarity and boosting confidence in communication.

TAKING THE ICE CREAM TEST Curious if you or a loved one might have a tongue or lip tie? Try the “ice cream test.” Can you comfortably lick an ice cream cone from bottom to top? If you find it challenging or impossible, this may be a sign of a restriction. While this test can give you a preliminary idea, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and guidance on whether a laser frenectomy is needed. Tongue and lip ties are not just small, insignificant issues; they can have far-reaching consequences. Laser frenectomies offer a minimally invasive and highly effective solution, providing relief and freedom for people of all ages. Whether it’s for infant feeding, dental health, or speech development, addressing these ties can unlock a world of possibilities and improve your overall quality of life. So, don’t let those restrictions hold you back – it’s time to break free and embrace a healthier, happier you.  Dr. Macon Singletary, periodontist at North Raleigh Periodontics, is a diplomate with the American Board of Periodontology, and has been improving smiles in the Raleigh area for over 25 years. THE SOOTHING

TRUTH

ABOUT SEDATION DENTISTRY BY DR. EDMOND SUH

A trip to the dentist often falls low on the list of favorite activities for people. The anticipation of pain and discomfort has led to the development of numerous myths surrounding dental care, deterring individuals from incorporating routine checkups into their healthcare regimen. Unfortunately, waiting until it’s too late for preventive measures can turn what could have been a pain-free experience into an

W uncomfortable one.

hen dental issues are left unaddressed, they may escalate and turn into issues that have to be fixed with procedures that involve sedation. This approach, tailored to cater to varying levels of anxiety, has redefined the dental experience for countless patients, ensuring that oral health is prioritized without compromising comfort.

IT’S NOT SOLELY FOR EXTREME CASES. While it’s commonly misconstrued that sedation dentistry is exclusively for individuals with severe dental phobia, in reality, sedation options can be customized to address diverse anxiety levels. Whether you experience mild nervousness or severe fear, it offers customizable solutions to ensure a relaxed and stress-free dental experience. So no matter if you’re facing an extraction, a filling, wisdom teeth removal, or simply a routine checkup, the flexibility of sedation dentistry means it can be employed for a number of dental treatments. THE TRUTH BEHIND LAUGHING GAS. A commonly known form of sedation is laughing gas, or nitrous oxide. Many individuals wonder if dentists still use laughing gas for sedation. While this gas does induce relaxation, it no longer holds the popularity it once

However, despite its use to alleviate stress and anxiety, oftentimes when it comes to dental procedures, the mention of sedation can evoke fear and uncertainty in some. The first question that often arises is, “Is sedation dentistry dangerous?” Contrary to common misconceptions, sedation dentistry is a routine and safe part of dental care, regularly used by specialists. If your dentist recommends a procedure involving sedation dentistry, put the brakes on your initial myths-based fear and get to know the truth instead. IT’S SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. Concerns about the safety of sedation dentistry persist, but advancements in techniques have significantly improved safety protocols. Licensed and trained dental professionals closely monitor patients throughout the entire process, ensuring their well-being. It’s a widely accepted and safe practice, often used for various dental procedures, including routine cleanings and complex surgeries. 56

did, with other more advanced sedation methods now preferred.

for adults. However, it can be a valuable option for pediatric dentistry. Children with dental anxiety or special needs may benefit from sedation, allowing them to receive the necessary dental care without fear or discomfort.

Laughing gas relaxes patients into a state of uncaring concern, potentially making them say things they don’t mean due to the removal of internal filters. However, it’s important to note that patients are still conscious during the procedure, but the chances of talking are minimized as mouth movement is restricted, and the effects wear off quickly after treatment.

DISPELLING THE MYTH OF COSTLY SEDATION. The fear of a hefty dental bill should never prevent anyone from seeking necessary dental procedures. Different methods of sedation cater to various budgets, and advancements in technology have made sedation ingredients more accessible and cost-effective. Patients are encouraged to discuss their financial concerns with their dentist to explore affordable options.

LAUGHING GAS VS. ANESTHESIA. When considering sedation options, laughing gas administered through a tube is often requested due to its non-invasive nature. However, there are pros and cons to this form of sedation. An alternative is anesthesia in the form of IV sedation dentistry, administered through a needle. If needles don’t trigger anxiety, IV sedation provides almost immediate relaxation as the medicine goes directly into the bloodstream.

Sedation dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and the cost can vary depending on the chosen method. Thanks to technological advancements, sedation has become more affordable, making it accessible to a broader range of patients. Engaging in open conversations with your dentist about your concerns and financial considerations can lead to a tailored approach that suits both your oral healthcare needs and your budget.

Alternatively, conscious oral sedation is another route. With this option, you will take a gentle, yet effective, prescription sedative – as it takes some time for the sedation to take effect, your doctor will give you instructions as to the exact time it should be ingested. Since it’s taken in advance of arrival to the office, it will be necessary for a companion to drive you to your appointment, as you will be relaxed and possibly drowsy upon arrival. Your doctor may provide an additional sedative, depending upon the circumstances. You can listen to music or watch movies while your dental work is completed – totally stress-free!

Sedation dentistry is a reassuring option for individuals seeking a calm and comfortable dental experience. By understanding the reality of it, patients can make informed decisions that prioritize their oral health and overall well-being. It’s time to embrace the soothing truth of sedation dentistry and transform the dental experience into a positive journey toward optimal oral health. 

Understanding the benefits and disadvantages of each sedation method allows patients to make informed decisions based on their comfort levels and preferences. Your dentist can guide you through these options, ensuring a personalized and stressfree experience.

As always, come to the emergency department if you think you are having a medical emergency. In an emergency setting, top priority is given to anyone affected by a life-threatening illness, trauma, or injury. That’s why for minor illness or injuries, urgent care, primary care, or even telemedicine visits are often the best approach for treatment. It will save time, money, and critical resources to truly help someone in need of potentially life-saving emergency care. Following are tips to help you decide whether you need to head to the emergency room, the nearest urgent care location, or your primary care doctor.

PRIMARY CARE The best way to take control of your health is to develop a relationship with a primary care physician. Primary care providers can help you protect yourself and your family during cold and flu season. Most primary care physicians leave room in their schedule for “sick” visits from their regular patients. If you have flu-like symptoms or are seeking a COVID test, you should contact your primary care physician. This is especially true for the very young, very old, pregnant women, people with a BMI greater than 40, and people with underlying health conditions like asthma or COPD. If you are a higher-risk individual, it is a good idea to visit a primary care physician if you think you have the flu, RSV, or COVID.

very winter, local emergency departments see an increase in visits for flu-like symptoms. Sometimes, it’s obvious when to go to the ER, but other times, it can be more difficult to tell. Primary care, urgent care, and emergency care all have different abilities, specialties, and purposes.

URGENT CARE AND VIRTUAL VISITS If it’s after hours or your primary care doctor is unavailable, you should visit an urgent care office for non-emergent respiratory illnesses. They generally treat a range of common illnesses and conditions, and it’s a cost-effective alternative to emergency care. For simple health problems, consider a virtual visit, an option that lets you talk with a doctor without leaving home. If it’s determined during your virtual visit that you need to be seen in-person, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or visit an urgent care.

EMERGENCY CARE In a life-threatening situation, always call 911 or go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Wake Forest 3619 Rogers Road 919-556-5972

If your flu-like symptoms are more severe, it may warrant a trip to the emergency department. Examples of severe symptoms include difficulty breathing, chest or abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion, severe vomiting, and high fevers.

PLANNING AND PREVENTION While sickness can’t always be avoided, planning and prevention are the best defenses against illness. Eat well, get plenty of rest, avoid sick people, wash your hands frequently, get your flu and COVID vaccines, and if you’re sick, stay home! It takes the community to ensure everyone has access the right care, at the right time, at the right place.  With multiple locations, WakeMed Urgent Care providers treat common illnesses and conditions – seven days a week – for adults and kids ages four months and up. Urgent care is also a cost-effective alternative to emergency care. WakeMed is also home to seven emergency departments across Wake County, including the area’s only dedicated Children’s Emergency Department. WINNING STRATEGIES

FOR DEALING WITH GAME-DAY STRESS

W

atching the big game and other sporting events can cause game-day stress. Let’s look at how stress affects the body and how it should be managed. We want your heart to be the real winner this year!

GOOD STRESS VS. BAD STRESS

We all experience stressful moments; however, leaving that stress unchecked can create health issues or cause existing medical problems to worsen and be more difficult to treat. Dr. Douglas Friedman, cardiologist with WakeMed Heart & Vascular, says that it’s important to know the difference between emotional and physical stress, and how they affect the body. Some stress is good, but keep the bad in check.

LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD Stress becomes a problem when it interferes with your life, causing disturbances in sleep, attention span, and behavior. Physically, stress can trigger muscle tension, headache, respiratory symptoms, and illnesses. “I see the effects of stress all the time in our cardiology practice,” says Dr. Friedman. “Many experience palpitations or the sensation that their heart is beating hard or irregularly, and some people even develop chest pains.”

“Physical stress, like routine exercise, is good for the body and is overall recommended with your doctor’s guidance. However, short bursts of intense exercise or strenuous activity can increase the risk of an in-the-moment cardiac event, particularly for those who don’t exercise regularly. A classic example is shoveling snow. Emotional stress is something we experience on a psychological level, but it can also cause physical changes in our body,” explains Dr. Friedman. “Stressors will lead to an increase in ‘stress hormones’ and result in biochemical changes that can impact our long-term heart health.” In extreme cases, an emotional stressor can lead to a life-threatening heart condition known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or broken heart syndrome. “Clinically, it’s identical to a massive heart attack.” says Dr. Friedman. “Most commonly, it occurs after a tragedy, although there are cases of broken heart syndrome after more ‘ordinary’ occurrences – for example, when one’s beloved sports team loses.” 64

MAKE HEART HEALTHY GAME DAY SNACKS Unhealthy food can put stress on the heart and other organs. Healthful eating, on the other hand, can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. It can also boost a person’s mood and provide more energy. As you’re prepping your game day treats, swap out greasy, fried, salty, and sugary snacks for healthier choices. – CHANGE OUT THE DRESSING: Swap ranch dip for a hummus dip to go with your veggies. Hummus is packed with fiber to keep you full and contains heart-healthy ingredients, such as chickpeas, to help reduce “bad” cholesterol (LDL). – SWEET SNACK SWAPS: Cookies, brownies, and other treats are bound to make their way into the typical snack lineup for game day, but let’s think healthier. Grapes, berries, and cubed watermelon are sweet and nutritious snacks to nibble on. Fruit will satisfy your sweet tooth while providing vitamins and fiber to keep you feeling satisfied and hydrated. If you don’t have time to cube and prepare fruit, buy containers of pre-cut fruits at the market. Put them on skewers, drizzle with dark chocolate, or make fruit salad cups. – BBQ WINGS DONE RIGHT: Sure, we all love the fried wings that are served on game day, but let’s try something different this year. For a heart-healthy alternative, opt for chicken, pork, or lean beef skewers. Make your own and skip the sauce. Try some broiled chicken skewers or sweet spiced pork kebabs. Enjoy your skewers with crunchy, fiber-rich celery or your favorite vegetable to help keep you feeling full and satisfied through halftime. – TAKE A TIME-OUT ON HIGH CALORIE, SUGARY DRINKS: Sodas, beer, wine, and other high calorie sugary drinks are the go-to during the big game. Instead, keep your alcohol intake moderate and try to choose drinks with fewer calories, like flavored bubbly water. Make homemade flavored waters using fresh fruit to limit your caloric intake through beverages and curb your sweet cravings.

BE YOUR BEST COACH Feeling more stressed at times other than game day? To help you manage, here are a few tips: – Identify the stressor and try to minimize its impact. – Get regular exercise. Even short walks can reduce stress. – Take a personal time out. Relax, meditate, pursue a hobby, and get enough sleep. – Stay in touch with family and friends. They can support you and help distract you from stressors. – Feeling anxious or stressed? Talk about it with a healthcare professional.  For more health wellness tips and delicious and healthy recipes, visit the WakeMed Voices blog (where you can also subscribe) at wakemedvoices.com. BREATHE EASY SIMPLE STEPS TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE INDOOR AIR POLLUTION BY ALLEN MITCHELL

In every home, indoor air pollution is an unseen concern, impacting our health more than we realize. In fact, according to the American College of Allergists, 50% of illnesses are either caused or worsened by polluted indoor air. As colder weather confines us indoors, the threats intensify – from pet dander to oxygen-consuming candles and fireplaces that produce increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) to air fresheners that put off elevated VOCs and PM2.5 particles. Not to mention cold and flu season this time of year, as well as the evolving seasons heightening the risk of allergies. Combatting the seasonal challenges requires proactive measures to ensure our homes are healthy and

D

ready for this annual battle. uring the winter months, a significant challenge arises from heightened CO2 levels, due to our homes being tightly sealed and closed up to ward off the cold. As we exhale, CO2 is released – and when our living spaces are overly sealed, we slowly deplete the oxygen in our homes that our bodies so desperately need. Higher CO2 levels make us feel tired, sleepy, and confused (now you know why we sleep so much this time of year). While it’s impossible to completely stop this annual process, we can reduce the contaminant levels in our homes and minimize the impact on our overall health. A crucial step is for every homeowner to have an indoor air quality monitor. This tool provides insights into the contaminants or issues within your home, enabling you to make informed decisions about necessary corrections and improvements. These monitoring devices are available from a number of sources or can be expertly installed by your trusted HVAC provider. 68

In addition to employing an indoor air quality monitor, safeguarding the air you breathe at home involves implementing a range of proactive measures, including the following. Have your HVAC system serviced annually. The North Carolina Alternative Energy Corporation revealed that a staggering 90% of HVAC systems tested exhibited some sort of “energy-wasting, comfort-robbing problem.” Considering your air conditioner runs for approximately 1,239 hours during the cooling season, which is equivalent to driving from Raleigh to San Francisco 26 times at 60 mph, it’s crucial to prioritize maintenance. While we diligently check our cars for oil, tires, and gas before embarking on long journeys, we often neglect similar attention to our air conditioners. Schedule a service where a technician can assess the efficiency of your unit and implement necessary improvements. Have the ductwork inspected for damage and deficiencies. Our technicians routinely encounter ductwork in crawlspaces and attics that is broken, disassembled, damaged by animals, and leaking. The Department of Energy estimates that typical HVAC systems lose 25-40% of conditioned air that is flowing through them due to such issues. When leaks occur on the supply side, we unintentionally cool off spaces like the attic or crawlspace. Even more concerning, if the leaks are on the return side, we end up pulling pollutants such as dust, pollen, mold, and mildew from these areas into our homes. Change your air filters regularly. Air filters only collect debris from the air inside our homes when the air conditioner is operating. Therefore, as the heat rises outside, these filters tend to accumulate dirt more frequently. Dirty air filters not only compromise air quality, they also hamper the efficiency of the air conditioner. To ensure optimal performance, I recommend a monthly inspection of your air filters, and replacing them every 45 to 60 days (or more frequently if you have indoor pets or families with allergies). Additionally, for homes with pets or allergy-prone children, consider whole-house electronic air cleaners like the Trane CleanEffects.

Have your home evaluated for infiltration (leaks) in the windows, doors, walls, floors, etc. Conducting an energy audit will give you a much better understanding of how much unconditioned and unfiltered air is coming into and leaking out of your home. Identifying and addressing these leaks is critical to improving your home’s health and reducing heating and cooling expenses. Consumer Reports recommends using an energy auditor certified by the Building Performance Institute. Consider an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) to bring fresh clean air into your home. An ERV recovers the energy from the exhaust air to condition the fresh air coming into your home. It also acts as an air filter, effectively removing airborne pollutants. As you turn on your bath and stove fans to eliminate moisture and odors, the makeup air coming into the home to balance this exhaust is coming through the previously mentioned cracks and leaks. An ERV will condition and filter this makeup air, contributing to a healthier environment for your home. Consider a REME HALO or HALO-LED air purifier. RGF Environmental Group’s REME HALO-LED stands out as the first LED in-duct, whole-home and building air purification system that is both mercury-free and zero ozone compliant. This system proactively treats every cubic inch of air-conditioned space, effectively reducing airborne and surface contaminants. Key features include a durable, replaceable LED cell module with a lifespan that is two and a half times longer than conventional mercury vapor UV lamp technologies. It also introduces an industry-first washable catalyst for high-load environments. This system excels in reducing a spectrum of pollutants, from microbials and mold to smoke, odors, VOCs, allergens, dust, and particulate matter. Backed by a seven-year limited warranty, the REME HALO-LED is a robust and reliable addition to your home’s duct system.  Allen Mitchell is Mitchell Heating & Cooling’s mechanical, electrical, and general contractor license holder. G

laucoma encompasses a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the cable that transports visual information from the eye to the brain. The most prevalent types of glaucoma gradually damage the optic nerve over time without causing pain, with up to 40% of vision loss occurring before it becomes apparent. Two primary types are primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and angle-closure glaucoma, both characterized by elevated eye pressure. POAG can even occur with normal eye pressure, posing challenges in diagnosis and management. Other forms of glaucoma may arise from underlying diseases. Vision loss from glaucoma typically begins with peripheral or side vision lost first, often going unnoticed since it may affect one eye more than the other. Regular eye check-ups are the best defense against glaucoma, as signs can be detected during a comprehensive eye examination. A non-invasive instrument that causes no discomfort measures eye pressure, and the optic nerve is evaluated through photographs and direct examination. Early detection is crucial, and additional testing can determine the level of risk or the need for treatment.

or two daily eye drops that maintain safe eye pressure and prevent glaucoma progression. In more advanced cases, surgical interventions may be necessary. Screening for glaucoma is especially vital for those with risk factors such as age over 60, a family history, high near-sightedness or far-sightedness, diabetes, sleep apnea, and African American or Hispanic heritage. Diabetes can cause microvascular changes inside the eye, sleep apnea reduces blood flow to the optic nerve, and unique ocular anatomy in those with extreme nearsightedness or far-sightedness can make the optic nerve more susceptible to glaucoma. It is a significant cause of blindness in African Americans, being six to eight times more common in this population compared to Caucasians, and it is also more prevalent among Hispanic individuals. For those diagnosed with glaucoma, spreading awareness to family members is essential, so be sure to encourage them to schedule their screening. While treatments can slow down the disease’s progression, there is no cure, emphasizing the importance of early detection through eye exams. The key takeaways about glaucoma are that you will not know you have it as there are no symptoms and currently, there is no cure. Thus, early detection becomes paramount. Diagnosis relies on assessing eye pressure and examining optic nerves, making regular eye exams crucial. Although treatments can slow the progression of glaucoma, they cannot reverse optic nerve damage. Therefore, proactive eye care, including routine examinations, is vital in maintaining eye health. As we step into 2024, prioritize your eye health by scheduling an overdue eye exam – your vision will surely thank you.  Samatha Ward OD, FAAO is with McPherson Family Eye Care, located at 3150 Rogers Road, Suite 100 in Wake Forest.
