TheCincinnatiRecycling&ReuseHubcelebratedourthirdanniversaryofbeingopenon April1,2024.Itisincredibletoseehowmuchtheorganizationhasgrownandhowmuch materialwehavesavedanddivertedinsuchashortperiodoftime.Lastyear, withyour support,weraised$18,000injustthreeweekstopurchaseanadditionalbalerandcover initial operating costs to allow us to start taking #1 thermoform plastics. These are plastics which are unable to be recycled curbside, but now, instead of going to the landfill, theycanbecollectedforrecyclingattheHub.

In2023,wesurpassed375tonstotalofmaterialsdivertedfromthelandfill.In2024,wewill crossamonumentalmilestone-1millionpounds(!!!)ofwastedivertedfromthelandfill across our recycling programs and through our reuse shop. And we are just getting started, as 2024 will also see us open a third day for recycling drop off and reuse shopping.

From the passion for sustainability of our recyclers, to the creativity of those attending craft nights and "shopping" in our reuse center - the Hub would not be where it is today without you, our dedicated volunteers, donors, and customers. We are grateful that we get to see and hear your stories and that you have also shared in the creation of the Hub's story. Thank you so much for your continued support of the work that we do. ALetterfromour ExecutiveDirector

2023wasabanneryearfortheHub!

We were able to grow as an organization – adding an Administrative Assistant, Development Coordinator, Marketing Manager, and an additional Warehouse Support Staff person and increasing hours for two other positions – taking our total number of employeesupto11andourtotalemployeehoursupto345staffhours/week.

We’re also incredibly proud of the fact that a lot of the work we do at the Hub goes to help other nonprofit organizations. In 2023 alone, we shipped and/or delivered over 50 tons of items to over 40 nonprofits, including many in the Greater Cincinnati area. With grantfunding,wewerealsoabletoholdtwofreeelectronicsdrop-offevents,oneforour neighborsinLowerPriceHillinApril2023,andanotherforresidentsofLincolnHeightsin October 2023. For those events, we eliminated (as best we could) the cost and transportation barriers that often exist for lower-income communities, so that individuals in those areas can get rid of potentially hazardous materials, which can causehealthissuesifnotdisposedofproperly.

As has been the case since we opened in April 2021, the amount of support we’ve received to keep doing what we do – diverting things from the landfill for better purposes and educating others on ways to live more sustainably – has been tremendous. We thank you for your continued support as we grow and increase our operationsthisyearandinthefuture!

WasteDiverted fromtheLandfill

Curious about the breakdown of the waste diverted from the landfill? Our leading category by weight of waste diverted is electronics. Improper disposal of electronics can lead to chemicals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and nickel getting into the environment. Ensuring the safe disposal of these items helps prevent adverse environmental and health effects related to these contaminants.
