MOVIE REVIEW

Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu

Pawan Kalyan’s performance is extra ordinary. There are some powerful dialogues in this movie, which evoked solid response. People whistled and wooed when they heard some dialogues such as ‘naku tikkaleste cheema aina okate CM aina okate,’ ‘media nee umpudugathe kadu unchokodaniki..’ Also, there would be a sattire. Songs are okay. The choreography was good and so was the cinematography by Shyam K Naidu. The first song was Jaramochindi followed by extra-ordinary song. The fourth song is Melikalu wherein Pawan Kalyan where emphasis would be on Pawan Kalyan’s movie. The climax is the main asset of the movie. Pawan Kalyan walks with youngsters in the state to take on the corruption and injustice (while the Thaladinchuku song runs in the background). Guys, this scene looked superb as the youths who walked with Pawan Kalyan were his real fans. Fights were also good in this

movie. There was a hijra style fight as rowdies were draped in sarees. This fight was quite rib tickling and audience enjoyed it to the core.

This flicks holds mirror up to society. Don’t miss it!

10 NOVEMBER 2012 | WWW.CINESPRINT.COM

While Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh movie is a pakka mass entertainer (maaanchi oopunna cinema), Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu is a message oriented film. However, one would definitely love the movie for many things—right from Pawan Kalyan’s acting to screenplay and direction by Puri Jagannadh. The director, who earlier faced disappointment at box office with Devudu Chesina Manushulu has finally proved himself with Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu. The characters suited well to the actors. The director earlier said that the character of Rambabu was close to Pawan Kalyan’s real character. So, don’t miss this movie folks.

Denikaina Ready

MOVIE REVIEW The movie doesn’t have a great story to flaunt. Dialogues are not cheesy but have healthy humor at most times throughout. A decent story and a good screenplay make it all the more watchable. Well thought out characters and a good script for a comedy-oriented movie are appreciated. Chakri and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s contribution to the music is fine. Slick editing job in the movie. FWith the expectations bar set too low for a movie from Manchu Vishnu, this film can easily score at the box

office. With entertainment as the sole idea of the movie, the movie delivers but for a few nitty-gritty glitches that may be neglected. With the performance aspects in mind, Denikaina Ready is a decent film to watch. Brahmanandam is excellent with his part, a major role for the success of the film. Denikaina Ready is a good comedyoriented movie and a thorough entertainer throughout the length. Relaxingly good for a few chuckles.

Maattrran Caste : Suriya,Kajal Agarwal Director : KV Anand Producer : Kalpathi S Aghoram Music Director : Harris Jayaraj

Surya as conjoined twins portrays the best and he can expect to hog limelight at the awards at all levels. Fans are sure to repeatedly visit this film which is a double delight. Maattrraan shall be a landmark to Surya and falls in the not-to-miss genre.

12 NOVEMBER 2012 | WWW.CINESPRINT.COM

Surya shows distinct differences between both the characters in looks, dressing and behavior. And he excels in acting under as visioned by the director. Especially Surya’s make over as Akhilan with traits of Vimalan creeping up post his death, are absorbing. Kajol tags on well. Vivek is good in his comedy. Isha Sherwani cameo provided the necessary twist in the film which moved at a rapid pace, only after her entry. This film will be a milestone for the entire crew. Technical values in the special facial scanning led by VFX Supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan is awesome and path breaking to the Indian Panorama. Harris

Jayaraj grooved well into the slot of the film by rendering different genre songs for the moods of both the characters. ‘Yaaro Yaaro’ by Thamarai sung by Karthik & Priya Himesh is one that is sure ring in your heart once out of the ambiance.

Surya as Akhilan excels when confronted with the death of his body double. And the ways he tries to lure Kajol amidst the thick of happenings is also quite interesting. French star Reda Oumouzone has done his best as a suave hulk in the negative role.

Kollywood Action Hero Vikram, flaunts his six pack persona, but latter settles down to brain play. The story takes you through various vagaries faced by a sincere officer. And the rest is how he overcomes all the hurdles with his stellar intelligence. Jagapathi Babu gives a fresh look for this film and he fits the bill as an urban police officer. Soundtracks by G V Prakash are already topping the charts. Uyirin Uyirae sung by Saidhavi, Sathya Prakash scores the top of the charts. Sivathandavam by SPB is another song that inches you towards the climax. Although the other songs are equally good they make one wonder whether they have listened earlier. Thandavam is a differently dealt power packed action entertainer.

MOVIE REVIEW

Thandavam is all about the hero’s mission in saving the nation’s honor by recapturing the lost defense secrets. It mainly deals with the intrinsic way the national intelligence agency, RAW, works and about the weird world of the blind. It shows how an unfortunate blind soul could change the fate with the extra powers, he is blessed with. It is a first half of brawn play and the second half of brain play well blended. Interesting movie, to be watched.

Sandalwood

Kalpana Ananth Nag’s Naa Ninna Bidalaare was probably the first Sandalwood film, which had a lasting impression on Kannadigas in supernatural-horror genre. Since then, many films have been made in this genre and have disappeared without any trace from people’s memory. Now, Upendra’s Kalpana, which is a remake of Telugu movie Kanchana (Muni in Tamil), is the latest film in this genre. Let us see what it has to offer... The first half of Kalpana is full of comedy and chilling moments. The scenes involving Umashri and Shruti are entertaining but at parts, it cross the limit, as they appear overacting. In the second half, the story gets engaging with a flashback of Sai Kumar, making the movie a serious affair. The flow of the story keeps the audience to watch the movie on the edge of their seats. Technically, the background score by V Harikrishna is excellent and two songs are good. KS Selvaraj’s cinematography has to be praised. Director Rama Narayan succeeds in making the audience to sit till the end. The drawback of the movie are: There are quite a few loopholes in the screenplay, which drags the story in the first half, and the movie is much like a revenge story in the second half than a horror film.

Snehitaru Snehitaru is a multi-starrer film, which features Srujan Lokesh, Ravishankar Gowda, Tarun Chandra and Vijay Raghavendra in the lead roles. Challenging Star Darshan and Nikita have done guest appearances in the Kannada movie directed by K Rama Narayan. The movie is nothing but a fun ride. From the word go, Snehitaru will treat you with their funny acts. Love orphans and upheld humanism are the messages of the movie. In other words, the film tells what happens if you are not concerned about orphans. A rich kid Master Snehith’s trouble-creating attitude is a big headache for his grandparents. As his teachers fail to control his tantrums, his grandparents are forced to look out for other options. Hence, his cop brother played by Darshan, an encounter specialist, recruits a caretaker cum teacher Anjali (Pranitha), as he is being

Sandalwood sent to a different place on a special assignment. When it comes to performance, Darshan star power works big time. Be it his introductory scene or the climax, he gets the maximum applause for his electrifying presence. The movie appears like a first step of Master Snehith towards acting career and he is decent in his debut attempt. Nikita is good in her special song, Srujan Lokesh, Ravishankar Gowda, Tarun Chandra, and Vijay Raghavendra have played their parts well. Pranitha is charming and others like Nagraj Urs, Ramesh Bhat, Girija Lokesh, Bullet Prakash and Sadhu Kokila have done justice to their roles. V Harikrishna’s two songs are good. Sonu Nigam crooned ‘Badapaayi hrudaya...’ is our pick. MR Seenu’s cinematography is appreciable.

On the whole, Snehitaru is a fun ride.

Jawan of Vellimala Jawan of Vellimala, which being touted as one of Mammootty’s biggest hits. The film stars Mammootty, Sreenivasan, Asif Ali and Mamta Mohandas. Directed by debutant Anoop Kannan, the plot of Jawan of Vellimala revolves around Vellimala Dam. Mamootty plays the role of Gopikrishnan, an ex-military, who has dedicated his life to look after the dam. Koshy Ommen (Asif Ali) comes to Vellimala to find a way out to the monetary problems created by his father, who undertook the contract connected with the dam project. The death of his father made him bankrupt and he wanted to get his money back. But the payment of the Bill was being withheld by Varghese (Sreenivasan), a candid and honest Engineer, alleging irregularities in the project. Hence Koshy Ommen has to stay back at the dam site as it was a difficult task to get the bill passed by Varghese, who cannot be easily convinced or tempted.

Mammootty as expected was outstanding. Mamta Mohandas, Sreenivasan and Asif Ali have done a commendable job. Baburaj is good, but tends to over act at times.

MOVIE REVIEW

Mollywood Kaithapram are melodious. The second half gets a bit monotonous as you are not sure where the film is heading. Puthiya Theerangal is set against the backdrop of a sea and is focused on the life of a young girl named Thamara (Namitha Pramod) who is an orphan and lives on her own at the shore. She meets an old man (Nedumudi Venu) and begins to see her father in him. What happens next? How does her simple life unfold? Watch Puthiya Theerangal to know. Nedumudi Venu as expected is flawless and enacts his role with utmost conviction. He is a delight to watch. Namitha Pramod is a pleasure to watch. The girl has immense potential and she did extremely well under the direction of Sathyan Anthikkad. KPAC Lalitha and Mallika enact their role very well. Innocent as usual is funny and lovable.

Though a movie that has a few bad moments, few long minutes and dull scenes; Aiyaa is an good entertainer for the folk and a treat to fans of Rani.

Several movies with the same cliched storyline but different movies have plagued the Bollywood but a few movies have been trying to make it out of the eclipse. Aiyaa is a different kind of entertainer that is not completely cliched but is also not the routine story you see. Love at first sight with a good twist, but convoluted and inarticulate at times. Stereotypes an cliches are everywhere but the mindless comedy with a decent distance from being idiotic has worked for Aiyaa. This puts this above the romantic comedy genre that we generally get to see in the movies of today. The movie however is lacking in the fluent flow of a movie as if several

different pieces are sewn together; the stitches being obvious even to the untrained eyes. Prithviraj is not only handsome but also a treat to watch with his well developed character. However, the movie c o u l d h ave been

English Vinglish Tired of the commonplace and extremely predictable love stories (hero loves girl, some fights, girl loves back, trouble with family, some fights, family loves guy, happy ending) I decided to try a movie that is out of the box, with a good protagonist and this was my choice. A good choice. If you want to have some comedy that is not utter nonsense, and a little sentiment that you could relate with if you are a housewife of the typical 90s this movie is for you. The refined movie style made me laugh, feel sad and clap at the end. “May I?” English Vinglish, led by Sri Devi alone, doesn’t go beyond the reality. Though Sri Devi is the finest actress in the industry, I could not help but worry initially about the movie going over-the-top. Indian learning English in a movie and the end that you picture in your mind would be a glib speaker. G a u r i

No, I am not doing it There are reports again that Nayanthara is likely to essay Vidya Balan’s role in the critically and commercially acclaimed The Dirty Picture. It was recently reported that the actress asked producer Ekta Kapoor for a whopping 2.5 crore to essay the role to which the producer is said to have even agreed. When Chennai Times got in touch with Nayanthara to confirm whether she had indeed signed on the Tamil-Telugu remake of this film, which is loosely based on Silk Smitha’s life story, for this whopping amount, she said, “No, I am not doing it.” Guess this puts to rest all those stories.

Nayanthara will dub her own voice in her upcoming bilingual Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum(KVJ). Perhaps this is the first time Nayantara has taken such an initiative to dub for a Telugu film, which is directed by Krish (Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi). It’s been buzzed that Krish has asked Nayan to contemplate dubbing her voice for this film and the sexy siren obliged it. Remember, Taapsee went on to dub for two of her films “Mr Pefect” and “Mogudu” and Mumbai girl Tamannaah did it for “100% Love” and now hear Nayanatara will dub her own voice for Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. well-received in all parts of the state including Telangana region. Reason being so simple—the film portrays the national integration and unity in diversity. Who doesn’t like national integration message? That’s the reason the film got thumbs up on day one.

Things, however, took a drastic change on day two when some of the students allegedly attacked a famous theatre in Hyderabad and burnt the reels on a university campus in Hyderabad under the allegations that the film was an aim to target and hurt sentiments of Telangana people. These students were purportedly and allegedly misled by miscreants. Who are the miscreants? Obviously those who try to come to power by hook or by crook. At a point of time when Telangana movement is still in its peak, anything slight on Telangana or against Telangana would undoubtedly excite and incite people since emotions run high. This point seems to have turned fruitful to some of politicians and those with ulterior motives. And ‘Operation CMGR’ was apparently launched. A series of incidents took place simultaneously. At first director of CMGR,Puri Jagannadh’s office was attacked. Later, screening of Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu was stalled in Hyderabad and in other parts of the state with muscle power, then entered political power and finally the reel power as Telangana Film Chamber announced the film would be stalled until director censors certain scenes. A couple of scenes were muted and CMGR is now finally playing in theatres in Telangana.

Did CMGR really take on Telangana? There was no scene in the movie, which contained Telangana movement. So, the scope for taking on T also didn’t arise. However, director’s mere ideas and fiction took the form of CMGR. He said he wanted to give a good message to the society. Grapevine Lakshmi Manchu on ‘A Woman in Brahmanism’ A Woman in Brahmanism, an erotic movie based on Chalam’s novel, is drawing criticism from many sections of the society. Even advocates are taking on this movie on online forums and micro-blogging websites. A few people went ahead and even complained to the chief minister on this movie and urged that the movie be stopped from being released. Can people jump to conclusions without even watching a film is the question, which has been bothering many people. Mahesh Should do A Message Entertainer

Many well wishers of mahesh babu are hoping he should also do a message oriented movie like the above heroes. As of now, he hasn’t come out of commercial format. Chaitu Moving Away from Nag Young hero naga chaitanya will soon move away from his dad Nagarjuna’s house. Shruthi Hassan... a clever heroine... After almost four years of being a Heroine, Sruthi Hassan got her first commercial success with Power Star’s ‘Gabbar Singh’ this year. But, unlike many other heroines, who increase their pay to sky with one success, Sruthi still remains to be fair enough with her pay. the actress is not demanding 40-50 lakhs per film… even in T-Town, Shruthi is in no hurry to do films continuously. the actress has only singed ‘Balupu’ with Ravi Teja. But, the reason for Shruthi being not so keen on working in T–Town films, might be her interest for Bollywood. The actress has agreed two projects over there, one of them being Prahbu Deva’s directorial. But, for a star hero, who want to cast a known and successful heroine opposite him, instead of waiting for busy bees like Samantha, Kajal and Tamanna, Sruthi is definitely a fair option. AIYYAA Rani Mukerji’s item number in Aiyyaa looks freakishly similar to Vidya Balan’s iconic track from The Dirty Picture

Ever since the release of No One Killed Jessica, rumour mongers have been murmuring about a rivalry between Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan. Although the two are cordial to each other in public, insiders say that Rani has been upset because Vidya ran away with all the accolades after the movie hit the screens! It was also reported that Rani was heard cursing Vidya at a film party when a DJ played the popular number Ooh la la from Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture. It looks like Rani has finally got the chance to take a dig at Vidya, and she seems to be making the most of it. The item number from Rani’s latest film Aiyyaa, Dreamum Wakeupum strongly resembles Vidya’s item song Ooh la la from The Dirty Picture. And we spotted a number of similarities between the two songs too, especially the dance steps, the garish costumes and the funny South Indian vibe. The exception being that in Ooh la la, Naseeruddin Shah sported a paunch, while in Dreamum wakeupum Prithviraj displays a rocking six pack! Dreamum wakeupum is funny and cheeky with words like thighsum thunderum and pumping thrown at you. Rani’s antics are super hilarious, though some steps could come across as a little vulgar. But who cares! It’s all in good fun! Anyway, we wonder if this track will manage to catch the fancy of the nation like the way Ooh la la did.

He is said to be one such director who would show humans changing into anything else without any awkwardness, from then it was said that there is no other director till date who could mesmerize public with their performance. However there are some people with an entirely different opinion that there is some resemblance between Rajamouli and Vittalacharya and that both of them are great directors. Vittalacharya also would convert male actors or any other members in the movie into various animals at time, something similar to this even Rajamouli has done something very recently by changing hero Nani into Eega and making him the hero for rest of the movie.

The film has been appreciated by the Bollywood A-listers and Rajamouli said he expected positive review right from its inception. “We make a film because we think it is good and people will respond positively but we don’t know to what extent. His father, totally disapproving of his creative exploits and attitude used to reprove and punish him even. Vittalacharya, who couldn’t accept his father’s reproof ran away from home and joined a touring talkies. Back then, the touring talkies would camp at various places and run

movie shows. Fortunately for him, Vittalacharya got introduced to the then famous director Shantaram. He learned the art of film making from this noted veteran director who taught him the intricacies of the art. Vittalacharya, together with his friends, produced seven films. He started his own film production company Vittal Productions in 1951. Grand sets, opulent costumes, jewelry and special effects of ‘Mayajaal’ became part of his movies. Leading stars like N. T. Rama Rao, Kanthaa Rao, Rajanana, Ranga Rao, Prabhakar Reddy, Satyanarayana, Rajkumar, Jayalalitha, Devika, Krishnakumari, K. R. Vijaya, Saroja Devi, Anjali Devi, Jothilakshmi, Jayamalini, etc. all came forward with great interest to work in his movies. He would dub his Telugu movies in Tamil and Kannada languages. ‘Kanyadhana’, ‘Padaala Bairavi’, ‘Jeya Vijaya’, ‘Varalakshmi Vratham’, ‘Madanakamaraja Kathaa’, ‘Veerakesari’, ‘Akki Piduku’, ‘Akki

Paratta’, ‘Kanthi Kota Rahasyam’, ‘Akki Veerudu’, ‘Veera Thilakam’, ‘Maaya Mothiram’, ‘Manthira Kumaran’, ‘Jeganmohini’, ‘Gandarva Kanni’, ‘Nava Mohini’ and ‘Mohini Sabhadam’ were some of his films that were booming box-office hits. Though he was a big shot in the Telugu film industry, he continued to live in Chennai. His house was on Gangadeeswara Koil Street at Purasawalkam. I had met him at his residence on a few occasions. Whenever I photographed him he would insist that no flash should be used as it would affect his eyes.

Aonjourney into Vitalacharya’s screen wonders and

his work off screen

“ I produced films only with the aim of entertaining people and making money. How can I expect awards for my films?!” - Vittalacharya

Q: What is the reason for your deep interest in stories with ‘mantra, tantra’ base? A: I am immensely interested in these type of stories. Otherwise, I’ve not seen spirits or a real sorcerer in my life. Everything was only my imagination. I’ve staunch faith in the ‘mantras’ and their benefits as contained in the Vedas. Based on these, my imagination would take wings. I saw that all my movies had three factors without fail - a royal family, occult matters and faith in God. Q: Which films had impressed you very much? A: Maya Bazaar’, ‘Kanavanae Kannkanda Deivam’, ‘Deivam’ and films of A. P. Nagarajan, B. R. Panthulu and Modern Theatres had stunned me. Q: You had not produced any straight Tamil movie … A: ‘Penn Kulathin Pon Vilakku’ in which Gemini Ganesan and M. N. Rajam did the lead roles was my only Tamil movie. The film was released on 10-7-1959. After this movie, I only dubbed my Telugu and

Kannada movies in Tamil and I was totally successful in that attempt. Whenever Chinnappa Devar and I met, we would discuss only about animals, their behavior and maintenance. While mingling with animals rather than humans, we would feel very joyous and mentally peaceful. Q: Tell us about your family … A: My wife’s name is Jayalakshmi. We’ve four sons and four daughters. My eldest son Srinivasan directed ‘Pennai Nampungal’, ‘Thaipasam’ and ‘Aval oru adhisayam’ in Tamil and another four movies in Telugu. He produced ‘Jai Vedalam’ and directed it too. The movie was the second 3D movie at the national level. My second son Padmanabhan is distributing my old films. The other children have settled down in America, Mangalore and Hyderabad.

Vittalacharya had directed more than hundred films, who had created a niche for himself in the industry died on 28-5-1999 at his 79th year. At death-bed, he called out for all his children and grandchildren and told them that he had lived a fully gratifying life and that he would die with that happiness in mind. He asked his family members to sing his

favorite bhajans and he breathed his last with a peaceful smile on his lips. It would be an honor to this veteran and noted filmmaker if the Tamil Nadu government or the Government of Andhra Pradesh institutes an award in his name and distributes it to the best ‘Mayajaal’ movie of the year.

Q: Have you received any awards for your films? A: I produced films only with the aim of entertaining people and making money. How can I expect awards for my films?!

S

amantha's film with her mentor Gautham Vasudev Menon is a trilingual, which in a way will mark her entry into B-town.

The film, which is a love story, has Samantha paired opposite Aditya Roy Kapur. “The film has us transition from ages 15-25,” says Samantha, adding that she is not really looking at the film as her launch into B-town. “Gautham sir offered the role to me, and as he was making it in three languages, he wanted the same heroine in Hindi as well. I agreed to do it. I value his judgement and what he says holds good for me. He is my mentor,” she says. Rumour has it that Samantha was the original choice for Ekk Deewana Tha. Is she relieved that she didn't do it, given that it bombed at the BO? “Why should I be? I was never offered Ekk Deewana Tha,” she asserts. And though she is excited about doing a film with Mani Ratnam, the actor remains tight-lipped about the project. “It is strictly confidential and I can't reveal anything about it right now,” says Samantha. The year ahead is crammed with work schedules for the actor. “It's going to be a busy year ahead as I will probably have eight releases. I have put in a lot of hard work,” she says. So how does she feel about being one of the most sought after actors in the south and Samantha says, “I believe that every Friday our fate changes at the box office, so I really don't put much thought to this and I don't care about tags.”

Sizzling Love Affair

Rekha & Amitabh’s

Why should the public know of my love for him or his love for me?

The cloak of silence that Big B has put over his alleged ‘love affair’ with Rekha is perhaps what gives their relationship an enigma. Going back to Rekha’s famous interview with Filmfare magazine in 1984, we get an understanding behind what could have been the reasons for this denial. Here’re excerpts from that interview. Candidly talking about Amitabh’s denial of their affair, Rekha said, “Why should he have not done it? He did it to protect his image, his family, his children. I think it is beautiful. I don’t care what the public thinks of it. Why should the public know of my love for him or his love for me?

This love story has remained an enigma for many. Though the rumour mills were abuzz with reports of Rekha and much-married Amitabh Bachcan’s sizzling love affair, the couple never admitted it publicly. This love story, however forbidden, is much celebrated. NOVEMBER 2012 | WWW.CINESPRINT.COM

Sizzling Love Affair

She still speaks longingly and lovingly of ‘him’, while he has never said that they were more than co-stars and acquaintances. 96 NOVEMBER 2012 | WWW.CINESPRINT.COM

The two acted together and the reel-life chemistry they shared was stunning. And most people believe that bond was strong in real life, too. But did they ever share a love that could have shaken his marriage? We are still wondering about that one. It is not that there were no signs of ‘pyaar-vyaar’ between Rekha and Amitabh. It was rumoured to have begun on the sets of Do Anjaane, the film that debuted Rekha’s transformation from raw and fat South Indian starlet to polished and gorgeous B-town star and showed that Bachchan could indeed bring in the audiences. And success was a given after that, with Khoon Pasina, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ram Balram and Mr. Natwarlal, to name just a few. Many had already suspected that the couple was spending more time alone, away from the sets, with regular trysts off the sets, though no one who really knew all the facts has ever talked about it. The relationship, and the reactions to it from AB’s wife Jaya, were evocatively caught on celluloid in Silsila (1981), their last film together. It is said that Rekha realized that there was no future in it, since Jaya would not let Amitabh go, and she would always be the ‘other woman’, a story that her own mother’s life had already lived. The story goes that Rekha, inspired by the Hema Malini-Dharmendra love story and that “marriage” between the two, started flaunting gifts from Amitabh and turned up at a Bollywood wedding complete with sindoor and rings from her lover. Jaya is said to have asked her over to dinner one evening and made it very clear that she would never leave her husband, no matter what. Today, it is all very civilized and friendly, but who knows what could be simmering under that calm façade! We think love will always find a way, as the song goes, but whose love for whom and what way, we have no clue. We can only sigh and sing ye kahaan aa gaye hum and wonder, ‘yeh kahaan jaa raha hai?’

It’s one thing when the script calls for a changed appearance in terms of dress, hairstyle and makeup. It’s a whole other thing when life guides the decision. There are some who have lost oodles of weight and others who have added some! Some grew their hair longer, some chopped it off! Some have hardly changed over the years, with or without the assistance of plastic surgery. Some have aged gracefully, growing more mature with passing years, yet others have grown younger! THE IMMORTAL

LOVE STORY “Devdas” has been a favourite with Indian filmmakers since the 1920s. The novel by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, written circa 1917, has had an immense impact not only on Indian cinema but also on the psyche of the lovelorn Indian male! 106 NOVEMBER 2012 | WWW.CINESPRINT.COM

The story is all about a feudal lord’s son Devdas falling in love with a poor girl Parvathi. Due to differences in social and economic status, the weak-willed youth cannot marry his childhood playmate and sweetheart, and Parvathi marries an old man. However, unable to forget her, he takes to the bottle. A golden-hearted prostitute Chandramukhi befriends him and tries to make him forget his past. But soon he rushes to meet Parvathi in vain. Heartbroken, he dies in front of her house.

Devadasu was one of the most memorable films for Telugu people. The songs in this film are popular even today. ‘Jagame Maayaa’, ‘Palleku Podam .. Paarunu Chuddaam Chalo Chalo’, ‘Kudi Edamaithe’ are the few unforgettable song of Devadasu. Major credit goes to Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, the singer and C. R. Subburaman, the music director. It is said that singer Ghantasala had observed a fast for 41 days in order to get the right effects to represent a grief-stricken Devadasu while singing the song ‘Jagame Maaya Brathuke Maaya’.

The tragic love story of Devdas has been adapted to the screen several times in many languages, and the 1953 version in Tamil and Telugu was not only a major hit but also considered by many critics as the best. The credit for such high praise should go to the hero Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the bilingual superstar. His performance as the ill-fated lover

was so classic that even today if one mentions Devadas, ANR’s image comes to mind instantly. Savithri as his heartthrob lent him excellent support, and Lalitha played the vamp Chandramukhi. Besides impressive performances, the music (C. R. Subbaraman, lyrics K. D. Santhanam, Udumalai Narayana Kavi) contributed to the success with many songs becoming

hits. Sadly CRS (one of the producers) passed away during the making of the film, and some of the songs written but not composed by him were done by his assistants Viswanathan-Ramamurthi. The hit song, `wulagey maayam, vaazhvey maayam,’, was composed by this talented duo. Brilliant photography (B. S. Ranga) and interesting onscreen narration by choreographer- filmmaker Raghavaiah also contributed to the success. Remembered for the empathetically brilliant performance of Nageswara Rao in the title role and equally impressive acting by Savithri. And for the tuneful music and songs.

(JULY 21 - AUG 20)

You aren’t one to hang around in the shadows. You don’t wallow in things that slow down the spirit. You are able to see things for what they are. You may find yourself in situations where you see things before they happen. Tonight the moon has you being a master juggler in love. Rating 6.5

PISCES

(JULY 21 - AUG 20)

You are so light that the laws of gravity don’t apply to you. Nor do the laws of the sea. If you were a rock, you’d be pomice stone. You float thanks to the air that flows through your pores. Even when the wave tries to take you under. Tonight you are sparkling as you ride the waves taking you out to the open sea. Rating 7.5

You know how to swim in water. You can also slither through water. You adapt outside of water and don’t let anybody catch you. The moon is no longer making you too excitable or dazed. And you change color. Your face has that sweet, dreamy look of someone who has shown up late and has to ask for forgiveness. You are wonderfully chameleonlike. Rating 6
