INDEPENDENCE - Experience life under the big top when Kelly Miller Circus visits Independence May 13-14. “We are one of the last good family events around,” said Dave Williams who does booking for the circus. “The best part of the circus is that you can take a great grandmother and a 2-year-old and there’s nothing here to upset or offend them. You can’t even do that with a movie these days.” Founded in 1938, the circus travels on a fleet of 36 vehicles and the colorful circus big top has a seating capacity of 1,100. Over the years, the Kelly Miller Circus has gathered performers from many nations. This is the second time Kelly Miller Circus, one of the few traditional circuses left in the nation, will visit Independence. This year, they will host four shows under the big top at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday at the Independence Town Center. “We are coming back because we like Independence,” Williams said. “We had a good

day last year and have agreed to expand our performances. We really like the people of Independence. This year’s show will be different than last year’s. We always change the show to keep it fresh.” This year’s show will have a Western theme and feature Lamont, the human volcano who entertains with fire, a rope spinner and a zebra who will perform math problems with the audience. Williams is especially excited about the show’s opening which will feature a motorcycle rider who will travel a wire that stretches from the ground to the top of the tent. See CIRCUS, Page 2A

The Kenton County Fiscal Court has agreed to lease golf operations to Davey Golf. “They bring to the table a management expertise level impossible for the county to offer,” Judge-executive Judge Knochelmann said. “Managing golf courses is not a strength of a government entity. That’s something the private sector does better. We’re letting the pros do what they do best.” Looking into third-party management was one of several recommendations made in the National Golf Foundation’s review presented to Fiscal Court in January. Fiscal Court unanimously approved a $10,000 lease agreement in a special meeting April 8. The lease will last until the end of June. Knochelmann said this gives Davey Golf and the county enough time to finalize a formal lease and management agreement to be put in place July 1. Davey Golf will be in charge of day-to-day operations – managing employees, expenditures and revenues. The organization has plans to conduct training with current staff, bring in 165 new golf carts and an updated fleet of maintenance equipment. Knochelmann said Davey Golf is making over a $1 million investment. Davey Golf, based in Michigan, is a division of The Davey Tree Expert Co.
