An exercise app for the over 50s

“We’re living longer but in poorer health, warns thinktank” Headline from a recent article published in The Guardian

Life expectancy is increasing

But not a healthy life expectancy

We owed it to ourselves to live a healthy life, but more importantly to our loved ones, as they will likely be the ones paying our health bills, when we can no longer work.

The problem statement "Did you know that only one in 10 Australians over the age of 50 exercise enough to gain any cardiovascular benefit?"

User interviews I interviewed six people, ages 50 and over and documented the findings.

"I need to lose weight and be fitter to cope better with daily activities"

"My biggest fear is hurting myself e.g. hips, knees."

"I hate going to the gym!"

"I need to maintain or lose weight and be aerobically fitter, so I can play more golf"

Things I heard These were the responses I received.

Synthesizing data Based on the responses I applied the affinity mapping method to find common problems and focus on them.

Competitor analysis I researched my competition to find their strengths and weaknesses in order to differentiate from them.

Key findings from competitor analysis: ÎÎ Many apps need to be paid for ÎÎ Too many ads on free apps ÎÎ Many don’t use models that represent the target audience ÎÎ Generally a poor experience, as things don’t do what they are expected to

Personality

Elizabeth is a Charity Events Coordinator. She frequently deals with older people in her line of work. She is very aware of the impacts on her health and quality of life, if she doesn’t exercise.

She considers herself to be quite tech savvy for a 55 year old.

She reads everything and anything, via social media, especially articles or feeds about the latest research on health and exercise, hoping to find short cuts to exercising. In the past she has tried various exercise regimes, including walking for a charity with a buddy, used a personal trainer, yoga and pilates. Her parents are fit and healthy. Her children are all grown up and her husband supports her. So, there is no reason why can’t achieve her goals if she sets her mind to it. Her biggest fear is injuring herself while doing exercise or physical activities.

IA development I conducted card sorting with 2 groups to ensure my content and placement align with my users.

Key findings from card sorting: ÎÎ Both groups were able to distinguish clearly between the exercise category and exercise type. ÎÎ The group that most aligned with my own grouping was one that had a participant who is familiar with exercises and workouts. ÎÎ Both groups were able to distinguish between exercises versus menu functions, but not their subgroups I decided not to revise my original sitemap, as I didn't see enough evidence to do so.

The participants only capture "surface" characteristics. They don't know what the content is about or how they would use it to complete a task. Also they were only given a short time.
