BECAUSE COMMUNITY MATTERS
Madeira delays medical marijuana zoning Marika Lee mlee1@communitypress.com
Though the legislation does not go into effect for another week, no medical marijuana related businesses will be opening in Madeira. Madeira approved a 180-day moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries within the city by a vote of 7-0 at its meeting Aug. 22. Ohio House Bill 523 legalized the sale of medical marijuana in Ohio, but the zoning regulations on the dispensaries were left up to municipalities. “That becomes effective on Sept. 8. This ordinance established a moratorium should anyone surface with the desire to locate medical marijuana dispensaries in the city of Madeira,” Law Director Brian Fox said.
Under current city zoning, a marijuana dispensary would be considered retail and could open anywhere Gehring within the business district or on Montgomery Road. As part of the bill, the dispensaries cannot be within 1,000 feet of a school, church, public library, public park or public playground. Councilman Scott Gehring said he asked Fox to draft an ordinance on the issue. “Obviously working in the field of addiction treatment, this is something near and dare to my heart. Given the recent changes it is important for our city to take a proactive approach to making sure if or where these facilities are locat-
ed is appropriate and acceptable location for all of our residents,” Gehring said. He is the president of Sojourner Recovery Services, an alcohol and drug addiction treatment and mental health service provider, in Hamilton, according to his Linkedin profile. Gehring said he wanted to ensure the city had time to review medical marijuana law, which still has multiple unknowns. The ordinance was passed by emergency, meaning it only needed a single reading and will go into effect immediately. “I think it is critical that we get in front of this one,” Gehring said. EVENT PROVIDES OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Forrest Sellers fsellers@communitypress.com
Indian Hill schools are once again helping students with disabilities plan ahead. During the spring, the district presented its first College and Career Night for students with disabilities. Another is being organized for Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Indian Hill High School, 6865 Drake Road. This is a way to prepare students for a post-high school environment, said Kristi Booth, special educaBooth tion coordinator for the district and a coordinator of the event. It is geared toward providing students and their families with resources and information, Booth said. A total of 26 colleges, universities and organizations participated in the college and career night last spring. Booth said the event is for students with disabilities who are seeking post secondary education or employment opportunities. She said this “transition planning” typically begins during a student’s 14th year. A vast amount of resources are available to these students, Booth said, adding that the college and career night helps diSee EVENT, Page 2A

If you walk for exercise at the Kenwood Towne Centre, you can talk with your fellow steppers about how cute your grandkids are and which Hollywood stars are divorcing. Or, you can walk at the mall in Sycamore Township in September with doctors who can talk about the importance of flu shots and discuss hip pain in young people and athletes. From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, Mercy Health physician and Chief Clinical Officer Erin Fries will talk about the former. And from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, Mercy Health physician Sanjeev Bhatia, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine expert who practices in Blue Ash, Montgomery and Oxford, will discuss the latter.
