FALL FOR ALL

BURLINGTON — The owners and operators of Linnemann Funeral Homes are no strangers to loss and mourning. The business has, after all, been in the family for six generations. But when fire gutted Linnemann’s Burlington location, near the intersection of Ky. 18 and Ky. 237 on Aug.13, the feelings of loss hit close to home for those who operate the business. The experience, they say, was “surreal.” The two-alarm fire brought four fire departments to the brick single-story building and closed Burlington Pike for about three hours.

“I think it’s probably similar to when you experience a loss,” said Marsha Linnemann, who owns the funeral home with her husband, Guy. “You’re in shock. I kind of had a numbness and a peace about it. It was a surreal experience.” While it’s not the same as losing a loved one, John Gay, manager of the Burlington funeral home, said there is “a real sense of loss.” They’ve had “two weeks of mourning,” the pair said from the parking lot of the Burlington funeral home. PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY By Stephanie Salmons ssalmons@nky.com

UNION — Preparations are underway for the city’s annual Fall for All festival. Though festivities aren’t until Saturday, Oct. 19, the city is looking for volunteers, auction donations, crafters and more right now. City events coordinator Karen Franxmansays this is the city’s fifth autumn festival, though it’s only the fourth annual Fall for All. The event expanded last year, but “this is a city event we see growing every year,” she said. » Festivities begin with the city’s second 5K Soldier Run/ Walk, which begins at Union Baptist Church at 8 a.m. Registration is 7-7:45 a.m. The cost for those who register by Oct. 12 is $20 and $25 for registrations after that. Preregistered runners are guaranteed a T-shirt, and all others will receive a shirt while supplies last. Proceeds from the race go to the city of Union’s Adopt-a-Unit program. 6Organizers are also looking for craft vendors for the Fall for All. “We want true, homemade crafters,” said Franxman. Organizers would eventually like

Highland Heights — The crash of falling pins and the roar of applause, punctuated by cheers, fills the dining room at the Campbell County Senior Center. “We cheer for everyone. It doesn’t matter what team you’re on. If you get a strike, we’re going to cheer for you,” said Barb Usleaman of Alexandria. “We just encourage everyone. Your skills really don’t matter, just play and have fun.” Usleaman said she and her late husband started visiting the center and sampling its activities when it opened in 2005. They were among the first to

pick up Wii bowling when the center began the tournaments in 2009. Wellness Coordinator Sarah Manhardt said the league started with three teams and has grown to seven, which cover Campbell, Boone and Kenton counties. Manhardt loves to watch the bowling tournaments. “I just enjoy it. It’s fun to see all the centers get together and interact. It’s fun to see them compete,” she said. “It’s just fun.” Not every member of every team plays each tournament, said Usleaman. They take turns. “I played last time.
