75¢ BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS

Dentist office landscaping sows award By Kelly McBride kmcbride@communitypress.com

A Springdale dentist office has received an award from the Cincinnati Horticultural Society for plantings that set it apart from other businesses. Mark Onady’s practice, at 333 W. Kemper Road, is surrounded by trees, flowers and bushes that offer seasonal blooms for patients to enjoy at the dental clinic. They were planted by Onady’s wife, Kathy, a master gardener who enjoys all things horticulture. The Onady property was nominated by the Springdale Garden Club for consideration in the annual award, which encompasses the entire Greater Cincinnati area. Kathy Onady said she was surprised to win the award. “I just do the landscaping for fun,” she said.

The project started out as a requirement set forth by Springdale, which is a Tree City USA city. Trees of certain width and type were required on the site, and Kathy Onady just kept going. “That was the bare bones look,” she said of the tree and shrub requirement. “There was nothing else there, and I didn’t like the way it looked.” The dental office features large windows in the waiting area, which look out onto the parking lot. So, she added the plantings, including a dry creek bed in a drainage area, and planted flowers and bushes native to the area, such as hydrangeas, and flowering clematis vines. I planted knockout roses, because they’re hearty,” she said. “People are usually nervous, and a lot of time, are in pain,” she said. “It helps patients relax.” Gardening is a love of mine, I just like to do it.”
