MINISTER TO ADDRESS CANADIAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY ANNUAL CONFERENCE Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris on Wednesday will address the 32nd Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) annual conference, which runs June 5-8 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Norris, who is also Minister responsible for SaskPower and Minister responsible for Innovation, will provide an overview of the recently announced Centre for Research in Nuclear Medicine and Materials Science at the University of Saskatchewan. The province is investing $30 million over seven years in the new centre, which will make Saskatchewan the focal point for nuclear research and development in Western Canada. On Monday, Norris met with students attending the CNS student conference, which is being held as part of the annual conference and participated in the evaluation of student research presentations. "I am honoured to have the opportunity to update the Canadian Nuclear Society on recent developments in our province," Norris said. "Saskatchewan is building a critical mass of research capability that will support the nuclear industry for decades to come. In the process, we are creating economic opportunity for a growing province and bettering the lives of people throughout the world." Delegates to the annual conference will also learn more about SaskPower's world-leading Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Project, which will be among the first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage projects in the world when it begins operations in 2014. SaskPower Vice-President Mike Monea will participate in a plenary session on alternative energy technologies Wednesday. The CNS annual conference is expected to attract more than 400 scientists, engineers, technologists, government officials, senior executives and students. The 2012 CNS annual conference will be held in Saskatoon, from June 10-13. "Saskatoon is well suited to host next year's annual conference, with its deep ties to the uranium industry and the growing importance of the University of Saskatchewan as a centre for nuclear research," Norris said. "It is also a warm and hospitable community blessed with beautiful scenery and a dynamic economy. CNS delegates won't be disappointed." The CNS promotes the exchange of information on all aspects of nuclear science and technology and its applications. This includes nuclear power generation, fuel production, uranium mining and refining and management of radioactive wastes.

All-EQC Meeting - March 29-30, 2011 Submitted by Gene Kimbley Twenty seven of the 34 EQC reps sat through a full agenda at this meeting in La Ronge. Glenn Lafleur of AREVA and Darwin Roy of CAMECO gave their usual employment, scholarship and donation updates for their mine sites. There was discussion about the definition of an RSN and when a northerner who moves south is no longer considered a northerner. Sarah Eaton and Chuong Pham of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) outlined safety precautions taken by CNSC following the Japanese disaster. All nuclear facilities in Canada, including our mines, were asked to provide an update of their emergency preparedness plans. Carolanne Inglis-McQuay again explained the proposed ore haul from McArthur River to McLean Lake, to re-commission the mill about a year in advance of Cigar Lake or production in mid-2013. The EQC still has concerns about the condition of northern roads. Cigar Lake general manager Steve Lowen updated reps on his operation. The bottom of Shaft 2 (a ventilation shaft) will be frozen to allow sinking to be completed. One jet bore machine has been purchased, and three more will be by the time production starts. The size of the lease has been reduced. Rabbit Lake GM Dave Rezanoff said his site is in its 36th year of operation. It will further refurbish its acid plant this summer, and is planning for a new tailings management facility to accommodate milling of ore well into the future. The Eagle Point underground mine presently has reserves to 2017. Vincent Laniece of AREVA explained plans to expand the JEB tailings management facility at McLean Lake. They will do this by adding a liner of crushed rock mixed with clay and by raising the pit crest by 6-8 meters. Cameco’s Todd Swenson offered an update on McArthur River. A new mining method of the site boxhole boring, will be used on areas where
raiseboring is impractical. Exploration continues to the north. Daley McIntyre explained the current situation at Key Lake, where mill revitalization, slope stabilization at the Deilmann pit, and reclamation of the Deilmann north waste rock pile are under way. Cameco’s Rob Stanger updated the group on the status of the Millennium Project, for which the EIS will be submitted in 2012. Dave Rezanoff offered a very interesting explanation of how the ship in which a uranium cargo was recently damaged at sea was remodeled. All the containers and equipment came back to Key Lake for cleanup and repacking. Bethany Haalbloom, a post-doctoral fellow at the U of S, came to ask if she could use the EQC as a research topic. She wants to hold focus groups to evaluate how democratic the group is. She has previously worked in South America. She reviewed a couple of other Impact Management Agreement, one in B.C. and the existing Impact Management Agreement between Cameco, Areva and the Athabasca communities. The group discussed several other topics, including restructuring of the three subcommittees, determination of impact communities, upcoming events, the Cigar Lake water management project, and the Cumulative Effects Monitoring program, which was dropped by the province in 2008. New subcommittee chairs were elected by consensus of each group. Felix McDonald of Fond du Lac will continue to chair the Athabasca group, and Norman Wolverine of English River First Nation continues as chair of the west side group. Erin Carter of La Ronge was elected chair of the South Central Group. The group held an in-camera round table session closing the meeting.
