Dave Allen said the group of students involved in “Footloose! The Musical” is one of the most enjoyable groups of students with whom he’s worked. He also said they are a very talented group of young people. And Allen has seen more than his fair share of talented performers throughout his 42 years of directing the Seton-Elder Performance Series. “It’s going to be a magnificent performance,” he said, referring to the upcoming production of “Footloose! The Musical.” Seton and Elder students have their dancing shoes dusted are ready to present their version of the 1998 musical, with shows at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30; 8 p.m. Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2; and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in the Seton Performance Hall. “The show is about a high school student from the big city who moves to a small town where there are laws forbidding rock n’ roll music and dancing,” said Elder senior David Mecher, who plays the lead role of Ren McCormack. Mecher said the musical is based on the 1984 movie “Footloose,” which starred Kevin Bacon as the rebellious teen who just wanted to dance. Seton senior Liza Hartke plays the female lead, Ariel Moore – the daughter of the Biblethumping Rev. Shaw Moore who makes sure the town is dance free. “Basically, I just rebel against my father,” Hartke said. “It’s fun being someone you’re not.” Mecher said the cast and crew, comprised of roughly 75 students from Elder and Seton, have been rehearsing the show for three months.

plays Ren’s nemesis Chuck Cranston, said he always has fun participating in the shows the series presents. “I like all the camaraderie with the cast and crew,” he said. “And I love the adrenaline rush that consumes you before the curtain opens.” Rider said he’s looking forward to the cast putting on a perfect performance. “I can’t wait,” he said. Elder junior Justin Kohler, who plays the overbearing minister, said audiences should enjoy themselves.

Patrick Kelly is bringing the eclectic sounds of his band to one of downtown Cincinnati’s more popular musical venues. Kelly’s band, The PsychoAcoustic Orchestra, will perform Friday, April 1, at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Kelly, a Newtown resident, has been composing music and performing for more than 30 years. He said while he still plays in local rock bands, his various interests and musical talents lend themselves more to The PsychoAcoustic Orchestra, which is a 13-piece ensemble of acclaimed Cincinnati jazz musicians who perform rock, jazz, funk and Latin music. “It’s a very high level of musicianship in the band,” Kelly said. “I’m continually honored that I get to play with them.” Kelly formed The PsychoAcoustic Orchestra in 1991 and they recorded albums in 1994 and 1996.

Newtown resident and composer Patrick Kelly will be performing with his band, The Psychoacoustic Orchestra, at Blue Wisp Jazz Club April 1 in downtown Cincinnati. The group is made up of local musicians who have played with the Blue Wisp Big Band, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops and the Aronoff Center pit orchestra. Kelly said while he’s performed at Blue Wisp in the past, this performance should be special. He said the club typically doesn’t allow “big bands” to perform Friday nights, but the mixture of his group’s varied styles and April Fools holiday should make for a unique experience.
