Over the years, the Kelly Miller Circus has gathered performers from many nations.

This is the second time Kelly Miller Circus, one of the few traditional circuses left in the nation, will visit Independence.

This year, they will host four shows under the big top at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday at the Independence Town Center.

This year’s show will have a Western theme and feature Lamont, the human volcano who entertains with fire, a rope spinner and a zebra who will perform math problems with the audience. Williams is especially excited about the show’s opening which will feature a motorcycle rider who will travel a wire that stretches from the ground to the top of the tent.

The Kenton County Fiscal Court has agreed to lease golf operations to Davey Golf.

“They bring to the table a management expertise level impossible for the county to offer,” Judge-executive Judge Knochelmann said. “Managing golf courses is not a strength of a government entity. That’s something the private sector does better. We’re letting the pros do what they do best.”

Looking into third-party management was one of several recommendations made in the National Golf Foundation’s review presented to Fiscal Court in January.

Fiscal Court unanimously approved a $10,000 lease agreement in a special meeting April 8. The lease will last until the end of June. Knochelmann said this gives Davey Golf and the county enough time to finalize a formal lease and management agreement to be put in place July 1.

Davey Golf will be in charge of day-to-day operations – managing employees, expenditures and revenues.

The organization has plans to conduct training with current staff, bring in 165 new golf carts and an updated fleet of maintenance equipment. Knochelmann said Davey Golf is making over a $1 million investment.

Former golf course manager Dan Moening was formally fired by Fiscal Court earlier this year.

In November 2015, Moening was fired by County Administrator Joe Shriver after Treasurer Roy Cox discovered and investigated irregularities in the public golf courses’ books. Kenton County Fiscal Court has since filed a lawsuit against Moening.

Wischer, a Beechwood High School graduate, is employed by KW Mechanical in Covington as an operations officer and is a master electrician.

COVINGTON Kenton County Parks & Recreation will facilitate the annual Doe Run Lake & Nature Trail Cleanup as part of the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup 2016 presented by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful. The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. April 23.

Rubber gloves and trash bags will be provided. Wear boots or old shoes and old clothes.

Volunteers will collect and remove everything that should not be found in a county park, including trash, construction debris, automobile and truck tires, old fishing line, and an odd assortment of other objects not usually associated with nature and the outdoors. There will be a restroom available.

There will be a “Most Unusual Find� contest again this year.

One year the find was a bowling ball; another year, it was two halves of an electric guitar.

Rob Sanders to address Rotary Club ERLANGER - The Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 16th Judicial Circuit of Kentucky, Rob Sanders, will be Sanders the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kenton luncheon County’s meeting on Thursday, April 14.

The Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting all felonies in Kenton County, the third most populated county in Kentucky with 160,000 residents. Doe Run cleanup set for April 23

Road closure: Independence Station Road INDEPENDENCE Kenton County Public Works will be closing the section of Independence Station Road between Ky. 17 and Cody Road on Saturday, April 16. Work will begin, weather permitting, at 8 a.m. to replace a 36-inch culvert pipe. Crews hope to have the road open by 8 p.m. that evening.

This closure will affect all through traffic.

Five years later, Kenton embraces smoking ban ban has not made it far in the Kentucky General Assembly. With elections this year and control of the Kentucky House at stake, no lawmakers wanted to stick their necks out politically this year to support a smoking ban, said Heather Wehrheim, chairwoman of Kentucky.

Smoke-Free Last year, Senate Republicans opposed a statewide smoking ban saying it should be left up to local municipalities, she said.

“Last year we thought it was our year,” Wehrheim said. “It was the perfect scenario what we thought, the public support was there. We thought we had the votes.

It was Senate leadership that blocked it. Their argument, and whether it’s true or not, is that it should be left up to local communities to pass smoke-free laws. We know that is going to take years and years and years.”

Walking among bars and restaurants in Covington, it’s hard to find anyone who hates Kenton County’s ban on smoking indoors in most public places.

“I’m a smoker but I’m glad we’re non-smoking,” said Justin Meade, a bartender at Molly Malone’s in Covington. “I don’t want to smell like smoke.”

Five years after it took effect over vocal opposition, Kenton County has embraced the partial indoor smoking ban. It remains the only Northern Kentucky county with any type of indoor smoking ban. Ohio has had a statewide smoking ban for 10 years. Kenton’s ban allows for establishments that don’t serve people under 18, like bars, to have smoking.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department receives few complaints of smoking ban violations, according to a report released by the health department this week. The health department received 59 complaints during the first 18 months in 2011-2012. Since 2012, they’ve received fewer than seven each year.

Only two businesses have ever been levied a fine, both for $200 in 2011.

The number of exempt businesses – typically bars that don’t serve food – has decreased from 78 to 62 since 2012, according to the health department.

“I think what folks should take away from this is comprehensive smoke-free laws are easy to enforce, that most people like them and that they protect everyone,” said Stephanie Vogel, director of population health for the Northern Kentucky Health Department.

The nonchalant acceptance and even enthusiasm from some of the partial smoking ban in Kenton County contrast with the controversy when it was enacted five years ago.

Some bar owners thought it would put them out of business. Patrons lamented what they saw as an attack on their rights.

said the biggest difference is that people don’t smell like smoke leaving the restaurants. Smoking bans encouraged Jay Minihan of Avondale to at least try to quit smoking.

While taking a drag on a cigarette outside a restaurant where he works in MainStrasse, he said he likes being forced outside to smoke.

“I got caught up when I was young,” Minihan said.

“I’m like a classic good ole boy, started smoking cigarettes when I was 12, driving up the street in my dad’s truck to get a beer.

(The ban is) a great thing.

It keeps kids away from bad stuff, and you get to keep your teeth.”

Kenton County’s indoor smoking ban includes any public establishment that allows people under 18. The ban allows restaurants to have smoking in the evenings so long as they don’t have anyone under 18 after a certain time.

Up Over bar in MainStrasse and other bars can still allow smoking. Amy Kummler, owner of Up Over, wouldn’t mind if insmoking were door banned statewide. She feels smoking bans limited to one county or city are unfair.

“I don’t even want to sit in my bar when it’s smoky a lot,” Kummler said. “I would be thrilled if the state went non-smoking,

but I don’t think it would be fair unless everybody did it.”

The Northern Kentucky Medical Reserve Corps provides citizens of both medical and nonmedical backgrounds with a way to help their communities during a public health emergency.

Anyone interested in joining the Medical Reserve Corps is invited to attend an orientation session from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday, April 26, at the Kentucky Northern Department’s Health District Office, 610 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood. A light meal will be provided.

The Northern Kentucky Medical Reserve Corps is a branch of the federal government’s Medical Reserve Corps program, and its goal is to provide a volunteer pool for the Northern Kentucky region that can enhance and support public health agencies and the health care infrastructure during a crisis.

Since the Medical Reserve Corps was created in 2002, the program has grown to more than 200,000 volunteers in

nearly 1,000 units across the country. Northern Kentucky’s MRC unit alone has more than 500 members.

Volunteers would be asked to serve in their own community; but may also choose to volunteer for the Tristate region or for communities in need around Kentucky. Volunteers will be trainings offered throughout the year that will support personal preparedness and basic disaster response skills, as well as developing specialized skills needed for a public health emergency response.

Anyone age 18 or older is eligible, and people with both medical and training non-medical are encouraged to join.

It has been almost two months since the fire at the Rabbit Hash General Store and while the structure is gone, things look bright.

Fundraisers to bring the 185-year-old landmark back to life continue. A

fundraiser at Colonel De’s raised $11,000 and the GoFundMe has reached $60,000.

During the event at Colonel De’s, De Stewart said, “I was completely heartbroken after learning the news from my dear friend Don Clare.�

said people come in every day and donate. “People obviously really care about the Rabbit Hash General Store,� Miller said.

Don Clare, president of the Rabbit Hash Historical Society, and the other members of the historical society have been working hard to take down what is left of the General Store.

Anything deemed salvageable is being cleaned and stored so it can be reused down the road. “We have to come up with like materials or use what we’ve salvaged,�

Clare said. “We’ve saved every piece.�

The burnt pieces of wood from the store and “new� wood from donated barns and houses will be used to rebuild the General Store. But for now, it’s a waiting game for the historical society.

Right now, Clare said they are currently waiting on the architect drawings.

After getting the drawings approved through national, state and local historical societies, they will find contractors to work within the constraints of guidelines set forth by the U. S. Department of the Interior. “We’re as far along in the process as we can be.

Clare said. “It’s a big involved thing. It’s well worth the effort.�

ERLANGER - Drees Homes is planning a new subdivision in Erlanger.

The Enclave at South Ridge, as it will be called, will be located at 3445 Turkey Foot Road, upon council’s approval.

Drees Northern Kentucky Division President Mike Conklin said 28 home sites will be developed on the 14 acres.

There will be a mix of ranch and two-story floor plans offered in the community ranging from 1,500 square feet to to more than 3,000 square feet.

“We have always had a great relationship with the Erlanger community,” Conklin said. “Over the years we have built many very successful neighborhoods in the community.

We believe the location of this community to local health care, shopping, dining, higher education,

transportation corridors, schools, etc., will make this a highly desirable place to live. We have already received great interest in The Enclave at South Ridge.”

Drees plans to start preparing the land for development mid-summer and pre-selling homes in early fall.

Mayor Tyson Hermes said he is looking forward to the proposed development.

“I expect the same quality as some of our other neighborhoods, like Brightleaf and Lakemont, that Drees has developed,” he said. “One of the best parts about it, in my opinion, is that it converts an ‘island’ of unincorporated Kenton County into the city of Erlanger.”

Conklin said Drees always does its best to maintain wooded areas on its properties, but sometimes this cannot be accommodated for many reasons.

“If the area is not on our property then we have no plans to have this removed,” he said. “If it is indeed on the property, unless there is a specific reason for removal we would do everything we can to keep the wooded area intact. Anytime you remove trees from a new development beyond what is needed for the construction of the home you tend to diminish the value of the home site.

Deadline extended for ‘NKY Spring Places’ photos Because of the cold and rainy weather, the Community Recorder has extended the deadline in our “Beautiful Spring Places in Northern Kentucky” project. The new deadline is Monday, April 25.

COVINGTON - A needle exchange program in Covington moved another step closer to reality March 29 after Kenton County Fiscal Court unanimously approved a plan for a mobile unit here.

Members of the nonprofit organization NKY Hates Heroin and others attended the meeting to advocate for heroin help in the region.

It’s not a done deal: The Northern Kentucky Board of Health must approve any plan, and Kenton County and Covington officials included a condition that would require Boone or Campbell counties to join the effort.

Kenton’s plan looks different from the one Covington approved: It no longer contains a condition requiring participants to get tested for HIV and hepatitis C and pregnancy when applicable. An Enquirer story pointed out that public health law could prohibit such a condition, and the policy director of the Harm Reduction Coalition of New York City said that in the 25-year history of needle exchanges in the United States, no programs he knew of had required medical intervention. Instead, the Kenton condition mandates the offer of such testing.

While the vote was unanimous in favor, all three county commissioners said they had a hard time approving needle exchange.

“We have such a serious problem,” said Commissioner Jon Draud. He said that he felt it was important to try needle exchange in part because of the entrenched heroin epidemic that’s affecting so many in the region and that, “all these things” already in place have done little to

help with fighting the scourge.

Judge-executive Kris Knochelmann said he believes the community needs an exchange.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare has agreed to provide space at its Covington hospital grounds for a mobile van, he said. And commissioners in both Kenton County and Covington preferred a mobile van which would spend only three hours a week in Covington. Another condition from Kenton and Covington is to ensure the program is a one-for-one – one used needle for one clean needle – exchange rather than providing needles as needed to IV drug users.

The R.C. Durr Foundation is providing $250,000 toward the needle exchanges in the health department district, which includes Grant, Campbell, Kenton and Boone counties, and the health department plan uses health department staff and testing that’s already in place to help with major cost coverage of exchanges.

The only county and city so far to approve an exchange were Grant County and its city

of Williamstown. That Syringe Access/Exchange Program has been operating at the Williamstown Health Center, which is a Northern Kentucky Health Department facility.

Kenton Fiscal Court also approved exploring the idea of building an addiction treatment center on the Kenton County jail grounds that would be community-wide, with current treatment providers joining to help and costs split among counties and through other funding streams.

The court also approved putting $25,000 toward a heroin helpline that would have experts direct families and addicts to resources within the communities.

The Northern Kentucky Area Development District put out a request for proposals for the line, and Knochelmann said Boone and Campbell counties are willing to consider putting forth $25,000 each toward its operation.

In addition, he said, St. Elizabeth Healthcare has promised to pay for another $75,000 of the helpline costs.

FLORENCE – Boone County High School will be the home for a new event for young creators happening in April.

Northern Kentucky MakerSpace will present the World Maker & Inventor Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 at Boone County High School.

The event is an opportunity to engage students in making and inventing. According to a press release, more than 3,000 students and parents are expected to attend.

There will be presentations and workshops focusing on robotics, 3-D printing, drones, electronics and coding.

The event will kick off with the running of the flameless torch, an Olympic-style relay with student representatives from local high, middle and elementary schools.

More than 70 schools, companies and organizations in Greater Cincinnati will present projects and workshops.

“The Maker & Inventor Expo is a celebration of problem solving, invention, innovation and cutting-edge technology in our world and in education.

WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE? A makerspace is an open community where individuals come together to share resources in a space that fosters creative exploration for the benefit of art, science and culture.

They are places where people can experiment with everything from 3-D printers to a hammer and nails under the philosophy that everyone can learn by having fun.

Makerspaces have sprung up across the nation in recent years, and now Boone County Schools has provided a facility to create Kentucky’s first K-12 makerspace facility open to students and families from across the region.

The event will inspire students, parents, educators and the community with 21st century technology.” said Ryan Expanded Kellinghaus, Learning Opportunities Coordinator for Boone County Schools.

There will be a number of competitions as well.

A 3-D Modeling and Invention Competition is open to K-12 students. Prizes include cash and a Gorilla Maker 3-D printer.

The Outlaw Derby Race and the Sumo-Bot Competitions will showcase student innovation. There is also a Lego sculpture competition.

The Makerspace invites educators, parents, students, homeschoolers and school

COLLEGE CORNER Harden, Ostendorf on WKU’s National Honor Society Tanner Harden, of Villa Hills, and Kristen Ostendorf, of Fort Mitchell, were among 15 students inducted into the Western Kentucky University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at its 2016 spring induction ceremony on March 28 at WKU’s Downing Student Union.

The oldest and largest freshman honor society, students eligible for membership must be full-time freshmen and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in at least one semester, while ranking in the upper 20 percent of their class.

Fightmaster participates in TopPrep at WKU Britney Fightmaster, of Independence, has been participating in Western Kentucky University’s Hilltopper Teacher Preparatory Academy, called TopPrep.

It prepares teacher candidates in areas of special education and elementary education through strong clinical based partnerships and content integration by transforming

teacher preparation programs into clinical models, which prepare teacher candidates to become learner-ready teachers.

During the spring 2016 semester, more than 40 WKU teacher candidates are working in three Bowling Green Independent elementary schools alongside their WKU instructors and elementary school adjunct faculty.

Teacher candidates are able to develop their practice by learning and working in an authentic school environment in which they can focus on critical areas of literacy and special education by selecting, pairing and integrating content courses.

Many students have spoken highly of the program, because of the experience it has allowed them.

“I am no longer sitting in the back of the class, watching a class and their teacher; I am now part of the class and experiencing the career I chose,” Fightmaster said.

On Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, Cappies Critics attended Simon Kenton High School’s production of “Charlotte’s Web.” Below are selected excerpts from several top-ranked student reviews.

“The costumes and the make-up, especially on the animal characters, were absolutely superb. The two pieces of the costumes blended together perfectly and gave the animals a charming, human-like quality. Costume design knew what they were aiming for, and boy did they hit the mark. The set was just as well done. The backdrop of the play tied the whole performance together, pulling the audience into the scene with realistic and creative wooden constructs.” Jake Beckelhimer, Scott High School “Not to be forgotten were the performances of the human cast who tied the story together seamlessly and had realistic, and often hilarious, onstage relationships. Fern, played by Emma Horn, helped establish the sweet and loving disposition that Wilbur carries throughout the show. Edith and Homer Zuckerman, played by Rachel Baker and Kasey Rump, had many comical interludes that bore the signs of a long and mostly happy marriage, and never failed to get a laugh from the audience.” Caroline Lembright, Highlands High School “Reilly Lagemann’s interpretation of the motherly spider, Charlotte, was a calming counterpart compared to the outgoing and boisterous barnyard animals. He brought adorable qualities to the portrayal of a pig. He was entertaining and talented. Smith never broke character as it seemed like he was always eating something, doing a complicated dance move, sleeping or passing out, or climbing on something. Charlotte, the soulful spider, was played by Reilly Lagemann. With little to no movement from the character herself, she still delivered an amazing performance while sitting atop a barn where a spider belongs. Each line was delivered with poise and grace.

Margaret Felix’s beans Margaret Felix says: “I can answer the question about how to cook these beans.”

String beans and break into 1 1/2 to two-inch pieces. Rinse thoroughly and put in pan and cover them with water. Add ham hock or piece of ham and an onion. Bring to boil and simmer until very tender. At this point you can add small new potatoes or cut up potatoes. Cook till potatoes are tender. Add salt and pepper. You can remove ham and pick it apart and add back into beans. The beans will take a couple of hours to get to the very tender stage. Just keep checking them.

Jean Newman’s beans Jean Newman, a North Bend reader, is in her 80s and has been making these for 45 years.

“My husband’s aunt had these beans when we were at her house for dinner when we were first married,” Jean told me. Jean and her husband are celebrating 60 years in June. “My family loves them, and they are with regular green beans but sounded much the same. Maybe Bill would like to try them.”

Well, the response was amazing and equally amazing were Rita the stories connected Heikenfeld with this heirloom recipe. So I’m taking RITA’S KITCHEN creative liberty and devoting the column to half runner beans, those special “country” beans and how to cook them. Bill Kirby, know that people care and want you to enjoy a big ole’ pot of beans!

Greg Marshall’s beans Greg is a Goshen reader. He said: “This is my recipe for “country beans” for Bill Kirby, also from Goshen, Ohio. I use half runners, cooked down with a chunk of salt pork, to make a delicious mess of beans. Recipe adapted from my Grand Mother & Mother, both from Blackey, Kentucky. Enjoy!”

2 - 3 lbs. half runners (regular green beans work, don’t cook as long) 1/4 - 1/3 of a chunk of salt pork (unsliced if you can find it) 1/3 - 1/2 stick of unsalted butter, or margarine About 2 TBL bacon grease Black pepper to taste Enough water to cover about 2 inches (can add 1 can chicken broth with water)

“Break ends of beans and remove strings on both sides of beans & break into desired size pieces. I break some into thirds and some into halves for a good mix. Rinse and put into large pot. Add salt pork, butter, grease, and pepper. Add water, and broth if using, to cover about 2 inches. Cover pot with lid askew and bring to boil on med/high heat. Lower heat to med low and cook till tender, about 1-1/2 hours- occasionally checking to add water if necessary. Remove lid and cook on med high just a bit to evaporate some liquid. Can be cooked ahead and left in pot on stove and reheated when ready to serve. CHECK SEASONING for enough salt and pepper!! Hope you enjoy enjoy a treat from Appalacia!”

Snap beans into small pieces and place in large pot with jowl bacon (discard bacon at end of cooking time). Add salt and cover with cool water.

Bring to bubbling boil, then reduce to low and cover and cook 5 hours.

Check often to see how they are cooking down and if they need more salt. “

Jan Bowling’s beans Jan, a Florence, Ky. reader said: “My husband and his family were from down in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. His mother always grew and canned half runner beans. Here is how she fixed them. Very simple and easy.

They are the best you will ever eat. Yes, they are cooked to death.”

A small piece of jowl bacon scored Approx. 3 lbs of half runner beans, strung and broken in pieces Optional small amount of chopped onion Place all in in a large pot and cover with water.

Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 or 6 hours. You can’t beat the flavor of these beans. Granted, the nutritional content of the beans is probably cooked away, but, they are really good. The jowl bacon is not usually eaten.

Salt when served if necessary. No salt during cooking it tends to make the beans tough. Small new potatoes may be added for the last 20 minutes or so. “Hope this works for Bill Kirby.”

Linda Raker’s beans “We have grown half-runners in our garden every summer for several years. We like to can them so we can enjoy them over the winter. I normally cook a minimum of 2 quarts at a time. I rinse my canned beans well while still in the jars and fill with water to cover beans. I usually buy Hormel salt pork (NOT SLICED). Rinse pork well, and put in bottom of pan, fat side down. Add beans, and 1-2 tablespoons sugar. Cover, and cook slowly until beans are done, and water has cooked down somewhat. Do not add additional water. Half-runners, like soup, taste better the second day!”

How about some truth on local option tax?

Whether someone is lying about an issue, or if they are just misinformed, is always tough to judge. Regardless, when it comes to legislation in Frankfort, it is really difficult to hear people say, or repeat, things you know aren’t true.

At the top of the list for me this week was the line, “Anyone that votes for the Kentucky Local Option Sales Tax is voting to raise your taxes.”

It isn’t true, and it is just one of many issues we need to start talking about.

Not just about the Local Option Sales Tax issue itself, but also about the deceptive tactics used by some to advance their agenda.

Voting for the Local Option Sales Tax legislation, (aka LIFT – Local Investments for Transformation), would not raise anyone’s taxes.

First, the bill in Frankfort is a constitutional amendment, so it would take a vote of the entire commonwealth to change the constitution. Then, local communities around the state would have the ability to raise a local sales tax, if and only if, the majority of citizens in that local community vote for it. So, it would take two additional votes – one statewide and one local – for a tax increase to occur.

Put another way, LIFT gives you the right to vote on a tax increase. See the differ-

ence?

To say that it will raise your taxes is simply untrue.

Now, if they would have said, Brent Cooper “Anyone voting for LIFT COMMUNITY RECORDER GUEST is voting for COLUMNIST something that could potentially lead to a tax increase.” that would be accurate. Personally, I think leaving out “the majority of your fellow citizens have to vote for it” is an important point, but I understand why they might leave it out.

One person in particular, the primary opponent of Adam Koenig, has a post online that simply says “KY Sales Tax Bill” and shows Koenig voting for it. I’ve got a real problem with that ad, and so should you.

The uninformed person might conclude that Koenig voted for a tax increase. He didn’t.

That ad didn’t inform people. Its intent, in my opinion, is to mislead people.

It didn’t mention that the majority of Kentucky representatives in the House recently voted for LIFT on a bipartisan basis. The ad didn’t say that the minority leader in the House, (a Republican),

supported the bill and the Senate President, also a Republican, publicly stated he would vote for it. Mayors from all around the state, including Lexington and Louisville, are for it. Eight former governors, and our current governor, Matt Bevin, have all endorsed it. And to top it off, business leaders at Chambers of Commerce all around the state are in favor of the legislation.

Why would all these people, many very conservative, be in favor of a “KY Sales Tax Bill”?

I can assure you that small business owners and business executives didn’t go to the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and say, “Hey, we’re just not taxed enough. Let’s support a sales tax increase for no good reason!”

The LIFT legislation was debated at length at the Kentucky Chamber, and was eventually supported for the following reasons: » A majority of local citizens have to vote for it. Don’t want it, don’t vote for it. » It can only be used for specific projects. So, limited scope. » Once the project is paid for, the tax goes away.

It is a tool that has been successfully used all around the country, particularly in cities we view as competing with ours.

Now, a minority of folks, on

both sides of the aisle, are against the idea of LIFT for differing reasons.

One argument is that LIFT would give the state an excuse not to fund projects. I understand the concern, but did I miss some windfall of cash coming our way from Frankfort, ever? All this does is give us the ability to better control our own destiny, if the majority of citizens vote for it.

Another argument against LIFT is that sales taxes are regressive and disproportionally hurt the working poor.

Believe me, I appreciate that concern. But the tax is limited to a maximum of 1 percent, and things like groceries, utilities and medicine (essential items) are exempt. Again, it’s up to the local community.

Regardless of arguments for or against LIFT, the point is this: Let’s have an honest debate about the benefits and potential pitfalls of legislation.

I respect those that disagree, and I might change my mind if an argument is compelling.

But deceiving people, either through honest ignorance or deceptive intent, is not the way to win elections or advance our community. Help spread the truth so people can honestly decide for themselves.

Fake IDs have serious consequences Every year there appears to be a rise in the use of fake identification cards by students.

Many teenagers have obtained fake identification cards or driver’s licenses, or used another person’s driver’s license or identification card, in order to purchase alcohol or get into entertainment establishments where they would normally not be permitted.

The fake IDs of course show them to be older than they actually are, usually 21 years or older for alcohol-related activities and 18 years or older to get into some nightspots.

Some parents have indicated to me that some kids feel the possession and use of the fake IDs are not a big deal.

Those parents would like to

know what the possible legal consequences are concerning the fake IDs. Under Kentucky law, it is illegal to Steven J. Franzen knowingly provide false COMMUNITY information in RECORDER GUEST COLUMNIST obtaining a driver’s license or identification card. It is also illegal to possess and/or use a fictitious operator’s license or identification card or to have or use a driver’s license that has been canceled, revoked, suspended or which belongs to another person. It is also illegal to have more than one operator’s li-

cense.

Contrary to what most minors think, violations of the laws mentioned above concerning fake IDs carry very serious penalties, ranging from a Class B Misdemeanor to a Class D Felony. Someone possessing or using a fake ID can be charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument which is a Class D Felony, punishable by up to five years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine. They could also be charged under Kentucky’s Traffic Code for Prohibited Uses of Driver’s Licenses which is a Class B Misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and up to a $250 fine.

Across the United States, an army of trained volunteers – more than 430,000 – gave more than 19 million hours of service last year to care for hospice patients.

Right here in our community, more than 100 trained volunteers work with Hospice of the Bluegrass to serve patients and their families in Boone, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, northern Grant and Kenton counties.

Even when time together may be short, there can be a lot of living to do. Hospice volunteers make more special moments possible every day for the patients they serve.

After jail, let people move on This letter is being sent in support of House Bill 40 which, if it passes the Senate, would allow people with Class D felonies to erase their records. It is understood the bill is sponsored by Rep. Darryl Owens of Louisville. It is also known that Gov. Matt Bevin supports this bill.

The current system creates a class of “untouchables” reminiscent of the class system in India. It is harder for those with convictions to obtain employment, promotions, credit, housing, etc. It is a permanent “hamstringing.” One mistake in youth permanently handicaps a person for the rest of his or her life.

The media promotes the Untouchables” “American caste by referring to “felons” as always the bad guys in what people tend to lump together as “cop shows” on TV. There is a strong social stigmatization forever. This impacts employment and at what level these folks tend to be employed. It is to the commonwealth’s advantage for these people to not only be employed but to be employed at the highest level of which they are capable.

That not only generates taxes but higher level taxes that benefit our government.

A rational approach to this situation is to allow these people to erase the Class D felonies and move on with their lives. Give them a second chance. It’s better for our economy to allow them to obtain and keep employment, housing, credit and all the other normal things. There is no reason, for instance, to deny voting privileges. We want responsible, reliable citizens. By holding people in an “American Untouchables” class system, our government is hurting the whole of our society.

Please support House Bill 40 which, if passed, will benefit the whole state.

A fifth-place finish at the state diving meet is exciting for an eighth-grader. That’s especially true when the top four finishers are seniors.

Scott High School freshman Lindsey Fox entered this season knowing she was the top returning diver in the state. A state title wouldn’t just be handed to her, but she embraced the weight of expectations.

“I knew I had a chance, but I knew there were others who had a chance, too,” said Fox. “The pressure motivated me to work even harder.”

In her fifth state meet – she has qualified each year since she was in fifth grade – Fox reached her goal of winning a state championship. The gold medal led to a mixture of emotions.

“It was really nerve-wracking leading up to it,” said Fox. “To finally actually get to enjoy

it felt great. It was really relieving and really exciting.”

Her score qualified her for AAU Nationals. She will travel to Orlando in July to compete against the nation’s best young divers.

Although she is just a freshman, she is a veteran high school diver. Fox entered the second day of the state tournament with a commanding 15-point lead. She knew she just had to execute and the state title would be hers.

“It’s definitely a lot easier when you’ve been there a couple of times,” she said. “I felt confident, but I knew I still had to have some good dives on the second day.”

The state championship was sweet, but it was made even sweeter by a special guest who made the trip to Louisville.

Nick Fox, a former Scott diver and Lindsey’s older brother, currently dives for Eastern Michigan University. Nick, who helps coach Lindsey in the summer, surprised his younger sis-

ter by driving down from Ypsilanti.

“He always helps me out,” said Lindsey. “It made me feel better (knowing he was there).”

Fox intends to add more difficult dives to her competition arsenal next year. She knows what it takes to work her way to the top. Although she will only be a sophomore, she is a veteran state competitor.

“I’ve been doing pretty difficult dives for a while now,” Fox said. “The most important thing is consistency.”

Unlike last year, the state’s top divers are not graduating.

Fox will be back to defend her title, but the second through fourth place finishers will also return to challenge her. It’s not going to be easy, but Fox is ready to take on the challenge of defending her crown.

“I’m probably going to feel a lot more pressure next year,” she said. “There’s a lot of pressure, but there’s a lot of people supporting me.”

Heading into the spring outdoor season fresh off of a state championship is a boost for the local athletes and teams who earned titles at the KTCCCA Indoor State Championship in Maysville on March 5.

St. Henry’s girls and Bishop Brossart’s boys each claimed team titles in the Class A division, in addition to several individual first-place finishes. In Class AA, Highlands’ Mikayla Reichert won the shot put, besting teammate Mary Claire Redden.

Reichert’s throw qualified her for the New Balance National Indoor meet in New York City. In Class AAA, Simon Kenton led the field, notching four state titles.

“I am very proud of the indoor season that we had. It’s always tough to get out in the cold weather and train,” said St. Henry girls coach Tony Harden. “To end the season with a indoor state championship is always nice for the team.”

Jack Dean-Brown led the Pioneers’ boys, placing first in the 400 meter dash. Meredith Hiles and Michaela Dukes finished 1-2 in the 800, as did Simon Kenton teammates Sophia Delisio and McKenzie Lachmann in the 1,600. The Pioneers also won the girls 4x800 relay.

Dixie Heights also had several top performers, led by Dayana Gutierrez, who placed second in the girls

3,000 and fourth in the 1,600.

Colonels eighth grader Lorali Shworles impressed against varsity competition, placing third in the 800 and the 1,600.

Hannah Cook finished third in the shot put.

The Class A meet was dominated by Northern Kentucky programs. Beechwood had three state champions – Haley Holbrook in the 1,600, Brett Slusher in the 55, and Grant Birindelli in the 800. Aiden Justice nearly joined them, finishing second in the long jump. Dalton Everett placed third in the 55 meter hurdles, while the Tigers relay team placed second in the boys 4x800.

Ludlow’s Amber Victor placed second in the 800 and high jump, and Tiffany Victor placed third in the long jump.

Ludlow’s boys, led by Cameron Van Huss and Kyle Trimpe, won the 4x400 relay. Newport Central Catholic’s Parker Osburg edged out Holy Cross’s Drew McIntosh to win the shot put. Lloyd’s Jamorrow Dawson won the triple jump and the high jump, and finished third behind Brossart’s T.J. Moore and Beechwood’s Justice in the long jump.

Brossart’s boys were led by champions Adam Hartig in the 3,000 and Joey Hickman in the 400.

St. Henry won the boys 4x800 and the girls won both the 4x400 and 4x800. Renee Svec won the 3,000, Kayla Riegler won the 800, and Janelle Tobler won the high jump.

All of this success provided a springboard to the outdoor track and field season.

“I think training for indoor is very beneficial for distance runners and field events,” said Harden. “I think winning indoor is huge for momentum going into outdoor.”

Notre Dame returns eight starters from a team that went 7-10 last year. NDA was third in its district and was runner-up in the district tournament to qualify for the Kentucky state tournament.

The top returners are seniors Christian Kennedy, Laurel Atchison and Emily Jackson, and junior Abby Sammons.

Kennedy, a senior midfielder, was first team all-state last year and will go to Georgetown College. She has several school scoring records.

Atchison, an attacker, will play at Thomas More. Senior midfielder Jackson will play at Transylvania.

Sammons, a junior in net, was first team all-state tournament last year.

“There’s been a culture change during the upperclassmen’s careers, from getting blown out of every game during a season to state qualifiers,” said head coach Jimmy Marshall. “There’s a chip on the girls’ shoulders to prove everyone they can compete with the best programs in the state.”

Two of Northern Kentucky’s three boys’ high school lacrosse teams are growing under first-year head coaches who are familiar with and heavily invested in their programs.

Logan Jeffries, a former Northern Kentucky Warriors player, is in his first season as head coach of the club program. Conner McKee took over as head coach at Covington Catholic this season. Jeffries and McKee were teammates on the inaugural Warriors team in 2006 and McKee joined his high school team once CovCath started a program. McKee spent the past two seasons assisting Dan Hooper, now the area’s longest-tenured boys’ lacrosse coach, at Dixie Heights.

The young coaches have watched their current players develop over the years, as the sport has grown in the area.

“I coached a few of these young men when they were in middle school and seeing them grow has been a real honor,” said McKee. “We have improved every game so far this season and it shows me how strong my team really is.”

CovCath is led by captains Lee Ludovicy, Cason Wall, Will Breen, Kyle Brake, and Ryan O’Connell. Andrew Mullen has emerged as a pleasant surprise. The program’s development has changed the way these coaches go about their duties.

“For the first time ever, I have a lot of freshmen who have played before. Not just one or two but, a few that have played already for several years,” said McKee. “Being able to quickly go over the ba-

sics and not have to worry about catching and throwing is quite an amazing trait to have.”

The Warriors attract players from several area schools.

Jeffries has seen up close how far the program has come since its first season a decade ago when he was a player.

“It is fantastic to see that the program has continued to grow and improve by consistently bringing in young athletes and developing them into varsity-level players,” he said. “This is a testament to the commitment and excellence of the coaches, players, and parents to make that development possible. Many of our current varsity players have been with the program for multiple years. It is great to see our program extending its roots throughout Northern Kentucky attracting increasing numbers of young lacrosse players.”

This year’s Warriors squad is led Riley Burns, Stephen Dauer, T.J. DiSantis, and Brandon Lichtenberg.

“They set the tone for our intensity and work ethic every day and challenge their teammates to rise to the occasion so that we can meet our expectations for the season as a whole,” said Jeffries. He added that his squad is “a unit of respectable young men who possess outstanding character, work ethic, and passion.”

Dixie Heights made history last season by advancing to its first regional tournament.

The Colonels are aiming for their third straight winning season. They have had to replace eight seniors, but are led by returning starters Kagen Butler, Blake Alexander, Austin Kappes and Austin Miller.

Basketball » The Kentucky Lions AllStar Classic, which annually matches the top Kentucky high basketball players school against the best in Indiana, is set for Sunday, June 12. The girls’

game will begin at 1 p.m. with the boys facing off 30 minutes after the conclusion. Both games will be played at Bellarmine University in Louisville.

The grass is the deep forest green that only reveals itself in early spring. Keenelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spring meet is underway and the Kentucky Derby is not far away.

It is April in Kentucky and the fish are biting all over the state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I caught a limit of striped bass last Saturday and another on Sunday and did the same the weekend before on Lake Cumberland,â&#x20AC;? said Joe McWilliams, an avid striped bass angler who has owned a house on the lake for nearly 20 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of them ran 24 to 26 inches, but my biggest was 30 1/2 inches.â&#x20AC;?

Stripers ranging in length from 24 to 26 inches weigh roughly 8 to 11 pounds while 30 inchers run about 14 pounds.

McWilliams bottom fishes live alewives or shad he catches in a cast net in the pre-dawn hours to catch striped bass. He has a milk run of sloping banks, channel banks and points and changes locations and depths until he finds fish.

Store-bought large shiners work for bait as well.

He employs a simple slip rig with a 1/2- to 3/4-ounce egg sinker on the main line above a barrel swivel. He ties a leader of 20-pound monofilament line to the barrel swivel with a 4/0 octopus-style hook on the business end. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve caught smallmouth bass up to 4 pounds recently on this rig as well,â&#x20AC;? Crappie are biting on Taylorsville Lake and other lakes across Kentucky. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are catching many limits of crappie,â&#x20AC;? said David Baker, Central Fisheries District biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many 10- to 11-inch crappie, both whites and blacks.â&#x20AC;?

Anglers reported catching black crappie over the last week by casting to rocky banks

with 2-inch lime green or chartreuse curly-tailed grubs. The black crappie are hanging in 4 to 8 feet of water in the midlake region. Minnows fished in woody cover draw strikes from white crappie on Taylorsville. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The lake has settled down and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really helped the crappie,â&#x20AC;? Baker said. The less turbid sections of the lake provide better crappie fishing.

Crappie are also shallow and active on central Kentuck-

yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Herrington Lake. The canyon-like lake is known more for its largemouth and white bass fisheries, but the lake holds an excellent population of black and white crappie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We saw many 9- to 14-inch crappie in Herrington this past week,â&#x20AC;? Baker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Look for shoreline cover or stumps just under the water. The fish are relatively shallow for Herrington in 5 to 8 feet of water.â&#x20AC;?

He said the fish are fat with excellent body condition. Cast pearl-colored 2-inch curly tailed grubs to the stumps and fish the shoreline cover with live minnows. Black crappie predominate the lower lake while anglers will find more white crappie in the upper lake above Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mill Marina.

Anglers report catching black crappie on the famous crappie twins of west Kentucky, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, by casting chartreuse and lime-green curlytailed grubs rigged on 1/8ounce leadheads to pea gravel banks. White crappie are still staging in the deeper sections of creek arms in 8 to 14 feet of water, but should move shallow anytime with water temperatures now cresting 60 degrees.

There is an old saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the white bass run when the redbuds bloom.â&#x20AC;? Baker saw many anglers catching white bass on Herrington Lake by trolling medium-running shad-colored crankbaits between Kings Mill Marina and Dunn Island. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One guy even complained to us he was sick of catching them,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My father-in-law caught 36 this past Sunday on Herrington. They are impressive with many of them 12 to 14 inches. They look great.â&#x20AC;?

The run has likely not commenced into the lakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head-

waters, Baker said.

The white bass run at Taylorsville Lake has been spotty so far. The smaller male white bass made a run in the last two weeks that seems to have petered out.

Nolin River Lake in westcentral Kentucky holds arguably the best white bass population in Kentucky. The white bass are staging in the upper lake from Cane Run to Bacon Creek Ramp and the smaller males are up in the Nolin River.

Eventually they will run upstream as far as Wheelerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mill.

The spawning runs of white bass into the headwaters of Herrington, Taylorsville and Nolin River lakes should start in earnest once a prolonged warm front raises water temperatures a few degrees.

White bass strike anything that flashes during their runs.

White in-line spinners, white or chartreuse curly tailed grubs, silver casting spoons or small chrome topwater lures all draw strikes. Small 1/32-ounce feather jigs in pink, white or chartreuse suspended under a bobber and allowed to drift in the current is also a deadly presentation for running white bass.

The redbuds are blooming, the grass is green and fish biting everywhere. Get out and enjoy, winter is gone for good.

Omega-3 rich eggs: Are there eggstra benefits?

Eggs are a cheap source of high-quality protein. Past recommendations suggested eating fewer eggs because of the cholesterol present in the yolk. More recent research shows that including one egg a day in the diet does not increase a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s risk for heart disease.

This is considered only moderate consumption. Some recent research suggests that the protein, vitamins B12 and D, folate and riboflavin present in eggs may hold extra dietary benefits.

There has been a move to enrich hensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; eggs with omega-3 fatty acids by Kathy R. feeding Byrnes the hens flax seed.

EXTENDING KNOWLEDGE This normally goes to the short chain linolenic acid and the hen converts it to the more desirable long chain fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid [EPA]). Higher amount of DHA and EPA are found in eggs where

the hen is fed fish meals or fish oils.

One study at North Carolina State University comparing the nutrient content of free-range vs. cage-produced shell eggs showed that the levels of omega-3 fatty acids were 0.17 percent higher in free-range eggs than cage eggs (0.14 percent). However, one should remember that the amount of omega-3 fatty acid in eggs is normally low, so this could be anywhere from 0.165g more omega-3 fatty acid in a large egg to 0.1819g more in a large egg.

Omega-3 fortified egg can range from 0.16 to 0.27g of DHA. Therefore, if someone is looking to increase his intake of omega-3 fatty acids, it would make more sense to increase intake of fish (2 ½ ounce salmon, Atlantic, farmed, raw, cooked 1.48 to 1.619 DHA/EPA), walnuts, flaxseed (2.46 ALA), flaxseed oil (2.58g ALA) and leafy vegetables.

Kentucky flu level widespread for 9th week Kentucky Department for Public Health officials are reporting â&#x20AC;&#x153;widespreadâ&#x20AC;? flu activity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the ninth consecutive week.

Widespread activity is the highest level of flu activity, which indicates increased flu-like activity or flu outbreaks in at least half of the regions in the state. The activity levels for states are tracked weekly as part of the CDCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national flu surveillance system.

The traditional flu season lasts from October through May. Increased flu activity began later this season than usual in Kentucky. Due to the late peak in the season, both in Kentucky and nationally, increased flu activity is anticipated to continue well into May. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even though flu season is running later than usual, Kentuckians can still protect themselves and their families by getting a flu shot,â&#x20AC;? said Dr. Kraig Humbaugh, senior deputy commissioner of DPH. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Kentucky Defor Public partment Health is urging anyone who hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t received a flu vaccine, particularly children 6 months and older and those people at high risk for complications related to the flu, to check with doctorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; offices, local health departments, pharmacies or other providers about getting the vaccine.â&#x20AC;?

The vaccination rate in Kentucky each flu season is about 50 percent. Therefore, there are many susceptible Kentuckians in the population. Flu can cycle within a community several times. Young children and those who are elderly or have chronic disease are especially vulnerable to more severe consequences.

(Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine). Âť Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Âť Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased rub. Âť Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Event to show Scouting impact The Boy Scouts of America will host a dinner event on April 21 at The Madison Event Center to raise awareness about the impact Scouting has on the community and to recognize Covington businessman Guy van Rooyen.

The event, known as The Golden Eagle Dinner, is an initiative designed to educate the public about The Boy Scouts of America and to expand current Scouting programs in the Northern Kentucky region.

“We believe that the Scouting program can be a crucial tool in fighting the growing drug epidemic that faces this community,” said Shawn Marler, district director of The Boy Scouts of America Dan Beard Council. “This event will allow local business owners to experience the impact of Scouting through firsthand accounts.”

The dinner is in collaboration with The Salyers Group, an investment company that holds real estate, retail

and entertainment assets in Covington including the Hotel Covington, Mutual Insurance Building and Doctors’ Building redevelopment projects underway in the city.

New Edgewood program to slow dementia progression With the number of Kentuckians with Alzheimer’s disease expected to increase more than 26 percent in the coming decade, a local senior living community is investing back into its community to meet seniors’ soaring needs.

Brookdale Edgewood, managed by Brookdale Senior Living, will launch a special program called Clare Bridge Crossings designed to slow dementia’s progression for those in its early stages.

This $2 million project

is part of a capital and investment and community management joint venture between Brookdale and Health Care Properties (HCP), further solidifying the long term relationship between the two companies.

Brookdale, the nation’s largest dementia care and senior living provider, developed Clare Bridge Crossings based on the newest findings about the disease.

“Studies are showing it’s possible for people in the early phase to main-

tain abilities and even slow the disease’s advancement by participating in activities that build up brain synapses and resilience,” said Juliet Holt Klinger, Brookdale’s senior director of dementia care program development. “This is the focus of Clare Bridge Crossings’ programming, which also provides residents the wonderful benefit of daily joy and purpose.”

She was a retired secretary for the Walter P. Dolle Co. and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park.

Her husband, Melbourne Moreland Bratton, died previously.

Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Ruth Frevola of Edgewood; stepdaughters, Melanie Alcorn of Irvine, Kentucky and Nancy Robinson of New Albany, Indiana; stepson, Wesley Bratton of Fort Thomas; and three grandchildren.

Anita Carmack Anita J. Carmack, 67, of Erlanger, died March 30.

She was a graduate of Grove City High School in Grove City, Ohio. She was a campaign manager and volunteer coordinator for numerous locally elected officials and was active in the Kenton County Republican Women’s Club which in 2014 honored her as Woman of the Year. She was an active community volunteer and was involved with a number of

not-for-profit organizations including the local chapter of the American Cancer Association, St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Covington Latin School. She was a church musician for more than 50 years as an organist at countless parishe including 30 years as director of music at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lakeside Park.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald G. Carmack; children, Aaron Carmack of Columbus, Ohio, Stephanie Riedmiller of Villa Hills, and Cynthia Davis of Mount Vernon, Ohio; siblings, Janet Lester of Sebastian, Florida, Marilyn Rice of Hilliard, Ohio, and Alan Miller of Fort Mill, South Carolina; and grandchildren.

He retired from Heidelberg Distributing and was a member of Teamsters Local 100. He was an avid drag racer and enjoyed working on cars.

She was an avid reader, but her passion was music. She sang in the choir and played piano at Faith Community United Methodist Church where she was a member.

Survivors include her husband, Nick “Larry” Ellis; daughter, Bonnie Lynn Knopp of Taylor Mill; son, Michael Ellis of Belleview, Florida; brother, Charles Herndon of Largo, Florida; and five grandchildren along with four great-grandchildren.

He was the owner and president of Cincinnati Baker’s Supply for almost 50 years and was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Xavier Church in Cincinnati and Par Hoppers of Cincinnati. He loved golf, traveling the world and his cars.

His wife, Virginia Ann Kramer, died previously.

She was a homemaker and former custodian for Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member for 55 years.

She served there as the bereavement committee coordinator, greeter, decorations committee member and baptism co-coordinator.

Survivors include her husband, LeRoy â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bonesâ&#x20AC;? McKinley; children, Troy McKinley, Joy McKinley Elliott, and Jeff McKinley; siblings, Dorothy Williams, Rose Moore, James Murphy and Mike Murphy; and seven grandchildren along with a great-grandson.

Frances Mullikin Frances Katherine â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kathyâ&#x20AC;?

Mullikin, 71, of Independence, died March 26 at St. Elizabeth Edgewood.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Rath; brothers, James Cammick of Erlanger and Robert Cammick of Fort Mitchell; and sister, Margaret Marie Campbell of Tennessee.

Karen Murphy Karen Lee Murphy, 71, of Fort Wright, died March 28 at St. Elizabeth Edgewood.

She worked in various supervisory roles during her more than 30-year career at Cincinnati Bell. She enjoyed ceramics, reading, puzzles and crosswords, game shows, playing cards, family gatherings and celebrating holidays especially Christmas. She was a member of St. Agnes Church.

Her husband, Michael T. Murphy; brothers, Jerry Coldiron and Charles Coldiron Jr.; and sisters, Sandy Shafer, Charlotte Coldiron, Helen Claus, Marcia Gerth, and Beverly Baugh, died previously.

Survivors include her daughters, Kelly Kramer and Stacey Murphy, both of Fort Wright; sons, Michael W. Murphy of Fort Mitchell and Bryan Murphy of Highland Heights; brother, Ronald Coldiron of Park Hills; sister, Pamela Curtis of Latonia; and seven grandchildren.

Artie Reed Artie F. Reed, 89, of Crescent Springs, died April 1 at her home.

She was a retired assembler for Mosler Lock Company, member of Ludlow Christian Church, and past worthy matron of the Vashti Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was a caretaker for many people, especially the Ludlow Senior Citizens. She was very active, participating in yoga and roller skating until she was 81 years old.

Her husband, Jim Reed; and sons, Joey and Marion Reed, died previously.

Survivors include her sons, Wayne Reed of Vevay, Indiana, and Jim Reed of Atlanta; daughters, Wanda Suscher of Crescent Springs, Linda Roche of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Debbie Rich of Covington; brother, Frank Bell of St. Petersburg, Florida; sister, Carol Houp of St. Petersburg, Florida; and 24 grandchildren along with 39 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was cremated.

William Ruehl William Leo Ruehl, 90, of Villa Hills, died March 28 at St. Elizabeth Florence.

He graduated from St. Henry Elementary and St. Henry High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving a honorable discharge in 1946. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years and the Holy Name Society. He built his permanent residence in Erlanger in 1951.

His sisters, LaVerne Ralenkotter and Joyce Berning, died previously.

Survivors include his sons, Bill Ruehl and Tony Ruehl; daughters, Ginny Focke and Susan Yager; and 10 grandchildren along with 14 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Charles Saalfeld Charles â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chuckâ&#x20AC;? B. Saalfeld, 67, of Crestview Hills, died March 20 at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War where he specialized in electronic surveillance. He was a longtime volunteer at Kentucky High School Athletic Association swim meets and he loved photography, all things military related, jelly beans and â&#x20AC;&#x153;NCIS.â&#x20AC;?

He held a number of positions during his 26-year career with his familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paper company, but photography was his passion.

For part of the 1970s, he was the Cincinnati Bengals chief photographer and he also shot everything from weddings to breaking news. In recent years, he volunteered his photographic talents at a number of venues, including the Beh-
