MyjourneyfromengineeringschoolatCornellUniversity tomycurrentroleastheCo-FounderandChiefof OperationsatMassRoboticshasbeenfilledwithadventure, andmarkedbybothtriumphsandchallenges,particularly asawomaninthetechfield.

ItallstartedduringmytimeatCornell,whereIpursueda BachelorofScienceinElectricalEngineering.Therewere veryfewwomeninmyclasses,whichinitiallyposedsome challenges. Myexperienceinhighschoolphysicsand calculusclasseshadalreadypreparedmeforthis,soitwas afamiliarsituation. Ratherthandwellingonthe challenges,Ichosetofocusonbeingateamplayerand contributor.Ittaughtmetheimportanceofnotaskingfor specialtreatmentbutinsteadworkingtogethertocreate opportunitiesforeveryone.I'veusedthis“teamplayer” attitudethroughoutmycareerandithasservedmewelland theengineeringeducationalbackgroundlaidthefoundation formycareerintechnology

Center.Here,Iencounteredasimilarsetofchallenges,now intheworkforceinapredominantlymale-dominatedfield.I hadtocontinuallyprovemyselfandmytechnicalexpertise, butagain,wasdeterminedtobeateamplayerand contributor.Iservedinvariousroles,includingservingas theChiefScientistforAcousticPredictionSystems, Systems&TestEngineer,andSonarSystemsAnalyst. Duringthispartofmycareer,Ifoundmyselfaboardnaval ships,whereIwasoftentheonlyfemalepresence.This presentedauniquesetofobstacles,fromnavigatingthe dynamicsofanall-maleenvironmenttoensuringthatmy contributionswerevaluedandrespected. Atthispointthe projectsandnewequipmentwewereinstallingwere excitingandfirstoftheirkind,somyfocuswasontesting andteachingthecrewhowtousetheequipment.This periodnotonlyrefinedmytechnicalskillsbutalsoinstilled inmeapassionforinnovation.

Mycareerthentransitionedtotheprivatesector,whereI heldseniorpositionsinBusinessDevelopmentand Engineering&TechnicalResourceManagementatGeneral Dynamicsandotherdefensecontractors.Thechallenges continued,butIpersisted,steadilybuildingareputationfor myexpertiseandcommitmenttoinnovation.These experiencesbroadenedmyperspectiveandexposedmeto differentfacetsofthetechnologyindustry.
