Dear CSC Family, We did it! And by WE, please know you are an important part of that group. With your support, we built the theater of our dreams AND produced a fantastic debut season in this inspiring space.

In so many ways, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company fulfilled its mission “to bring Shakespeare and the Classics to life for audiences of all ages” like never before. We took artistic risks, motivated young audiences to develop empathy and tolerance, engaged in hard conversations around pressing social issues, and hopefully, helped bring light to our corner of 12th and Elm. Everything is new! Not only did we cut the ribbon on a beautiful performance space, but we filled it with new faces and friends! During the 2017-18 season, subscription and single ticket sales increased by 60 percent, and we welcomed patrons from 42 states and 5 countries. 40 percent of our ticket buyers were from the Greater Cincinnati area, but they were brand new to our Shakespeare family.

Everything is bold! CSC continued to set the standard for innovative, professional theatre. We were honored to receive several awards in the past year including: • the Emerging Business Award from LEAD Cincinnati

Completing the Classical Arts Corridor The Grand Opening of The Otto. M Budig Theater On the night of September 8, 2017, a packed house filled the pristine seats of the brand new Otto M. Budig Theater to witness its very first production. Lights dimmed and a quiet murmur of anticipation grew into a deafening roar. The opening of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a historic moment for the Company, its myriad supporters, the OTR neighborhood, and the city of Cincinnati.

The only professional classical theatre company between Chicago and New Jersey, CSC’s new stateof-the-art facility represented a step-change in the organization, the local community, and the region.

Covered in every local publication, the grand opening garnered national and international attention from publications like American Theatre and Quarto 4

magazines, with Lonely Planet and The New York Times specifically calling out Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in its new home, a major contributor in distinguishing the region for its arts.

Unique, Immersive, and Intimate: An experience not found anywhere else in Cincinnati With seating on three sides, no seat farther than 20 feet from the stage, space to play in the aisles, upper gallery, behind, and above the audience, seeing a show inside the new theater is, by design, an engaging and distinctive experience. Patrons agreed – 84% said they felt actively immersed and engaged after seeing a production at CSC.

Season Highlights A Midsummer Night’s Dream Soars to New Heights The new theater’s inaugural production was symbolic in many ways: the first image audiences saw upon entering the theater was a small bare lightbulb in the middle of an empty stage – a “ghostlight” – an echo of the last image of the final production on Race Street.

“It was a very symbolic choice,” says Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips. “We wanted people to know that we were the same company as we’ve always been, and our new space is merely an expansion of the work we’ve already been doing.”

From the opening production on, the Company delivered.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream included the largest set the company has ever produced, a four-piece live rock band, and fairies who descended from the catwalks and flitted in circles above the audience.

Dracula Sets New Record for Single Ticket Sales Following on the heels of the opening production was Steven Dietz’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which brought together a colorful and macabre cast of characters for a thrill ride of gothic horror. The new theater offered unique staging opportunities throughout – vixens crept from underneath the thrust stage and into the laps of the front row, eliciting screams of surprise and delight. Additionally, the technical capabilities of the space plus the Company’s investment in production values allowed CSC to realize fully Dietz’s vision for the show, including a flying Dracula and over $400 in stage blood used throughout the run.

This audience favorite proved itself worthy once again: Dracula broke the CSC record for highest single ticket sales of any production in the Company’s history, accounting for 22% of the total single ticket revenue for the year.

Othello Provides Unique Collaboration Opportunity CSC’s spring production of Othello featured a fresh, modernized staging by Christopher V. Edwards of Boston’s Actors’ Shakespeare Project and ran concurrently with Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s production of Red Velvet, the story 7

of the first African-American actor ever to play the role of Othello. The connection between the two shows deepened audience engagement with both theaters (the production of Red Velvet was directed by CSC Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips and featured members of the CSC Resident Ensemble), and enhanced the already strong collaborative nature between theaters in Cincinnati. Members of the American Theatre Critics Association attended both shows during their regional conference, hosted at CSC, calling it “a rare chance in Cincinnati to witness Shakespeare like [you’ve] never witnessed it before.”

Noises Off Had Audiences Rolling in the Aisles The closing production of the Debut Season was Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, a hysterical, fast-paced British sex farce about putting on a hysterical, fast-paced British sex farce. The show was directed

by Ed Stern, former Artistic Director of Cincinnati’s Playhouse in the Park, who called the show “the funniest play ever written.”

To accommodate the needs of the show, which included three turntables and a two-sided set, CSC converted the thrust stage into a proscenium configuration.

It made audiences happy: 38 more of them got to see the show each night due to added seats!

Education Program Shakespeare wrote plays, not novels, and plays only come to life through performance. You wouldn’t introduce a student to Beethoven by handing them the sheet music, so why should we introduce a student to Shakespeare by relegating him to the printed page? Plays aren’t meant to be taught like this!

In the past year, the potential within CSC’s Education Program grew due to the higher seating capacity of the new theater as well as the addition of a separate CSC Touring Company. Plus, backstage tours and pre- and postshow workshops alongside live performances of classical plays help round out the student experience.

When schools require students to read Shakespeare in a traditional classroom setting, they learn that history’s greatest playwright is unintelligible, irrelevant, and boring. This creates what we like to call, ShakesFEAR.

Educational Matinées Improve Students’ Comprehension of Shakespeare’s Text

Last season, through CSC’s comprehensive, interactive, customizable, and innovative Education Program, we improved over 25,000 students’ comprehension of Shakespeare, and helped young teens develop essential social and life skills like creativity, collaboration, selfdiscipline, critical thinking, confidence, tolerance, and empathy. For thousands of students, we helped banish ShakesFEAR for good.

Last year, students from all over the tri-state area traveled to Downtown Cincinnati to see morning matinées of CSC’s Mainstage shows, which had a direct impact on their comprehension of Shakespeare’s text. Before seeing a student matinée, only 5% of students said they completely understood the play and 29% didn’t understand any at all. After seeing the show, 96% said they understood all or most of the play.

Why is this important?

“At the very end of our contract, we had the pleasure of giving our final performance of Romeo and Juliet to Turpin High School, my alma mater.

While Turpin is not low income, its arts budget has always been very low, and thanks to CSC and its supporters, we were able to offer the show to Turpin at a huge discount. After the show, I sat on the stage for almost a half an hour chatting with some of the kids. I will never forget the looks of pure fascination on their faces, and the vivacity with which they

Students are tested on Shakespeare, and it is part of the curriculum in most high schools. Understanding Shakespeare helps students become more versed in classical text, poetry, and writing, which helps us all appreciate the human condition.

Following each performance, students had the opportunity to engage with the performers and themes of the show in a postshow Q&A and discussion with the actors. In order to support equitable access for all schools, CSC offered $12 student tickets to these performances (a 61% discount) and allowed teachers and chaperons to attend for free.

The expansion of the educational matinée program gave many lowerincome schools the chance to attend a live Shakespeare performance for the first time!

In-School Tours Brought Arts Experiences to All Neighborhoods Almost every day during the school year, CSC’s six-member touring company could be found at a school somewhere within a three-hour radius of Cincinnati. Our compact productions can fit in almost any space, clock in at just under two hours, and allow CSC to bring quality arts experiences to rural and lower-income areas of the tri-state. This year, CSC partnered with the local arts councils in Springfield and Portsmouth, Ohio to bring Shakespeare to more than 1,300 students.

Summer Camp Expanded from Three Weeks to Nine Weeks For many years, students from all over the tri-state area have flocked to Xavier University for a week of intensive Shakespeare study with some of CSC’s greatest teaching artists. This summer, thanks to the additional space offered by the new theater, CSC’s camps finally moved home.

Additionally, the program itself underwent a radical transformation, more than doubling the number of camps offered, and added several general theatre camps, where students learned skills applicable in all areas of performance, not just Shakespeare.

Campers were given pre- and post-camp surveys to measure improvement in various measures during the week of camp, including social skills.

After Summer Camp, 90% of parents saw improvement in their child’s confidence and 70% saw improvement in their child’s ability to make friends.

Extended Residencies Banish ShakesFEAR In addition to school-time performances, CSC touring company members could also be found in classrooms all across the city, from the School of Creative and Performing Arts in Downtown Cincinnati, to Seven Hills on the east side, to The Oyler School on the west side, and beyond.

The eight-week CSC artist residency programs supported arts integration in the classroom by using theatrical techniques to develop new ways of teaching Shakespeare in the English curriculum.

This year, CSC conducted two 8-week in-school residencies at SCPA. After pre- and postsurveying the students, the program was shown to have a positive impact on their comprehension of the plot (the average class grade when quizzed on the plot increased 84% after 8 weeks), as well as on several measures of empathy, including a 12% drop in agreement with the statement, “I’m not interested in learning about people that are different than me” and a 9% increase in agreement with the statement, “I like to hear views different from my own.”

Acting Classes Encouraged 21st Century Skills and Helped YPs Engage with CSC During the school year, CSC offered a multitude of classes for children and adults alike. In CSC’s flagship Groundlings program, high school actors met every Saturday morning to engage with the Bard’s text. Many Groundlings students have gone on to win Shakespeare competitions at the national level, and a lucky few have worked for CSC, including 201718 Touring Company member, Emily Sullivan, of Wyoming, Ohio.

In addition to Groundlings, CSC also offered Groundlings Junior, a similar program for middle school students, and the brand-new Act One class, offered to elementary students.

CSC also piloted a new offering last season, specially tailored to helping Young Professionals in the community engage with CSC. On Monday nights, community members took classes with CSC company members in a variety of theatrical disciplines. On Masterclass Monday, CSC actors guided classes in topics such as voice, movement, directing, audition techniques, and more.

On Melee Monday, local fight director and longtime CSC fight choreographer Gina CerimeleMechley led part fitness, part stage combat classes, ranging from classic swashbuckling to modern

hand-to-hand combat. And on Maker’s Monday, CSC designers led classes in crafts and theatrical design. Participants left having created their own fairy wings, monster makeup, paper valentines, and more! Over 200 YPs participated in the new program over the course of the season, 22% returning for more than one class.

After participating, 71% felt more invested in and a part of CSC.

PROJECT38 Fostered Empathy Among Students PROJECT38 is CSC’s innovation in arts education!

Over the course of the year, CSC teaching artists worked with 38+ individual schools to co-create multi-disciplinary interpretations of all of Shakespeare’s 38 plays.

The project culminated in a weekend festival this past April when all the students came together to perform, participate 15

Little is expected of them, and in return they get very little exposure to the world beyond the school’s walls. It is important to me, and to our students, to use English and Language Arts to access different parts of culture and society that they might not have access to otherwise.

Our students don’t really have much of a connection to Shakespeare. It is completely alien to them. We didn’t know if they would understand it, or if they would even enjoy or appreciate it. I remember when I was a freshman in high school, I was handed a copy of Romeo & Juliet. I understood that we were entering a rite of passage. Up until that point in time, we were among the uninitiated.

Shakespeare was this daunting challenge. It was like climbing a mountain. Climbing your first mountain doesn’t offer much along the lines of cosmic significance, but when you stand at your first peak, you realize life just isn’t the same anymore. You are now a person who climbed a mountain. You are now a person who has read Shakespeare.

For students in inner-city schools, that is an experience many students are denied. There are “more important” things to be done, or teachers assume that students can’t handle it. As a result, many minority students get the impression that it just really isn’t for them. It is a personal goal of mine, as an inner-city teacher, to tear down those barriers, and make it for them. I want them to be able to climb that mountain, because I don’t want to just teach reading to my students, I want to teach them to climb these types of mountains. That way, when they leave here, they can keep doing it on their own.” ~ David Roy, Teacher at Alliance Academy

The 2018 Festival was the largest in CSC history, with 1,280 students performing and a total of 5,400 attendees.

Participating schools were 79% public, 21% private/parochial/ homeschool. 37% were urban, 44% suburban, and 19% were rural.

In 2018, CSC also put special focus on incorporating more low-income and special needs schools into the project. Four new low-income schools signed on, and CSC also conducted free workshops with the Oyler School, Alliance Academy, and the Campbell Regional Juvenile Detention Center. In 2018, 44% of schools served by CSC were in low-income areas with a majority of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch programs.

At the PROJECT38 Festival, schools performed in blocks so that students and teachers had opportunities to watch each other’s projects. As a result, over half the students developed friendships with kids from other schools.

It was an idyllic evening for everyone- friends and family alike brought blankets, chairs, coolers, and picnic baskets

to witness the Bard’s greatest hits - all at no cost. The park tour brought quality arts experiences to residents of communities outside of the downtown core: 94% of patrons felt their neighborhood was more invigorated after Shakespeare in the Park and 86% had more community pride.

“Insight Talks” Deepened Audience Engagement

Last season, CSC launched Thursday Night Insight Talks: pre-show presentations that provided patrons with the opportunity to engage more deeply with each production. The series featured local university scholars, guest artists, and CSC artistic leadership and ensemble in topics ranging from “Mark Twain in the Queen City” to “Racial & Religious Prejudice in Shakespeare’s England.” Insight Talks enhanced and deepened the patron experiences with specific plays while encouraging personal investment in the Company. As a result of these new talks, 75% of participants said CSC was very important to them personally.

It was also social. It provided opportunities for local parents to forge new connections with others who they might not otherwise have met.

And it was recurring. Playdate was made available on Sunday matinée performances of each show’s run.

After participating, 67% of parents met other CSC patrons with young children and 100% would recommend the program to another parent.

“Playdate” Helped YP Parents Attend Mainstage Productions CSC’s new Playdate program provided artist-led childcare at the theater while young parents took a break to watch a performance.

CSC received a project grant from the ArtsWave Young Professionals Committee to start the program, with the goal of creating a participatory, social, recurring program that would help deepen YPs engagement at CSC. The Playdate program is participatory. The children’s activities related to the specific

Shakespeare Theatre Association Conference STA Annual Conference Brought Companies Worldwide to Cincinnati In January, CSC hosted the Shakespeare Theatre Association Annual Conference.

Representatives from Shakespeare companies all over the world convened in Cincinnati for a weekend of seminars, workshops, and networking. CSC had great success incorporating significant theatrical practitioners including Kelly Hunter and Laura Fisher into the conference lineup, as well as outside the arts professionals from Facebook, P&G, Spektrix, and LPK. 182 delegates from 74 companies attended, representing

31 states and six countries. After the conference, 87% said they would make a return trip to Cincinnati based on their amazing experiences.

In response to the systemic diversity issues many American regional theaters face at the decision making level, CSC placed a heavy emphasis on including multiple sessions that focused on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) to help generate discussion on these topics among the leadership of Shakespeare companies all over the world.

Community Impact A Window into the Arts

With the location of our new facility on a key corner of Overthe-Rhine linking Music Hall, SCPA, and Washington Park, CSC has become a vital part of enhancing the vibrancy of the neighborhood. The walls of CSC’s lobby and rehearsal spaces are glass, intentionally activating the corner of 12th and Elm with a sense of openness, inclusion, and excitement. 87% of patrons think the new theater feels accessible and welcoming to all. The new location also contributes to the economic vitality of the neighborhood: CSC’s 25,000 patrons spent over $1.5MM on dinner, drinks, and parking this season, with 60% of that business happening in OTR, up from only 15% when the theater was on Race Street.

Event Spotlight: National Event Spotlight: Hosting Reading of New Play The New York Times

The presence of CSC in OTR also contributes to the reduction of crime around 12th and Elm. 88% of patrons reported feeling safe coming to and from the theater, and 90% of OTR business owners said the addition of CSC to OTR has had a positive impact on the neighborhood.

The Otto M. Budig Theater includes multiple spaces of an ideal size to host seminars, talks, meetings, and other neighborhood events. Since August, CSC has hosted more than 75 events for neighborhood and community groups.

In April, CSC hosted a reading of Lauren Gunderson’s new play, Natural Shocks, inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as part of a national campaign to end gun violence in America. After a riveting performance by Corinne Mohlenhoff in the one-woman show, representatives from Moms Demand Action spoke to the audience. Moms Demand Action is an activist group devoted to “changing the game and ending the epidemic of gun violence that affects every community.” This group of dedicated moms included Ethel Guttenberg, whose granddaughter was tragically killed in the shooting at Parkland High School earlier this year.

“The area surrounding the theater still has issues with drugs, and the work done by the staff there in conjunction with District One officers has yielded no less than 25 arrests. Aside from directly combating the drug problem, the mere presence of the theater has provided a lift to the surrounding area, serving notice to those wishing to engage in illicit activities that their time to do that in this area has come and gone. All ticket proceeds and additional donations went to Moms Demand Action; all told, the event raised over $4,000 for the organization.

In February, The New York Times published an article on “52 Places to Go in 2018,” recommending travel destinations from around the world. Cincinnati was number 8 on the list, with the article specifically highlighting the renovations of three theaters in OTR, including CSC. The article noted CSC’s new performance space, “Where seats, none more than 20 feet from the stage, guarantee theatrical immersion.”

In May, CSC played host to two journalists from The New York Times, including Jada Yuan as part of her mission to visit each location on The Times’s 52 Places list.

Financial Summary At the close of our Debut Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater, subscription sales and single ticket sales were both up 60%. Student reach and sales from educational matinées also increased thanks to the expanded seating capacity of the new space. In addition, CSC not only eliminated the approved budget deficit of $101,000, but actually posted a surplus due to over-delivery on the single tickets, subscriptions, and contributed income lines.
