MASTERING THE ART OF FALL GARDENING

Happy fall, fellow gardeners! We have successfully navigated another North Carolina summer amidst our beloved gardens. I hope you journaled both your triumphs and your mishaps for reflection and learning for the next growing season. If not, consider starting now – it’s a captivating chronicle of your time spent nurturing your garden.

Did you plant a fall garden? If so, surely you are enjoying the sight of fresh plants popping through the soil and the excitement of a bountiful harvest not too far on the horizon. Personally, I am monitoring the progress of cucumbers, corn, and pumpkins, as well as a few tomatoes and an array of greens.

As fall arrives, so does the call for garden clean up and rest for the upcoming winter season. I let everything that is surviving stay until the first frost takes its toll. On warm autumn afternoons, I uproot and compost what will not survive our winter stretch. A similar fate awaits the falling leaves, as I gather and add them onto my compost pile and my empty garden beds, rewarding me with the best soil as the leaves break down over winter.

Now is a great time to divide perennials, expanding our gardens and allowing us to share our beautiful blooms with friends and family. Hostas, daylilies, and coneflowers will make themselves happy in their new winter homes, prepping for a splendid show next summer. This is the best planting time of year for trees, shrubs, and perennials, as the cooler months promote root establishment and the chance to develop an extensive system, ensuring success next summer. If we do experience a fall dry spell, keep them watered!

Our lawns will pretty much take care of themselves now. In November, you will want to fertilize your cool season grass one final time for the year. Conversely, warm season grasses do not need fertilizing now that cooler weather has arrived, as they will be going dormant any day now. As with all plantings, if we are dry, water. Now is also the time to treat for grubs if you have noticed infestation … doing so will ward off the Japanese beetle invasion next June. We all that know that North Carolina’s autumn weather isn’t exactly consistent, so if grass is still growing, you can still mow.

One last thought – don’t let leaves smother your grass. Rather than letting them lie on your lawn, use your mower to chop them up. As I said earlier, use the broken-down leaves on your compost and to mulch and enhance other garden areas naturally.

The time is ripe for planning bulb planting. Spring bulbs can be planted November through early December, guaranteeing a great show next year. Peruse catalogs and visit local garden centers for varieties that do well here. Personally, I love allium – their many colors, forms, and sizes offer boundless charm. I plant them in both the ground and in pots, intermingling them with pansies, dusty miller, dianthus, and snapdragons. All are readily available this time of year. Whatever your favorite, plant a nook within your garden for future enjoyment on a chilly late winter, early spring morning.

10 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

For those potted plantings around your garden, perhaps they could welcome the addition of a conical boxwood and heurchera, or a Japanese maple with some annual underplantings. Are they looking a bit tired after a season of summer sun and heat? Snip some pieces of your favorite evergreen gems for a fresh fall arrangement – think acuba, nandina, and magnolia. These should last quite a while after clipping. Once the Christmas decorating season commences, incorporate evergreen boughs from your tree for an aesthetic and aromatic allure. Be sure to keep these clippings watered during dry spells to prolong their existence and give an extra drink or two to those thirsty yearround inhabitants. Another nice gift is the occasional bird who might be found taking shelter in your impromptu arrangement. Illuminate with some twinkling lights and add a lovely bow for a pretty holiday surprise.

Pansies and mums are everywhere now. To breathe new life into empty pots around your garden, fill them with these beauties in your favorite hues and sit back and enjoy their seasonal splendor. They can also be planted directly in the ground – your preference. If you opt for the pot route, make sure it is frost-proof to avoid a cracked container. Should the unfortunate happen, use the shards in the bottom of a new pot when planting, or turn it sideways in your garden and plant hens and chicks next spring. Remember, we gardeners are excellent and resourceful recyclers!

Along with December’s arrival comes the desire to bring the colors of nature inside to complement our trees and all the lovely lights and fandangles that hearken the holidays. Introduce a poinsettia –or five. Group a few together or display them individually in festive containers. Available in an array of gorgeous hues, showcase poinsettias throughout your home for a jolly pop of color. Keep in mind, though, that while not poisonous, you do not want children and pets to nibble them, as they may cause a stomach upset.

Cyclamen, amaryllis, paperwhites, and Christmas cactus will be readily available too. There is nothing more satisfying than pulling that sleeping amaryllis bulb out and placing it in an oversized vase, lulling it out of hibernation and into a beautiful bloom. Enjoy them as standalone showstoppers or cluster several together for an added wow factor.

Friends, embrace the essence of fall. It’s a time to reflect and perfect. Strategize for an improved upcoming planting season, or one of repeated successes. Plan to find something new and exciting and to share with others. Just as the garden is ever-changing, so are we, the gardeners. Happy digging! 

FINANCIAL FOCU S

START MOVING TOWARD RETIREMENT

It’s not as well-known as Halloween, but National Retirement Security week happens every October – the third week, to be precise – and while it doesn’t involve ghosts and goblins, it does deal with something even more frightening … the risk of not being able to enjoy a comfortable retirement. Through various events, this occasion highlights ideas about building retirement security. What steps can you take? Following are some suggestions.

Don’t underestimate your longevity. Consider this – 65-year-old men can expect to live another 20 years, while 65-year-old women can anticipate almost 22 more years, according to the Society of Actuaries. And these figures are just averages, meaning you could well exceed these ages, perhaps by many years. So, in thinking

about how much money you’ll need as a retiree, be aware that you could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement.

Don’t underestimate health care costs. When you retire, some of your expenses – such as transportation, wardrobe, and other costs associated with your career – will drop. Others will not, and may even increase. Healthcare is a prime example – many people assume that Medicare or their Medicare Advantage plan will take care of virtually all of their healthcare costs in retirement, but that’s not the case. Generally speaking, you could plan on spending $4,500 to $6,500 per year on healthcare costs during retirement, excluding the large expenses connected with long-term care. Your actual costs could be higher or lower, depending on your health, prescription drugs, and supplemental insurance coverage, but make sure you plan for sizable healthcare costs in your projected retirement budget.

Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement plans. Try to put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan and try to increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also be eligible to contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA, which offers tax benefits and a wide variety of investment options. (Contributions to a Roth IRA may be limited based on your income.) Once you reach retirement, you can still make some moves that could help boost your financial security.

Maintain an appropriate investment mix. When you retire, you might be tempted to shift most of your portfolio into highly conservative investments to “lock in” gains and avoid being overexposed to market volatility that could cause short-term losses. Yet, even in retirement, you should still own some growth-oriented investments that can potentially help keep you ahead of inflation. In fact, it’s important to periodically rebalance your investments back to your preferred mix to avoid taking too much or too little risk, so you may want to consult with a financial advisor.

Identify a suitable withdrawal rate. You don’t want to take out so much from your portfolio each year that you run the risk of outliving your money. So, you’ll want to determine an annual withdrawal rate that can reduce that danger. A common withdrawal rate to start retirement is 4%, but your own rate should be based on several factors: your age, size of portfolio, other sources of income, and so on.

It can be challenging to make all the moves necessary to help achievement retirement security – but it’s worth the effort. 

Tailgating is more than just a pre-game ritual – it’s a cherished American tradition that has woven itself into the fabric of sports culture. It’s a celebration of team spirit, a time for friends and families to come together, and an occasion to revel in good food, laughter, and camaraderie. Tailgating transcends the stadium parking lots – it represents the unity that sports can bring, bridging gaps between generations and forging bonds among strangers, all while indulging in the comfort of delicious culinary delights.

When it comes to tailgating, few dishes can match the hearty, comforting, and always crowd-pleasing appeal of slow cooker chili. Whether you’re cheering for your favorite team in a stadium parking lot or hosting a backyard watch party, a big pot of chili simmered to perfection is the ultimate gameday MVP.

One of the primary reasons chili is an unbeatable tailgate choice is its simplicity. Preparing this dish in advance is a breeze, allowing you to enjoy the festivities rather than hovering over a hot grill. Just gather your ingredients, simmer them together in a slow cooker, and you’re good to go. Once game time arrives, your chili is hot, flavorful, and ready to serve. Additionally, chili is perfect for feeding a hungry crowd and caters to various tastes. You can tailor it to suit different preferences, whether it’s a meat-lover’s dream with ground beef and bacon or a vegetarian delight filled with beans, veggies, and spices. You can also control the spiciness by adjusting the chili powder, hot sauce, or jalapeños, ensuring

COOKED IN TRADITION

SLOW COOKER CHILI ... THE CHAMPION OF TAILGATE FOOD

that everyone can enjoy the perfect bowlful. When cooked and served in a slow cooker, it stays warm for hours. Whether it’s for pre-game partying or post-game celebrating, your chili will stay piping hot, providing comfort and sustenance throughout the day.

Chili’s versatility extends to its accompaniments. For something a little more festive, set up a chili bar with a variety of toppings, including shredded cheese, chopped onions, jalapeños, sour cream, avocado slices, and hot sauce, and serve with cornbread, tortilla or corn chips, or

pita chips on the side. Tailgaters can customize their bowls to tickle their taste buds, adding an extra layer of fun – and flavor – to the experience. While the classic chili-in-a-bowl option is just about perfect in its own right, you can also enjoy its delicious flavor as a game-day dip, hot dog topping, or baked potato filling. Let your chili creativity run wild!

Of course, there are many chili recipes out there to please any palate. But here is one that my family has enjoyed on more than one crisp, beautiful fall football afternoon as we cheered on our favorite team.

14 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

SLOW COOKER CHILI

– 2 pounds ground beef, pork, or turkey (or any combo of the 3)

– 1 large onion, chopped

– 3 cloves garlic, minced

– 2 (15-ounce) cans kidney beans, drained and rinsed

– 2 (14.5-ounce) cans diced tomatoes

– 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste

– 2 cups beef or vegetable broth

– 2 tablespoons chili powder

1 tablespoon cumin

– 1 tablespoon paprika

– 1 teaspoon oregano

– Salt and pepper to taste

– Toppings of choice

In a skillet, brown the meat. Drain any excess fat and transfer the cooked meat to your slow cooker. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the slow cooker. Stir in the kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beef or vegetable broth, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cover and cook on the low setting for 6-8 hours or on the high setting for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally. Before serving, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you prefer a spicier chili, add hot sauce to your bowl when serving, or add an extra tablespoon of chili powder and ¼ to ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the entire batch for more kick. If the chili is too thick, you can add a bit more broth to reach your desired consistency. 

Please tag us on social media in any pictures of your favorite gameday chili creations. And please email any of your favorite tailgating recipes to us at info@circamagazine.com to possibly be included in a future “Cooked in Tradition!”

SEASONAL DECORATING

A JOURNEY OF TRADITION AND TRANSFORMATION

As the warmth of summer gives way to the crisp embrace of autumn, the world undergoes a magical change. Leaves begin their gradual transformation, displaying a dazzling array of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the air takes on a gentle chill. The arrival of fall brings forth a unique opportunity to infuse your living space with the essence of the changing seasons, guiding you from the rich hues of fall to the enchantment of Christmas. This journey of seasonal decorating is a wonderful way to celebrate the rhythms of nature and welcome a sense of coziness and festivity into your home.

Fall’s arrival beckons with its rich, warm, and inviting color palette. Deep oranges, rustic reds, and earthy browns become the stars of the décor show. By welcoming these autumnal hues into your home, you can create a cozy and inviting ambiance that resonates with the spirit of the season.

Kick off your fall decorating journey by focusing on key areas of your space. For instance, a rustic centerpiece adorned with pumpkins, gourds, and dried corn cobs can take center stage on your dining table, setting the tone for intimate holiday family gatherings. The mantel, a focal point of comfort, comes alive when topped with a wreath made of dried leaves, pinecones, and a touch of burlap –a rustic touch that captures the essence of fall.

Incorporating textiles that exude warmth is another excellent way to enhance your fall décor. Swap out light and airy summer curtains for heavier drapes in warm, earthy tones. Plush throw blankets and cushions in rich textures like faux fur or chunky knits invite your family and guests to snuggle up and enjoy the season’s comforts. Scented candles immersed with the fragrances of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg can further enhance the sensory experience, enveloping your space in soothing fall scents.

As Thanksgiving approaches, build on your autumnal canvas by adding elegant touches that reflect gratitude and togetherness. Create a beautiful centerpiece using a mix of mini pumpkins, fresh herbs, and seasonal blooms. Accentuate your dining table with charming place settings and incorporate metallic elements like gold or copper candle holders for a touch of sophistication. A rustic sign displaying the thankful sentiments of the season hung above your fireplace will create a heartwarming focal point.

As fall yields to winter, the holiday season approaches with a sense of wonder and excitement. The transition to Christmas décor is a beautiful journey that allows you to build upon the warmth of autumn and seamlessly weave in the magic of the holidays.

Begin by gradually mingling evergreen elements into your existing fall décor. Replace pumpkins with poinsettias and holly branches, intertwining festivity to your space. Your fall wreath can gracefully evolve into a Christmas wreath with the introduction of twinkling lights and a few festive ornaments. This subtle transition maintains the cozy ambiance while subtly preparing your home for the joyous festivities ahead.

When the time comes to fully embrace the spirit of Christmas, select a color scheme that reflects your personal style and the ambiance you wish to create. Whether you opt for the classic red and green or prefer a more modern palette of metallics and pastels, your choices will set the tone for a magical holiday experience.

16 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

Of course, the Christmas tree takes center stage when it comes to holiday decorating. Choose one that suits your space, whether it’s a majestic fir that graces your living room or a faux tabletop tree that adds charm to a cozy corner. Begin the treetrimming tradition by stringing twinkling lights that cast a warm and inviting glow, then layer on ornaments that mirror your chosen palette and personal interests. Whether cherished heirlooms passed down through generations or handcrafted creations, each ornament contributes to the story of your holiday celebrations.

Extend the enchantment of Christmas throughout your home by incorporating garlands along staircases, mantels, and entryways. Weave in twinkling lights, ribbons, and small ornaments for an extra touch of magic. And let’s not forget the beloved tradition of stockings hung with care –these timeless decorations hold a special place in our hearts and fill any space with a sense of anticipation and tradition.

There’s a unique joy in infusing your space with handmade and personal touches. The holiday season is a perfect time to embark on DIY projects that reflect your creativity and add a unique touch to your decor. From handcrafted ornaments to photo-adorned DIY wreaths, these creations deepen the sentimental value of your seasonal decorations.

Embracing the warmth of fall hues and seamlessly transitioning to the enchantment of Christmas magic is a delightful endeavor that allows you to fill your living space with a sense of wonder, tradition, and personal expression. Through the careful curation of colors, textures, and cherished decorations, your home becomes a canvas that tells the story of each passing season and the memories it holds. 

CR A ZY FOR DENIM

THE TIMELESS FABRIC THAT DEFINES STYLE AND COMFORT

The adage “History repeats itself” holds true not just in history, but also in the world of fashion. Trends that were once outdated and scoffed at are now everywhere you turn. But let’s be honest – denim is a wardrobe staple for any season, offering a versatile canvas for a number of styles. From denim jackets to dresses and accessories, the options are endless. This season, there are definitely a few musthave pieces for your wardrobe.

While skinny jeans have dominated the denim scene the past few years, this season expect to see a revival of styles you may not have observed for a while –bootcut, boyfriend fit, low rise, mom

cut, jumpsuits … the list goes on, including the trending style that Vogue has dubbed the “baggy blue jean.” Wide-leg and cargo jean styles are making a fashion comeback as well, as witnessed during this summer’s New York Fashion Week. Dress these up with a tucked-in button-up, or go casual with a cropped t-shirt –no matter your style, you can’t go wrong. This new, much more comfortable, denim option is the polar opposite of the “suck it in” skinny jean era of recent times. However, if skinny jeans are your jam, don’t feel like you need to get rid of them just yet. Pair those skinnies with your favorite boots for a classic look that I secretly hope never goes out of style.

Another perennial wardrobe staple is the classic denim jacket. Oversized or cropped, distressed or not, it’s the perfect layering piece for cooler months. When you are out this season enjoying bonfires, pumpkin picking, football tailgates, town tree lightings, or taking pictures with Santa, the denim jacket is surely something you will want to readily have on hand. Not only will it allow you to accessorize your favorite fall outfit, it will also keep you warm and comfy at the same time. Personally, one of my favorite looks for the season is a denim jacket tied around my waist over a pair of leggings and paired with a comfy sweater and boots. You can’t go wrong with this cozy, on-trend look that I think I can safely say is here to stay.

New to the denim world this season are denim accessories – think handbags, headbands, and even shoes. Fans are finding a multitude of ways to add a touch of their favorite material to help anchor their outfits. These accessories can also provide the perfect pop of color to any outfit that is mostly neutral in tone. This simple addition is sure to elevate any ensemble you have planned for this fall.

The best thing about these denim trends is that they complement items you already have in your closet. Effortlessly transition that lovely summer sundress into a new fall favorite by layering it with a distressed denim jacket. Pair flare jeans with a cozy sweater. Add a denim handbag as the perfect accessory to those upcoming holiday soirees. These combinations prove that denim is a versatile companion to any item in your wardrobe.

Denim’s fashion reign is set to continue this season, and on into next year with dresses, skirts, and even vests jumping on the bandwagon. But whether or not you’d like to join in on those trends, my denim fashion tip for you this season, and all year long, is that no matter your style, keep it comfortable, and keep everything –because sooner or later, every denim piece you own is sure to come back in style. 

Are you considering altering your eyes to help create the ultimate creepy Halloween costume? Or are you a cosplay fan looking to fully embrace a character with crazy, vividly colored eyes? If so, costume contact lenses may be on your radar. But before you decide to transform your look with these decorative lenses, read on to ensure you do so safely.

Costume contact lenses are soft lenses designed to change your eye’s appearance. Ideal for occasions like Halloween or costume play, they can alter its color, pupil shape, and even impart cartoon or film character effects. These lenses cater to both individuals who wear glasses or contact lenses regularly, and those who don’t, as they are available with and without vision correction.

It’s crucial to note that all contact lenses, including non-prescription colored or special effects lenses, are classified as medical devices by the FDA. As such, they require a valid prescription from a licensed eye care practitioner. Since 2005, selling contact lenses without a valid prescription has been illegal in the United States.

ARE COSTUME LENSES SAFE?

Costume lenses are safe to wear, but only when they are properly prescribed, cared for, and purchased from a legitimate source. Wearing them without a prescription may seem harmless, but beware … they can severely damage your eyes, potentially leading to permanent blindness. Unfortunately, many costume contact lenses are sold without a doctor’s prescription. When used incorrectly, all types of contact lenses can increase the risk of eye infections.

Contact lenses, including costume ones, are not “one size fits all.” If not properly sized, they can cause corneal abrasions, leading to pain, redness, and light sensitivity. An abrasion may result in a corneal ulcer, which, if not treated properly, can scar over, permanently affecting your vision. In severe cases, the cornea may become so damaged that a corneal transplant is needed in order to restore vision.

Additionally, some costume lenses may impede oxygen flow to the eye, as the paints and pigments used to add color result in thicker,

less breathable material. Furthermore, a study discovered that chemicals used to color over-the-counter tinted contact lenses include chlorine and other harmful substances. These chemicals, known to be toxic to human tissue, can seep into your eye, possibly leading to vision loss. Lenses that are FDA-approved only use non-toxic tints for lens coloring. It should also be noted that research published in the professional journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science revealed that those who wear cosmetic contact lenses faced a more than 16 times greater risk of developing an eye infection than their counterparts who wear standard prescribed corrective lenses.

Safely wear costume contact lenses with these tips:

– Get an eye exam from a licensed eye care professional such as an ophthalmologist who will measure each eye and talk to you about proper contact lens care.

– Obtain a valid prescription that includes the brand name, lens measurements, and expiration date.

– Purchase colored contact lenses from a retailer that requires a prescription.

– Adhere to contact lens care instructions for proper cleaning, disinfecting, and usage.

– Never share lenses with others.

– Get follow-up exams as directed by your eye care provider.

If you experience redness, swelling, excessive discharge, pain, or discomfort while wearing contact lenses, remove them immediately and seek prompt medical attention from an eye care provider. Eye infections can become serious very quickly and sometimes the damage is not reversible.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Costume contact lenses come in a wide variety of dramatic designs and colors. They are opaque to completely mask your natural eye color, with a clear center over the pupil to allow you to see. Some only cover the iris (the colored part of the eye), while others can extend to the sclera (the white part) to change not only its color but also the eye’s appearance. Depending on the lens maker, these can be tinted or hand-painted, often requiring a customized order.

Black sclera contact lenses, white lenses, wild eyes, cat eyes. Whichever you choose, there’s a huge array of costume lenses to add the

ultimate finishing touch to your Halloween ensemble … including circle lenses, also called “big eye” lenses, a relatively recent phenomenon. Inspired by doe-eyed anime characters, they make your eyes appear larger than normal, producing a doll-like look.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Current trends in costume or novelty contact lenses are inspired by movies and TV shows. For instance, have you ever seen The Witcher? Most of the TV show’s characters who flaunt different colored eyes, such as the Witcher himself, are wearing costume lenses. A number of vampire TV shows and movies also use costume lenses to create a more frightening appearance for their protagonists. Even Professor Hooch from Harry Potter wore costume lenses so her eyes would look more like those of a hawk.

Costume contact lenses aren’t a recent fad, however. Optometrist Morton Greenspoon was a pioneer of theatrical lenses, providing special effects contact lenses to the film industry starting back in the 1950s. Known as an “optometrist to the stars,” Dr. Greenspoon “edited” Elvis Presley’s baby blues to brown for the movie Flaming Star, simply with the use of theatrical lenses. And who can forget Michael Jackson’s wolf eyes in the classic Thriller music video? We have Dr. Greenspoon to thank for that famous image. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his contributions to Bram Stoker’s Dracula; received a movie credit for his work on The Lost Boys; and worked on a multitude of movies and television shows throughout his career, including The Ten Commandments, which featured the first mirrored contact lenses in 1967.

But you don’t have to walk the red carpet to create such imagery. With the array of costume lenses available today, you too can get into character. Their cost varies significantly, depending on how they are made, and what designs are featured on them. For instance, a hand-painted lens is going to cost substantially more than a conventional-colored one.

PROTECT YOURSELF

As I discussed previously, decorative contact lenses sold without a prescription can cause serious eye infections, impaired vision, and even blindness. If you’re considering wearing these types of lenses, it’s imperative that you protect yourself from illegal ones. In October 2016, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency announced that ICE, the FDA, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) combined efforts to conduct several hundred seizures throughout America, totaling approximately 100,000 pairs of counterfeit, illegal, and unapproved contact lenses. The enforcement actions were conducted under the FDAled initiative dubbed Operation Double Vision, an ongoing effort to protect the health and safety of the American public from illegal contact lenses. Testing of confiscated illegal lenses revealed many had high levels of bacteria that could cause significant eye infections. Also, the coloring of some decorative contact lenses was made

of lead-based materials that could leach directly into the eye. The agency urges consumers that anyone interested in wearing any type of contact lenses should visit an eye doctor, obtain a prescription, and purchase them from a licensed provider.

Costume contact lenses can offer an enchanting, eerie, or sassy twist to your Halloween festivities, allowing you to step into the shoes – or rather, eyes – of your favorite characters. Whether you’re aiming to transform into a mystical creature, a bewitching vampire, or a captivating anime character, they can provide the perfect finishing touch to your fun, festive, or frightening ensemble. With the right precautions in place, you can create a mesmerizing and memorable look while keeping your eyes safe and healthy.

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOO K A LOT LIKE

COCKTAILS!

Can you feel it? That morning crispness in the air that whispers ’tis the season for holiday cheer. This time of year brings fun, colorful stories, décor, and cocktails! The fall and pumpkins seem to go hand-in-hand, but why be boring and have the typical pumpkin spice ______ (fill in the blank) when you can have some high class and a history lesson combined into one?

Did you know that the imagery we associate with witches today stems from the original “brewsters” of beer? Ale wives, or brewsters, were the women who brewed beer in the 1600s. As you can imagine, a cauldron was used for brewing large batches of beer. The cats, often black, were kept to scare the vermin away from the grains used for brewing. The tall black pointed hats were worn by the brewsters in the marketplace to help customers find them, since they were typically of smaller stature than their male counterparts in the market. Once the beer was finished brewing and ready to drink, the brewster would hang a broom above her door to let everyone know the beer was ready. I don’t know about you, but I intend to trick-or-treat at the home of the witch this holiday season! In honor of our witchy brethren, the Halloween drink we are brewing is the Black Velvet. The name itself speaks of richness in color and texture. To make this a top shelf cocktail, start by using one of our area brewing companies’ choice of seasonal stout and top off with an equal part of champagne or your favorite sparkling wine. Witchly delicious, it will have you cackling through the night!

As the air begins to chill and we all gather together to give thanks, time with friends and family warms the heart – so why not warm your taste buds as well? For something warm, spicy, and comforting, yet still boozy, try a “Dirty” Hot Buttered Rum. This classic cocktail with a modern twist will have you giving thanks.

As we all know, the moment Thanksgiving ends, the holiday craziness begins. While not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse, you should be stirring up a Christmas cocktail! The Christmas Cricket is crafted with blanco tequila, vanilla liqueur, minty amaro, coconut pandan, cream, mole bitters, and dark chocolate. Leave this out for Santa to sip with his cookies and it will be his best Christmas yet.

BLACK VELVET

– Equal parts stout or dark beer and champagne or sparkling wine

“DIRTY” HOT BUTTERED RUM

– 1 teaspoon brown sugar

– 4 ounces hot milk

– 1½ ounces spiced rum (try Hazel 63 to support a North Carolina distillery)

– ½ ounce coffee liquor (Mr. Black is the absolute best in my opinion)

– 1 tablespoon butter

– Ground nutmeg

Prep your mug by pouring piping hot water into it and covering with a small plate. Once warmed, pour out the water, add brown sugar and hot milk (or fresh, hot water for a lighter texture). Stir until the sugar dissolves and then add rum. Gently float the butter atop the drink, sprinkle some freshly ground nutmeg, and enjoy.

CHRISTMAS CRICKET

*Made famous by the Miracle Christmas Cocktail Pop-up Bar

– 1½ ounce blanco tequila

– ½ ounce vanilla liquor (I recommend Licor 43)

– ¼ ounce mint amaro

– ¾ ounce coconut pandan syrup

– ¾ ounce cream

– 2 dashes mole bitters

– Dark chocolate shavings

Mix all ingredients in a shaker tin with ice and strain into a Nick and Nora glass. Garnish with grated dark chocolate.

BUT TERNU T SQUASH S O UP

SAVORY COMFORT IN A BOWL

The holidays … a time when families come together, traveling from all over to enjoy a special meal and cherish quality moments. Have you ever experienced the perfect Thanksgiving meal? An event so spectacular that you look back and say, “Wow, everything went exactly as planned – the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the love … all of it was just perfect.” Truly a time that was so memorable and beloved. Well ... that is not what happened on Thanksgiving of 2011.

Allow me to introduce my cousin, the renowned Buffalo, New York chef Teddy Bryant. Chef Teddy’s culinary journey began at Nassau Boces, a vocational school on Long Island, where he studied culinary arts and cultivated a passion for the world of cuisine. During his time at Boces, he embarked on an apprenticeship at the well-known and highly regarded New York

City restaurant, Le Cirque. Upon graduation, he further honed his skills as a student at the esteemed CIA – no, not the Central Intelligence Agency, but rather The Culinary Institute of America, from which he graduated in 2005.

After CIA, Teddy moved to Las Vegas and worked in hotels such as Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, the Venetian, and Palazzo. Throughout his Vegas tenure, he worked alongside notable chefs, including Bradley Ogden, Wolfgang Puck, and Mario Batali. From Vegas, he decided to move to Dallas, Texas and help a friend open a fine dining restaurant. Once they were on their feet, he felt compelled to move back to his hometown of Buffalo, marking the beginning of a pivotal chapter in his career. Collaborating with the owners of the now-famous Lloyd Taco Trucks, Chef Teddy was the heart, soul, and fuel that helped Lloyd grow from a single food truck to four, and two brick and mortar restaurants. Teddy’s culinary prowess extended to winning numerous “Top Chef” competitions in Buffalo. So it’s safe to say that you are in good hands with this recipe I’m about to share.

In a surprising twist to all (and a disappointing announcement to fans of quality food in that region), Chef Teddy has hung up his hat to discover a new passion beyond the kitchen. He is now using his magical hands to renovate and remodel homes in the Buffalo area. This allows him to spend more time with his family and friends, which is what it is all about anyway, right?

Back to the fateful Thanksgiving of 2011 …

When he moved back home, Teddy wanted to create the perfect Thanksgiving feast for us, his family. After working tirelessly throughout the holiday season, and finally having one day off, he decided to craft and execute an unforgettable Thanksgiving menu. There was only one problem – well, two, but I will get to that.

The oven broke down. I repeat ... the oven broke down! All this glorious food, prepared by a chef who had trained with world famous chefs, was just sitting there, waiting to be cooked. Utter chaos. The turkey was in the middle of cooking at this point, so Teddy, along with my mother and father, had to get creative in finishing the meal. That is where the sous chefs stepped up and delivered. Chef Mike (microwave), Chef Crock (slow cooker) and Chef Top (stove-top) banded together and saved the day hours later, delivering one of the most exquisite feasts I have ever had. I was blown away with the flavors Teddy brought to the meal. Everything was just incredible.

Among the meal’s highlights was the butternut squash soup we had as an appetizer. Until that point, I don’t believe I had ever experienced this culinary creation – it’s not something I would have ever have ordered, quite honestly. But I am telling you … since Chef Teddy made it, I knew I was going to love it.

30 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

He even made a fresh, homemade cranberry sauce, much to the disappointment of my father, as he pined for the canned version of the traditional side. This was problem number two, as previously stated. Easy fix though, as we rushed to the store and got Dad his canned cranberry.

Ultimately, that particular Thanksgiving may not have been perfect, but the experience, and the delectable food, made it one of the most memorable for me. At the end of the day, it does not really matter how you get to the result. If you are surrounded by people you love, I always consider that a win.

This holiday season, I hope you enjoy Chef Teddy’s cherished butternut squash soup recipe, one that captures a snippet of this unforgettable culinary experience.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

Serves 8-10

– 2 tablespoons of olive oil

– 3-4 cloves of garlic, chopped

– 1 large yellow onion, chopped

– ½ teaspoon salt

– 1 (3 pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed

– 1 tablespoon chopped sage

– 3-4 cups of hot chicken broth (substitute vegetable if preferred)

– 1 cup heavy whipping cream

– Cracked black pepper as desired

In a heavy bottom sauce pot, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onions, garlic, and salt and stir frequently until translucent, about 3-5 minutes. Add squash and cook until slightly golden on edges, stirring frequently, about 3-5 minutes.

Add 3 cups of broth and sage. Turn to high until soup begins to boil, then cover and turn to a simmer. Cook about 20- 30 minutes until squash is tender and falling apart. This time can vary depending the size of squash cubes.

Very carefully blend the soup using a

hand stick blender. Blend until all chunks of squash, onions, and garlic are smooth. For a thinner consistency, add more of the hot broth you have reserved, Then slowly pour in the cream while blending to fully combine and add richness to the soup. The cream can be left out if vegan. (If using a “smoothie blender,” only fill the blender half way or slightly less than half because it will be too hot to blend in a large batch. For safety, you may need to blend in multiple batches.)

Once the soup is fully blended, add some

freshly cracked pepper. Taste your soup and decide if you want more salt or not. This can vary depending on your preference or the amount of liquid you added. Serve and enjoy!

* Garnish ideas: toasted, chopped hazelnuts; fried sage; or a dollop of fresh Mexican crema or sour cream 

A FRESH START TO FALL

The spring season gets all of the attention when it comes to cleaning our homes. However, you should be cleaning more than once a year. Fall is a perfect time to do some home cleaning and maintenance tasks. The temperatures are starting to cool off, making it the perfect time to do home projects. Make sure these five home areas are on your autumn cleaning checklist.

1. CLEAN YOUR KITCHEN APPLIANCES: As you prepare for hearty fall meals, give your kitchen appliances a little TLC. You should clean your oven at least every three months. However, most people need to do it more often than this. If you see food spills or smell burning while cooking, you should clean it. The majority of modern ovens are self-cleaning, so this task should be as simple as a few pushes of the buttons. Or, if you prefer to do it yourself, rather than dealing with unpleasant fumes from chemical sprays, make your own mixture of baking soda and water. Spread the paste over the gunk on the inside of your oven. Let it sit overnight, and wipe it off the following day. Then use white vinegar to wipe down the inside of your oven. Additionally, deep clean the interior and exterior of your stovetop, microwave, and refrigerator. Wipe down surfaces and handles to remove grease and spills.

2. REPLACE AIR CONDITIONING FILTERS: HVAC filters should get replaced every three months. Throughout the spring and summer, your filters worked hard to trap dust and pollen. While changing the filters, grab your vacuum and clean the built-up dust and lint that gets caught in your vents and ducts. This improves the air quality of your home during the winter months when it is too cold to open windows and air out your home. While you’re at it, consider scheduling a professional HVAC inspection to ensure your system is running smoothly. And don’t forget about cleaning the air ducts, which can accumulate dust and allergens over time.

3. DEEP CLEAN YOUR CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY: The cooler fall temperatures and lower humidity make this the perfect time for deep cleaning your carpets, paying particular attention to high-traffic areas and corners. Open the windows to air out the house and help the carpets dry. If you don’t need heavy cleaning,

spread baking soda to absorb funky odors and then vacuum it up. You need a carpet cleaner to wash the carpets if you have stains. Allow the carpets to dry well to ensure they don’t get musty or harbor mildew. For upholstery, gently vacuum and spot-clean any stains. This will not only enhance the appearance of your home, but also improve indoor air quality as you spend more time inside.

4. WASH AND STORE SUMMER BEDDING: If you own summer and winter bedding, fall is the time to switch them out. Launder your summer bedding so it is clean and ready for winter storage. Bring out your fall and winter bedding and get it ready for use. Before you dress the bed, you should clean your mattress. You should clean your mattress every six months. Sprinkle baking soda and let it sit for at least eight hours. After this, you can vacuum it, and your bed is ready for the cooler months.

5. WASH WINDOWS AND WINDOW TREATMENTS: The changing leaves outside deserve a clear and unobstructed view from your windows. Bid farewell to the grime and dust that may have accumulated on them during the summer months. Start by giving your windows a thorough cleaning, both inside and out. Don’t forget to clean the window sills and tracks as well, as these areas can trap dirt. Additionally, take this opportunity to launder or dry clean your window treatments, such as curtains and blinds, to ensure they’re fresh and free from allergens. Clean windows allow more natural light to filter in, brightening your space during fall’s shorter days.

As you tackle these five essential areas, you’ll be setting the stage for a cozy and inviting autumn season indoors. Fall cleaning not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home, but also contributes to a healthier and more comfortable living environment. With a refreshed living space, you’ll be ready to embrace the joys of fall –from festive feasts with family to simple, quiet moments spent with loved ones. So roll up your sleeves, gather your cleaning supplies, and embark on a revitalizing journey to prepare your home for the beauty and serenity of autumn. 

BEYOND THE ENVELOPE

CREATIVE WAYS TO GIFT MONEY AND GIFT CARDS THIS CHRISTMAS

Giving money or gift cards for Christmas can sometimes feel impersonal, but a little creativity can transform a seemingly impersonal gift into a thoughtful gesture. Plus, choosing to give gift cards to local businesses is a wonderful way to support your community while providing meaningful presents.

By selecting gift cards from local shops, restaurants, or services, you not only offer recipients the joy of choosing their favorite items or experiences, but you also contribute to the sustainability and growth of our local economy.

While the value of the gift remains the same, the manner in which it is presented can speak volumes. By taking the time to devise imaginative and customized ways to deliver these gifts, you will not only surprise and delight the recipient, but also convey the message that you’ve thought about their preferences and interests. If you’re looking to gift money or gift cards creatively and with a whole new level of personal connection and warmth this holiday season, here are a few easy and imaginative ideas.

– Money Tree: Money really does “grow” on this tree! With glue dots (or something similar that will ensure they won’t rip), attach bills to the branches of a small potted tree, a tree-shaped wire frame, or cone-shaped styrofoam. This not only makes for a visually appealing gift but also adds an element of surprise as the recipient “harvests” their money.

– Gift Card Snow Globe: Place a gift card inside a homemade snow globe. Fill a glass jar with water, add glitter, and secure the gift card to the lid’s underside. When the recipient shakes the snow globe, they’ll discover their gift card floating in a winter wonderland.

– Christmas Bauble Surprise: Place the money inside a clear, two-piece plastic Christmas ornament that opens in half. You can add a bit of decorative filler like tinsel or mini ornaments and tie a sparkly ribbon at the top for a festive touch.

– Balloon Payment: Roll up bills and hide them in balloons. Add festive confetti for extra whimsy.

– Gift Card Wreath: Create a wreath using gift card as ornaments. Attach colorful ribbons to the cards and arrange them in a circular pattern, securing them to a lovely wreath.

– Gift Card Scavenger Hunt: Turn the gift card into the final clue of a short scavenger hunt. Provide a series of clues or

38 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

riddles that lead the recipient to different locations or objects around the house until they ultimately find their gift.

– Holiday Socks: Slip the gift card or money into a pair of cozy holiday-themed socks. It's a practical and warm way to present your gift.

– Holiday Photo Album: Make a custom photo album filled with cherished memories, and tuck the gift card or cash in one of the photo pockets.

– Gift Card Bookmarks: Turn the gift card into a bookmark. Attach a tassel or ribbon for an elegant touch. Pair it with a book you think the recipient will enjoy.

– Holdiay-Themed Mason Jar: Fill a mason jar with holiday-themed items like mini ornaments, wrapped candies, colorful shredded filler, etc. Nestle the gift card or cash among the goodies for a delightful surprise.

– Custom Christmas Stocking: Sew or purchase a small personalized Christmas stocking and tuck the money or gift card inside. Hang it on the Christmas tree or

by the fireplace for a festive presentation.

– Santa’s Sack of Surprises: Place the gift card or cash inside a tiny Santa’s sack or a festive drawstring bag for a touch of holiday fun.

– Mini Money Book: Create a mini “book” by folding bills accordion-style and placing them between two covers made of cardboard or decorative paper.

– Coffee Fix: Spoil a true coffee connoisseur twice. Fill a holiday mug with whole roasted coffee beans, then tuck a gift card to the recipient’s favorite local coffee shop inside.

These creative ways to present money or gift cards at Christmas not only make the experience more exciting and memorable, but also show that you’ve put thought and effort into your gift-giving. Whether you choose a playful scavenger hunt, an elegant money tree, or gift card bookmark, your recipient is sure to appreciate the extra effort you’ve put into making their gift extra special. 

TIS THE SEASON TO SELL

NAVIGATING A HOME SALE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Before you say “EEEK!” to selling your house during the holidays, consider the potential benefits that come with it. While photographing the exterior might be a tad trickier due to your Bermuda grass turning brown and colder weather conditions, a successful sale is still very achievable with the right approach. Read on for some valuable tips to make your holiday home sale not only fun, but also lucrative.

1. Be Mindful Of Timing: List your home before the holiday rush begins if possible. Buyers who are actively looking during this period are likely motivated and serious. However, we all have busy lives, buyers included. They will have parties, shopping, sheer exhaustion, etc. Once December hits, there is an opportunity for a couple of weeks of intense marketing of your home, but then the holiday ham or turkey is being served. And then there’s the napping … lots of napping. So take advantage of the pre-holiday hangover and list as early as possible.

2. Decorate Thoughtfully: While it’s common to decorate your home for the holidays, try to aim for neutral and tasteful choices. Avoid going overboard with excessive decorations (like that Grim Reaper candy bowl or talking Santa) that might distract potential buyers from appreciating your home’s true potential.

3. Maintain Curb Appeal: Even during the cooler months of the year, curb appeal matters. Remove fallen leaves from walkways, keep the yard tidy, and use outdoor lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Decorate your porch with simple yet inviting details.

4. Minimize Clutter: Decluttering – literally one of my favorite words – is essential for any home sale. Yes, go ahead and display the family ornaments or Menorah. But that reindeer that lost its head? Let’s face it … you really are not going to get around to fixing it, so toss it. During the holiday selling season, decluttering is even more important, as you want to create a spacious and inviting atmosphere. Simple, chic, and elegant. Repeat after me …

5. Professional Photos: Enlist a professional photographer to capture your home in the best possible light. The photos should highlight your home’s features without showcasing any holiday decorations. Here’s a little secret … did you know we can digitally remove anything from your home in photos? Yes, like my Jersey origins would tell ya, I got a guy for that!

6. Highlight Coziness: Emphasize the cozy and warm aspects of your home. If you have a fireplace, showcase it. But while I understand how fun it is to decorate that mantel, please leave Jack Skelington and your gnomes in their boxes. After all, you are moving soon – you need to pack anyway and this alleviates the additional step of repacking those items. Ensure the heating system is working well to create a comfortable environment.

7. Showcase Storage Solutions: With winter gear and holiday decorations, storage becomes important. Highlight any storage solutions your home offers.

8. Price Competitively: Research the local real estate market and set a competitive price for your home. Serious buyers are active

'

during the holiday season. No one else in their right mind (besides that nosy neighbor up the block) is wasting their time houselooking during the holiday season. Trust me. But as always, a well-priced home will sell almost overnight.

9. Flexible Showings: Be accommodating with showing times – a more flexible schedule will get more people into your home and possibly get you more offers as well. Buyers might have tighter schedules due to holiday commitments, so allowing flexible viewing hours can increase your chances of attracting serious buyers. You may not, however, get as many morning showings on the weekend, what with all those holiday parties – this may work in your favor.

10. Online Presentation: Make sure your real estate professional presents your listing well online. High-quality photos and a detailed description are essential, as many buyers start their searches online.

11. Host Open Houses: Host open houses on weekends or during evenings when potential buyers have more time to attend. Or consider extending it to a weekend of open houses … this will allow you to showcase your home throughout one full weekend for maximum exposure. Then once that offer comes in, you can enjoy the rest of your weekends during the holiday season.

12. Work With An Experienced Realtor: An experienced real estate agent can provide valuable insights and guidance to help you navigate the unique challenges of the season. Choose someone skilled and ready to market your home in the best light possible and with maximum exposure.

13. Offer Incentives: Depending on current market trends, consider enticing buyers with incentives like covering closing costs or providing a home warranty. Consult with your realtor to determine if these are necessary. In today’s competitive market, incentives are helping tremendously.

Selling your home during the holidays demands a bit of extra effort, but it can attract motivated buyers. By following these tips and maintaining a positive attitude, you can increase your chances of a successful holiday sale. Don’t underestimate the value of working with an experienced realtor to help you navigate your journey to the closing table. 

Fashion is all about feeling good in what we wear and showcasing our personal style. It’s a powerful outlet that allows us to feel confident and express our individuality, regardless of our age, size, color, or shape. Historically, however, there has been a lack of diversity in the fashion industry. Today, we are fortunately witnessing a paradigm shift towards fashion inclusivity, celebrating diversity in body types, ethnicities, genders, ages, and abilities. This increased representation allows individuals from various backgrounds to see themselves reflected in the fashion world, leading to greater self-acceptance and elevated self-esteem. Inclusive fashion allows individuals to express themselves authentically, encouraging a sense of empowerment over how they present themselves.

Understanding and embracing your body shape leads to more comfortable and enjoyable styling, helping you to find clothes that enhance your natural features. Measure your bust, waist, and hips to determine if you are an hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, or inverted triangle shape. Keeping in mind your body shape when making choices can allow you to accentuate your assets and create balance.

If you are an apple shape, a V-shaped neckline paired with flared pants can highlight your torso and legs. Keeping details on the lower third of your body and choosing flared pants over skinny or straight will help to balance your wider shoulders.

Shirts and dresses with ruffles, pleats, or ties at the top that help draw focus from their lower half are good options for those with more of a pear shape. Boatnecks, sweetheart necklines, and scoop necks emphasize the shoulders. Straight or slightly flared pants in a dark color can help balance a more bottom-heavy shape, and a well-fitting bra can enhance the bust, adding further equilibrium.

Rectangular figures benefit from adding femininity and shape –for instance, try to avoid straight or baggy items that will result in a more shapeless look, and pinch in your waist and exaggerate your curves with a belt over your dresses or skirts.

For those of you with an hourglass silhouette, (which is actually only 8% of women), consider wearing body-hugging styles to accentuate your shape. Sweetheart necklines or V-necks can bring

CELEBRATING FASHIO N FOR EVERY BODY

attention to your curvy top, while belted styles draw focus to your waist. Baggy or straight clothes will hide your shapely figure, so avoid that fashion style if you want to emphasize your curves.

No matter what your shape or size, well-fitting clothes make a huge difference. If off-the-rack sizing does not fit your body properly, don’t hesitate to invest in tailoring to ensure your clothes fit well and are hemmed to the right length.

Color can play a significant role in enhancing your appearance as well. Pay attention to hues that complement your skin tones. Dark colors can create a slimming, minimizing effect, while bright colors can draw attention to specific areas. Pay attention to shades in which you feel confident, as they probably are your most flattering.

And don’t forget about accessories! A statement necklace, scarf, or handbag can add a touch of elegance or pizzazz to any outfit.

Fashion doesn’t have an age limit. Dressing age-appropriately is about feeling comfortable and stylish. Don’t be afraid to challenge age-related fashion expectations. If you’re 65 and want to rock a mini skirt, then go for it! On the other hand, if you are self-conscious about your arms and want to wear sleeves to camouflage them, then that’s okay too. Adapt trends to your personal taste and with what makes you feel comfortable.

Finding pieces that fit often results from trial and error. Many people think they can’t wear certain styles because of their body type or age, and therefore never even try them on. Be open to trying on something new – you just might surprise yourself! Embrace trends that resonate with you while modifying them to your body’s strengths and coordinating them with a capsule of timeless pieces. Your confidence will radiate when you are comfortable in what you are wearing and will help you to feel more self-assured. Confidence is key to expressing your personal style. 

In addition to featuring an array of display lights spanning over 30 acres, an enclosed carousel, and a train ride through more than 10 acres, Meadow Lights is also home to “The Old Country Store,” one of the largest candy stores in North Carolina, boasting over 300 varieties of Christmas and old-fashioned candy.

FALL INTO A WELLNESS ROUTINE

Mmmm … you can almost taste the hot apple cider and pumpkin spice. Soon the scent of cookies will fill the air –and our stomachs. Instead of counting calories this season, try counting opportunities for wellness. Beautiful fall weather brings a chance to hit the trails, tackle yard projects, and socialize with friends at a bonfire. Wellness is not exclusively found in the gym and is more than just physical activity. It plays a role in our overall well-being, including the emotional, occupational, intellectual, environmental, financial, physical, social, and spiritual aspects.

So, how do we ensure we are well rounded in our wellness routine instead of our waistline? Be intentional and proactive. Taking care of ourselves is an ongoing process that requires frequent check-ins to make sure we aren’t off balance. Try not to spend too much energy on one area of wellness that you neglect all the others. This fall, find a rhythm that works for you – one that builds resilience. Give yourself credit for the wellness activities you are already doing well and find ways to improve the others.

Consider the following when evaluating your wellness balance.

– EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL: If you discover that you are experiencing increased levels of stress as your social calendar gets overloaded, minimizing the time you have to complete the activities you wish you had time for, then your wellness scale is off balance.

– OCCUPATIONAL: What we occupy our time with – our habits, our roles, and the contributions we make to our families and society – provides a sense of purpose and gives meaning to every day. It’s not just a profession, it’s what we do with our lives.

– INTELLECTUAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL: How we use our minds and the environment we surround ourselves with can be invigorating or deteriorating. Challenge yourself to learn new things. Put healthy boundaries in place to create an environment you don’t just survive in, but thrive in.

– FINANCIAL AND SPIRITUAL: Finding peace spiritually and financially can make the outlook on our week feel much different than if these areas of wellness were off balance. Being generous, with our finances or our spirit, pays back in dividends.

– PHYSICAL: When you can’t find 10 minutes to take a walk and get some fresh air because that deadline is creeping up on you, it’s time to tip the balance back.

Seemingly small activities like taking a walk with a friend who needs support or having your morning cup of coffee are all a part of your wellness routine. Don’t wait for the countdown at midnight on the 31st of December. Fall into your rhythm of resilience and wellness today. 

LOCATION MATTERS

FINDING THE PERFECT NEIGHBORHOOD FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

When embarking on the journey of purchasing a new home, the old adage “location, location, location” holds true for good reason. The significance of the neighborhood in which you choose to live cannot be overstated. From proximity to work and schools and access to amenities to future growth potential, the location of your future home plays a pivotal role in shaping your daily life and long-term investment.

PROXIMITY TO WORK – BALANCING COMMUTE AND QUALITY OF LIFE:

For many, the daily commute to work can significantly impact their overall well-being and quality of life. A long and grueling commute not only eats into precious time, but it can also breed stress and fatigue. When considering a location, take into account commuting times during peak hours. Striking a balance between closeness to work and a comfortable commute can enhance your overall living experience.

ACCESS TO AMENITIES – CONVENIENCE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS:

The availability of amenities within close proximity can greatly improve your daily life. Consider the convenience of grocery stores, restaurants, parks, and recreational facilities. A neighborhood with a diverse range of amenities can save you time and effort, making it easier to engage in activities you enjoy without the hassle of long travel times. Walkable neighborhoods contribute to a sense of community and foster a more active lifestyle.

FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL – INVESTING IN TOMORROW:

While evaluating a neighborhood’s current offerings is important, considering its future growth potential can significantly impact your real estate investment. Research local development plans, infrastructure projects, and economic trends. Areas undergoing revitalization or expansion may offer promising investment opportunities. Balancing growth potential and the immediate livability

of the neighborhood will help ensure you’re making a well-rounded decision.

SELECTING THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD AT-A-GLANCE

1. Define your priorities. Begin by listing your must-haves and preferences. Understanding your priorities will guide your neighborhood search.

2. Visit at different times: To get a comprehensive feel, visit it at various times of the day and week. This will help you gauge noise levels, traffic patterns, and the general atmosphere.

52 CIRCA Magazine | October • November • December 2023 | circamagazine.com

3. Talk to locals: Engage with current residents to gather insights into the pros and cons of living in the area. Local residents can provide firsthand information that might not be readily available online.

4. Check local amenities: Consider the proximity to amenities that are essential to your lifestyle. Research the availability of grocery stores, healthcare facilities, parks, and recreational options.

5. Investigate zoning and future plans: Look into zoning regulations and future development plans for the neighborhood. This will give you an idea of what changes to expect in the coming years.

6. Work commute: Calculate your potential commute time to work during peak hours. A long commute can impact your quality of life, so consider how much time you’re willing to spend on the road.

7. Consider resale value: Even if you’re not planning to move anytime soon, think about resale value. A desirable neighborhood can make your property an attractive option for future buyers.

8. Trust your instincts: Ultimately, trust your instincts. If a neighborhood feels like a good fit for you, it likely is. Take your time to make an informed decision that aligns with your goals.

The importance of neighborhood location when buying a home cannot be overstated. It is a decision that goes beyond the physical structure of the house; it determines the lifestyle, convenience, and sense of belonging you’ll experience daily. From commute times and access to amenities to the potential for high resale value, the neighborhood sets the stage for your future. Taking the time to research and prioritize your preferences in terms of location ensures that you find not just a house, but a place you can truly call home, where you and your family can thrive and build lasting memories.

The holiday season is a time of joy and togetherness, often bringing families together from far distances. It’s also a valuable opportunity to assess the well-being of our elderly relatives. These festive visits can reveal subtle indications that your loved ones could benefit from extra assistance, or even a transition to a care community.

Following are a few key signs to watch for during holiday visits, along with guidance on seeking help if needed.

1. PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND PERSONAL HYGIENE: Take note of changes in appearance and grooming. Unwashed clothes, unkempt hair, or poor personal hygiene might suggest challenges in managing daily tasks independently.

2. COGNITIVE DECLINE AND FORGETFULNESS: Watch for memory lapses, confusion, and repetitive conversations. Are they struggling to recall recent events or familiar faces? Memory loss and cognitive decline are common in aging, but excessive forgetfulness or disorientation may require closer evaluation.

3. WEIGHT LOSS OR POOR NUTRITION: Monitor eating habits and weight changes. Sudden weight loss could indicate nutritional issues or underlying health concerns. Take a look at the contents of their refrigerator and pantry to ensure they have nutritious food.

4. HOME ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY: Evaluate their living conditions for signs of neglect or hazards. Are there piles of unopened mail, clutter, or signs of hoarding? Check for expired foods or medications. Unsafe or unsanitary living conditions could pose risks to their well-being.

5. CHANGES IN MOBILITY: Observe their movement around the house. Do they have difficulty walking or maintaining balance? Are there signs of falls, such as bruises or cuts? Mobility issues may increase the risk of accidents or injuries.

6. EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING: Engage in conversations to gauge their emotional state. Do they seem withdrawn, irritable, or unusually anxious? Depression and isolation can have a profound impact on their overall quality of life.

7. SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT: Consider their social interactions. Are they maintaining connections with friends, or have they become increasingly isolated? Reduced social engagement can contribute to feelings of loneliness and decline in mental well-being.

HOLIDAY CAREGIVING

RECOGNIZING WHEN YOUR LOVED ONE NEEDS MORE CARE

8. MEDICATION MANAGEMENT: Review their medication routine for accuracy. Are they taking them as prescribed? Look for expired medicines, missing doses, or confusion about them.

9. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Discuss their financial situation. Are there unpaid bills, unusual expenses, or signs of financial mismanagement? Cognitive decline can impact their ability to handle finances effectively.

10. RECOGNIZING SIGNS OF AGITATION OR AGGRESSION: Observe their behavior during interactions. Are they displaying signs of aggression, agitation, or uncharacteristic hostility? These behaviors could be indicative of underlying medical issues such as a urinary tract infection or emotional distress.

SEEKING HELP

Recognizing these signs is just the first step. If you notice any of these indicators, it’s important to take action promptly.

– Consult with professionals: Reach out to their primary care physician or a geriatric specialist to discuss your concerns. They can provide valuable insights and recommend appropriate assessments.

– Professional care manager: Consider consulting a certified geriatric care manager. These professionals specialize in assessing older adults’ needs and providing recommendations for care options, including assisted living or memory care communities.

– Local resources: Research local organizations, support groups, and senior centers that can provide guidance and resources for caregivers and seniors.

– In-home care services: Depending on the level of assistance needed, you might explore in-home care services that offer companionship, help with daily tasks, and medical monitoring.

– Transition to care community: If signs of decline are substantial, it might be time to explore assisted living or memory care communities. These environments

provide tailored care and support for older adults with varying levels of need.

Addressing these concerns requires open and compassionate communication with your loved one. It’s essential to involve them in the decision-making process and respect their preferences whenever possible.

Holiday gatherings present caregivers with a unique opportunity to assess their elderly loved ones’ well-being and identify signs that may indicate a need for additional care. These visits allow them to gauge physical health, cognitive functioning, emotional state, and other essential aspects. By recognizing these signs and seeking help, you are ensuring they receive the support and assistance they need. 

One of the greatest parts of the holiday season is the food. While humans can indulge in all sorts of treats this time of year, it’s important to understand that some of these foods are dangerous for dogs. Be sure to keep an eye on your pup as you’re bustling through the kitchen this holiday season. Take extra precautions to make sure the following foods are out of their reach.

CHOCOLATE: All chocolate, including dark or baking chocolate, can be dangerous for dogs. The theobromine in chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive

SAFE AND S OUND

thirst, urination, tremors, and seizures.

CANDY AND CANDY WRAPPERS: Candies often contain xylitol, a sugar alcohol that is extremely poisonous to dogs. Xylitol can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, leading to loss of coordination and collapse. It can also cause liver failure. Even if the candy itself doesn’t contain xylitol, the wrappers can be just as dangerous. If dogs ingest foil or cellophane wrappers, they can suffer from intestinal blockages.

ANIMAL BONES: While it may seem like a good idea to give your dog a bone to chew on, it can actually be hazardous. Animal

bones can splinter and cause lacerations or blockages in your dog’s digestive tract.

DAIRY: Many dogs are lactose intolerant and consuming dairy can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Keep the cheese plate away from your pup!

NUTS: Some nuts are safe for dogs in small quantities, and many enjoy nut butter treats. However, some are toxic to dogs or pose a choking risk and should be left off the menu. Avoid giving your dog macadamias, pistachios, black walnuts, and almonds.

The best way to keep dogs safe during the holidays is to make sure they don’t have access to any human food. Keep an eye on them while you’re cooking, and be sure to put leftovers away where they can’t reach them. And communicate with guests about the importance of not feeding Fido. But if you think your dog has ingested something they shouldn’t have, contact your veterinarian or local animal hospital immediately. The sooner you get them treatment, the better their chances for a full recovery.

The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, and this includes our beloved canine companions. By taking these precautions and being mindful of their wellbeing, we can celebrate the holidays with peace of mind, knowing that our dogs are safe and happy by our side. 

Each year, more than 10,000 babies are born prematurely in North Carolina. Fragile newborns need the best possible nutrition to grow and develop into healthy infants. Breast milk is the recommended source of nutrition for newborns, especially those who are born prematurely.

Many times, critically ill and premature babies are unable to breastfeed, and their mothers may have trouble establishing their own milk supplies. For a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), donor milk can be essential to life.

The WakeMed Mothers’ Milk Bank, located at WakeMed Cary Hospital, provides safe, pasteurized donor milk to help countless

infants during their most critical days in the NICU. WakeMed is home to the only non-profit milk bank in North Carolina, and one of less than 30 in the United States accredited by the Human Milk Bank Association of North America (HMBANA). The WakeMed Milk Bank follows guidelines set forth by HMBANA to ensure the highest level of purity and safety for fragile infants.

Non-profit milk banks rely on the generosity of parents who take the time and effort it requires to donate their milk, helping infants during their most vulnerable phase of life.

Without donors, milk banks would be unable to continuously supply milk to the fragile infants who need it. Donor milk is in high demand, and the milk bank needs donors and donations

more than ever to continue to meet the increased need for it – particularly as the holiday season approaches. The hustle and bustle often means a dip in donations and a gap in reserves. That’s why the milk bank is looking for new donors to help sustain the supply and provide this potentially lifesaving gift.

WakeMed’s Milk Bank needs a consistent, active donor base of about 400 women to continue to meet demand. In 2022 alone, it dispensed 278,627 ounces of donor milk to babies in hospital NICUs across North Carolina and all along the East Coast. Generous donors have given so many families a chance to feed their babies breast milk when it otherwise might not be an option.

Many times, women don’t realize they’d be great donors, or they think it will be complicated. Most breastfeeding women in good health can donate. The initial screening for potential milk donors is an online questionnaire followed by a simple 10-minute phone screening. “If there are no concerns during the phone screening, the next steps include some paperwork with more in-depth questions, physician approvals, and blood tests,” explains Kerrie Gottschall, manager of the WakeMed Mother’s Milk Bank.

Once a donor is approved, she makes an initial donation of 100 ounces of breast milk and then varying amounts for following donations. Donors can ship or drop off their frozen milk for donation.

To offer added convenience and hopefully increase milk bank donations, easy pull-up and drop-off sites for approved donors are provided at WakeMed locations in Apex, Cary, Clayton, North Raleigh, and Raleigh. “We know women are juggling a lot, so we want to make it super convenient to donate and help save other babies’ lives,” says Gottschall. 

V ENEER V ITALITY

As the holiday season unfurls its splendor, our calendars quickly fill with fun, frightening, and festive celebrations. From the spooky anticipation of Halloween to the gratitudefilled Thanksgiving gatherings to the spirit of Christmas, these occasions are often accompanied by the consumption of delicious treats, delectable feasts, and vibrant drinks.

If you have dental veneers – a popular, versatile cosmetic treatment that can transform your teeth’s appearance by altering their shape, size, color, or length – they can pose unique challenges to maintaining your stunning smile. Fear not, my veneer-wearing friends! With a bit of guidance, awareness, and preparation, you can enjoy all the magic the season has to offer while maintaining the strength, longevity, and brilliance of your veneers.

HALLOWEEN HAVOC: TRICKS FOR TREATING YOUR VENEERS

Halloween often means the indulgence of tasty treats. I know it’s tempting to chomp down on caramel apples, chewy candies, and popcorn balls, but remember that these sticky delights can potentially harm veneers.

– MAKE WISE CHOICES: Choose treats that are easy on your veneers, such as soft chocolates and melt-in-your-mouth goodies. Avoid hard candies that could lead to chipping or cracking.

– CUT, DON’T CHEW: If you can’t resist your favorite chewy treats, consider cutting them into small pieces instead of biting into them to reduce the risk of exerting excessive force on your veneers.

– STAY HYDRATED: Keep water on hand during your Halloween festivities. Sipping water can help rinse away sugars and acids that might linger on your veneers.

EMBRACE THE FEAST WITHOUT FEAR

Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude, served alongside an array of hearty, savory dishes and delectable desserts to tantalize the taste buds. However, if you’re a veneer wearer, it’s essential to approach this feast with a degree of mindfulness. To maintain their luster while enjoying the holiday’s culinary delights, consider the following:

– GENTLE BITES: Veneers are durable and designed for normal chewing, but it’s still a good idea to avoid biting into exceptionally

KEEP YOUR VENEERS MERRY AND BRIGHT THIS HOLIDAY
SEASON

hard foods, like turkey bones. Instead, opt for meat that’s been sliced into smaller, manageable bites.

– USE UTENSILS: Use utensils rather than your teeth as tools to help prevent undue stress on your veneers.

– SIP MINDFULLY: While enjoying beverages, avoid excessive staining agents like coffee or red wine. But if you do indulge, promptly rinse with water or brush your teeth afterward.

DECKING THE HALLS AND VENEERS: CHRISTMAS CARE

The magic of Christmas comes alive with twinkling trees, heartfelt gifts, jolly and joyful connections with loved ones … and a wealth of delicious edible delights. But don’t fret – it is possible to strike a balance between enjoying your favorite holiday indulgences and maintaining the integrity of your veneers.

– NAVIGATING NUTS: Nuts are common ingredients in many holiday dishes, but they can be hard to chew and can pose a risk to veneers. If you’re nutty about nuts, opt for nut butter or finely chopped nuts.

– SAFELY SAVORING THE SWEETNESS OF THE SEASON: From meticulously iced cookies to gooey chocolate and peppermint brownies to tempting toffees and sticky candies, the holiday season is synonymous with sweet temptations. However, whenever possible, stick with thin or soft cookies and candies that are kinder to your veneers, or healthier dessert alternatives to reduce the amount of sugar consumption that can lead to decay around their margins.

– WATCH FOR STAINS: Christmas treats like mulled wine, comforting cups of hot coffee or cocoa, and cranberry sauces are teeth and veneer stain-causing culprits. Enjoy these in moderation, and to mitigate the risk of staining, consider sipping beverages through a straw to help direct the liquid away from the front surface of your veneers. Additionally, drink water alongside these treats to aid in rinsing away any staining agents. And remember to rinse or brush afterward.

YEAR-ROUND VENEER CARE: ESSENTIAL PRACTICES

While the holidays may present unique challenges for proper veneer care, embracing year-round practices can ensure the longevity and beauty of your dental investment. Throughout the year, it’s important to continue good oral hygiene, whether you have veneers or not. Regularly brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash remains vital, as these actions prevent stains and maintain the health of your gums. Additionally, if you are a teeth-grinder, consider wearing a nightguard, especially during the stressful holiday season’s hustle and bustle. Grinding can harm veneers and natural teeth alike. Always be mindful of the foods you chew – avoid biting into hard objects like ice or non-food items that could potentially damage your veneers. In addition, follow a well-balanced diet, one rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to promote oral health and overall wellbeing. And don’t forget to schedule routine dental visits to monitor the health of your veneers and promptly address any issues that may have arisen.

CELEBRATE WITH CONFIDENCE

The holiday season is a time to celebrate and forge lasting memories with loved ones. By taking steps to care for your veneers, you can delight in the festive treats and gatherings with confidence, knowing that your radiant smile remains healthy and intact. Apply these strategies not only during Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but throughout the entire year. Doing so will guarantee that your veneers continue to shine brightly as you embrace the joy of every season. 

MAKE-AHEAD BRUNCH IDEAS FOR A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY

The holiday season is swiftly approaching, and undoubtedly, your to-do list, along with your stress level, is growing exponentially. It’s highly likely that one of your most significant sources of stress revolves around preparing delectable holiday meals for your loved ones. When it comes to hosting a memorable holiday brunch, the last thing you want is to be overwhelmed in the kitchen while your guests are reveling in the festivities. The good news is that there are plenty of scrumptious make-ahead options available. When brunchtime arrives, you can effortlessly pop them in the oven or retrieve them from the fridge, ensuring a delightful meal that will surely leave a lasting impression.

Kick your holiday morning off on a sweet note with baked goodies, particularly breads. Breakfast breads and muffins bring a sense of warmth and tradition to the festive season. You can explore delectable options from local bakeries, but you can also bake your own in advance for a delicious brunch with minimal effort. Store in the freezer then simply thaw at room temperature overnight for next-morning enjoyment. Breads and muffins like cranberry, banana chocolate chip, pumpkin spice, and cinnamon apple are all crowd favorites, appealing to both adults and kids alike.

Breakfast casseroles are the perfect addition to your stress-free holiday meal. Many of these hearty dishes are best when prepared a day or two in advance and then baked

just before serving. Most also freeze nicely –just be sure to thaw overnight in the fridge for more consistent baking results. If you’re hosting a younger crowd, consider offering French toast casseroles, which can be customized with a variety of syrups like maple, blueberry, or strawberry, as well as your favorite fruit compotes and jams. Personally, I’m a fan of savory breakfast casserole options, such as quiches and frittatas, stratas, and even breakfast enchiladas. These dishes can be tailored to suit any sized crowd and provide a creative way to

offer both meat and vegetarian options to please just about everyone.

Another crowd-pleaser and an easy makeahead option is the good ol’ hash brown casserole – a quick trip to the freezer section for frozen diced or shredded potatoes makes preparation a breeze. Go the traditional route, or add in crispy bacon, savory ham, spicy sausage, or zesty green onions. Mix in a quick cheese sauce, pour into a baking dish, and top with a sprinkle of your favorite shredded cheese. In the morning,

simply pop it into the oven. If you are feeding a large group, add some seasonal fruit, bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, or biscuits and ham to round out the meal.

Additional brunch suggestions to serve with your festive and delicious holiday spread include:

– Pancakes and Waffles: Make mini pancakes or waffles in advance, then freeze. Reheat them in the oven or toaster on brunch day. Offer various toppings like fresh berries, fruit compote, whipped cream, chocolate chips, and maple syrup.

– Breakfast Burritos: Cook and season scrambled eggs, saute vegetables, and crisp bacon or cook sausage in advance. When it’s time to serve, set up a DIY breakfast burrito station with additional ingredients such as cheese, salsa, avocado, and tortillas for guests to assemble their breakfast wraps.

– Parfaits: Layer yogurt parfaits with granola, berries, and a drizzle of honey in individual jars or glasses. These can be assembled the night before your brunch and kept in the fridge.

– Fruit Salad: A fresh fruit salad is easy to prepare ahead of time. Wash, chop, and mix various fruits such as berries, melon, and citrus. Refrigerate, then add a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of mint leaves just prior to serving.

When it comes to the beloved tradition of holiday brunch, a stress-free meal is the perfect way to easily enjoy the festive season with loved ones. By choosing simple yet delicious dishes that can be prepared in advance, all you need to do the morning of is brew the coffee, set out the plates, and pour yourself a mimosa!

KEEPING THE HOLIDAYS B R IG H T AND SAFE

CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY TIPS

For many, the joy of decorating the Christmas tree is a cherished holiday tradition, yet it’s essential to remember that with the addition of a tree to your home, the risk of fire and accidents increases. To ensure a safe and joyful holiday season, follow these lifesaving steps to minimize risks and create a secure environment for your loved ones.

CHRISTMAS TREES

A real tree can fill your home with both beauty and the invigorating scent of pine. However, it’s crucial to be aware that a live tree can also present a potential fire hazard. When choosing a fresh tree, opt for one of a vibrant green color. The needles of pines and spruces should bend and not break and should be hard to pull off the branches. On fir species, a needle pulled from a fresh tree will snap when bent, much like a fresh carrot. Also, look for a trunk sticky with sap.

Trimming the trunk and using a proper stand are essential steps in maintaining the freshness and safety of your Christmas tree. To trim the trunk, cut off about two inches from the bottom and place the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the reservoir filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. Position your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces to prevent drying. Ensure it doesn’t block doorways or foot traffic.

If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label.

TREE LIGHTS

Use indoor lights strictly indoors and outdoor lights exclusively outdoors. Always look for the UL label on light sets. Carefully inspect your lights, examining sockets for any signs of breakage or cracks, frayed or barbed wires, or loose connections. Replace or promptly repair any damaged light sets.

To prevent overloading circuits, use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Positioning extension cords against walls prevents tripping hazards. Avoid running cords under rugs, as this can create heat build-up and increase the risk of fire. And always turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house.

TREE ORNAMENTS

Always use a proper step stool or ladder when reaching high areas, ensuring a stable and secure foundation for your tasks.

Under no circumstances should you position lit candles on a tree or in proximity to flammable materials. This precaution prevents the risk of fire hazards. And exercise care in ornament placement –refrain from hanging fragile decorations or those with small, detachable parts on lower branches, where they may be within reach of children or pets.

Speaking of children, do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. This precautionary measure helps prevent them from mistaking other ornaments for edible items.

Christmas tree safety is of paramount importance to ensure a joyful and hazard-free holiday season. By taking simple precautions and prioritizing tree safety, families can relish the magic of the season without the worry of preventable disasters, allowing for a truly merry and stress-free celebration. 

OUR HERITAGE

WHERE WE SHALL MEET AND PART NO MORE

Cemeteries are open air museums full of art, history, and stories that give context to local historical events and community demographics. Many families gather to learn about their ancestors and honor them with memorials. Cemeteries are sacred ground.

In 2017, the Town of Wake Forest designated Friendship Chapel Cemetery as a Local Landmark, located approximately one mile south of downtown Wake Forest. This cemetery was the community’s first African-American religious congregation and is the final resting place for generations of AfricanAmerican residents of Wake Forest, Forestville, and the surrounding area, including many who journeyed from slavery to freedom.

In the mid-1800s, this was the site of a “brush harbor” or “hush harbor,” where enslaved people from the nearby Ligon, Dunn, and Hartsfield plantations gathered in secret to worship. This site was described as a place where two hills met, creating a secluded, cave-like space that was “overshadowed with aged pines, cedars, oaks, hollies, dogwood, and assorted evergreens’’ and where the ground was “carpeted with ancient violets, running rose bushes, and various flowers.” This secluded piece of land provided enslaved men and women refuge where they could fully express themselves – their joy, sadness, longing, and spirituality – without their oppressors’ oversight.

Nelson Ligon attended Forestville Baptist Church in 1860 while enslaved on the Ligon family plantation. Oral tradition tells of how the Spirit so moved Ligon during a revival meeting in 1866 that he fell from the church’s gallery or balcony. Influenced by Ligon’s display of faith, white leaders of Forestville Baptist Church helped Ligon and other newly emancipated African Americans establish an independent church in 1867. The new church was named

Friendship Chapel Baptist Church for the kindness and good feelings surrounding the joint effort.

Friendship Chapel Church grew steadily between 1867 and 1929 when a new brick building was dedicated. Friendship Chapel members continued to conduct burials at the cemetery until the late 1940s or early 1950s when a new cemetery was started behind the church building.

After being designated as a Local Landmark in 2017, the cemetery was surveyed by archaeologists and historians using ground penetrating radar. Between geophysical (GPR) and surface surveys, an estimated total of 567 individuals were identified in the cemetery. This number likely underrepresents the actual count because the GPR survey was limited by vegetation and slope. The remaining headstones showcase African American folk art traditions like hand-carved illustrations. In some cases, the use of images in place of text may be attributed to the limited educational opportunities available to African Americans in the late 19th century.

Members of the congregation and the descendants of its founding families have continued to maintain Friendship Chapel Cemetery. However, the cemetery has suffered intentional damage. Grave markers have been spray painted, knocked over, and broken. There is also evidence of bike and ATV tracks around the fragile markers. As an important local landmark, the perimeter of Friendship Chapel Cemetery is now protected by a fence. Please do not enter this sacred place without permission. 
