WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE JUNE ISSUE OF EMOTION I hope this Edition will give you an insight into life inside Emerson Grange during the coronavirus pandemic. I can only imagine what it must be like for relatives and close friends unable to visit and get firsthand reassurance of the care and support we are providing to all our residents and team members.

This dreadful situation has been very challenging but throughout the early crisis I have been so very proud of the great team that I have the privilege to work with. The care, compassion but above all professionalism with which the team applied themselves during a very unsettling period is testament to their commitment to minimise disruption, reassure and support our residents emotionally when family were unable to be a part of their lives. There are just too many team members to mention individually but this Edition does have a focus on just one of that very long list.

We do hope to have a summer party and barbecue for all our residents, family, and team members when the government permits, and we are satisfied it is safe to do so and I very much look forward to that day.

LIFE IN LOCKDOWN WITH OSA: TEAM INTERVIEW As a Senior Nurse, I have a responsibility to maintain mine and others safety.

My elderly residents need my support at this difficult time, and I could not let them down by continuing leading my life as its always been, I had to made drastic changes.

Once Covid-19 was all over in the news and UK was not yet in lock down, I asked myself “if I couldn’t go to work, so may be my other colleagues and what will happen to my residents who are the most vulnerable group in society?”

I knew I had to keep myself safe from the Covid-19 virus to be able to continue working.

It is only when I am safe, that I can work to keep my residents safe.

I have a family whom I dearly love, and they understand the nature of my job and are very proud and supportive of me.

I had no idea how the Covid-19 virus was going to be, but made the decision to live in the home so that I had no interaction with the general public thereby minimising the risk of contracting Covid-19 and bringing it either to my family or my residents.

I approached management for accommodation on site and my request was granted by the General Manager. I have been living on site three days before the lockdown and I have no regrets with the decision I made.

I have other colleagues who moved on site as well and we can spend the evenings chatting while observing social distancing. I was able to interact more with the residents answering their questions to minimise their fears and anxieties about the Covid-19 pandemic.

My main worry was how the residents would view us if we showed fear and stress because of the virus. I got other staff together so that we could sing and dance while the residents watched. This was my own way of ensuring we didn’t transfer negative energy to the residents.

I spent a lot of time reading and listening to the news in my spare time. I called family and friends to check on them, mostly video calls.

Every conversation was filled with Covid-19 virus discussion and I always listened with keen interest.

There was various information about Covid-19 related topics in the news which can be very confusing but I stuck with Public Health England and Cinnamon’s weekly updates in order not to be confused.

Life in lockdown feels different to normal life but I have used the time in lockdown to reflect on life as whole and I will make changes to certain things in my life forever, as anything can happen at any time and the world as a whole has no control over.

• Ensured that all carers adhered strictly to infection control policies and procedure to stop Covid-19 spreading in the home.

• Encouraged and motivated care team members as they go about their daily routine in the home.

• Managed to get a GP to visit the home to see some residents.

• Ensured that the carers use the correct PPE’s as advised by Public Health England.

• Supported both floors and was always smiling through a very difficult period.

• Her attitude and resilience during Covid-19 has been exceptional.

JULIA KALBFELL

RESIDENT INTERVIEW Where were you born?

My mother told me she delivered my 5 sisters, 1 brother and I at home in London, where I spent most of my growing up years. I am 95 years old and still counting.

Who were your parents and what were their professions?

Oh! I had such good parents, so loving and caring. I was named after my mother; Julia and my father was Charles. May they continue to rest in peace. My father was a ‘docker’ while my mother was a very busy housewife, looking after her 7 children.

How will you describe your childhood? Share some of your most exciting experiences with us My childhood was good. You can imagine the joy, little fights and all the fun that comes with growing up together with my 6 siblings. We got the best care and attention from mum who was always at home while my father worked, provided for us, and made sure we lived as a happy family.

Where did you go to school?

I remember I went to Canterbury school in London, changed schools at a point and left school at the age of 14. We did not have to go on and on like they do today.

Where did you work?

I enjoyed my first job in a clothing factory which also taught me so much about fashion. I joined

another company as a secretary but left when I got married to start a family and raise my children.

How did you meet your husband?

The interesting part of my story is that I met my loving husband, Stanley Frederick at my first workplace. He used to throw joke fingers at me with his friend, giggling! He gathered courage one day and told me I was beautiful and would want us to be friends. One thing led to the other, we had a date, we clicked and eventually got married ‘many moons ago.’

Tell us about how you got married I got married to my loving husband, Stanley Frederick in a church. I remember it was harvest time, during the second World War. It was a nice and very memorable day though.

What Work did your husband do?

My husband worked in the army but was retired when he injured his arm and could not be in the army anymore. He later worked internationally.

I have very interesting memories about our stay for some years in Africa. We had a lovely time in Lagos. My husband met Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Nigeria when she opened the Power Station that he worked on. We have a lovely picture of that moment to cherish. My husband stayed behind initially but I had to come back ‘because I was scared my dog would be bitten by a snake,’ laughed! Well, I returned early because of my children. My husband later returned to the UK and continued to work in construction until

he retired. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services and achievements in construction. It was a very proud moment.

was such a great experience. I enjoyed all the personal care and attention it came with.

How was your married life?

Our marriage was good, in fact beautiful, because my husband was my best friend. He was such a caring and loving husband and father. We stayed happily married, never swore at each other, respected and loved each other until his death. My parents loved him too. Oh, what a lovely family we had!

What kind of mother were you?

My children tell me, and I also believe that I was a good mother. I did my best and gave them what every good mother would give with ‘a sweet touch of love.’ I made sure my children were my best friends, we played together, and our home was always peaceful and warm. I am sure that is why they are still so proud of me and ensure that I get the best of care.

How many children did you have?

We had three children, Jennifer, Barbara and Julia-Anne and many grand and great grandchildren. I had my children at home, I did not want to go to the hospital. I had a bad experience with my first child and so vowed never to deliver in hospital. Home delivery

What advice will you give to young people of today Love your family. Be focused, be truthful to yourself always, work hard with love and care, be content with what you have, then you will enjoy life and live long to see your great grandchildren.

‘Lockdown’ by Kate, Year 5 Streets are quiet, roads are silent The joyful times we miss with our loved ones The world spins in silence Thursday we clap with joy Rainbows through glass windows brighten up the world People come together to support the key workers Unsure of the future… now I’m understanding more.

Whoever knew that lockdown was going to be such fun I’ve cleaned and painted and tidied, now all my jobs are done I’m missing all my friends tho, can’t wait to see them soon To have a hug and touch them will be so much better than zoom!!

Work was very different with hardly anyone there Lots of empty classrooms and lonely spinning chairs I watched the birds being busy and flying in fresh air I saw a change on top of my head, lots of new grey hair I noticed much less traffic and no planes up in the sky I couldn’t hug my friends when they had a little cry All my shopping was done on the internet and deliveries came most days I made new things and got creative and my family I amazed!

It was a funny old time, this lockdown But I did get so much done Now please get back to normal so I can have a bit more fun!

MONTHLY RECIPE: DESSERT DONUTS

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS 500 g Flour Strong White

1 ea Egg Medium

55 g Sugar Caster T&L

100 g Egg Yolk Medium

5 g Salt Table

100 g Butter Unsalted

150 ml Milk Whole

500 g Dessert Creme Patissiere-Doughnut

40 g Yeast Fresh, crumbled or 15gms active dried yeast

500 g Jam Mixed Fruit 2,000 g Oil Rapeseed

Lightly warm the milk for 30 sec in the microwave and keep aside.

Place the dry ingredients in a machine mixing bowl and mix with a dough cook for 1 min.

In a separate bowl mix the egg and the egg yolk. Add the milk and crumble the yeast.

Mix with a whisk so that all the yeast mixes evenly.

Add this to the dry mix and mix on speed 2 till all the mix is Incorporated.

Increase the speed to medium and once all the mix is thoroughly combined then add the soft butter in small quantity 7. Increase the speed to 8 and mix till the dough is soft, elastic and shiny approx 6-8 mins.

8. All the butter should be evenly mixed in the dough.

9. Take of the dough hook and scrape any dough in the bowl.

10. Cover the bowl with a cling film and place the bowl in the fridge to chill for 1.5 hours.

Shaping the dough 11. Remove the bowl, sprinkle light dusting of flour on a clean work surface and transfer the dough.

12. Keep 4-5 clean trays ready and lightly sprinkle the tray with flour.

13. Using a dough cutter divide the dough into 30 gm portions using a scale.

14. Flatten each dough with your palm then bring the edges to the centre and then roll into tight buns either on the surface or with your hand.

15. Place on the tray and leave enough space to prove.

16. Cover the tray lightly with cling film and allow to prove at 22 to 25 degrees for 1.5 hours or until double in size.

17. Heat a deep fat fryer to 170 degrees.

18. Using the dough scraper carefully lift the dough and place in the hot oil.

19. Cook for 3 mins on each side and do not attempt to press the uncooked side or they may deflate.

20. Remove using a slotted spoon and place in a tray with cinnamon or vanilla sugar.

21. Once cook insert a hole using scissor or small knife on the circumference and pipe custard or jam or any filling.

LOCKDOWN APT. OWNER INTERVIEW Regrettably, we had only moved a few months before and during the move all of my nooks and crannies of hiding places had been discovered and treasured items discarded, so we had very little reserves to fall back on. A day later there was a knock on the door and Vicar Johnny stood there with milk and bread.

A true Mannah from Heaven. It was clear we could not rely on the supermarkets for a steady supply of provisions over the next few weeks, so the family and Vicar Johnny again came to our rescue in times of crisis.

I asked Georgina “I wonder what will happen if they lock us down?” “Nothing much”, she replied. “When I was a student nurse the whole of our hospital was quarantined due to an epidemic which had caused many deaths, and nobody was allowed to leave the hospital grounds”. With Georgina expressing such confidence, who was I to worry?

A few days later came the day that the country went into lockdown and all doors were closed and the nation was told to stay indoors. “Peace and Quiet”, I thought. But two days later it was time to book our weekly slot for our Tesco delivery, the list was compiled ready to be submitted. When we opened up the computer, there were no delivery slots for the next five weeks. Panic stations! What was I to do for breakfast? What could I put on my toast? A call went out and an urgent Family Executive Meeting was called. After some discussion, the executives left saying, “Leave it with us” .

As the men amongst us will know, there are those who hoard and stow away for a rainy day and those who must have absolute tidiness and discard any item that has no immediate use. I am the hoarder and Georgina is the discarder in our partnership.

One of the highlights in this unsettling period was when George came to deliver a goody bag which included an Easter Egg from Cinnamon. We as a family make a big thing of Easter and Cinnamon’s kind gesture went a little way in easing our disappointment. For the first time, I felt I belonged to this village. Thank you.

We do not realise how dependent you become on other people. What would we have done without the staff running up the stairs to bring the items we had ordered on the internet? We have to thank Raul for organizing the St George’s Day Quiz – it filled two whole days of brain power. Thanks to you all.

Whilst we were struggling to organize what little reserves we had, the internet searches were ongoing.

Slowly we began to find traders that would sell us fresh vegetables and milk. This has created one or two problems; we could not obtain eggs locally. We had not realized how important a culinary ingredient they were! So, when one supplier said he could let us have some we immediately accepted his offer and the box of the freshest vegetables and fruit arrived we discovered a tray of thirty eggs, which have taken up one whole shelf in our fridge. Another mishap occurred that from another supplier we suddenly received twenty one, four pint bottles of milk.

Having paid for the milk we were unable to return them. I like milk, I like milk puddings. I like plenty of milk on my cereal in the mornings, but I could not manage twenty one bottles in the time it would take for the milk to go off. The fridge was emptied and rearranged, my precious cheese would have to spend the night in the spare bedroom with all the windows open. We quickly tried to contact anybody we thought might like some milk and left a message with St Peters Church to see if they knew anybody who might like some, we finally managed to dispose of all the milk, except for four bottles which we had to tip down the sink.

We are unfortunately on the Government screening list and are required to stay within our apartment and not have visitors as we are vulnerable to the virus.

We are also lucky that we have a carer call once a day otherwise we would not see anybody, and we did not realise how much we missed human contact when you do not have any. We are lucky in that our apartment overlooks the courtyard and entrance to Emerson Grange care home so we are able to see people coming and going. We know the regular exercisers who do a walk around the yard every fine day. It’s very frustrating when we see individuals who we conversed with prior to lock own being pushed around in a wheelchair, who have obviously injured themselves, but you are unable to help or be even aware that they are having difficulties. You watch them walk by but they never look up so that we might wave and wish them a good day. We can tell you who regularly goes to fetch the post and which taxi drivers ignore the parking lines outside the Grange doors. From our window high in the garret we have watched the season change from winter through spring to summer, we had the tree blossom which heralded spring, the azalea give its spark of orange and red, the buds on the shrubs swell and burst into life. There is nothing like watching other men work, but there is no better joy in seeing that work coming to fruition. Well done the gardener, you have given us much pleasure, and although we cannot feel and experience the changing seasons we can see from out window we know that nature is following her course.

The family come to see us but are not able to come into the apartment. When they knock the tradition is that we, in the past, have rushed forward to give

each other a big hug, but now we have to take a step backwards instead of forwards. When we need to have a talk face to face with our visitors they stand on the other side of the corridor and we sit on chairs at the back of our hall to maintain the social distancing rules. Although we try not to, we are conscious that at times we are a bit noisy and we are grateful to our neighbours for their tolerance - THANK YOU. The trouble with living in a close community is that you meet people face to face and exchange your news and therefore have no need to have telephone numbers to talk to each other, until we are struck by a crisis. Social contact is important, and Georgina and I sorely miss our neighbors and at times feel isolated.

I want to know how our neighbours are, or whether the building is falling down. We try not to be too curious and like to give people their own space and don’t tend to collect phone numbers or apartment numbers, but oh how I wished we had, I have a letter on my side for an apartment owner which has been here for four weeks because I don’t know her telephone number or apartment number and being forbidden to go out I have no way of sending it.

It would be good if we could have a small directory of contacts or a bulletin board where news or messages could be left. Emerson Park is a caring village community of like-minded people who in times of adversity want to help each other. Loneliness is the crippling condition we all suffer from time to time and if you feel like a chat then ring us, we would love to talk to you. Lockdown is a new experience for all of us, we are all learning, adding to the fact that Emerson Park is a new venture we still have a lot to learn but we have all learnt to cope with it as a village community. Both Georgina and I have been put on the Government screening programme which means we should not leave the apartment until the end of June so we anticipated that most of you will be using your wings before us. We look forward to that day when again we will be able to shake hands and enjoy a meal in the restaurant together.

My background – How I came to go to South Africa – My time there.

the same as they had been for years, I could walk around Cape Town alone no problem.

My name is Sylvia Jassoy, I came to live at Emerson Park as an apartment owner in April 2019 having lost my partner.

For the first 3/4 years we lived in a small flat virtually on the beach in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town up the West Coast.

I had worked in education. When I trained to be a teacher I studied English and Laban movement studies (which have always been my passion).

We spent a large proportion of our time exploring the country and going on several long trips, looking at the magical and varied mountainous landscapes experiencing several changes of climate as we travelled around. Both gardeners we enjoyed the flora and fauna. We stayed in National parks small hamlets getting to know the local people. I spent some time helping in a school in a poor farming area in the Western Cape. Nearly every child lived in a township or huts, walked to school every day barefoot usually 3-5km and arrived in spotless white shirt, grey skirts, or trousers and never less than 60 children in a class. Still to this day no child in South Africa has free education (unless they get sponsorship).

I became a Headteacher of 2 challenging multiracial social priority schools in the London Borough of Wandsworth, following this as an Assistant Education Officer. During my period in education I was given the opportunity to undertake more study. I also had the privilege to work with some of the most talented teachers, together we created a community school and developed many strategies which are currently common practice in schools and children’s centre’s today. Trying to meet the needs of the challenging local communities in London. My partner John Glover had spent all his career in shipping, travelling, and living all over the world.

In January 1996 both retired he took me to South Africa and announced this is where he would like us to live. After negotiation we agreed to live in South Africa in the winter and summer in the UK. We did this for many years. Nelson Mandela was Prime Minister and the country was full of hopefulness and promise. The rural areas of the country were much

John helped many of the locals to learn various skills.

We continued to explore Cape Town, garden route and big fishing areas. The sky in South Africa has to be seen to be believed (no pollution). Where ever we went we found so many churches of so many denominations, so many of the people of whatever colour or creed have a faith, and this is the same today.

After about 3 years we moved to a place called Fish Hoek, a small seaside town, with the most beautiful beach, to a small house. On the first day there I stood in the small back garden, I heard beautiful singing, it was the sounds of the workers going back to their townships. When the black people were slaves it was a tradition for them to sing after their days toil and many still do so today. I found this very moving.

Our stay in Fish Hoek was very different from our previous few years. We decided to explore many of the activities and interests we had been unable to explore while we were working. We spent 16 happy years there, we played golf, John bought a telescope and pursued his love of astronomy, being able to study and go for lectures at the University.

I had the opportunity to study the teacher’s course for Body Control Pilates which had come from London to a studio in Cape Town. I joined one of the most prestigious flower clubs in Cape Town and had the opportunity to use some of the beautiful flowers in flowers arrangements. The Arts, Ballet and Theatre were being developed and we saw many exciting and innovative productions.

Mandela died when Zuma became Prime Minister, very sadly during this time corruption filtered into the government and all the progress that should and could have been made in this beautiful country had been hampered. John became ill and died very quickly. Our wonderful lifestyle came to an end.

The truck we travelled in has strong headlights and the ranger was so enthusiastic and we were always late for supper so not much drinking time for us, but it was all worth it.

January 2020 I arrived back in Cape Town on Tuesday 7th January – Alone. I stayed in a flat high up in the hills above Fish Hoek. I had planned things to do: • To get fit • To be reunited with many old friends, especially my Pilates colleagues.

• To attend a 7-day retreat • To go to several lectures - mindfulness and meditation • A trip to the Wine lands with my grandchildren • Attend a conference As well as seeing old friends and places the highlight of my trip was the retreat at Babylonstoren.

Babylonstoren Babylonstoren is a garden situated in the Wine Lands area. The inspiration for Babylonstoren is the original company’s garden in Cape Town which supplied the

Kruger National Park 2019 We had always intended to go and visit the Kruger National Park. One of the most outstanding National Parks in the world. My family and I decided to go, it was quite a park. We flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg and from there straight to the park in a small plane. We were met by a ranger called Joseph who looked after us morning, noon and well into the night for 5 days. We were able to see at close range many animals which are becoming very rare. The park is totally natural. We were taken out twice a day 5am and at about 5pm, firstly when the animals are waking up and as dusk was falling and roads are still warm from the sun.

spice fleets of the Dutch East India Company with fresh fruits and vegetables during the 17th & 18th centuries. Over the years the farm had been worked.

In 2007 new owners took over, restored the Cape Dutch buildings, and developed the farm and added accommodation. Everything grown is totally organic, Pest control is finding a balance within nature and is considered the best way to control pests, ducks sully forth early in the mornings to do snail duty in the vineyards. The head gardener leads the chefs out late in the mornings to pick the perfect vegetables and fruits for the meals and juice served to guests.

The retreat I attended was based in the restored farm house set around the pool. The material to be studied was all based on Pilates movement yoga mindfulness and meditation. The practical work took place mainly outside around the pool or by a lake. This took 2 sessions a day. Also, on offer were guided farm walks, a juice workshop which took the best part of a day, we collected our own ingredients preparing them and tasting the results, refining them until we were satisfied. We ate off site at a couple of other wine farms. Altogether an excellent experience very full on.

Fun followed when my grandchildren and friends arrived, and we embarked on a tour of the winelands on a tram. Stopping at wine farms of your choice apart form the wine and copious amount of delicious food the banter and climbing on and off the trams was quite exhausting. No sooner had the young people gone back it became clear that this horrible virus was spreading throughout the world.

My family and I felt I should return from South Africa early. I was so happy when I arrived back to my home at Emerson and saw all the Emerson Family.

MAIN MEAL DELIVERY: TAKEAWAY We are introducing a main meal delivery service of set meals on set days on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays starting from Monday the 11th May. This will start as a two-week trial and if successful will continue with your support.

We will require you to order in advance from Reception by 11am so please order • Monday’s meal by Friday at 11am.

• Wednesday’s meal by Monday at 11am • Friday’s meal by Wednesday at 11am.

All meals will be priced at £7 and the cost will be added to your account. The meals will be delivered to your door between 2pm and 3pm. Meals will be served in a disposable box.

You will need to supply your own cutlery and condiments.

We hope this this will help in supporting you and prove to be a welcome change. As always please feel free to give us your comments on possible improvements that can be made.
