IT’S HOMECOMING FOR YOUR PLAYHOUSE!
I’m overjoyed to open our doors to you. This project has been a dream of ours for many years. You can take a look back at the progress we made in our center spread of this program on pages 28 and 29. To every person who has paved the way to get us here, we can’t thank you enough. This is truly your Playhouse.
What better way to celebrate this moment than with one of the most beloved musicals of all time? A Chorus Line, presented by The Singular Sensations in Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre, bursts with artistic passion. When it premiered in 1975, it received emotional responses from audiences, myself included. It is a show that celebrates theatre and the artists who make it. And it has become an anthem to anyone who’s ever pursued a dream of their own. Our fresh take on this classic musical features new choreography by the immensely talented Alex Sanchez, who stays faithful to familiar steps while taking us into the era of contemporary theatre through movement. As this story unfolds, you’ll be wowed by the talent, sincerity and passion of the ensemble.
In the Rosenthal Shelterhouse, another story unfolds that you won’t be able to forget. The Chinese Lady defies the limits of time and traditional storytelling to introduce Afong Moy, thought to be the first Chinese woman to step foot on American soil. She’s thrust into the public eye in 1834, and through Lloyd Suh’s script, she persists through time with a tale that’s as whimsical as it is urgent. Under Jess McLeod’s direction, The Chinese Lady poetically accomplishes what many artists seek to do: reveal new ways to view our world and ourselves.
Both of these shows, I’m sure, will spark engaging conversations. We hope you do so in the gathering space of our new Schueler Lobby, which was built to foster exactly that! What moved you about these stories? What ideas did they generate? We invite you to stay curious about your experiences here and to share your thoughts with friends and neighbors at the Playhouse.
This grand opening season continues with shows that inspire and lift up our shared humanity. Return to the world of the inimitable August Wilson in Seven Guitars. See how the endearing characters of Nathan Alan Davis’ world premiere comedy Origin Story answer the question, “Life… What is it?” And enjoy the world premiere of Shane, a new take on the classic Western by Karen Zacarías that’s grounded in cultural authenticity.
There’s much to be excited about in the months ahead! Thank you for being here with us. Welcome home.
Many thanks,

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples who were affected most by the Doctrine of Discovery* and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand, and on which the city of Cincinnati was built.
*The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.

A CHORUS LINE: THEATRICAL TRIVIA
With show-stopping choreography and an unforgettable ensemble of characters, A Chorus Line is one of the most entertaining and beloved musicals in theatrical history. The production premiered in 1975 and was an immediate hit, earning numerous awards and breaking box office records. Here’s a look at the show’s theatrical legacy.
Michael Bennett — the original director and choreographer — gathered 22 performers in January 1974 to learn about their lives and careers. They met at midnight at an exercise studio, and each person shared their own story throughout the night. Bennett recorded audio of the conversations, and these stories inspired the book, music and lyrics of the show.
Bennett says in the original recording of that meeting, “We came to New York from various places, we’ve been in Broadway shows. I want to tape it because what I want to do is really like an interview. It really is about examining this group of people in this society.”
Donna McKechnie, who performed as the original Cassie, told the BBC in a 2017 article that interviews with chorus dancers were completely unconventional for the time: “If it isn’t quite like any other show, that’s because the way we developed it was so original. And ‘we’ means Michael and the dancers: It was always totally a dancers’ show.”

In 2000, McKechnie performed in the Playhouse’s production of A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler.

The original production went through two, five-week workshops before starting previews. According to A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch, this was unusual for the time period — most shows began with performances out of town to determine whether they would be a hit on Broadway. He credits Bennett and producer Joe Papp as originating the workshop model device, and it’s now commonplace practice.
A Chorus Line premiered off-Broadway in May 1975 at the Public Theater. With immediate praise and immense popularity, the production transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre in July 1975. It enjoyed a 15-year run with a total of 6,137 performances.
A Chorus Line broke the record for number of performances, at the time, in September 1983. Its predecessor was Grease. The evening of A Chorus Line’s 3,389th performance, the production team invited 332 former cast members to perform the finale number on stage together.
Michael Riedel, author of the book Razzle Dazzle which covers Broadway history, has credited A Chorus Line’senormous popularity as helping to save the struggling theatre industry of the 1970s. He told the BBC in 2017, “When it transferred to the Shubert Theatre on Broadway people started to flock back to Times Square. It was the Hamilton of its day. I don’t think any show has ever been so vital to the New York economy.”
The original production was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 1976 and won nine, including “Best Musical,” “Best Direction of a Musical,” “Best Choreography,” “Best Book of a Musical” and “Best Original Score.” In 1984, the show received a special Tony Award. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1976.

AUGUST WILSON’S SEVEN GUITARS

MOE AND JACK’S PLACE – THE ROUSE THEATRE
APRIL 23 – MAY 14, 2023
It’s 1948 in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, and blues music echoes throughout the neighborhood. A group of old friends gathers to mourn and reminisce about Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton — a gifted guitarist whose star was on the rise and whose untimely death has irrevocably changed each of them. With live blues and lyrical dialogue, August Wilson weaves a poetic and poignant composition about the Black American experience. This landmark, Tony Award-winning play — a part of Wilson’s American Century Cycle — promises a soulful exploration of the ties that bind and the chords that hold us together.

WORLD PREMIERE!
In this funny and heartfelt world premiere comedy, Margaret finds herself in a quarter-life crisis while working two jobs to pay down her debt. She wades through banal office triviality at The Services Corporation by day and trudges through the slow-moving graveyard shift at The Burg’s drive-thru by night. Margaret yearns to belong somewhere, and so do the coworkers and customers she interacts with every day. With delightfully unexpected turns and an ensemble of endearing characters, Origin Story is a touching tale about life’s biggest questions and the surprising ways we find the answers.

THE ROAD TO THE GRAND OPENING
Welcome to a new era for your Playhouse in the Park! We’re elated that you’re here with us in the state-of-the-art Mainstage Theatre Complex, featuring Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre. This grand opening is the culmination of yearslong planning to bring together artistic excellence with community gathering. Within this building and throughout our iconic Eden Park setting, every one of us can find their place here.
With humble appreciation, we thank you for helping us pave the road to our grand opening. Let’s take a look at what we’ve achieved together!
2017
• In February, we announced plans to construct a new theatre facility and mainstage that would replace the Marx Theatre (which had been the oldest unrenovated mainstage regional theatre in the U.S. until its demolition in 2022).
2018
• A significant gift from the Rosenthal Family Foundation in October enabled the Playhouse to prepare for renovations of the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. The historic stage, previously called the Thompson Shelterhouse Theatre, was renamed for the Rosenthal Family, who have been longtime supporters of new work at the Playhouse.
2019
• The Playhouse was honored to receive a lead gift of $5 million from longtime supporters Moe and Jack Rouse. Their generosity enabled construction of the facility centerpiece, Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre, which replaced the Marx Theatre.

• The first phase of the capital campaign was the renovation of the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. The project included installation of new seating, new and refinished flooring and carpeting, LED house lighting, reconstructed entryway ramps and upgraded technology to increase accessibility. In September, the newly renovated theatre opened with a production of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace.
• In November, the Cincinnati Park Board and the City of Cincinnati approved final designs for the Mainstage Theatre Complex and signed a 99-year lease.
2020
• Preparatory site work began at our Eden Park location. Between April and August, significant portions of the property’s hillside were carved away for construction crews to work on the backstage areas and rehearsal halls. Construction was completed on a new service drive, a retaining wall and a driveway with improved traffic patterns.
• In May, Playhouse sponsors and arts patrons Digi and Mike Schueler pledged an extraordinary commitment of $3 million to the Playhouse. Their gift included $1.75 million dedicated to the Mainstage Theatre Complex and $1.25 million in mainstage sponsorship of shows in the Marx and Rouse Theatres. The main lobby of the new facility is named in their honor.
2021
• Construction of the Mainstage Theatre Complex officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony in June. This phase of construction focused on building Moe and Jack’s Place –The Rouse Theatre with a new theatre shape and brand-new seating; new rehearsal halls and backstage areas, including larger dressing rooms and a green room for performers; an improved costume shop; and a towering glass lobby with two bars, expanded views of Eden Park and space for community gathering.
2022
• The last show produced in the Marx Theatre, School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, was performed in April and May. During that time, we invited Playhouse patrons, artists, staff, supporters and Board members to “make their mark on the Marx” on the exterior wall prior to demolition.

• The Marx Theatre came down in the summer. Demolition was complete in August.
• To accommodate construction needs, the 2022-23 grand opening season began with performances at partner theatres downtown, in Northern Kentucky and Price Hill.

2023
• In March, we opened our doors to the community, welcoming you back home. We kick off our grand opening in the Rouse Theatre with one of the most beloved and entertaining shows of all time: The Singular Sensations present A Chorus Line

HOW DO WE LOOK?
A snapshot of Afong Moy in Cincinnati.
BY TATIANA GODFREYIt was May 1836. Cincinnati audiences gathered downtown at the Bazaar. Located on 3rd Street and Broadway, where today you can find the I-71 tunnel, the Bazaar was a gaudy establishment. Domes and spires sat on the roof; the inside housed a main hall lined with columns, several saloons, a bar, an exhibition hall and a ballroom. For three days, crowds packed into a large saloon at 8 p.m. to see Afong Moy.
Moy is credited with being the first Chinese woman to visit the U.S. She was brought to the U.S. in 1834 by a pair of New York merchants, the Carnes Brothers, who hoped her presence would boost sales of their imported Chinese decorative goods. She was taken on tour both as an advertisement and as a spectacle in her own right. Traveling throughout the U.S. and to Cuba, she was met with a range of reactions: racialized mockery and derision, pity for being placed on display, objectification and genuine curiosity and engagement.

It was on this tour that Moy visited Cincinnati nearly 200 years ago. From May 10 to 13, she performed walking demonstrations, sang songs in her native Cantonese and conversed with spectators. Admission was $.50, with children at half price. At the end of the week, she left for Pittsburgh.

The advertisement shown here is the only evidence the Cincinnati Historical Society has about Moy’s visit to Cincinnati. Through artifacts like these, historians have constructed a basic outline of her travels in the U.S.: She met Presidents Martin van Buren and Andrew Jackson; she was made to undergo the shameful process of having her feet unbound and displayed in front of an audience; she lived for years in a series of poorhouses during increasing anti-Chinese sentiments of the 1840s; and she performed alongside American icon Tom Thumb at P. T. Barnum’s American Museum. There is, however, much about Moy’s tour and life that we don’t know.

“Traveling throughout the U.S. and to Cuba, she was met with a range of reactions: racialized mockery and derision, pity for being placed on display, objectification and genuine curiosity and engagement.”
“Who is Afong Moy? What can she teach us about China? What can she teach us about ourselves? ”

Those unknowables have become the province of playwright Lloyd Suh, whose play The Chinese Lady places you in a similar position as those Cincinnati audiences crowded into the Bazaar back in 1836: Who is Afong Moy? What can she teach us about China? What can she teach us about ourselves? While 19th-century audiences engaged with a performance of Moy created and marketed by the merchants, contemporary audiences of The Chinese Lady engage with a version of her created by Suh, actor Sami Ma, director Jess McLeod and an expert design team.
We can never truly know who the “real Afong Moy” was. But the similarities (and differences) between 19th-century and contemporary audiences reveal much about the public’s enduring fascination with the “Chinese Lady.” As Moy remarks in the play, “It is a beautiful thing to look at something long enough to really understand it. But it is so much more beautiful to be looked at long enough to be understood.”

HAHNJI JANG (THEY/THEM/ )- COSTUME DESIGNER/CULTURAL CONSULTANT

Hahnji is an activist, costume designer and stylist. They focus on designing costumes that empower characters of the global majority. This includes costuming new plays with Theatre For One’s: Here We Are, a collection of virtual interactive plays by women of color; the tour of No-No Boy with Pan Asian Repertory Theater; The City’s Missing Them 2020 memorial play with The Working Theatre; and the translated English premiere of the Korean play Sister Mok-rahn ( ) at Princeton University. They are on a continual journey to decolonize the closets of the individuals and institutions around them. Hahnji is also available for intersectional and sustainable costuming consultations. Hahnji has collaborated with Broadway Green Alliance and consulted for theatrical and educational institutions such as the National Theatre UK, Women’s Project Theater, The Dalton School and the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy. Their secondhand styling was recently featured by ReFashion Week NYC 2022. Hahnji is currently a staff artist with Soho Repertory Theatre through their Project Number One Artists program.
